Eagle Lighting Australia design and manufacture a large range of luminaires with maximum efficiency, through our state of the art facility based in Melbourne. We pride ourselves on providing innovative and affordable lighting solutions to clients throughout Australasia.

Eagle Lighting Australia has been involved in medical lighting for over 40 years and currently employs over 120 staff in Australia & New Zealand. Medical lighting is a part of our DNA; we understand the lighting needs of staff, patients and visitors. Utilising LED technology, we can deliver a lower total cost of ownership for the building, whilst also assist in reducing recovery times for patients by getting them back into their circadian cycle faster post surgery.

Recent studies have shown that dynamic LED lighting in aged care facilities has had a very positive effect on the resident’s well-being. Lighting plays its part by creating affective illuminance for patients by regulating and mimicking daylight through tunable white technology as well as ambient lighting in wards. The idea is to imitate natural light, both in level and colour during the day.

Along with utilising tunable white into our luminaires, we have also developed the Aureled Vista with healthcare environments in mind. The luminaire is available with a variety of images designed to promote a relaxing and reassuring environment for patients. These lighting solutions create a non-institutional feel, putting patients at ease and focuses their attention on healing.

Our Story


Through the relationship between Fagerhult and Eagle Lighting Australia, there is a commitment to ongoing manufacturing investment at our Melbourne facility.

One of the strategies behind the heavy investment in our factory and operations in Melbourne is to marry our machines and capabilities to those of the other members within the global Fagerhult Group. The goal, being able to produce a global range locally.

The investment in Eagle Lighting Australia is also an investment in the Australian economy.

AT OUR FACILITY, WE NOW HAVE A SEAMLESS AND EFFICIENT PRODUCTION LINE FROM MANUFACTURING, TO ASSEMBLY, TO DISTRIBUTION.

The ability to manage the whole process allows for greater quality control, better customisation and faster production times, all of which provide improved customer satisfaction, backed by the assurance of local support.

In 2015, Eagle Lighting Australia officially opened our own state of the art Photometric Laboratory.

The introduction of the Photometric Laboratory on a local level has further strengthened ELA’s abilities within the luminaire design process. Utilising the laboratory, our team of engineers can conduct photometric analysis on all types of luminaires ranging from small to large lighting products.

Our advanced equipment allows us to generate photometric reports, as well as create IES files. Additional components in the laboratory assist the engineering team in creating spectural analysis reports (LM79).

Furthermore, our thermal testing capabilities are in accordance with AS60958 which enable us to accurately generate our lifetime data in accordance with IEC 62717 (LED modules for general lighting performance requirements) and IEC 62722-2-1 (particular requirements for LED luminaires).

The above could not be executed without our knowledgeable and experienced engineering team. Here at ELA we have five dedicated design engineers whom between them share over 60 years of luminaire knowledge with the ELA family. Their superior skills in luminaire design, machine programming and accomplished capabilities for turning theoretical concepts into tangible luminaires, are key components in making ELA our clients lighting company of choice.

Operating Theatres have a number of different lighting requirements depending on the task being completed. This particular range of Eagle Lighting Australia luminaires will provide the solution you have been looking for.

Preparation Lighting

Illuminance must allow hospital staff to conduct the final preparation stages, but at the same time remain calming for the patient.

Recovery Area Lighting

These areas with selective switching can bring individual control to suit the individuals needs, whilst recovering in multi-bed environments. Perfect application for Tunable White.

Scrub Area Lightings

Sufficient illuminance must be provided to ensure all staff are able to follow and complete washing protocols.

Utility Lighting

Downlighting which allows staff to easily navigate through cupboards, drawers and other storage units, as well as ensuring the correct utensil or medication has been taken.

Operating Theatre Light

In theatres, dimmable solutions are required to allow the correct balance between background and task lighting.

From our highly successful Cleanroom and Secureroom range of luminaires, the Operating Theatre Light has been specifically developed to meet the demanding requirements of the theatre environment.

