REPORT OF THE I.Q.A.C.
H.V.DESAI COLLEGE OF COMMERCE, ARTS AND SCIENCE, PUNE 2
ACADEMIC YEAR - 2004-2005.
PART A
As per the plan of action chalked out for the academic year 2004-2005, the following
programmes were implemented:
A. College Level:-
In order to achieve the desired target of the institution stated in the Mission Statement, the
college planned the activities as below:-
Academic:-
1) Each faculty planned the teaching programmes, working schedule and activities to be
undertaken. Each department had its plans.
2) Various lectures were planned by each individual faculty member. Commerce faculty
planned to have a Seminar/ workshop. The Heads were asked to motivate their teaching staff
to attend seminars, workshops in other colleges and universities. They were also asked to
participate in these programmes actively along with their research papers. The Subject
teachers planned different activities to motivate the students to participate in various
curricular and co-curricular activities.
4) Remedial teaching programmes were planned for the weaker students of various departments
like Accountancy, Mathematics, Economics, English and Science etc.
5) Each faculty planned to teach the advance learners.
6) The Library Committee decided to provide additional facilities to the students.
The Library – Reading hall would be open till 9 p.m. everyday, during the
examination period. It also decided to increase the Library facilities and purchase
more reference material.

7) Each department planned to have question banks, tutorials, surprise tests etc.
8) Teaching faculty which were required to qualify SET / NET exam., were encouraged to
prepare for it seriously. Also faculty are promoted to pursue research work such as M. Phil/
Ph.D.
9) Each department was asked to undertake at least one Major / Minor Research Project.
10) Community Services:
The N.S.S. unit planned to offer the best possible community service. The Unit planned One
Day camps, Blood Donation Camps, Dindi (Holy Procession), Tea Day Camp, Village
adoption, Tree Plantation etc.
11) It was planned to purchase additional computers for the administration section.
12) More number of students would be provided with financial assistance by the college .
13) The committee planned to have more activities of the Alumni Association & the Parent-
Teacher Association.
14) Additional sport kits and other facilities would be increased to motivate more students to
participate in sports activities.
15) Guidance & Counseling unit would be more efficient. A separate office & staff would be
provided for it. The Placement Cell would be provided extra manpower and additional
facilities for efficient functioning.
16) Prepare proposals for Quality Improvement programme of Pune University.

PART – B
I. GENERAL ACTIVITIES REFLECTING THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
OF THE INSTITUTION.
a) To advance the cause of higher education among middle and lower income groups and
among students coming from traditional business sections.
The college admits the students coming from middle and lower income groups. There are
number of students coming from traditional business sections. All the educational and other
facilities are made available to these students for advancement of the cause of higher
education among them. In the year 2004-05, majority number of students were admitted to
the first year of Arts, Commerce and Science.
b) To provide an environment which fosters continuous improvement and innovation with
technical support and facility to enhance student and faculty effectiveness.
During the year, the college has provided such environment to the students & all the faculty
members with maximum technical support and faculty effectiveness. Faculty of Commerce
has an independent Commerce Laboratory. The attempt is being made to organize various
lectures regarding career guidance, value education etc. with the help of the technical support
such as audio- visual aids, The placement cell has also functioned effectively during the year.
Mr. Yashodhan Mithare looked after the cell, many students were benefited. A computer-
training programme was provided to some students, teachers and non teaching staff
members.
c) To inculcate in students the need for self-employment and the value of dignity of
Labour.
N.S.S. Unit of the college has been striving for creating awareness of the self -
employment and the value of dignity of labour. Various activities such as Lecture Series,
Demonstrations, Road Shows, Cleanliness Drives, etc. were organized during this year.
1) A seminar on „Child Labour‟ was organized by „Child Line Organization.‟ Students from
15 colleges participated in this seminar on 13 /2/2005.
2) A Guest lecture on „Entrepreneurship‟ was organized on 28/02/2005 Speaker-
Mrs. Ashwini Joshi,Renowned Entrepreneur.

