Healing School, A Science Academy July 2016 Principal, Mr Knapton What a successful year we have had! Dear Parent/Guardian It really is amazing to look at how many successful activities our pupils have been involved in this last half term. The school year has gone so quickly, it is hard to believe we are at the end of the Summer Term. The priority at this time of year is always supporting the Year 11 pupils to finish their external examinations. However, as you will see from this edition of Hotline, our staff and pupils have been involved in lots of events including: Award Ceremonies, the Summer Recital, Sports Day, Year 7 Grandparents’ Afternoon, Year 6 Taster Days, the Year 11 Prom, Year 10 Work Experience, Open Evening, New Intake Parents’ Evening and trips to the Peak District and Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Overall it has been a fantastic half term which has capped off a fabulous year. However, I am very aware that this can only be achieved with your support. Thank you and I hope you have a wonderful, safe summer break.

Healing School, A Science Academy

July 2016

Principal, Mr Knapton

What a successful year we have had! Dear Parent/Guardian It really is amazing to look

at how many successful activities our pupils have been involved in this last

half term. The school year has gone so quickly, it is

hard to believe we are at the end of the Summer Term. The priority at this time of year is always supporting the Year 11 pupils to finish their external examinations.

However, as you will see from this edition of Hotline, our staff and pupils have been involved in lots of

events including: Award Ceremonies, the Summer Recital, Sports

Day, Year 7 Grandparents’ Afternoon, Year 6 Taster Days, the Year 11 Prom, Year 10 Work Experience, Open Evening, New Intake Parents’ Evening and trips to the Peak District and Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

Overall it has been a fantastic half term which has capped off a fabulous year. However, I am very aware

that this can only be achieved with your support.

Thank you and I hope you have a wonderful, safe

summer break.

Healing School Hosts Open Evening On 28th June, Healing School opened its doors to Year 5 pupils from local primary schools and their parents. This year, over 200 families attended the event, with different activities taking place in each faculty. Despite torrential rain throughout, the evening was a resounding success and our pupil guides did an excellent job. It was good to meet Year 5 pupils and their parents from such a range of primary schools and to be able to answer any questions they had. Staff and pupils alike have worked hard to provide an excellent taster of “Life at Healing school.” We are now looking forward to welcoming the new pupils in September. Mrs Smith

Feedback from our evaluations:

Primary Maths and Science Quiz On Wednesday 6Th July, Healing School held another successful Primary Maths and Science Quiz. We were joined by six eager primary school teams, from Keelby, Laceby Stanford, Healing, Coomb Briggs, Stallingborough and Wybers Wood, all battling to win the trophy. The pupils had an afternoon of code-cracking, guessing the picture, anagrams and Morse code, whilst trying to solve mysteries along the way. Throughout the afternoon it was a close call, with Healing taking the lead after round 2, being closely chased by Wybers Wood. Healing continued to lead and managed to hold their position right to the end, reclaiming the trophy. The afternoon was organised by Mrs Portess and Mr Harrison; the event was well supported by 13 of our year 7 pupils, Mrs Crosby, Mrs Yeo, Mr Stone and Mr Cooper. The pupils were excellent ambassadors for the school, ensuring the smooth running of the afternoon, and making the visitors feel welcome. Mrs Portess

Grandparents’ Day 2016 Grandparents were treated to a cream tea during ’Grandparents’ Day’ at Healing school. The special guests were invited into the academy in recognition of the role they play in their grandchildren’s education. A fairy tale performance by Year 9 and a selection of musical performances by pupils form all year groups was included in the afternoons entertainment. The grandparents attended lessons with their grandchildren and were impressed with the topics the children were learning. They enjoyed their insight into the typical school day.

Mr Knapton said: “We know what an important role grandparents play in young people’s lives. If parents are working, it is often the grandparents we see at the school gates, dropping off or picking up. The afternoon gives the children a chance to show them that their efforts are worthwhile and thank them for their help.”

Yr9 Pupils Perform ‘Fairy Tales With A Twist’ On Monday 11th July, pupils from Healing Primary experienced a mixture of fairy tales performed by the talented Year 9 Performing Arts theatre group ‘Curtain Call’. They were treated to many famous stories including ‘Cinderella’, ‘The Three Little Pigs’, ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and ‘Red Riding Hood’ all interwoven by the crazy chorus who shared the moral of each piece. The actors were wearing Strangeface half-masks which cover the top of the face, but still allow the actors to use their voice. These masks require a lot of skill as well as strong focus and dedication to the physicality of the character along with exaggerated vocal work. There was lots of audience interaction and the mixture of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils from Healing Primary were both scared into silence at times as well as rolling with laughter at the hilarity that took place on the stage. This was the largest audience the Year 9 ‘Curtain Call’ company have performed in front of and they worked extremely hard presenting a professional performance. Their next production will be a major performance in the New Hall at Christmas… watch this space for further details!

