1. Congratulations on being accepted to attend the 2019 CTGAdvanced Training Squadron.
During theweek of encampment, youwill be challenged to succeed in capacities you never
thought you could reach. You are one of very few who will have completed the Advanced
TrainingSquadron.
2. Report toCampSanLuisObispobetween1330and1530onWednesday, July3rd.Please
arrivethroughtheMainGate(AlongSonomaAve)andreporttoBuilding824.ArriveinAirmen
Battle Uniform or Battle Dress Uniform (ABU or BDU). Lunch will not be served; plan
accordingly. Pickup can be arranged from the San LuisObispo train station and the San Luis
ObispoCountyRegionalAirport (SBP). Ifyouneedpickupfromthose locations,pleasefillout
theenclosedTransportationSurveyCardandemail itaspertheinstructionsatthebottomof
thesurvey.TransportationtoandfromSLOneedstobearrangedthroughpersonalmeans.
3. Attached is a mandatory equipment list for encampment. One item that is not on the
equipment list that may be helpful for students at ATS is a laptop. This is optional but
recommended.Contraband itemswillbeconfiscatedat in-processing.Uniformandgrooming
standardswillbeupheldinaccordancetoCAPM39-1fortheentireweekandtherewillbeno
opportunitytoaddresstheseissuesafterarrival;planaccordingly.

yourparentsisattachedcontainingimportantinformation;pleaseensurethattheyreceiveit.
5. Again,Iwouldliketocommendyouonacceptingthechallengesthatwillbesetbefore
youduringencampment.AswithallthingsinCivilAirPatrol,youwillgetoutofencampment
whatyouputintoit.Theexperienceyouhaveatencampment,shouldyoutakeitseriously,will
notonlysetyouupforsuccessinCAP,butalsofortherestofyourlife.

IamwritingthispersonalmessagetoeachofyoutomakesureyouareinformedabouttheresponsibilitiesrequiredofeachcadetstudentwhileattendingencampmentatCampSanLuisObispo.Someinformationmaybeduplicatedfromotherlettersyoureceive;however,becauseoftheimportanceforyoutobeinformedandcheckwitheachcadettomakesurehe/sheknowswhattodoatencampment.Oneofthegoalsforeachoftheencampmentstaffisforeverycadettolearnself-careandindependence.
MEDICATIONS:EachcadetMUSTberesponsiblefortakinghis/herownmedications.This
meansifacadetistakingprescriptionmedication(s),he/sheMUSTbringhis/herownmedicationintheoriginallylabeledbottlesinanadequatesupplyfortheentireencampment,ANDmustself-administerthemedication.NeithertheHealthServicesstaffnoranyotherstaffmembermayadministeranycadet’smedication.AnadultTrainingOfficermayremindacadettotakemedications,ifnecessary;however,thecadetisrequiredtotakethemedicationonhis/herown!Ifacadetcannotdothis,pleasedonotsendhim/hertoencampment.Encampmentisaphysicallyrigorousactivitythatcomeswithbumps,bruises,andmuscleaches.Itisrecommendedeachcadetbringanover-the-counter(OTC)mildpainrelieversuchasAleveorIbuprofentoself-administeratencampmentwithyourwrittenpermissionforuseatencampment.PleaseteacheachcadetwhentotaketheOTCmedicationandwhatthedosageisforanyparticularailment.TheOTCmedicationMUSTbeintheoriginallylabeledcontainer.Ifanymedicationisbroughttoencampmentwithouttheoriginallabel(s),themedicationwillbeconfiscated!
Additionally,ALLmedication(prescriptionandOTC)mustbepackedinaseparate,clearplastic
bag(Ziploc)thatcanbeeasilyremovedfromtherestofthecadet’sluggage.WhenthecadetarrivesforIn-Processing,he/shewillbeaskedtoremoveallmedicationsfromtherestofhis/herluggagesothattheMedicalstaffcancheckthemedications.
ALLERGIES:Ifanycadethasseasonalallergies,he/shewillberesponsibleformonitoringthe
allergies.Eachcadetmustbringpersonalallergymedication(s)andself-administerthemedication.Ifaninhalerisused,thecadetmustbringenoughinhalerstolasttheentireencampment.TheHealthServicesstaffdoesnotsupplyinhalers.Theinhalermaybecarriedinthecadet’spocketforpersonaluseasnecessary.Eachcadetmusthaveyourwrittenpermissiontousethemedication.Ifacadethas
foodallergies,he/shewillberesponsiblefornoteatingthefoodswhichcauseallergies.Thefoodservicestaffwillworktoassistwithanymedically/religiouslynecessarydiets.Thesespecialconsiderationsshouldbelistedonthecadet’sforms.Ifacadethasanallergytobeestingsorotherinsectbites,he/shemustbringanynecessarymedicationandself-administerthemedication.IfanEpi-penisrequired,youmustsupplytheEpi-pensandthecadetmustself-administerit.PleasemakesurethosecadetsrequiringEpi-pensbringEpi-penswithhim/herandwrittenpermissionforuse.TheHealthServicesstaffwillnotsupplyEpi-pens!IfacadetisunabletoadministertheEpi-peninanemergency,lifethreateningsituation,anadultstaffmember,preferablyamemberoftheHealthServicesteam,mayassistwiththeadministration.
