Message from Head of Department

Welcome to the 28th Issue of the bulletin of Department of Mathematical CIIT Lahore Campus. Mathematics is a way of thinking, and a means of understanding our world via the development of mental ability. It is a universal language for the expression of the laws of nature, wheth-er it is in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Engineering or Economics. Thus the Department of Mathematics at COMSATS Institute of Information

Technology (CIIT) Lahore campus provides its services to all other departments both at undergraduate and graduate levels including dual degree program of CIIT and Lancaster University, UK.Beside the fact that number of courses wise we are the biggest service Department. The department offers it own BS-Mathematics, MS-Mathematics and Ph.D. Mathematics programs with diverse research areas of Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Computational Mathematics. Faculty members of the department are committed for quality teaching as well as they are publishing their research articles in International reputed journals.

Since the last volume we have many things to share including faculty achievements, conference visits, weekly seminar series at the department, quality research, Mathematical day. In November 2014, after the visit of PEAS and HEC team they have selected us as a national center of mathemat-ics for training the Pakistani team to participate in the international Mathematical Olympiad. The International Mathematical Olympiad(IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents.

Our mission is to provide mathematical education with the goal of producing XXI century problem solvers, equipped with analytical tools so that our graduates must have a successful career path in academia, education, industry, finance and business. To extend the research culture at the depart-ment, we are planning two workshops and one international conference in 2015. One workshop will be in Pure mathematics while the other will be in applied mathematics.

In the end I am very thankful to the faculty and staff of department of mathematics for their continuous hardworking and support for the progress of the department and CIIT.

2. Another milestone of Mathematics department was the successful thesis defense of our MS students. Eight MS students defended their thesis in May 2014. The external examiners belonged to the well reputed professors of the respective areas. All the candidates were declared successful. We congratulate students and their supervisors on this achievement.

In Pakistan, selection for the IMO participants is taken by high school stu-dents which is organized by the Higher Education Commission of Paki-stan. About fifty students out of 4000 are selected which are called by the host Institute and are taught at the institute for a week or two and are then tested at the last two days of the camp.

This process, involving the top 50, is known as First Camp. Based on the performance in the test, about 20 students are further selected for the Second Camp, and the rest are dropped. In the last camp only six students are selected who are then sent to hosting country for competition by HEC.

1. The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Ro-mania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents. The IMO Advisory Board ensures that the competition takes place each year and that each host country observes the regulations and traditions of the IMO. Till date Pakistani students have won 12 awards mostly Hm and Bronze. Only once Pakistan could score a silver medal in 2012.

In previous years Abdussalam School of Mathematics had the honor to introduce and host the event. 12 different medals were won by Pakistan in this duration including a silver medal in 2012. This year due to endeavors of their Head Dr. Sarfraz Ahmad, Mathematics Department COMSATS Lahore has been given the responsibility to prepare students for IMO. Many congratulations to faculty and Head of Department on this achievement.

Dr. Muhammad Zubair

I was born on October 31, 1986 in Kara-chi, the most popular metropolitan city in Pakistan.I received my early education in Karachi and later moved to Jhelum (Pun-jab). I obtained my M.Sc. in Mathematics in 2008 and my M.Phil.in Mathematics in 2010 with major in applied Mathematics from University of the Punjab, Lahore. My interest in Einstein’s theory of relativity be-gan during M.Phil. research work and I was curious about the history of our cosmos. At that time I mainly focus on the subject of Cosmology. Cosmology, the study of the cosmos, explains the origin and evolution of entire cosmic contents, tries to understand the underlying physical processes and com-prehend the laws of physics assumed to hold throughout the cosmos. Cosmology is ranked among the modern and dynamic physical sciences due to its progress both in theory and observations. I was awarded Research Fellowship from DPCC, University of the Punjab Lahore for my M.Phil.project.During this period I primarily worked on the issue of cosmic expansion and examine the effects of elec-tromagnetic field on the dynamics of the universe. I developed new anisotropic dark energy model and published three research papers in ISI impact factor journals. I con-sider myself as luckiest person to be the stu-dent of Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sharif. He has been a tremendous mentor for me and I feel