Yr6 Pupils Create Eco Villages During the recent Yr6 induction days, pupils visited the Geography department for a sample lesson. We looked at what it means to be sustainable in terms of house building, viewing an example of BedZED in London. The students were then given a challenge to work in their new tutor groups to design their own village. The Geography staff also created a town for students to beat! Everyone worked very hard on their model homes and had some fantastic ideas. Although the staff still think theirs was the best they eventually agreed that 3R3 were the winners! (see below) Well done to all who took part. Prizes will be given in September! Miss Henshall

Peak District Trip for Year 8 On Thursday 14th July the Year 8’s set off for an adventure in the Peak District.

Half the students headed off to Burbage Brook where they scrambled over rocks and though bracken which was taller than most students (and some staff!) to reach a clearing. Once they’d had a quick lunch the team from the National Park informed the students about the river and explained how to investigate the various elements. Students were then given the task to calculate the width and depth of their section and calculate the flow rate with dog biscuits. Although some students got a lot wetter and muddier then others it was a lovely day out.

The other half headed about 10 minutes further into the National Park where they explored the different conflicts which arise in such an environment. After a bit of a hike they reach the top of a ridge where students enjoyed stunning views across the Moorland. The students returned to school extremely tired from their adventure but with a defiant sense of achievement from the climb.

A special mention needs to go to photographer Josh Young for doing a fantastic job.

Globetrotters Help Year 6 Pupils On Monday 18th July a group of students from the Globetrotters club headed over to Healing Primary School to help them with their Geography investigation into Healing Woods.

The Year 6 pupils worked in smaller groups supported by a Globetrotter to investigate the flora and fauna of the woods as well as looking at climatic factors and how these woods are used. They had several tasks to complete from leaf identification to plant sampling and bug hunting. They also collected materials to construct nature maps and learnt how to produce field sketches.

After a busy morning of data collection the students came back into the classroom where each group analysed their data with support from the globetrotters and wrote their conclusion.

Zoolab visit Healing School On Thursday 23rd June, Healing school science pupils were treated to some ‘animal magic’ when animal handling company Zoolab visited the school. Zoolab specialise in delivering animal handling workshops around the country, so young people have the opportunity to meet the creatures first hand and learn about their biology, habitats, what they eat and how they adapt to their environments. Pupils had the chance to meet and handle a selection of unusual creatures including Max the giant millipede, Rochelle the giant cockroach, Bobby the tree frog, Milo the Peruvian hedgehog, Eddie the tortoise, Prince the royal python and Tallulah the tarantula. Pupil, Chloe Bentley loves all animals and was eager to make friends with all the unusual visitors. She particularly liked the snake and said that it wasn’t at all slimy and that his body felt squishy, a bit like a plastic tube.

Boff Nitiphong, of Year 7, was eventually persuaded to hold the giant millipede and described the legs as feeling slightly sticky and pinchy. Boff was very relieved that the millipede didn’t try and go up his sleeve! Kian Collins thought the tree frog was very interesting and decided he would quite like an amphibian as a pet. Lots of staff dropped into the science lab to meet the creatures, but special mention goes to Miss Sass who conquered her lifetime fear of spiders and was eventually persuaded to hold the tarantula. Well done miss!

Goodbye to Year 11 On Monday the 20th June, the current Year 11 pupils entered the doors of Healing school for the final time. With their GCSE’s behind them, the pupils let off steam in traditional manner, by signing each others shirts and swapping contact details. Mr Knapton and Mrs Ranyard hosted a leavers’ assembly and gave a power point presentation of the pupils’ time over their 5 years at Healing school. Pupils were then presented with their year books. Healing school would like to thank Brianplant CEO – Mr Clive Thornley, who has sponsored the yearbook for the 5th year running and Miss Plant, for all her hard work. It is hoped that Year 11 pupils leaving the school will cherish the year book and reflect upon their time at Healing with fond memories.