FOOTISSUES:Pleasecheckeachcadet'sfeetwellbeforeencampment!Thismeansforeach
parent/guardiantopersonallycheckcadet’sfeet,especiallythetoenails,priortoattendingencampment.Donotsendanycadettoencampmentwithingrowntoenails.Ifyoufindaningrowntoenail,pleasehaveitcaredforpriortocomingtoencampment,evenifitisthedaybeforeencampmentstarts.Inaddition,pleasemakesureeachcadet’sbootsandshoesarewellbrokenintopreventblisters.Blisterscanbequitedebilitatingandmaypreventacadetfromparticipatinginmost/manyactivities.Makesureeachcadetistaughttowearover-the-bootsockswithbootsandsockswithathleticshoes!Ifblistersbecomesobadthatacadetcannotparticipateinmostactivities,he/shemayneedtobesenthome.Itisvitalthateachcadetbringssix(6)pairsofsockstoencampment(ifnotmore!)sothathe/shehasacleanpairofsocksforeverydayoftheevent.Pleaseensurethateachcadetbringstherequirednumberofeveryitemontheequipmentlist!
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!” These issues are vital to having a safe,injury,andillnessfreeencampment.TheHealthServicesstaffdoesnotwanttoseeanycadet.Ifwedon’t see him/her, it means all is well! Our goal is for the Health Services staff to not have anybusiness. If thishappens, itmeans thatyouasparents/guardianshavepreparedcadetsproperly forencampment,andthecadetistakingresponsibilityforhim/herself.EachcadetMUSTbringacopyofhis/her insurance cards. If a doctor visit and/or medications are required, you will be charged theamount for the copay after the event. DearParentsofEncampmentStudent
Thislettercontainsimportantinformationaboutyourcadet’sattendanceatencampment.ItisimportantthatyourchildcomespreparedforthisactivityandIhaveoutlinedseveralareasthatneedyourattention.
MATURITY AND SELF-CONFIDENCE: Encampment is a rigorous and challenging program.Althoughwe are not active dutymilitary,we follow amodified Air Force basic training typeenvironment. Cadets learn the basics of military life. The long, active days are filled withphysically andmentally challengingactivities. Theseactivities include teambuilding,personaldiscipline, and time management exercises. In the past, we have found that some youngercadetsarenotreadyforthistypeoftrainingactivity. Iwouldaskthatyouandyourchildtalkabout encampment. It is important that you both understand that thiswill be a demandingprogram.Tobeproactiveifyourcadetwillbetwelveyearsoldatencampmentyoucanexpectan email from the Commandant of Cadets (Major Christa Cabrera) to discuss some of thesechallengeswithyouandyourcadet;thegoalisnottodissuadeyourcadetfromattendingbutrathertoensuretheyarepoisedtosucceed.
MEDICAL:Wemust know if your cadet is taking any medication. Any medically and/orreligiouslynecessarydietary concernsor restrictions shouldhavebeennotedon themedicalformswhenregistering.Iftheywerenot,pleaseemailtheAdministrationOfficer(MajorPaulaUrbom-Shope)[email protected] thatour foodservices teamcanmake
thenecessaryaccommodations. Pleasehaveyourcadetbringtheirmedications ina1gallonziplocbagtoallowforquickevaluation.
Marching plays a large role in the encampment training, it isvitally important that yourcadet’sshoesandbootsbeproperlybrokenin.Cadetswillbewearingtheirbootsforextensiveperiods each day. New boots or shoes will almost certainly cause painful blisters and mayincapacitatethecadet.Ifacadetbecomesincapacitatedduetoblistersandisunabletomarchwith the flight,he/shemaynotbeable tocomplete theencampmentandcanbesenthomewithout credit. Please do not send your cadet to encampment with brand new shoes andboots.
CAP regulations forbid CAP personnel from administeringmedications. Cadets attendingencampmentwho are onmedicationmust be able toself-medicateandmaintain custody oftheir medicine.Medicationmust be in the original container with the pharmacy labelcontainingthecadet'snameanddirections.TrainingOfficers(seniormembersupervisors)willremind cadets when they need to take medication and will observe themself-administer.Pleasemakeacopyofyourcadet’smedicalinsurancecardandanyspecialinstructions.Ifyourcadetisnotinsured,pleasebepreparedtopayfornecessaryemergencymedicalordentalcarethatmightoccurduringencampment.TherearenomedicalcarefacilitieslocatedonCampSanLuisObispo.Cadetsrequiringmedicalcarewillbetakentothelocalemergencyroomorurgentcarecenter.
