Healey Exhaust Notes Page 8 JAN-FEB. 2019

The Healey driving season in New England is way too short. Seems like we’re just getting our cars out of hibernation in April when it’s time to put them back to sleep again in October. But that long sleep does have some advantages. Those that have heated garages can turn to deferred maintenance and long-term projects. The rest of us can look back at last year’s events and plan for the future. The highlight of Healey season is “Summit,” an event started more than 20 years ago to bring members together from across the region. This year was no exception as the “Healey Seaside Summit” saw 135 registrants from thirteen different states, Canada, and the United Kingdom gather at the Wylie Inn and Conference Center in Beverly, MA for five days of Healey fun in August. Our guests of honor included AHCA president Gary Feldman and noted Healey restorer Bill Rawles from Bill Rawles Classic Cars in England’s Hampshire County, who along with his lovely wife, Rose, stole everyone’s hearts. (Well, Rose did, anyway. We just like Bill a lot). Those arriving on Sunday were immediately drawn into the Seaside theme with a cocktail party on the deck of the Beauport hotel overlooking Gloucester harbor, followed by a welcome reception explaining the week’s upcoming activities. Monday started out under clear skies for a drive along the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway, passing by the oceanfront “summer cottages” (read mansions) built by Boston Brahmins in the early 1900s that gave the North Shore the title of “The Gold Coast.” The ultimate destination was the picturesque town of Rockport where the world’s most famous fishing shack, “Motif #1”, has inspired artists through the years. This was the site of our “walking rally” where participants strolled amongst the shops and art galleries of Bearskin neck, searching for the answers to Rockport-related clues. Rallymaster Rick Neville had set the tone for anyone bold enough to challenge the correct answers to the rally questions with his red t-shirt carrying the slogan, “Keep Calm and GFY” where GFY did not stand for “Good for You.” Afternoon events featured a tech session on Healey distributors by Rob Medynski, proprietor of British Vacuum Units of Canterbury, NH, while the less mechanically inclined went to “Escape This Live”, a nearby popular escape room game location.

Then it was on to the highlight of the week. “The Great Lobstah Feed.” Tom and Judith Ann Webster invited everyone over to their home kitted out with large tents, a dinghy filled with drinks and a dinner complete with all the bounty the North Shore has to offer during summer including locally caught boiled lobster, fresh corn on the cob and plump, ripe tomatoes. To say everyone was pleasingly stuffed, would be an understatement. Tuesday was “Competition Day” with the gymkhana and Funkhana held at the City of Gloucester’s Magnolia Woods recreation center. The gymkhana course raced uphill along a curving road sprinkled with a roundabout and slaloms to a hilltop lot filled with a figure 8 and back down again that tested Sprites, big Healeys Jensen-Healeys and Nasty Boys equally. Meanwhile, the Funkhana featured a course laid out by our friends in the Austin-Healey Club of Southern Ontario that, in a strange twist, involved filling up cans of Molsons rather than emptying them.

Meanwhile, the non-competitors indulged in a bit of shopping sponsored by the “Woman Owned Businesses on the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway” where guests were welcomed in several shops with refreshments and an opportunity to purchase locally-themed items. The number of shopping bags they returned with indicated it was quite popular. No trip to the North Shore would be complete without a day of sailing and Larry Swift and Craig Hess organized an afternoon outing on two fishing schooners out of Gloucester, the Ardelle and the Thomas E. Lannon. It was an absolutely perfect day for a sail with warm sun, a cooling breeze, and more than a few rum punches consumed onboard. The circumnavigation of Gloucester harbor was complete with a war of signal canons between the two boats, punctuated by the rumble of Tom Webster’s 35’foot go-fast Jammin’ circling about with a photographer taking pictures. The twin 459s producing over 1000 hp exhibited not only impressive speed but impressive fuel consumption as Tom was later seen seeking a tow back to port after running out of fuel.

A beach party, hosted by Nick and Alexis Zarkades, amongst the shore-side gardens of Beverly’s Lynch Park capped the day’s events with sub sandwiches by the water, an ice cream social, and the always popular valve cover racers held in the park’s magnificently restored 1800s carriage house on the grounds that were once President Taft’s summer White House.

Wednesday morning featured tech sessions including a presentation from Barrett-Jackson Auctions on buying and selling Healeys, Rick Neville’s “Healeys and Hollywood” with photos and film clips of famous Healeys and their owners, and a remarkable presentation by our featured guest, Bill Rawles, describing in words and pictures their incredibly accurate reproduction of a 100S.

No Summit would be complete without a car show and with the cooperation of the National Park Service, all our pride and joys were displayed in the Salem Maritime National Historic Site right on Salem Harbor. The location brought plenty of visitors to cast their ballots for the popular vote while exhibitors could take a break to take in some of the shops, dining and historic sights of the “Witch City”.

The Seaside Summit was concluded with the “Gatsby Cocktails and Awards Banquet” held in the elegant confines of Tupper Manor, the former vacation home of Canadian shipping magnate Bryce Allan. The evening glittered as costumed guests did their best impression of Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan while gathering all the loot they won during the week. Grand Competitor Awards of a personalized drawing of their Sprite and Jensen-Healey by noted artist David Townsend of Sportscar Art in Rutland, Vt. were presented to Pete Sturtevant and Linda Hakala, respectively, while Best Costume events were presented by event sponsor Lyon-Waugh Auto Group to Sharon Brackett and Steve Bell.