Yr7 Trip To The Yorkshire Wildlife Park On the hottest day of 2016, Year 7 pupils went on a trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster. The pupils are currently studying organisms and classification of life in their biology lessons. The park allowed the pupils to experience the diversity of animals they wouldn’t otherwise encounter and to learn about their environments and habitats. Pupils also received an insight into the conservation work that goes on behind scenes of the wildlife park. The pupils enjoyed studying all of the creatures, but where particularly excited to be able to pet the wallabies who were basking in the shade. The ring-tailed lemurs had recently had babies and everyone was delighted to catch a glimpse of the pups with their parents. We were also lucky enough to see the 2 polar bears, enjoying a swim in the cool of the lake and playing with toys. It was a hot, but fascinating day and the pupils behaved impeccably. Mrs Winchester

Yr 6 Induction Day Cookery Presentation On Friday 8th July, Year 6 pupils who will become pupils of Healing Academy in the new academic year, spent a day in school mingling and meeting staff and pupils. The pupils had the opportunity to get a taste of what life will be like at secondary school; to find their way around and make new friends, so their transition to the secondary school runs smoothly. Pupils were seated in the hall, to take part in a cookery presentation, organised by school caterers Chartwells. Chartwells delivered an entertaining ‘Fun With Food’ competition, that pitted 2 teams against each other. ‘Green Pepper’ team led by Mr Phillips cooked a Quorn noodle dish, while Mr Homes’ ‘Red Tomato’ team made a chicken curry. Once the food was cooked, tasters Mrs Bell and Mr Blockley, came on stage to give the dishes a try. It was a close contest, but it was eventually decided that the green peppers were the winners, although it was agreed that both dishes were delicious!

BBC Singers Visit School On the 20th June, Healing School hosted an afternoon of rehearsals with the BBC Singers and other local schools in preparation for the BBC Proms, which will be on the 24th July. Students will be performing Verdi’s Requiem in the Royal Albert Hall along with many other schools from across the country, this will be an amazing experience for students, as it is a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform in the prestigious venue. The students had an excellent experience from watching such professionals perform as well as working alongside them. Please watch out for this on the BBC I-Player from 16:00 – 16:15 and also listen on BBC Radio 3, as this will be aired live. Miss Roberts

Number Ninjas End of Year Maths Challenge Lots of quiz teams took part in our End of Year Maths challenge held on Friday 8th July.

It was a very busy day as we had Year 6 pupils visiting the school, but the pupils taking part still turned out in force to answer a series of questions involving maths and logic. Some Year 6 pupils even joined in to help the teams – well done and we hope that some of you will become members of Maths Club when you start in Year 7!

The overall winners were as follows: 1st Place:

Year 6 Transition Day On Tuesday 14th July, a small group of children came in for an exciting extra transition day in preparation for starting at Healing Academy in September. We started our day with Mr Vincent taking part in various drama games and activities. The children got stuck in and did a fantastic job. Afterwards, we spent some time familiarising ourselves in Learning Support, playing maths games and getting to know each other. Miss Roberts introduced the children to the impressive music equipment they will be using in their music lessons come September and the children had fun creating their own tunes. Over lunch time we ate our pack ups and indulged in exciting P.E. games led by Miss Warner. Our afternoon was spent learning about Moai heads with our Geography teacher, Miss Henshall which linked into the final activity of the day - mask making with glitter, feathers, sequins and much more! It was a brilliant day and was thoroughly enjoyed by children and staff alike. I’d like to give special thanks to all members of staff involved in the day and look forward to doing it all again next year! Miss Mellis

Healing Pupils Support Armed Forces Day On 25th June, the National Armed Forces day was held in Cleethorpes. It was the first time the national event had been held in the region, attracting over 180,000 visitors who descended on the town to show their appreciation to the Armed Forces and pay tribute to those who have served. Pupils in local cadet groups who attend Healing School, showed their support to the service men and women by taking part in the parades and raising money for the air cadets. Year 9 pupil, Alec Brown said ‘I had an absolutely fantastic weekend! I was very proud to represent the cadets. I want to join the RAF when I leave school.’

Healing Primary Music Workshop On Wednesday 29th June, pupils from Healing Primary visited Healing School to experience what school life will be like in the Music Department. Pupils were given the opportunity to use the iMacs in the classroom, which provides students with a rich experience of composing music. The pupils had little previous experience as to how to play the piano, however, at the end of their taster session, all students were able to compose a riff in time with their drum loop, with opportunities at the end to win an award for the best riff. The pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed their experience and look forward to attending Healing School in September. Miss Roberts