3) Students from the college participated in the seminar „Entrepreneurial Skill
Development‟ Organised by T.J.College, Khadki in 16/2/2005.
4) A Guest lecture by Mr. Rairikar, Director , Maratha Chamber of Commerce and
Agriculture (MCIIA) , was organized on 11/9/2004 on „Dasbodh & Management‟.
5) The projects carried out by Dept. of Physics and other Science Departments helped
students for self employment and value of dignity of labour.
6) A lecture and demonstration on „Opportunities of Employment, in the field of
Information Technology’ by Mr. Dipak Shikarpur, a renowned computer expert and
Director of Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited, Pune was organized on
16 /8/2004.
7) A Day long Seminar on „Opportunities in the field of Air Hostess & Flight Stewards‟ was
organized on 26 /8/2004 in collaboration with the Franklin Institute of Airhostesses, Pune.
d) To provide a sound academic base for an overall development of personality
for a successful career.
- Sound academic base, being the main objective of the college, every responsible
individual worked hard for the overall development of personality of students for their
successful career. All the required facilities were provided to the teachers and students for
their academic excellence.

5) Guest lectures under Quality Improvement Scheme by Mr. S.M. Joshi on “Recent Trends
in Marketing” on 24/2/2005. - Mr. P.S.Vaze, Lecturer, Department of Commerce, Ness
Wadia College, Pune on „Trade Finance‟ on 1 /3/2005.
6) Guest lecture on „Opportunities in I.T. Sector‟ by Mr.Deepak Shikarpur on 16 /8/2005.
7) Seminar on opportunities in Airways (Air Hostess and Flight Steward) was organized by
Franklin Institute of Air Hostess on 26 /8/2005.

1) A lecture on „Budget 2004‟ by the staff academy – Speaker - Dr.Santosh Dastane a Senior
Economist and Ex-Controller of Examinations, University of Pune. Dt. 19/07/2004.
2) Mr. Vikram Gujar participated in a One Day Seminar on “Influential Education” on
23/08/2004 organized by Marathawada Mitra Mandal College, Pune-04.
3) The students of F.Y.B.Com. visited Marathi Sahitya Parishad, Pune on 11/09/2004.
4) An Inauguration of Commerce Association on 11/09/2004 by Mr. Rairikar, Director Maratha
Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture.
5) Participation of lecturers in „A Workshop on Marketing beyond 2004‟ organized by
Marathwada Mitra Mandal, Commerce College, Pune-04.
6) Principal Dr.C.N.Rawal participated in a Two Day State Level Seminar organized by G.S.
Mahavidyalaya, Vardha on 26 & 27/9/2004. Principal Dr. C.N. Rawal also presented his
research paper.
7) The college organized an „Aptitude Test for Second and Third year students of Commerce‟ on
16-10-2004. Dr. P.M. Alegaonkar, a known psychologist conducted this test.
8) A One Day Seminar on “Professional Taxation” was organized for the students of
T.Y.B.Com. on 2/11/2004.
9) Principal Dr.C.N. Rawal presented his Research paper in the Two Days “National Workshop
on GATTS; IMPACT INDIA,” Organised by Brihan Maharashtra Commerce college, Pune,
on 6th
& 7 /12/2004. He also chaired one session.
10) Ms.Vidya Tikute and Ms. Srividya Subramaniam presented their Research papers in the
„State Level Seminar on Urban Cooperative Banks in New Millennium‟ organized by Garware
College of Commerce, Pune-04 on 11 & 12 /1/2005.
11) Dr. P. K. Pisal Participated in the workshop on “The Importance of Indian Entrepreneurship
in the Global Economy” Organized by Sarda College, Ahmednagar on 6/01/2005.
12) Ms. Vidya Tikute arranged a visit of our commerce students to the weekly Market day in the
neighboring Village, Loni-Kalbhor, District-Pune on 8/01/2005.
13) The Department of Commerce organized a lecture on “Accounts of Non- Trading
Organizations by Kiran Kanani on 13/01/2005.