Pleasedonotsendyourcadettoencampmentiftheyhaveanactivecoldorflu.AlsomakenoteofanyNEWmedicalconditionthatwasnotcoveredontheapplication.
EMERGENCIES: Oftenacadetattendsencampmentwhile theparentsareonvacation. Inthepastwehavehadgreatdifficultyreachingvacationingparentsifacadetbecomesill.Pleaseensurethatthere isaresponsibleadultthatwecanreachintheeventofanemergency,andthat the Form 31 you have submitted contains the phone numbers and address for theresponsibleadult.
Ifyouneedtocontactyourcadetduringtheweekintheeventofanemergencypleasecall805-215-5629toreachaseniormemberrepresentativeontheencampmentstaffwhowilltakeyourmessage and respond accordingly. This numberwill only be active immediately beforeandduringencampment(03–13July).
There are nopublic telephones at Camp San LuisObispo and cell phones are turnedoff,turned in and stored in a secure location for the duration of encampment. Please do notencourage your cadet to call home throughout the week, doing so takes away from theirtrainingexperienceandmaynotbeabletobeaccommodated.Iftravelingwithothers,cadetsmaycallhomeifyourequestthemtodosouponarrivalatencampmentbeforetheirphoneisturnedin.
UPDATES & SOCIAL MEDIA: Our public affairs team is already doing a great job inhighlightingencampmentonour socialmedia channels. Theywill continue topost regularlyleading up to encampment and will be posting updates throughout the day with dailysummaries during the encampment week itself. MISCELLANEOUS: Please ensure that you have completed the Camp San Luis ObispoLiability Waiver & DD1381 (with all required signatures) and uploaded it upon registration,otherwiseemailittoMajorPaulaShope([email protected]).
Eachyearcadetsmisplacetheiruniforms,luggage,andotherpersonalitems.Pleaseensurethatyourcadethasmarkedeverypartoftheirgearwiththeirlastname(includingunderwear,etc).Wearenotresponsibleforanythingleftbehindattheendofencampment.Pleaselookattheenclosedequipment list toensure thatyourcadethas thenecessary items. If yourcadetdoesnothavethequantitiesofuniformsoutlinedonthelist,youmaywanttoaskanotherCAPmembertoborrowuniformitems.
Eachyear,transportationtoandfromencampmentposesachallenge.Pleasecontactyourcadet’sSquadronCommanderandinquireifagrouptransportationplanisintheworks.PleasehelpyourcadetfillouttheenclosedTransportationSurveyCardandemailitasperinstructionsatthebottomofthesurvey.Pleaseknowthatweareunabletoaccommodateyourcadetpriorto1300on06July.Additionally,sinceCampSanLuisObispoisamilitaryinstallation,therearerequirementsforoperatingavehicleonbase.
Inpreviousyears,haircutshavecausedsomemisunderstandings.CAPistheUSAFAuxiliaryandmembers inuniformmustmeetthegroomingstandardsasoutlinedinCAPManual39-1,Chapter3andAttachment3. Yourcadetshouldhaveacopyofthismanual,or it isavailableonline at: http://capmembers.com/media/cms/M391_E6F33EAAEC28A.pdf. Cadets failing tomeetgroomingstandardswillbesenthome.
Donotallowyourcadettobringalargesumofmoneyorexpensiveelectronics.Therewillbenoopportunitytospendthemoneyorusetheelectronics.
FINANCE AND REFUNDS: All refunds must be requested in writing (email preferred) toMajor Paula Shope, the Encampment Finance Office ([email protected]).Refunds are available for cadets who withdraw their application from Encampment beforecertain deadlines. Requests before 15 June 2019 are subject to a full refund. Partial (half)refundsareavailableforrequestsbetween16Juneand30June2019asitemswillalreadybepurchased on their behalf. Withdrawals on the day of Encampment are not eligible for arefund. ALL refundswill beprocessedwithin fourweeks following the endof encampment.Itemsthatneedtobepurchasedonbehalfofthecadetduringtheweek(socks,tennisshoes,etc.)mayneedtobereimbursed.
GRADUATION:Thegraduationparadewillcommenceattheparadegroundsat10:30amonSaturday,13July2019.Pleasearriveat least45minutes inadvancetoaccommodateparkingandseatingforalargecrowd.EachyearfamilymemberswishtoseetheircadetPRIORtothegraduation.Thiscausesproblems forour staff.Cadetsarebusypackingandout-processing. Iwouldaskthatongraduationday,youproceeddirectlytotheassemblyareaandpleasedonotenter theencampmentarea. Pleasebeprepared tobe in the sun for a fewminuteson theparadefield(sunscreen,water,etc.).
