PRICEY PACESETTER FOR DUNKIRK? It can be presumed if a horse has the benefit of a$2.6-million pacesetter, that his connections regard himas something special. Pacesetter for Dunkirk? (cont. from p1) Todd Pletcher=s primary concern is GII Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth S. winner Quality Road (ElusiveQuality), a horse with ample speed who could be on ornear soft opening fractions, making things harder forthe confirmed closer Dunkirk. It wouldn=t be the first time Pletcher and Coolmorehave employed a pacemaker in the Florida Derby. Backin 2002, they entered Smooth Jazz, whom MichaelTabor had acquired privately, as a rabbit for stablemateNokoma, who was runner-up in the previous year=s GIIRemsen S. The plan backfired that day, as both horseswere well beaten. Suffice it to say, Dunkirk is not Nokoma, and Pletcheris quietly confident that, in the big gray colt, he has hisbest chance at Kentucky Derby glory yet. AObviously, coming out of the Florida Derby, we=llknow a lot more about where we stand, but at thisstage of the game, we feel like he=s the strongest can-didate we=ve had to date,@ he said. AHe has a tremen-dous amount of ability, and has the pedigree and thestyle for a mile and a quarter.@

For Quiet ‘Road,’ a Question of Distance... Three years ago, Jimmy Jerkens entered the Fountainof Youth S. with a high-strung son of Pulpit named

Corinthian who already hada reputation for being a bitdifficult around the barn.Unfortunately for Jerkens,Corinthian=s morning anticscame out in the afternoon, too, and after crossing theline first in the race, Corin-thian was demoted to thirdfor running erratically in thelane. Perhaps that has made

things that much enjoyable for Jerkens with QualityRoad (Elusive Quality), who has taken nary a stepwrong for the son of Hall of Famer Allen Jerkens. De-scribed as a laid-back, uncomplicated horse by theyounger Jerkens, the Edward P. Evans homebred wonon debut going 6 1/2 furlongs in New York last fall, then ran a good second in a seven-furlong Gulfstreamallowance in January. Quality Road was looking toavenge Corinthian=s demotion in the Fountain of Youthand did just that, registering a breakout victory in theFeb. 28 race, coming from just off hot fractions to wingoing away by over four lengths. He earned a 110 Brisfigure for the effort.

ACorinthian would do anything he could to make ithard on you,@ said Jerkens. AThis guy has been nicefrom the start. He=s been a push-button horse. If youwant him to work slow, he=ll work slow. If you wanthim to work fast, he=ll go fast. That certainly makes it alot easier on a trainer. With Corinthian, every day was abattle.@ While Quality Road answered the talent and classtests in the Fountain of Youth, one question still re-mains: how far does he want to go, and can he suc-cessfully stretch out from the Fountain of Youth=s one-turn mile? AYou never know,@ Jerkens answered yesterday dur-ing a national teleconference. AYou wouldn't think itwould be that big of a difference, only an eighth of amile farther, but it is two turns and, for some reason, some horses just don't seem to handle it the sameway.@ Still, Jerkens believes the same sensible thinking thatmakes the colt a pleasure to deal with in the morningswill help him handle the added ground. (Triple Threats cont.) AIt=s important that they enter the first turn with somecomposure, and not where they=re too rank and throw-ing their heads around and getting alldiscombobulated,@ Jerkens said said. ABut we=ve tried totrain him around two turns a lot and worked himevenly, and he seems to have a real good mind rightnow. I=d be surprised if he didn=t handle it. In the Foun-tain of Youth, we wanted him laying up close. If youlooked at the races that day, everyone who was win-ning was laying up close. But I think if we wanted himto come from the middle of the pack, he could havedone so.@ A new wrinkle was added yesterday when trainerTodd Pletcher announced that he was considering run-ning Europe (Unbridled=s Song) as a rabbit for Dunkirk(Unbridled=s Song), though Jerkens didn=t seem overlyconcerned. AObviously, I=d rather he wasn=t in there, but I don=tthink my horse is the type that sees another horse infront of him and has to go,@ he said. AHe=s fast, but Ithink he=s very rateable.@ -LM

Big Drama in Swale Big Drama (Montbrook), winner of last year=s GIII Delta Jackpot S., will make his sophomore bow inSaturday=s GIII Swale S. at Gulfstream Park. The colt, awinner of five of six starts, worked four furlongs atCalder Monday in :49.20. AHe worked phenomenal, dideverything perfect,@ trainer David Fawkes told DailyRacing Form. AHe=s ready to go on Saturday.@ The fieldfor the Swale is also expected to include This Ones ForPhil (Untuttable). Coming off a fourth-place finish in theGII Fountain of Youth, the Rick Dutrow Jr. traineeworked five furlongs Monday in 1:01. AHe=s always hada messed-up schedule,@ Dutrow told the Form. AHe gota quarter crack after the Fountain of Youth, then aftergoing back to training got hurt doing something in hisstall. I walked him for five days and jogged him anotherweek after that, but he=s a light horse, and coming off amile race he should be fit enough to go seven furlongson Saturday.@

