GENERAL

1-1. Purpose. This regulation establish." t.hepolicies and procedures far the so.lection, qualifie,,­t.iOll, rating and disl'ating of Anny marine divers.1-2. Applicability. This regulation applies to allArmy military personnel, including members ofthe Active Army, Army X,,!.ional Guard, andAnuy R€'serY6 who are being considered for 1lS­signm~nt to, or who are assigned to the followingduty positions:

a. To a Table of Or~ltllization and Equipment(TOE) or Table of Distribul ion and Allowances(TDA) duty position in MaS OOD or 7242.

Z-L Marine diver ratings. '" Enlisted marinedivers will be awm:ded the' following ratingB:

(1) Scuba diver.(2) Diver seeond cl.....(3) Salvage diver.(4) Diver first class.(5) ~faster diver.

b. CommiBsioned officers who qua.1ify as mllrinedivers will be desi~,"nated as Diving Officers andawarded the following ratings:

(1) Salvage diver.(2) Diver first class.(3) Master diver.

c. A detailed description of each of the lIboycratings is contained in paragraph 2--3.Z-2. Selection criteria. Officer &Ild enlisted per­sonnel who are selected for marine diyer trainingmust:

a. Volunleer for marine diver training.b. Be in grade B-2 to E-5 and have as as mini­

mum 21 months or wore of active duty seryiceremaining after completion of course (enlistedp&rSOnneJ only).

c. Attain a standard score of 100 or higher onAptitude Area GM (enlisted personnel only).

d. Attain a standard sr,Ore of 300 or higher onthe Anny Physical Combat Proficiency Test(TM 21'-200).

(2) Swinuning-220 yards using any stroke.

(l) Havc knowledge of divers' ilInooses, in­cluding oxygen and es.rbon dioxide toxicity, nitro­gen narcosis, decompression siclroess and air em­bolism, and emergency remedial procedures.

(m) Know marine animals and plants andbe able to recognize dangerous or hostile forms.

(n) Understand the use of current and tidetables.

(0) Know underwater repair methods andmethods of salvage, demolition and blllBting.

(p) Demonstrate the back-pre&'lUre arm­lift and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation methods ofmanual artificial respiration.

(g) Be familiar with underwater cameraoperation, map making, and hydrographic survey­ing and charting.

(1") Know how to prepare a baach or riverintelligence report.

(2) Dwer 8econd em8. An individual willnot be awarded a diver second class rating unlesshe has satisfactorily completed a diver second classformal course of instruction at an app!"ved serv­ice diving echool or a diver second clllSS OJT pro­gram."Diver second clllSSmust:

(Ii) Know the nomenclature of divingequipment and function of component parts.

(0) Dress and tend diver expertly.(I) Know standard and emergency signals

employed in diving operations.(g) Know the instructions for maintaining

diving log (DA Form 1262-R) and the entriesrequired (see para 2-12a).

(h) Know the cause, symptoms, treatmentand prevention of air embolism.

(i) Know the dangers of oxygen poisoningduring the administration of oxygen under pre&­sure, its usual symptoms, warnings and treatment.

(j) Know first aid related to the treatmentof common diving injuries and illnesses.

(k) Know the physics of diving.(l) Know the methods and procednree em­

ployed in searching far and recovering materialand objects from the bottom.

(m) Know how to calculate methods of andmaterials required to lift objects from the bottom.

(n) Know how and when to use a recom­pression chamber and how to properly administeroxygen for decompression and treatment purpoees.

(0) Demonstrate practical application ofmarlinspike seamanship to diving operations.

(p) Know the contents and use of the Div­ing M&nual (TM 55-375).

(g) Know approved techniques and proce­dures for aocomplishing sllallow and deep-waterdives using surface-supplied air diving equipment.

(r) Know p.rinciples of rigging, to includeuse, care and selectIOn of ropes, knots and frames.

(8) Know vessel nomenclature and under­water location of parts of Ship's hull to avoidweakening of structure members when cutting orwelding.

(t) Know construction of underwaterframes and methods of constructing piers lllIdwharves.

(It) ~now the use and how to operateu~derwaterJ~ oxyg~n-hydrogencutting, and elec­~. arc :Wel~ equIpment, and other equipmentutilIzed 1D eliVIDg operations.

