    Traffic Signs

    The general principle of traffic signs is to make amessage known quickly, (70mph) accurately,with minimum reading skills required.

    This should allow traffic to meet the goal of theHTS. Safe, rapid, and efficient transportation.

    There are three types

    (classifications) of traffic signs

    They are regulatory

    #arning

    and guide.

    $egulatory signs

    %. Stop signs. Stop signs are red octagons and mean come to a complete stop.They are the only sign so shaped. &asily recogni"ed at a distance.

    '. ield signs. ield signs are red and triangular. This sign requires a drier toallow other driers first use of the road.

    *. Speed limit signs. Speed limit signs are white with !lack lettering. They are

    also ertical rectangles. They can also !e orange. + construction speed limitis a regulatory sign as well. There can !e minimum speed limits too. These arenormally found on interstate highways.+lthough there could !e minimum speed limits elsewhere, they must first !eposted !y the highway department.

    #arning signs

    #arning signs are information to warn driers of ha"ardsthey are a!out to encounter.

    They are usually yellow and diamond shaped. There aremessages to help driers understand these ha"ards.

    +lthough these are not regulatory signs, not heeding thewarning may result in an accident and1or a citation fordriing too fast for e2isting conditions.

    There are seeral other shapes used for warning signs.School "one warning signs are a pentagon. $ailroad

    warning signs are round. 3o passing signs are a pennant shaped sign and areplaced at the !eginning of the no passing "one and onthe left side of the road to make them isi!le to drierstrying to pass.