Together with an EPDM gasket, swing-out installation brackets negate the need for a silicon sealant around the fixture in the ceiling.

EPDM rubber foam is a closed cell gasket, ensuring a high IP-rating. At less than 10% compression this returns a 100% water tightness. The low-memory nature of the material ensures it will always return to its original shape.

Overlapping design construction provides this system with a continuous seal around the perimeter of the installation.

UV-stablised, acrylic diffuser options contribute to the overall IP65-rating and are easily cleaned and maintained. When compared with polycarbonate options, our acrylic diffuser is resistant to hospital-grade cleaners.

The below example layouts demonstrate how the Operating Theatre Light system can be installed to create a fully sealed, contaminant-free environment.

Understanding Cyanosis and Light

One significant aspect of clinical observation is the reliable detection of cyanosis, that is, the bluish discolouration in the skin and mucous membranes indicating that oxygen level in the blood is dangerously low.

While pulse oximeters are used in operating rooms and recovery areas, there are areas within hospitals where these are not universally used. There are some medical conditions, for example where patients have poor peripheral circulation, that can make their use unreliable. In these instances, the ability of medical staff to reliably detect the onset of cyanosis by visual observation may be critical to a patient’s wellbeing.

Using the data from the first trials and the known reflective properties of blood, a methodology for calculating a Cyanosis Observation Index (COI) was established and published in AS/NZS 1680.2.5:1997.3

The Australian standard for cyanosis is very demanding. The standard defines Cyanosis Observation Index with an open-ended numerical scale which ranks an artificial light source for the purpose of visual observation, a key fundamental to medical practitioners.

The COI is a dimensionless number and is a function of the spectral power distribution of the lamp. The methodology involves calculating the colour difference between blood when viewed under the test lamp and under the reference lamp (a 4000K Planckian source) for 50% and 100% oxygen saturation and averaging the results. To comply with the AS 1680.2.5 requirements for the reliable diagnosis of cyanosis, the COI should be 3.3 or lower and the lamp correlated colour temperature should be between 3300K and 5500K.

Lamp efficacy has a varying impact on lighting design. Many recommended lighting levels in hospitals are generally in the 160–240 lux range and these are readily achieved by lower efficacy lamps at practical spacings. For larger areas and areas where higher illuminance levels are recommended, higher efficacy can be advantageous.

CLINICAL OBSERVATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN IMPORTANT PART OF MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS.


Using Best Available Technology (BAT)Basing our product design around best available technology, we have developed the market-leading solution for cleanroom environments. Available in CRI 90+ and Cyanosis as standard, the new CR44L solution has an improved efficacy of 37% compared to the previous generation of Cleanroom LED product, delivering an outstanding 96lm/w.

Testing & PerformanceThe entire range has been photometrically, spectrally and thermally tested in our laboratory in Melbourne and then tested and verified by a NATA approved laboratory.

Tested to AS/NZS60598.1:2013, the new CR44L runs extremely cool (approximately 50% cooler than what these components are rated for). This ensures a thermally stable luminaire and a dramatically reduced lumen depreciation along with excellent colour stability.

All of the above results in ELA being able to deliver a luminaire with a performance of L90B10 100,000hrs.

Higher Colour RenditionThe CR44L is available in CRI 90+ as standard. This ensures excellent colour rendition, particularly in environments where correct colour is critical eg. laboratories, hospitals and medical centres.

Cyanosis Observation Index (COI) Clinical observation is an important part of medical diagnosis, along with the early detection of cyanosis. Cyanosis is the bluish discolouration in the skin and mucous membranes that indicate oxygen levels in the blood are dangerously depleted.

The standard defines Cyanosis Observation Index with an open ended numerical scale which ranks an artificial light source for the purpose of visual observation, a key fundamental to medical practitioners. This scale or COI cannot be greater than 3.3. The CR44L has a rating of 2.2 making it optimal for detecting changes in skin tones, meeting the Australian & New Zealand standards AS/NZS1680.2.5. Although this is an old standard, our BAT in LED now ensures we can move away from the use of T8 fluorescent products.

