    HEADWAY UNIT 9 STBOOK

    4.VOCABULARY WORK

    TRUNK.- The thick main steam of a tree. In the text they explain how theeruption of the volcano seems.

    BLAZE .- to burn brightly and strongly.

    SWAY.- to move slowly from side to side. Ex.- the branches were swaying in the

    wind.

    MOB.- a large crowd of people. Ex.- an excited mob of fans were waiting outside.

    STRANDED.- left on the shore and unable to return to the water.Ex.- the ship was stranded on the sandbank.

    SHRIEK. scream . to give a loud high shout. Ex. The audience was shriekingwith laughter.

    WAILING.- to make a long loud high cry, especially because you are sad or in

    pain.

    Ex.- the cat was wailing to be left out.

    SNOWDRIFTS.- a deep pile of snow that has been blown together by the wind.

    VALVE.- A device in some musical instruments for changing the note.

    WHIRL.- to move around quickly in circles. Ex.- leaves whirled in the wind.

    OVERWHELMED.- to have such emotional effect in sb that it is difficult to know

    how to react. Ex. She was overwhelmed by feelings of guilty.

    SLANT.- to slope (sth that is higher at one end than the other). Ex.- slant your

    skies a little more to the left.

    BOW.- the front part of a boat.

    SLIDE.- move smoothly , quietly to move easily over a smooth or wet surface. Ex.-

    the drawers slide and out easily.

    Ex.. The drawers slide in and out easily.

    STERN.- serious and often disapproving . Ex.- the police are planning sterner

    measures to combat crime.

    JETTISON.- DISCARD. to get rid of sth /sb that you no longer need or want.

    Ex.- He was jettisoned s a team coach after the defeat.

    UNIMPEDED.- with nothing blocking or stopping . Ex. An unimpeded view of the

    bay.

    PANIC.- STRICKEN .- extremely anxious about sth in a way that prevents you

    from thinking clearly.

    PUNGENT.- direct and having a strong effect. Ex.- pungent criticism

    VOCABULARY AND PRONOUNCIATION

    1.-Homonyms.-

    1.- branches.- local offices belonging to the same company.

    In the vesuvious text , the arms of a tree.

    2.- trunk .- A big heavy box used to carry clothes on long journeys.

    In vesuvious is metaphorically described as arising like the trunk of a tree.

    3.- pine.- a verb meaning to miss s.o. and feel very unhappy as a result.

    In versus text, a pine is a type of tree.

    4.- stern.- very strict and serious. In Titanic the back of the ship.

    5.- deck. It has the same meaning as a pack of cards- In titanic, it means thefloor if the ship where people walk.

    2.- Identify the Homonyms.

    1.. One swallowdoesnt make a summer. A swallow (n)is a kind of bird.swallow.(v). to make food, drink etc. go down your throat into your stomach.

    Ex. Is difficult to swallow with a sore throat.

    2.- We spotteda really rare bird in the forest. To spot (v)is to catch sight of sth.

    spot (n).- a small round area that has a different colour or feels different from the

    surface it is on.

    Ex. I love Dalmatians- such beautiful spotted dogs.

    3.-Dont go making any rashpromise that you cant keep! A rash (adj) promise ismade without thinking.

    rash (n) an area of red skin spots on a persons skin caused by illness or areaction to sth.

    Ex. I must be allergic to sth. I have a terrible rash!

    4.- lessons were interrupted by a fire drill.- drill (n) is a fire practice.

    Drill (v) to make holes on the wall using a machine with a pointed end.

    Ex.- Could you drill a hole in the wall. I want to hang a picture.

    5.- I think he should scrap that idea. Its rubbish. !!!To scrap (v) is to throw away.scrap (n).- Is a small piece of something especially paper, fabric etc.

    Ex.. Do you have a scrap of paper to write down the phone number?

    ( also : a scrap book full of newspaper and magazine cuttings. )

    6.- Stop rambling and get to the point! To ramble (v) is to speak in a confused

    way .

    rambling (n) .- is the activity of walking for pleasure in the countryside.

    Ex.- My father loves rambling. Every weekend he goes walking in the hills with

    his friends.

    Homographs.- GROUP A

    WIND .- the cold wind blew in from the north

    WIND .- To have many bends and twists. (wind up ) To bring sth to an end. Itstime to finish. Can we wind the discussion up ?

    REFUSE.- To say that you will not do sth. I refuse to help you any more, you are

    lazy and need to take responsibility.

    REFUSE.- rubbish. Waste material that has been thrown away.

    Refuse collector is the official term for a dustman.

    DEFECT.- A fault in sth or in the way it has been made which means that it is not

    perfect.

    I took the machine back to the store because it had a defect.

    DEFECT. (from sth) To leave a political party, country etc. to join another thatis considered to be an enemy.

    During the cold war, spies used to defect from the Soviet Union to the USA.

    GROUP B

    WOUND.- An injury to a part of the body. After the fight, one man had a terrible

    wound in his side.

    WOUND.- (of a road or river ) to have many bends and twists. The path wound

    down to the beach.

    MINUTE.- each of the 60 parts of an hour. Its 10 minutes to six.

    MINUTE.- extremely small. The kitchen on the boat is minute.

    OBJECT.- A thing that can be seen and touched but is not alive. Glass and plastic

    objects lined in the shelf.

    OBJECT.- To say that you disagree with . many local people object to the building

    of the new airport.
