Dear Parents and Carers,
It is hard to believe that we are now half way through the school year! We are looking forward to seeing you next half term
at Parents’ Evenings and will be able to show you the progress your child has made so far this year. As you will be aware,
the national curriculum, assessment system and procedures for testing children has changed this academic year. Please see
our website for more information about this. I will also be leading presentations on the new assessment system during
Parents’ evenings and do encourage you to come along and ensure that you feel confident in tracking your child’s progress.
In staffing news, we are now able to inform you that Mrs Emily Evans will be our new Deputy Head Teacher from April
and she is looking forward to getting to know all of our families. We are also delighted to announce the return of both Mrs
Saddington and Mrs Griffin after half term, which also means that Mrs Webster will be returning to her role as Y1
Classroom Assistant. We are grateful to Ms Finch and Ms De Tuischer for their work at St. Paul’s this half term covering
staff absence. We also very much look forward to formally welcoming Mrs Alison Forrester to our team as our Year 2
morning Teaching Assistant after the half term break. We wish hope you all have a lovely half term and look forward to
seeing you on Monday 22nd February.
Football Champions! Our Year 3&4 Football Team played in a 6 a side
tournament at CCC against five other schools from the borough. They won four games and drew one, scoring fifteen goals and conceding just three. This gave them
a whopping thirteen points to win the tournament. Well done to the boys for an outstanding team
performance. Thanks also to our super supporters!

Netball Success
On 5th February our Y5/6 Netball Team put in
an outstanding performance in the Primary High
5 Competition, coming 2nd in their group and
going through to the ‘Plate Round’ where they
came 4th. 24 teams took part, meaning that we
came 10th overall! Surbiton Girls’ School won
overall but we are delighted at such a strong
result and excellent team play! Well done!

Class news
Red: Red class have been learning all about Lent and Ash Wednesday this week. We made pancakes and
sprinkled sugar and lemon on yum yum! Then we had a special challenge to flip the pancakes in order
of the 2x table.
Yellow: Yellow class learnt about Shrove and Ash Wednesday and found out why people celebrate Pancake
day. We were very excited to look at different cultures and countries to find out about different ways
of celebrating 'Pancake day' all over the world. We listened and followed instructions of how to make
pancakes and had lots of fun tasting them. In Maths we learnt how to use our knowledge of number
bonds to 10 when adding up three numbers.
Blue: In Literacy we have been learning to sequence, retell and write traditional tales. We have even been
creating and describing our own alternate characters. We have been finding patterns in times tables in
maths, ordering fractions and finding fractions of shapes. We have really enjoyed creating vehicles
from different material and investigating their suitability for different purposes in Theme.
Year 3: We have enjoyed weighing, measuring and investigating if tall people can jump further—we also
looked at how honest supermarkets are with the weight on their packets. We really liked learning
about different types of soil and investigated their permeability.
Year 4: We have been writing fantasy stories involving sweets, a unicorn, Mr Marshmallow and a gummy
snake! We really impressed Mrs Hemming with our fraction work and some of use were even able to
find fractions of numbers involving decimals. We’re really enjoying developing our hockey skills in
PE and have been playing small matches.
Year 5: In English we have been writing Aztec legends based on Robin Hood. We have also been learning to
use semi-colons and writing using compound and complex sentences. In maths we celebrated Shrove
Tuesday by counting the number of times we could flip a pancake, bounce and ball and the laps we
could complete carrying an egg and spoon and then representing this information on line graphs. We
used our Aztec Sun Stone designs to make our own versions out of clay.
Year 6: We have been enjoying writing and performing rap poetry based on a fairy tale in English,
incorporating contractions, slang and nicknames. For Internet Safety day we learnt how to use
webcams safely and created posters to inform others. We also had a fantastic afternoon at
Kingsmeadow for our Junior Citizenship training.