14) A lecture on „The Importance of Ayurveda in the Life of Women‟ was organized in
collaboration with “Woman Empowerment Cell, Pune, by a reputed personality, Vaidya
Shri Khadiwale on 24/01/2005.
15) The Dept. of Commerce organized a visit of Third year commerce students to the College
of Agriculture, Pune on 28/01/2005.
16) The Dept. of Commerce organized a lecture on „Time-and Stress Management‟ for the
Teaching and Non-teaching Staff on 02/02/2005.
17) Mrs. Dhobale, lecturer in Economics ,participated in a One Day Seminar on “Recent Trends
in Banking”, organized by Mahatma Phule Mahavidyalaya, Pimpri, Pune
18) The Commerce Dept. organized a One Day Workshop on „Marketing in New Millennium‟
on 6/02/2005.
19) A One Day Seminar on “Child Line”, was organized on 13/02/2005. The objective of this
seminar was to create awareness about the “Child Protection and its Rights,” Students from
15 colleges in Pune city participated in this activity.
20) Mr. Vikram Gujar & Mr. Yashodhan Mithare, lecturers from commerce Department,
participated in the Orientation Course organized by the Academic Staff Academy, Pune
University, Pune from 24/01/2005 to 20/02/2005.
21) Ms. M.U. Gokhale participated in a One Day University Level workshop on “Marketing &
Swot Analysis”, organized by Mamasaheb Mohol Mahavidyalaya, Pune on 13/01/2005.
22) Ms. Vidya Tikute and Mr. D.K.Shirude participated in the Refresher Course organized by
Academic Staff College, Pune University, Pune.
Following lectures of the experts were organized under the Quality Improvement
programmes of Pune University, Pune:
1. „Development of Entreprenurship‟, by Mrs. Ashwini Joshi- Date-28/02/2005.
2. „Indian and Global Economic Growth‟, by Dr.Vasudha Garde. Date:- 23/02/2005.
3. New Streams in Marketing-Shri A.M.Joshi,Dt.-23/02/2005. “Trade Finance‟ by Mr.Waze
Date-1/03/2005.
4. Mr. A.P. Kulkarni and Dr. P.K. Pisal participated in the National Level Seminar on 17th
& 18th
March, 2005.

SCIENCE FACULTY
Department of Chemistry:
1. Chemical Society of Pune University conducts „Chemiad‟ every year for F.Y.B.Sc.
Students to increase the interest in the subject. This exam was conducted on 2 /1/2005.
Seventy five students participated in this examination.
2. Visit to laboratory in Department of Chemistry University of Pune was arranged on
15/12/2005, 36 students participated in this visit.
3. Lectuers of following eminent personalities were organized by the department:-
i) Dr.A.K.Nikumbh
ii) Dr.S.K.Pardeshi
iii) Dr.Mohmad Kudratullah
4. Anand Vyakhanmala (Lecture Series on Social Issues)
Department of Physics :
Department of Physics conducted following activities during the academic year 2004-05:-
1. Study Tours:
a) A study tour was arranged to the Koyana Hydroelectric Power Station on 22 /2/2005.
50 students of IInd and IIIrd year participated in this study tour.
b) A visit was arranged to various Science Laboratories of University of Pune and Science
and Technology Park on the occasion of Science Day on 28 /2/2005.
2. Participation of students in Indian Physics Association Competition:
The competition was organized by Abeda Inamdar College, Pune. Following students
participated in the quiz competition.
i) Shantanu Kulkarni (T.Y.B.Sc.)
ii) Chaitanya Joshi ( S.Y.B.Sc)
c) Lecture Competition : This competition was conducted by Baburaoji Gholap College,
Sangavi, Dist.Pune. Following students participated in the competition.

ii) Ashwini Ambedkar ( T.Y.B.Sc.)