Low lumen version: Achieves 400 lux average (30W)

High lumen version: Achieves 600 lux average (47W)

One Product, Two SolutionsBy using Best Available Technology, we have been able to deliver two solutions in one luminaire.

Cleanroom LED IP44 CRI 90+


Designed to assist healthcare workers to detect cyanosis and other colour changes in the skin or body tissues, the Cleanroom LED IP44 CRI 90+ is COI compliant. (Cyanosis Observation Index 2.2).The LED boards used in this Cleanroom luminaire emit an increased amount of light between 620 and 700 nanometres (red wavelength) compared to standard LED boards. This range of light is optimal for detecting changes in skin tone. Dimming the luminaire does not affect its COI compliancy (Table 1). The wipe-down Delta diffuser is made up of a micro-prism louver in acrylic (PMMA) with a thin opal diffuser on the inside. This provides excellent glare control whilst delivering optimal lumens out of the luminaire. The Cleanroom range of luminaires has been developed to meet the requirements of specialist installations, where the luminaire requires protection against contamination. Designed to assist healthcare workers to detect cyanosis and other colour changes in the skin or body tissues, the Pleiad G3 Comfort CRI 90+ is COI compliant. (Cyanosis Observation Index 1.7). Installation Recessed mounting in unventilated or ventilated ceilings. Separate ballast and installation clip for easy and tool-free installation supplied as standard. An assembly plate must be used when mounting on soft tile ceilings. The luminaire must not be covered with insulation. In modern hospital wards, ambience can have a direct effect on patient recovery times. The aim is to create a comfortable, relaxing environment giving control of the immediate surroundings to the patient. Glare must also be minimised making the recumbent patient as comfortable as possible.


Wards

Pleasant glare-free lighting is essential for staff to undertake their work in wards. However, it is equally important to create a calm and safe environment, that gives patients the opportunity to rest and heal.

General Lighting

Centre ward illuminance should be sufficient to enable safe movement around ward areas. Patient ambient lighting should be a relaxing lower level of illumination.

Nightlight

Downlight only, dimmed to minimum. Sufficient illuminance to allow staff and patients to move around. Should not disturb sleeping patients. Emergency lighting can also be incorporated into the central downlights.

General Nursing Care

Medical practices carried out at bed space with curtains open or closed. A 25% tolerance is acceptable when curtains are closed.

Downlight and reading light dimmed to allow continuous observation at night.

ELA worked with our distributor, H.I. Lighting in Adelaide to meet particular requirements of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital. Reading lights, standard room luminaires and examination luminaires with cyanosis were required.

The Pleaid with anti-ligature kit was installed within mental health areas. Along with the Cleanroom IP65 for negative and positive pressure rooms. Each fitting within the project required a five pin wire by click, a tab fitted for lanyard and seismic restraint kits were as standard.

The Eira was created together with Speirs + Major, grounded in their vision for how modern healthcare lighting should perform.

The luminaire addresses the need for flexibility in hospital wards by combining a general and examination light in the same fitting, while contributing towards a more domestic feel in wards, corridors and nurses stations.

Equipped with an innovative performance ring, the same fitting can instantly provide a focused downlight for emergency and examination requirements. Daylight MimickingDaylight mimicking allows us to receive productivity boosts when required, as well as readying ourselves to slow down toward the end of the day and help us prepare for sleep.

Light Over The DayEspecially during the darker months we can stimulate the circadian rhythm with light, using lower levels of warm light in the morning, increasing to higher levels with cooler light until noon and then slowly return to lower levels and warm light in the afternoon. [fig1]

The biological clock, also called the circadian rhythm [fig2] (from the Latin circa dies, “about a day”) plays an important role in regulating wakefulness and sleep. If we can help that clock, we can help people feel better. By designing exceptional lighting systems, lighting can help increase concentration, motivation and improve subjective and objective well-being.

