Following two signings earli-er in the school year, the futureof another Madison Countyathlete was decided last Fridayin North Zulch.
On Jan. 27, North ZulchHigh School athlete WhitleeByrd officially signed to playvolleyball at Temple Collegeduring a ceremony at theNZHS gym. Her signature wasfor a volleyball scholarship toplay on the Lady Leopardsteam at the Temple school un-der coach Mary Malone.
Byrd was in front of Malone, her fellow athletes, students, coaches and administratorsduring Friday’s signing. She wasvery thankful toward all whowitnessed a very important mo-ment in her athletic career.
“I decided not even two days(after) I went to try out at Tem-ple,” Byrd said about when sheknew Temple was right for her.“I really, really liked the pro-gram. I can tell they have thewinning pride and so they ex-pect to be at nationals thisyear.”
Last week was the culmina-tion of a path in volleyball thatbegan in the fourth grade. Withsupport from coaches and her
mother, Stephanie Byrd, whoWhitlee says has attended everyone of her games, she has con-tinued with the spikes and killson the court.
“It’s been my passion eversince I was little,” Byrd added,“so why not play something that Ilove and get my school paid for.”
During her freshman andsophomore years of highschool, Byrd was lending hertalents to the Columbus LadyCardinals. She transferred toNorth Zulch in 2010 and hasbeen instrumental to two sea-sons of Lady Bulldog volleyballthat ended in the playoffs, in-cluding in 2011 when NorthZulch reached the UIL RegionIII championship game. Shehas also been selected District22-A’s most valuable player involleyball for two consecutiveyears and was chosen to be amember Texas Sports WritersAssociation’s Class A all-stateteam following the 2010 season.
As college lies ahead, Byrdlooks forward to her time atTemple College for more thanjust playing with the LadyLeopards. With ambitions ofone day becoming a doctor, thesenior praised Temple’s pre-med program as another reasonfor why she will attend the ju-nior college.
