On Jan. 27, North Zulch High School athlete Whitlee Byrd officially signed to play volleyball at Temple College during a ceremony at the NZHS gym. Her signature was for a volleyball scholarship to play on the Lady Leopards team at the Temple school un- der coach Mary Malone. Byrd was in front of Malone, her fellow athletes, students, coaches and administrators during Friday’s signing. She was very thankful toward all who witnessed a very important mo- ment in her athletic career. “I decided not even two days (after) I went to try out at Tem- ple,” Byrd said about when she knew Temple was right for her. “I really, really liked the pro- gram. I can tell they have the winning pride and so they ex- pect to be at nationals this year.” Last week was the culmina- tion of a path in volleyball that began in the fourth grade. With support from coaches and her mother, Stephanie Byrd, who Whitlee says has attended every one of her games, she has con- tinued with the spikes and kills on the court. “It’s been my passion ever since I was little,” Byrd added, “so why not play something that I love and get my school paid for.” During her freshman and sophomore years of high school, Byrd was lending her talents to the Columbus Lady Cardinals. She transferred to North Zulch in 2010 and has been instrumental to two sea- sons of Lady Bulldog volleyball that ended in the playoffs, in- cluding in 2011 when North Zulch reached the UIL Region III championship game. She has also been selected District 22-A’s most valuable player in volleyball for two consecutive years and was chosen to be a member Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class A all-state team following the 2010 season. As college lies ahead, Byrd looks forward to her time at Temple College for more than just playing with the Lady Leopards. With ambitions of one day becoming a doctor, the senior praised Temple’s pre- med program as another reason for why she will attend the ju- nior college. Lady Mustangs clinches playoffs with two victories Madisonville to try for district championship after re-sweep of Westwood, Groesbeck By virtue of how games went down in District 20-3A girls bas- ketball last week, Madisonville has already punched a ticket to the playoffs. The varsity Lady Mustangs started the week in district play Jan. 24 in Palestine taking on Westwood. After a close first quarter, the Lady Panthers were on top of Madisonville by two points. However, the Lady Mus- tangs kept Westwood away from the basket better in the second quarter to take a seven- point lead at halftime. Madis- onville wrapped the evening up in the fourth quarter with a 47- 29 victory. Lisa Nealey led with 22 points and five assists. Alexis Harris’ stats included 9 points and 10 rebounds. Lisa Nealey, Alexis Harris and Lyneque Nealey each grabbed three steals. On Jan. 27, Madisonville was back home hosting Groesbeck. The Lady Goats have been win- less in district play this season, and that trend continued Friday night. The Lady Mustangs quickly jumped out to a 14-point lead after only one quarter and went on to win, 63-31. Lisa Nealey racked up 22 points and eight steals. Trease Tyler scored 14 points. Harris had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Shaffer recorded 10 points. Lisa Nealey contributed five assists. As of last week, Madisonville maintained its hold of first place in the district standings with sev- en wins without any losses. The Lady Mustangs cannot finish any lower than third when the regular season ends, meaning Madisonville will advance into the playoffs no matter what happens with their remaining games. In a battle for second place in the district, Fairfield was tied with Mexia last week. Mustangs not close enough to Panthers, Goats Despite a late rally and a contest that went down to the buzzer, Madisonville’s varsity boys basketball team was un- able to nab any district wins last week. On Jan. 25, the Mustangs took on District 20-3A oppo- nent Westwood in Palestine. The Panthers took an early lead in the opening minutes and ex- tended it to 19 points late in the third quarter. Keelan Jones scored 15 points, followed by Marcus Tyler with 12. Anthony Manns made 11 points and seven re- bounds. Pat Cooper grabbed five rebounds. Madisonville hosted Groes- beck Jan. 30 in a game that started neck-and-neck during the first half of the opening quarter. The Mustangs kept on the scoring attack, but the Goats got ahead by 13 points before the half. Madisonville then started to shut down Groesbeck in the third quarter and tied the game. The lead ex- changed hands throughout the fourth quarter until Groesbeck went up by one point with 25 seconds left. The Mustangs then got the ball back with 17 seconds left and were fouled, giving them two free throw chances to tie or take the lead. However, the throws failed to go through the rim. Madisonville tried a few more shots at the basket, but Groesbeck got the ball with three seconds left and ran down the clock to escape with the vic- tory, 65-64. Brent McCloud’s night in- cluded 14 points. Damien Wha- ley came away with 11 points. Manns and Cooper each had 10 points. Manns added eight re- bounds and six assists.