extremely privileged to have worked under his supervisions.Subsequently, I continued my studies and started my PhD in the field of general relativity and cosmology in 2011. I availed financial support from Higher Edu-cation Commission, Islamabad through the Indigenous Ph.D. 5000 Fellowship Program Batch-VII.In 2012, I visited National Astro-nomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Science Beijing as invited researcher for three months. I really enjoyed that period of my life and it was an unforgettable tour with a lot of experiences. In my PhD dissertation I have studied some cosmic aspects in modified theories of grav-ity involving curvature matter coupling. I presented the contribution in theoretical cosmology on the basis of observational results. I have explored various issues in the fields of thermodynamics, cosmic evolution in the light of different dark energy models, f(R), f(R,T) and f(R,T,Q) theories of gravity. I have successfully completed my projects in the field of modified theories of gravity and published 20research papers in ISI im-pact factor journals of International repute. I have been awarded the “Research Produc-tivity Award 2013-14” by Pakistan Council for Science and Technology (PCST) in the category “C”.I have attended different work-shops, seminars and conferences and also presented valuable talks. I am also acting as a referee for International journals.

Recently, HEC has granted me the outstand-ing research award in the category of best research paper for the year 2012. The development of cosmology and gravi-tation can be seen as one of the scientific triumphs of the twentieth century. In Pa-kistan, we can also promote this area of research by launching the observational centre with the collaboration of different countries. In such situation it would im-prove the research activities and help to relate the theory with observational results.

I am currently working as an Assistant Pro-fessor in the Department of Mathematics, CIIT. Before that I was lecture for 2 months and Assistant Professor for 3 months at Department of Mathematics, University of Management and Technology, Lahore.

Dr. Abdul Jawad

I was born in district Chakwal, Paki-stan. I got my early education (upto HSSC) from well-known institutes in Chakwal. I have received bachelor de-gree in 2006 from Govt. Islamia College Civil Lines Lahore by selecting Mathe-matics and Physics as major subjects. Continuing this line, I got master de-gree in applied Mathematics from the department of mathematics, Punjab University, Lahore. After completion of master degree, I took admission in M.Phil leading to PhD program in the same department. I remained lucky throughout my university education in the sense that Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sharif has supervised me during M.Phil and PhD programs. Moreover, I have completed my PhD in January 2014. I have got HEC scholarship during my PhD study. My field of research is General Relativity and Cosmology. General Relativity is introduced by Einstein and used as a supporting subject in various fields like Cosmology, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Quantum Physics, etc. The topic of focus is cosmology especially to study the accelerated expansion of the universe which is great achievement of astronomers in this subject since 1998. During my PhD, I have attended as well as presented my research articles

in various national and international conferences which are held in different institutes in Pakistan, such as Depart-ment of Physics, University of Karachi; Department of Physics, University of the Punjab; Centre for Advanced Math-ematics and Physics, NUST, Islamabad; Centre for Advanced Studies in Mathe-matics, LUMS, Lahore. I am also doing research work in collaboration with internationally vigorous research scholars. Upto now, I have made 30 publications which are in the regular journal with good im-pact factor. The overall impact factor of my research publications is 70. Some recent publications on the platform of CIIT Lahore are:• Abdul Jawad and Ujjal Debnath:Title: Correspondence of $f(R,\nabla R)$ Modified Gravity with Scalar Field Models , Journal: Advances in High Energy Physics 2014 (2014)11 (IF=2.624).• Abdul Jawad:Title: Reconstruction of $f(\tilde{R})$ Models Via Well-Known Scale Factors, Journal: Eur. Phys. J. Plus 129(2014)207 (Italy and IF=1.475).• Abdul Jawad:Title: Cosmological Reconstruction of Pilgrim Dark Energy Model in $f(T,T_G)$ Gravity,

Journal: Astrophys. Space Sci. DOI: 10.1007/s10509-014-2191-5 (Nether-lands and IF=2.401).• Abdul Jawad and Asim Majeed:Title: Correspondence of Pilgrim Dark Energy with Scalar Field Models, Journal: Astrophys. Space Sci. DOI: 10.1007/s10509-014-2206-2 (Nether-lands and IF=2.401).

My first big achievement in research field after completion of PhD at CIIT platform is the acceptance of the solo paper in high impact factor European Physical Journal C (IF=5.436) and the title of the paper is “Analysis of Gen-eralized Ghost Pilgrim Dark Energy in Non-flat FRW Universe”.I have also won the Research Produc-tivity Award for the years 2012 (Cat-egory D) and 2013(Category C) from Pakistan Council for Science and Tech-nology. I have remained Lecturer (Nov 2013-Jan 2014) as well as Assistant Professor (Feb-July 2014) in Lahore Leads University, Lahore Pakistan.