‘Points’ Pointed Toward Blue Grass... Starlight Partners= Take the Points (Even the Score),runner-up to The Pamplemousse (Kafwain) in the GIII Sham S. at Santa Anita Feb. 28, is likely to go nextin the Apr. 11 GI Toyota Blue Grass S. at Keeneland.ARight now, he=s training at Santa Anita and doing well, and we=ll continue on a course that will have him ready, most likely, for the Blue Grass,@ reported trainer ToddPletcher. ABut, if there=s a defection or two in the [Apr. 4] GI Santa Anita Derby, we=ll be in a position tostep in and try that.@ A maiden winner in his routedebut at Belmont last September, Take the Points re-turned from a four-month absence to win a Gulfstreamallowance Jan. 31. He was beaten six lengths by ThePamplemousse in the nine-furlong Sham.

Zensational Returns Thursday Zayat Stables=s Zensational (Unbridled=s Song), animpressive maiden winner, returns to the track in Thurs-day=s second race in Arcadia. The Bob Baffert traineestretches out to a mile in the optional-claiming eventafter zipping six furlongs in 1:08.3 in his Feb. 21 gradu-ation. Also in the five-horse field is Ventana (Toccet),third in last year=s GIII Hollywood Prevue S. The coltwas fourth in the Feb. 16 GII San Vicente S. and iscoming off a third-place finish in a Mar. 11 6 1/2-fur-long optional claimer.

Dogwood Throws Lime Rickey into Wood Mix Dogwood Stable will enter Lime Rickey (Lemon DropKid) in the Apr. 4 GI Wood Memorial at Aqueduct. Thecolt has made all nine of his previous starts on thelawn. With his lone victory coming in an Aqueductspecial weight last November, Lime Rickey is comingoff a runner-up effort in the Mar. 14 GIII Palm Beach S.at Gulfstream. AWe don=t know how he will take to dirtin a race, but now is the time to find out, and the mileand an eighth Wood Memorial is a spot that will testhim pretty keenly,@ explained Dogwood=s Cot Campbell.ALime Rickey is a sold grass specialist, but he has a dirtpedigree and is a game colt--and if he moves up bigtime, he might get to Churchill Downs.@

An Emotional Trip for Zito Assistant... It=s been so long that Tim Poole can=t exactly remem-ber when he began working for trainerNick Zito. AI=ve lost count; maybe 22 or 23years,@ Poole said after Zito=s G1 DubaiWorld Cup hopeful Anak Nakal (VictoryGallop) galloped Tuesday morning. AIknew Nick when he was working forJohnny Campo and I was riding horsesfor my dad, who trained.@ Poole, 57, is Zito=s main assistant, and travels the New York, Kentuckyand Florida racing circuits. While work-ing for Zito, a Hall of Fame trainer andthe conditioner of two Kentucky Derbywinners, Poole has trekked around the U.S. extensively, but never abroad until this trip. For Poole, the Dubai journey was something helooked forward to after a very emotional winter. Herecently lost his wife of 34 years following a long illness.

Zito, who Poole said is like a family member to him, told his assistant to take as much time away from thejob as he needed. But Poole thought work was the bestmedicine for him. In his response,Waldrop outlined action the industry has taken over thepast 10 months to increase racing=s safety and integ-rity. Waldrop listed five improvements: 1) Anabolicsteroids have been effectively banned in racing statesrepresenting 99.96 percent of Thoroughbredpari-mutuel handle; 2) Nearly 80 racetracks are partici-pating in a new national injury reporting system thatwill provide comprehensive data leading to a saferracing environment; 3) National standards have beenadopted with regard to horse shoe and hoof care thatwill lead to fewer equine injuries and greater health andsafety for both horse and rider; 4) More than 55racetracks--representing more than 90 percent of theThoroughbred pari-mutuel handle in the U.S.--as well asowners, breeders, trainers, jockeys, virtually everymajor horsemen's organization, veterinarians and regu-lators, and even fans, have pledged their support of theNTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance; and 5) Through anaccreditation system similar to that utilized in industrieslike healthcare and education, members are institutinguniform policies relating to injury reporting; medication;testing and penalties; safety research; a safer racingenvironment; and aftercare of retired racehorses. FROM THE DESKOF...

Bill OppenheimJUDGMENT DAYS However much a rush the commercial market used tobe in to judge stallions the minute they had runners, thestatistical facts are that it is premature to say anythingtoo dogmatic about a sire until the END of the year hisfirst four-year-olds are racing. In the case of this year=sthird-crop sires, that=s the end of 2009. But one of thetelling components of that third season is the sires havetheir second crops of three-year-olds either on, or noton, the Classic trail. If they haven=t had a serious Clas-sic contender or a good graded winner, at least, in oneof their first two crops, well, the signs are not pointingin the right direction, are they? In the case of this year=s contingent of third-cropsires, it also says something that the three leaders bycumulative (Northern Hemisphere-sired) progeny earn-ings to date are all standing for $30,000 in 2009.These are, in order of their cumulative progeny earn-ings, Airdrie=s duo of Proud Citizen ($5,822,548, ac-cording to figures provided to us by The Jockey Club=sInformation Systems) and Harlan=s Holiday($5,789,525, only $33,000 behind his barnmate), andThree Chimneys= Sky Mesa ($5,356,085). Sky Mesa, who is the number one third-crop sire in 2009($906,299, according to Bloodhorse.com), spotted theother two $900,000-plus head starts in their freshmanyear, 2007, when he ranked 20 on the Freshman Sireth