3. Guest Lectures:
Following guest lectures were arranged under the Quality Improvement Programme:
a) Dr. Jaydeep Sali (Dept. of Physics, University of Pune) Topic: Sustainable Energy Sources.
b) Dr. B. N. Pawar (Dept. of Physics, Bharati Deemed University, Pune)
4. International Year of Physics: As the year 2005 marks the centenary of Einstein‟s three
famous papers on Relativity, Photoelectric effect and Brownian motion, this has promoted
United Nation General Assembly to declare the year 2005 as the „International Year of
Physics‟ (IYP 2005).
Indian Physics Association (IPA) and BARC, Mumbai conducted a Physics Talent Search
Examination for Students of XI, XII standard. Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students and
also for College Teachers as a part of celebration of International Year of physics 2005. This
was an opportunity for students as well as teachers to get national and international recognition.
Department of Physics coordinated this activity for the Western Maharashtra Region.
This programme was inaugurated by the hands of Dr. Pandit Vidyasagar, a well-known scientist ,
Dept. of Physics, University of Pune.
On this occasion Mr.Khole, Sub Editor, Daily SAKAL, Pune and Dr.Anil Lachake, Scientist,
NCL, Pune were present. Under this programme a lecture of Dr. Niwas Patil on “Enistein and
His Discoveries” was organized for science students.
Department Of Mathematics:-
The faculty members attended the following workshops, Seminars and conferences:
a. A One Day Workshop on „The Implementation of New Pattern in Mathematics‟ at
F.Y./S.Y.B.Sc. in Mathematics held at Arts, Commerce and Science college, Sonai,
Ahmednagar on 17 /2/2004.
b. A Workshop on „Discrete Mathematics‟ held on March 21-24, 2004 in Department of
Mathematics, University of Pune.
c. A Workshop on the „Qualitative Theory of Ordinary Differential Equations‟ 23 to
27/11/2004 held at Dept. of Mathematics, University of Pune.
d. A One Day Seminar on „ Legal Rights of Women‟ held at Saraswati Mandir, Night
college of Commerce and Arts, Pune on 11 /2/2005.

2. Dept. Of Botany:
1. Dr. Mrs. V. S. Nair got recognition as a post Graduate teacher in Botany for the period of
1-3-2005 to 28-02-2010.
2. Dr. Mrs. V. S. Nair attended National Symposium on „Recent Trends in Modern Biology‟ at
Dept. of Zoology, University of Pune. During 17 to 19
/2/2005.
3. Dr. Mrs. V. S. Nair attended 25th
Anniversary meeting of IWSA at ARI on 7/4/2004.
3. Dept. of Statistics:
1. The Department organized Lectures for the students who have offered statistics as one of the
subjects and appeared for statistics quiz, organized by Dept. of Statistics, University of Pune.
Mr. Aniruddha Ghate (S.Y.B.Sc.) was selected in the second round of Statistics Quiz held at
Baramati, Dist.-Pune.
2. Mr. D. D. Patil attended a workshop on „Probability and its Applications‟ from 7/12/2004 to
10/12/2004 at S.P. College Pune.
3. Mr. D.D. Patil registered himself for M. Phil. course in University of Pune.
4. The Dept organized following lectures on Medical Awareness in the College :-
1. “Importance of Physical Exercise” by Dr. Vijay Setiya, Medical Director,
Siddharth Hospital and Burn Center, Pune Date 25/01/2005.
2. “Importance of Ayurved” by Dr. Mandar Bedekar.
4. Dept.Of Zoology:
1. Mr. D.C. Gorakhe attended a seminar on „Scenario of Zoology,‟ at undergraduate level
organized by Dept. of Zoology, Baburao Gholap College, Pune on 14/02/2004.
2. Mr. D.C. Gorakhe attended a workshop on „Doctor‟s Perspectives about Disease in Medical
Zoology.‟ at B.J.S.College, Wagholi on 24-9-2004.
3. Mr. D.C. Gorakhe & Mr. P.M.Pahade attended a Refresher Course at V.P. College, Baramati
from 18-03-2005 to 7-4-2005 in the subject „Life Sciences & Biotechnology.”
4. Mr. P.M.Pahade attended a Refresher Course in Life Sciences at Botany Dept. University of
Pune in Jan-2005.