The idea is simply to imitate natural light, both in level and colour during the day. Cool intense light with a high blue is activating, warm dimmed light is relaxing.

Activating Light ShowersTo activate and promote concentration, we can “shower” in high levels of cool light for short periods throughout the day [fig3].

The combination of a V-shaped reflector and CDP diffuser have been used to mask the harsh micro points of LEDs, creating a panel of perfectly uniform luminance.The Vertex is positioned as the ideal solution for office and general lighting with an efficacy of 91lm/W,.The electronic driver is mounted to the rear of the luminaire, in an isolated thermal chamber. By separating the driver, the LEDs within the luminaire are kept at their lowest possible operating temperature. This ensures that the Vertex can offer the longest possible lifetime of its LED components. The expected useful lifetime of the Vertex is L70 at 100,000 hours.The LED boards used in the Vertex have been selected to achieve Zhaga compliance. (Cyanosis Observation Index 2.2).The LED boards used in this Cleanroom luminaire emit an increased amount of light between 620 and 700 nanometres (red wavelength) compared to standard LED boards. This range of light is optimal for detecting changes in skin tone. Dimming the luminaire does not affect its COI compliancy (Table 1). The wipe-down Delta diffuser is made up of a micro-prism louver in acrylic (PMMA) with a thin opal diffuser on the inside. This provides excellent glare control whilst delivering optimal lumens out of the luminaire. The Cleanroom range of luminaires has been developed to meet the requirements of specialist installations, where the luminaire requires protection against contamination. Designed to assist healthcare workers to detect cyanosis and other colour changes in the skin or body tissues, the Cleanroom IP44 Cyanosis LED is COI compliant. (Cyanosis Observation Index 2.2).The LED boards used in this Cleanroom luminaire emit an increased amount of light between 620 and 700 nanometres (red wavelength) compared to standard LED boards. This range of light is optimal for detecting changes in skin tone. Dimming the luminaire does not affect its COI compliancy (Table 1). The wipe-down Delta diffuser is made up of a micro-prism louver in acrylic (PMMA) with a thin opal diffuser on the inside. This provides excellent glare control whilst delivering optimal lumens out of the luminaire. The Cleanroom range of luminaires has been developed to meet the requirements of specialist installations, where the luminaire requires protection against contamination. Administration areas need to provide a user friendly and comfortable environment for all working in this vicinity. Visual comfort is important to the staff as they work long shifts and travel throughout many different areas of the hospital.


There is no escaping administration. Following rounds, Doctors head to the office to update patients records and provide information to colleagues on the next shift. This is a time for crossing paths with other staff, communication and concentration on medical documentation.

Product Focus: CombilumeCombilume is an inventive family of large surface area luminaires designed so you can develop imaginative light settings. Combilume is available in wall, ceiling or pendant versions, with direct or indirect light, in a number of sizes. Combine them together in creative clusters or use each one as a separate light feature. In Combilume, LED technology is really in its element. The modern light technology and side-emitting light diodes result in pleasant, even surfaces both for individual office work stations and for large rooms where people come together.

The variations of the Combilume are great for office environments, including administration areas within hospitals and medical areas. Visual comfort is created with the right amount of good quality light and a sophisticated light distribution. An excellent visual environment creates comfort and supports productivity. As always our LED luminaires have been developed with visual comfort in mind. By planning with ambient lighting we can create an environment that makes people more alert and able to perform better. The product has been designed as an LED lowbay solution for the transitional zones of underground car-parks but it may be used in any under-canopy application where a robust luminaire is required.

The front frame is made of 1.2mm stainless steel whilst the body is constructed of aluminium. The diffuser used is made of UV stabilised polycarbonate and the prims act as a light guide whilst eliminating glare.

It is available in black as standard but other colours are available on request.