Looking forward, Summit 2019 promises to be just as exciting. It will be held on the shores of New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee at the Margate Resort in Laconia. Featured events will include a luncheon tour of the lake, scenic rally and competition events. Watch the club website for further information: https://www.ahca-newengland.org/summit-2019.html

Wing 6 Tech Session January 19, 2019 By Bob Britton

Austin Healey club members joined members of British Cars of New Hampshire for a tech session on SU carburetors presented by Gary Gammons and Mike Spring of Sports Car Services in Keene, NH. In total 21 attended the session. Members attending from the AHC-NE club included Art and Cheryl Harvey, Dana Booth and friend Jack Horn, Eric Longbottom, Tom Gould, Tom Sullivan, Steve Trimble, Tom Williams and Bob Britton.

After a discussion on the simplicity of a SU carb and the mechanics of how it works Mike Spring went through a demonstration on how to adjust and tune a dual carb setup for maximum performance. There were many questions from the audience which both Mike and Gary providing answers and suggestions on the fine art of setting up SU carburetors. To wrap up the tech session Gary then showed the group how to replace the throttle shaft bushings which when worn can cause air leakage into the venturi of the carburetor which disrupts the proper air/fuel mixture. After the Tech session a smaller group of attendees went to lunch at Ramunto’s restaurant to enjoy more “shop talk” and some sandwiches and beer.

Everyone had plenty of time to return home before the big snow storm approached later that night.

Nuts & Bolts Corner Subjects covered during our

January 2019 Technical Conference Call

1. FLICKERING OF LED REAR LIGHTS ON 1962 AH SPRITE This caller installed new LED rear lights on his 1962 AH Sprite and also an after market electric fuel pump. When he turns on the lights, they flicker at the same rate as the fuel pumping action. What is the reason and is there a reasonable solution? He can not get the car inspected as is. ADVICE: It may be a matter of how you routed the circuit. The advisor runs his fuel pump on its own

grounded circuit & fuse. Make sure you have a solid ground for the tail lights, so that it will not seek a ground from

the fuel pump. To ensure the fuel pump has a solid ground, clean the ground wire and add some petroleum jelly to isolate the ground.

The second advisor suggested that if the grounding wire checks out ok, then add a ballast resisters to the LED bulbs.

A LED bulb will light up on one-tenth of a volt. If the ground circuit carries any power back to the bulb, that may cause it to light up. You will need to add a ballast resister at each LED bulb and that should solve your problem. Ballast resisters are available through Moss Motors and this fix will cost approx. $ 12.00

2. HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR LEATHER SEATS This caller asked for advice on what products to use to maintain his leather seats. ADVICE: The following summary is provided by Ted Cryer : The discussion item was advice on care of leather such as for the seats in our Healeys. Rick Ne-ville lead off saying that he has had good luck with leather care products from Meguiar’s. I offered that at the vintage car upholstery shop I where I had worked, the owner always suggested Lexol Conditioner to his customers. Hide Food is another product that has been around for many years. There was also a question on what may rejuvenate older leather? I mentioned that at the same upholstery shop they used a product called Color-Plus Soffener & Leather Conditioner with impressive success. We would apply a liberal amount, completely wetting the leather, and letting it soak for a day or two, followed by another coating if needed. Working the leather with your hands could also help. Bob Abbott added that he has had great success with this company, and lady, matching colors for leather in the past. Once he pro-vided a small patch to them. He always found her to be very helpful and excellent to deal with. Restoration guidelines

The 2019 Austin-Healey Originality Guide for Restoration and Registry Inspections (AKA: the Guidelines) are available for distribution.

For the 2019 Guidelines, we have added over 180 photographs which greatly clarifies the text.

We feel this was very successful and will continue to add more for 2020. The Policies for Concours Inspections, Score Sheets, has also been updated along with an update to

Supplement 13, Owners Handbooks. All told, we now offer over 700 pages of information on how Austin-Healeys were originally and how they will be inspected. It also includes

13 Supplements that go into more detail on specific subjects than the general text of the Guidelines.

Copies are available from Mike Osipik: [email protected] Just drop Mike an email and he’ll let you know what he needs.

Downloads through DropBox are $25.00 and CD mailed are $35.00. This is a bargain.

If you have not received them in the last several years, you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for your consideration, Randy Hicks

Chairman, Austin-Healey Concours Registry Committee

A note of inspiration from our own Tom Webster: In 2010, I had the good fortune of going to Sturgis, South Dakota with two buddies with our Harley Davidson’s. It was UNBELIEVABLE to see what is out there… truly. I would recommend anyone to go to this Conclabe, I rode my bike 1200 miles in six days...yes, sore butt...however, I saw only one pothole! There is a ‘however’: go with fresh oil, because the highway is used to get to the Parks and they cruise at 85/90 mph out there. Lastly, the temps were running in the 90’s all week—be pre-pared. Other than the above, it was a wonderful lifetime experience. GO GO GO !!!