(,,) Know safety precautions to heexer­cised in use of explosives in underwater operations.

. (w) Know how to calculate and place ex­plOSIVes charges for destrnction of material.

(z) Know the advantages, limitations andsafety precautions of "open-cirrnit aemand"scuba, and be Ruoficient in its use.

(3) Salvage diver. AIL individual will not beawarded a salvage diver rating unless he has satis­factorily oompleted a ,;aJvage diver course of in­struction at an approved sen~ce dh'ing school. Asalvage div.cr must:

(a).Be selected from the most qualifieddivers first class.

(f) Demonstrate knowledge of all Army­procured types of self-contained underwaterbreathing equipment, including their advantagesand limitations.

(g) Know the methods and materials usedto inbeach ships on strand under various condi­tions of beach, sea1Uld water, and to relloat sunkenships.

(h) Demonstrate Imowledge of the typesof compressors ordinarily used in diving opera­tions, including the varioU!l filtering methods andthe D"OO"""ry precautions to observe.

(i) Understand the principles of divingphysics, to include the laws of PI'e88Ul'll8, fluidsaturation, and the general gas law and itsderivatives.

(j) Understand the principles involved inthe computation of various decompression tables.

(t) Be able to supervise the maintenanCe ofall diving equipment.

(It) Be able to prepare written reporte ofdiving operations.

(v) Have comprehensive Imowledge of thescope, content and application of the Diving Man­ual ('I'M 55-375).

b. Officer Per.01l1llJl (di'lJilng oflicM').(1) An officer will not be designated a diving

officer and awarded a marine diver rating unlesshe has satisfactorily completed a marintl salvagediver formal course of instruction at an approveddiving school. In addition to~ing the quali­fications of a marine salvage diver, the diving offi­cer must:

(a) Be able to plan aud supervise aU divingoperations, to include coordinating activities ofdiving crews.

(b) Prepare written reports of divingoperations.

(e) Have comprehensive knowledge of thescope, content and application of the Diving Man­ual (TM 55-375).

(2) Diving officers may advance to a diverfirst class or master diving rating. They must meetthe qualifications for each rating as set forth in

(1) Scuba divers: 130 feet.(2) Divers ser.ond class and salvage divers:

150 feet.(3) Divers first class and master divers:

297 feet.(4) Diving officers: as authorized for their

2-9. Skill redesignation and revocation of diverrating. a. Redesigfliltio1l. The commandants andunit commanders competent to rata marine diversmay redesignats marine diver qualifications whenany of the following conditions exists:

(1) Failure to perfonn periodic qualificationdives and/or scuba swims in accordance with therequirements listed in paragraph 2-4c.

(2) Physical diaqualification, as detenninedby competent medical authority, except thosephysical incapacities rooulting from diving acci­dents as discussed in Part One, Chapter 11,DODPM.

b. Requalificati<m of diver proficie1icy. At thediscretion of the unit commander, any rated diverwho through inactivity or poor performance nolonger meets the qualifications of his previouslyawarded di"cr proficiency may be requalifiedthrough repetition of a formal training programat an appro"ed service diving school or an OJTprogram in his unit.

c. Revocation. The commandants and unit com­manders competent to rate marine divers mayrevoke marine diver ratings when an individua.lrefuses to make a dive or is found guilty of shirk­ing diving <luty.2-10. Award of diver badges. a. Proficie1icy.Diver proficiency is recognized by thc followingbadges (All 672-5-1 and AR 672-5-2) :

(1) Master Di ver Badge.(2) Diver First Class Badge.(3) Salvage Diver Badge.(4) Diver Second Class BMW'-(5) Scuba Diver Badge (to be developed).

b. Eligibility requireme1U8. An individual (offi­cer or enlisted) meeting the qualification require­ments in accordance with this regulation for thevarious diver ratin~ may be awarded the appro­priate diver badge. Once awarded, the diver badgewill be retained unless an individual's rating isrevoked under the provisions of paragraph 2-9cabove and AR 672-5-1.

Additionally, DA Form 20(Enlisted Qualification Record) and DA Forni 66(Officer Qualification Record) will be annotated asprescribed in paragraphs 9-54, AR 660-200 andparagraph 57, All 611-103, to substantiate theaward.2-11. for special pay for diving duty, an individualmust be a rated diver in accordance with this reg­ulation and be assigned:
