    Dear Candidate

    Thank you for your interest in the position of Headteacher at Christs School.

    We are making this appointment at a key moment when we are expanding the school from afour form 11-16 mixed comprehensive to a five form 11-18 mixed comprehensive. The post 16provision will hopefully develop to one of between 200-250 students. We are also in the

    process of converting to an Academy. This post is therefore an opportunity for someone ofsuitable experience and expertise to have a major impact across the whole school and localcommunity at an historic point in the schools history that began nearly 300 years ago in 1713.Christs School is a Church of England comprehensive school for 600 young people agedbetween 11 and 16. It is situated on an enviable site adjacent to Richmond Park in Richmondupon Thames in South West London. We have excellent links with our feeder primary schoolsand the local community. We are proud to be a faith school and welcome students fromChristian and other religious backgrounds.

    All members of our community are encouraged to learn and achieve. We recognise and

    celebrate success wherever we can. We believe that we all have talent and that it is ourresponsibility to identify, nurture and develop that talent to the best of our abilities with thehelp, guidance and support of others.

    There are currently 37 full time and 8 part time members of the teaching staff. We have 46support staff on a variety of full and part time contracts. Our catering and cleaning staff areemployed by sub-contracted firms.

    Our outcomes have dramatically improved over the last seven years. Last summer 93%of ouryear 11 cohort attained +5 A*-C GCSE (or equivalent) grades, with 73%including GCSEenglish & mathematics. The Ofsted report from the January 2011 inspection and thesubsequent SIAS inspection report were very favourable indeed. They are available to access

    Post: Headteacher of Christs Church of England Secondary School

    Accountable to: The Governing Body

    The Headteacher will carry out his/her professional duties inaccordance with and subject to the National Conditions of Employmentfor Headteachers and Education and Employment legislation.

    The Headteacher is accountable to the Governors for the standardsachieved and the conduct, management and administration of theSchool subject to any policies which the Department for Education andthe Governors may make.

    Purpose of Post: To provide professional and strategic leadership for the School inorder

    To secure (a) its success and development, (b) high qualityeducation for all its students; and (c) consistently high standardsof achievement.

    Responsibilities and Duties

    The Headteacher is expected to lead and manage the School and to model its Christian ethosand values, setting an example for the whole School community to follow.

    The general range of duties and responsibilities is outlined below:-

    1. Strategic Direction and Development of the School

    The Headteacher working with the Governing Body will develop a strategic view for the Schoolin its community within the local, national and international context and will:

    Lead by example providing inspiring and purposeful leadership for the staff andstudents.

    Work in partnership with the Governing Body, staff, parents/carers, the Department ofEducation and the Southwark Diocesan Board of Education, in upholding the ethos andvalues which underpin the School.

    Promote the distinctive Christian character of the School and ensure that Christian

    values underpin the whole life of the School. Working under the direction of the Governing Body, formulate the overall aims and

    objectives for the School, mindful of its status as a Church of England School.

    Working under the direction of the governing Body to satisfactorily extend the school toFive Form Entry, 6th Form and Academy Status

    Under the direction of the Governing Body, create and implement a shared andinclusive School Development Plan, underpinned by sound financial planning, whichidentifies priorities and targets for ensuring students achieve consistently highstandards and make progress, increasing teacher effectiveness and securing schoolimprovement.

    Ensure that all those involved in the School are committed to its aims, motivated toachieve them and involved in meeting long, medium and short term objectives andtargets which secure the educational success of the School.

    Ensure that all staff and students are challenged and encouraged to achieve their fullpotential by establishing a culture of high expectations, mutual support and acommitment to life-long learning.

    Ensure that the management, finances, organisation and administration of the Schoolsupport its vision and aims.

    Ensure that policies and practices take account of national, local and school data,including inspection and research findings and the outcomes of school self-review andany reviews carried out by the Governing Body.

    Monitor and evaluate the performance of the School and respond and report to theGoverning Body as required.

    Monitor, evaluate and review the effects of the Schools priorities and targets and takeaction if necessary.

    Ensure that safeguarding procedures and processes are comprehensivelyimplemented.

    Support and further develop the partnership between the School and the Diocese ofSouthwark.

    2. Leadership and Management

    The Headteacher will lead, motivate, support, challenge and develop staff to secureimprovement and will:

    Maintain a safe and secure environment for all staff, students and the schoolcommunity.

    Participate in the recruitment and selection of teaching and support staff.

    Plan, allocate, support and evaluate work undertaken by groups, teams andindividuals, ensuring clear delegation of tasks and devolution of responsibilities in amanner consistent with their conditions or employment.

    Ensure a high level of pastoral care for staff and students. Implement and sustain effective systems for the performance management of all staff.

    Lead, co-ordinate and monitor the continuing professional development of all staff,including the induction of newly qualified teachers, based on assessment needs and inrelation to the standards for qualified teacher status (QTS), the career entry profile andstandards for induction.

    Ensure that professional duties are fulfilled, as specified in the Terms and Conditions ofService of Teachers.

    Arrange for a Deputy Head or other suitable person to assume responsibility for thedischarge of the Headteachers function at any time when absent from school.

    Promote community cohesion through extended service and links to the community.

    3. Accountability

    The Headteacher will account for the efficiency and effectiveness of the School and will:

    Create and develop an environment in which all the staff recognise that they areaccountable for the success of the School.

    Present a coherent and accurate account of the Schools performance in a formappropriate to the range of audiences including the Governors, Ofsted and others toenable them to play their part effectively.

    Encourage parents/carers to support their childs learning so as to achieve theirindividual and the Schools targets for improvement.

    Maintain records as required.

    Provide information, data and reports to the Governing Body to enable it to meet its

    responsibilities for securing effective teaching and learning and improved standards ofachievement and for achieving efficiency and value for money.

    To carry out any such duties as may be reasonably required by the Governing Body.

    4. Teaching and Learning

    The Headteacher working with the Governing Body will secure and sustain effective teachingand learning across all age ranges throughout the School and will:

    Monitor and evaluate teaching and learning, the standards of students achievementand set targets for improvement.

    Create and maintain an environment and a code of conduct to promote and secureoutstanding teaching, effective learning, high standards of achievement, excellentbehaviour, discipline and attendance.

    Determine, organise, implement and monitor the curriculum and its assessment andensure that they

    o Meet with the Governing Bodys and relevant statutory requirements

    o Are relevant to the need of all students across the full spectrum of abilities

    o Fulfil the Headteachers duties under national legislation

    o Lead to further improvements in educational provision

    Further maintain and develop effective links with the community in order to extend thecurriculum and enhance teaching and learning.

    Create and maintain an effective partnership with parents/carers to support andimprove students achievement and personal development.

    Determine, organise and implement a vision for the personal, social, spiritual and moraldevelopment of all students in the School.

    Determine and implement policies and promote:

    1. Self-discipline and regard for authority and the law

    2. Good conduct, behaviour and attendance3. Positive strategies for promoting a celebration of diversity and inclusion,resolving any incidents swiftly and effectively

    5. Efficient and Effective Deployment of Staff and Resources

    The Headteacher will deploy people and resources efficiently and effectively to meet specificobjectives in line with the Schools strategic plan and within the financial resources availablefrom various sources.

    The Headteacher will:

    Contribute to the formulation of policies and procedures of the Governing Body concerning theSchools resource and asset management.

    Set appropriate priorities for expenditure, allocation of funds and effectiveadministration and control by:

    1. Effective management of the Schools budget

    2. Rational allocation and monitoring of time, space and material resources

    3. Ensuring effective and safe arrangements for the siting and storage ofmaterial and equipment

    Manage and organise the accommodation efficiently and effectively to ensure it meetsthe needs of the curriculum and health and safety regulations.

    Make arrangements for the security and effective supervision of the Schools buildings,their contents and the grounds.

    Ensure that any lack of maintenance, repairs or modification, including breaches ofHealth and Safety legislation, is acted upon promptly and in accordance with thedelegation arrangements of the Governing Body.

    Ensure effective working relationships with external agencies and services contractedto the School.

    Work with Governors and senior colleagues to recruit and retain staff of the highestquality, mindful of safeguarding requirements.

    Manage, monitor and review the range, quality and use of all available resources inorder to improve the quality of education, improve students achievements, ensureefficiency and secure value for money.