Year 9 Pupils Donates Hair To The Little Princes Trust Charity Year 9 pupil Eleanor Clausen, recently had over 30cm of her hair cut off in aid of the Little Princess Trust. The charity provides wigs made with real hair for young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment. Eleanor bravely had her hair chopped off in front of her year group during a special assembly. Eleanor has suffered with alopecia herself, so she was determined to help others who have also experienced hair loss through illness. As well as donating her hair to be made into a wig for someone less fortunate, she hopes to have eventually raised at least £450 to support the charity that is close to her heart. Eleanor was inspired by Science teacher Mrs Plant, who also donated her hair to the charity last year. Mrs Smith

Healing School Summer Recital 2016 Each year, Healing School’s Music Department hosts an annual Summer Recital to showcase our student’s talents to the school, family and friends and the public. As usual, the students did not disappoint. Students from both KS3 and KS4 produced an amazing performance, which was enjoyed by all with Music ranging from Beethoven to AC/DC! In the first half of the show, visitors were treated to a rendition of ‘Ain’t misbehaving’ by Year 10 saxophonist, Callum Barton. Lily Richardson performed an up-tempo rendition on ‘Riptide’ by contemporary song writer Vance Joy and was accompanied by Ryan Kirby on guitar. The choir also performed Abba favourite, Mama Mia, which had the audience humming along. The second half of the show saw band ‘More Bricks In the Wall’ perform the Guns and Roses classic, ‘sweet child of mine,’ which contrasted with a moving version of ‘You’ll never walk alone,’ sung by Yr9 vocalist, Lucy Frith. Each year, the Summer Recital seems to get more entertaining, so we hope to see you next time! Miss Roberts

Primary Sport Festival On June 8th, Year 1 and 2 pupils from local primary schools, came to Healing for a fun afternoon taking part in different sporting events. Although the event was organised by the Healing P.E team, Year 7 pupils assisted in the running of each activity. They helped the younger children with their hand and eye co-ordination and offered encouragement. The primary pupils really enjoyed their day and their teachers commented on how enthusiastic and kind the year 7 pupils assisting were. Despite the weather being against us, the school also held a rounders tournament and invited 160 Year 5 and 6 primary pupils in to play. Healing hosted the event for the first time last year and the children really enjoyed it. It is hoped Healing will host the tournament again next year. Mr Norman

Healing Cheerleaders Win National Competition Talented and enthusiastic pupils reached an all-time high by becoming national cheerleading champions. The Healing School squad won the UK Cheerleading Association’s National Championship in the Key Stage 4 large squad Level 1 category. They also achieved fourth in the same age group in Level 2 at the Manchester event. The school took two teams from Years 7 to 11 and they competed with pupils across the country for the title. PE teacher and Cheerleading Coach Mrs Yeadon and Miss Plant, also a Cheerleading Coach and Science teacher were impressed with all the girls. Mrs Yeadon said: “All the girls have been working very hard towards this achievement and they performed their routines to perfection. Cheerleading has become so popular we now have more than 60 girls participating every week throughout the academic year." Mrs Plant said: “We were so proud of our cheerleaders and they were a credit to the school from start to finish.” Mr Knapton said: “The school is absolutely delighted by the success of the Healing High Flyers Cheerleading Squad. To win this prestigious accolade is a real testament to the hard work of the girls and the dedication of the staff.” “The school is delighted to be able to offer cheerleading as an extra- curricular activity and it is something that has always proved really popular over the years. I am sure the girls will enjoy performing their winning routine at the Schools Sports Day“.

Year 9 Dance Project Nineteen girls in Year9, recently took part in a creative dance performance at Grimsby Auditorium. The girls were part of a workshop run by the Balbir Singh dance company. Their 6 minute routine was created by a professional choreographer and the girls perfected their routine over a 3 week period. The girls were excited to showcase their hard work to their family and friends at the Auditorium, alongside other schools in the region. Most of the girls hadn’t performed in front of an audience before and it was clear that the experience had increased their confidence and dance abilities. For their commitment, the girls were rewarded with a Prize. They were taken on a trip to watch the National Youth Dance Company perform at the Stanley and Audrey Burton Theatre in Leeds. The girls thoroughly enjoyed watching

the performance of talented young dancers from across the country and also visited the Xcape and Gravity Trampoline Park. Mrs Yeadon

Double Success For Tennis Teams You will all be pleased to know that our KS3 tennis players won the recent St. James Tennis Tournament. Not only did they win the final, but it was a Healing 'A' vs Healing 'B' final! Both teams topped their groups in the group stages (something England football team could not achieve!) They both beat Tollbar in the semi-finals and the 'A' team thoroughly deserved their narrow victory! All the boys worked extremely hard and were a credit to the school considering the weather was nothing like it is at the French Open! Mr Phillips