5. The Dept. organized a workshop on „Sketching and Labeling Skills in Zoology‟ for F.Y.B.Sc.
Students from 26 to 31/7//2004.
6. The Dept. undertook various projects on curricular topics with value added content. The
projects were prepared in Sept.2004 by F.Y.B.Sc. Students.
7. The Dept. organized the Ecological Tour of Botany Dept. to Temghar Dam in Sept.2004.
8. The Gappastakha Programme was organized for the overall development of students. The
programme involved interactions of students with each other and quests. It was the third year
of the activity. The programmes were conducted on the following dates:-
July-10 & 24, Aug.- 7 & 21 , Sept.-4 & 25, Oct.-9 & 16 2004.
9. Educational tour to Shrivardhan and Harihareshwar for the Students of S.Y.B.Sc. was
organized on Jan.-2005.
10. A visit to Apiculture Institute was organized for the students of S.Y.B.Sc.
Dept. Of Microbiology:
1. The Department organized following activities:-
a. Visit to K.E.M.Hospital, Pune Pathology Laboratory and Blood bank.
b. Visit to Katraj Dairy, Pune.
c. Visit to Chintamani Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana, Theur.
d. T.Y.B.Sc.female students organized a Blood Group Checking Camp for about 100 girls in
the college as a part of activity of „Women Empowerment Cell‟.
e. Seminar for S.Y.B.Sc. & T.Y.B.Sc. students was held on Biochemistry and Medical
Microbiology.
f. Visit to Parvati Water Purification Plant.
g. Mrs. P.S.Abhyankar participated in two workshops organized by Students welfare
Dept.University of Pune.
h. The Dept. organized “The Inter-Collegiate Mehandi Competition, in Co-Ordination with
Students‟ Welfare Dept., University of Pune.
i. The Dept. organized a one day visit to Vidnyan Ashram, Pabal Dist.-Pune. In co-
ordination with Students‟ Welfare Dept. University of Pune.
j. Mrs. P.S.Abhyankar worked on a Minor research project aided by U.G.C. on
„Myxobacteria – Isolation, Cultivation and Preservation and their possible Role in
Control of Heavy Metal Pollution.‟
k. Mrs. R.B.Patwardhan was relieved to pursue her Ph.D. under faculty Improvement
Programmes Scheme of U.G.C.

Arts Faculty :
Dept. of Political Science :
1. Students of S.Y. & T.Y.B.A. prepared various projects on relevant topics. 24 Projects were
submitted to the Dept. Necessary reference material and other aids were provided to the
students.
2. Students were motivated to participate in Elocution & Debating Competition at Intercollegiate
Level.
3. Students of the department were provided with Newspapers.
4. A film show on “Panchayat Raj & Women” was organized for the students.
5. A students‟ visit to Gokhale Institute of Economics & Political Science, Pune and Alochana
Santha was organized for the students.
6. The students of the Dept. attended the session, “Mock Parliament” held at S.P.College,
Pune- 02.
7. A visit to „Vidhan Bhavan & Mantralaya, Mumbai was arranged for the students.
Dept. Of History.
1. A Two Days‟ Camp was organized at Rajgadh, Dist.Pune, Forty students participated in the
camp actively.
2. The study tours were arranged to Shaniwar Wada, Agakhan Palace, Lal Mahal, Raja Kelkar
Musium, Kesari Office, Pune.
3. A One Day Camp at Sinhagad, was arranged. The students were explained the entire history of
Chh. Sivaji Maharaj and the related information during these visits.
4) A study tour was organized to Yerawada Mental Hospital. Lecture of the Psychologist was
arranged during this visit.

e) To have community orientation and civil responsibilities in their outlook in order to have
community orientation and to develop a sense of Civic Responsibilities among the students,
the following activities were undertaken:-
1) In association with University of Pune, the college organized a „Wruksha Dindi‟. A large
number of teachers and students from other Colleges & Universities also participated in this
activity on 9/06/2004.
2) The Alumni Association held a meeting on 12-09-2004. They made the drinking water
facility (Panpoi) available during the Ganesh Festival on Tilak Road, Pune.
3) A River cleaning Project was undertaken.
4) A Camp was organized in association with the Civil Defence from 13 to 20/9/2004.
f) To develop an orientation towards the national and global needs as responsible citizens :
Following activities were undertaken to develop an orientation among the students towards the
national and global needs as responsible citizens :
The N.S.S. Unit, the Sports Dept. and other departments participated actively in following
activities:-
a. Study Tours such as visit to the Vidhan Bhavan, Mantralaya, Various institutes etc. were
organized.
b. The College Staff Academy oragnised Lectures on topics such as “Budget 2004.”
c. One Day Camps, a Special Winter Camp & Blood Donation Camps were organized by the
N.S.S. Unit.
2. NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES INITIATED:
1. Dept. of Zoology:- A Programme on “Energy Conservation and Environment” was initiated
along with the Dept. of Botany.

3. INNOVATIONS IN CURRICULAR DESIGN AND TRANSACTION :
A. Prin. Dr. C.N. Rawal and Mr. A.P. Kulkarni participated actively in the „Restructuring of the
syllabus of B.Com. and M.Com.‟
B. Dr. K.C Mohite is involved in designing of B.Sc./ M.Sc. ( Physics) and M.Tech (Energy)
syllabus of University of Pune.
C. Mock Interview Sessions‟ was initiated in the subject, „Business Communication.‟
4. INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMME STARTED :
A discussion session on „Budget 2004‟ was organised by the Dept. of Commerce.
Interdisciplinary Seminars, Lectures and discussions were arranged by the
Dept. of Commerce.
The Dept. of Zoology in association with the Dept of Botany jointly took up different projects.
Study visits of the students of all faculties to various historical places.
5. EXAMINATION REFORMS IMPLEMENTED:
a. Question banks have been set up at the college level.
b. Tutorials were given by different members of Teaching faculty.
c. Principal Dr. C.N. Rawal & Dr. Mrs. A.S. Sathe participated as members of vigilance
committee of Pune University in Aug.-2004.
d. Co-ordination of practical examinations was successfully completed by Mr. Y. M. Mithare
& Mr. V.B. Gujar.

Ms. Tikute & Ms. Srividya presented Research Papers & participated actively in the State
Level Seminar at Garware Commerce College on 11-12 Jan 2005.
Dr. Pisal participated in a workshop on „The Importance of Indian Entrepreneurship in Global Economy‟ at Sarda College Ahmednagar on 10-01-2005.

Mrs. Dhobale participated in a seminar on „Recent Trends in Banking‟ at Mahatma Phule
College, Pimpri.
Mr. Gujar & Mr. Mithare attended a Refresher Course at Pune University from Jan 24 to Feb.20 2005.
Ms. M.U. Gokhale participated actively in a university level workshop organized by Mamasaheb Mohol College, Pune on “Marketing and SWOT Analysis.”
Ms Tikute and Mr. Shirode attended “Orientation Programme” at Pune University.

The college library provides various facilities to the students as below :

b. A separate reading hall.

d. The college library sought a membership of British Council Library & Jaikar Library,

e. The Library was opened for students till 10 p.m. during the exam period.
The college did not have a separate building for Library unit. But is now totally
independent. So, the functioning of this unit has been more efficient. The college has
bought the reference material for the amount of Rs. 1,26,530/-

Seating arrangement of the administrative staff has been specious and fully independent. Duties
of each individual administrative staff were made more specific. They have been trained in
operating computers. They have separate sets of computers with necessary software. This new
setup gave immediate results as below :

b. Examination work became more accurate, fast and of better quality.
c. Issuing of various certificates and documents to the students became easier & convenient.
d. The faculty is charges along with the Principal Monitored the system.