List, with Harlan=s Holiday second (to Posse), and ProudCitizen third. Sky Mesa rocketed back to lead thesecond-crop sire list, and leads again thus far in 2009. But, even in these recessionary times, $30,000 is nota big stud fee. The market=s judgment on these horsesis that, so far, they are very useful sires (SeptemberBook 1 sires, definitely), but have not yet forced theirway into the very top tier. There is one sire on this list for whom 2009 will tellall: Empire Maker, sixth in cumulative earnings, butsecond to Sky Mesa in 2009, less than $30,000 be-hind. When this sire crop went to stud in 2004, itsthree top prospects were Empire Maker, Mineshaft, andVindication. Mineshaft won four Grade Is and over $2.2million and was named Horse of the Year in 2003, inspite of being injured and retired before the Breeders=Cup. Vindication was the unbeaten champion two-year-old of 2002. I was touting him as a possible secondstring to Seattle Slew=s enduring bow as a sire of sires, potentially his second-best sire son, after A.P. Indy. Fortunately, how quickly we forget. Though he ranksfifth among this group in lifetime progeny earnings($4,565,828), Vindication has been a bitter disappoint-ment (I can say that because he=s dead), as his APEX Runner Index of 0.55 through the end of 2008 illus-trates (1.00 is average, and a viable commercial sireshould at least be in hailing distance of the 1.50 mark).

Mineshaft was himself stones better as a four-year-old than he had been at three, and he does keep tryingto edge his way up the ladder--he=s eighth on the third-crop list so far this year, and his four-year-olds do in-clude Grade II winners Casino Drive and Cool Coal Man.He really does deserve the rest of the year before weshould be prepared to jump one way or the other, butit=s also fair to say the market right now rates him amid-range sire, judged by his 2009 stud fee of$30,000. Empire Maker is the sire from this crop who still couldbe a >breakthrough= top-tier sire. He sired three gradedstakes-winning fillies in his first crop, all of whom havegraded stakes form at four this year. His second cropincludes two Classic-aspirant colts. The first isPioneerof the Nile, who won the GI CashCall Futurity, the GII Robert B. Lewis S. and the GII San Felipe S. inhis last three starts, and is headed for a showdownwith The Pamplemousse, by another third-crop sire,Kafwain, in the Apr. 4 GI Santa Anita Derby. The otheris Imperial Council, a distant second to I Want Revengein the GIII Gotham S., but set to re-oppose in the nine-furlong GI Wood Memorial S., also on Apr. 4. OneClassic placing between the two in the next 45 days orso would make a big difference to Empire Maker=s top-tier aspirations.

(Bill Oppenheim cont. from p6) One thing is for certain: Empire Maker went to studwith all the credentials. Trained by Bobby Frankel forJuddmonte, he went off the 5-2 favorite for the 2003GI Kentucky Derby off a near 10-length win in the GI Florida Derby (Beyer 108), followed by a gritty winover Funny Cide in the mud in the GI Wood Memorial(Beyer 111). He couldn=t get past Funny Cide (a geldingfrom Distorted Humor=s first crop) in Kentucky, butcame back to win the GI Belmont S. (Beyer 111--actu-ally a very high figure for the Belmont--with Funny Cidethird). In his only subsequent start, he was upset at 3-10 by Strong Hope in the GII Jim Dandy S. But heretired with a 4-3-1 record in eight starts, never off theboard and an earner of nearly $2 million. By Unbridled,he was one of four Grade I winners out of the greatToussaud, a Grade I winner herself by El Gran Senorout of Grade II winner Image of Reality, by In Reality. One of his Grade I-winning half-brothers was ChesterHouse, who unexpectedly (and after he=d died) turnedout to be a really good sire. The table is set, so tospeak; everything is in place. Now he just needsPioneerof the Nile to win the GI Santa Anita Derby andImperial Council to upset I Want Revenge in the GIWood. That would set the tongues wagging. Though this sire crop may be short on superstar sires, there are plenty who do look pretty useful. I=ve alreadymentioned the group=s top three by cumulative progenyearnings--Proud Citizen (1.43 APEX A Runner Index),Harlan=s Holiday (2.20), and Sky Mesa (2.01). Fourth-ranked Macho Uno (2.91) had his fourth first-cropgraded stakes winner when Macho Again won the GIINew Orleans H. Vindication is fifth, Empire Maker sixth.Seventh-ranked Van Nistelrooy (1.42) surprisedCoolmore as much as Chester House surprisedJuddmonte, but he looks a very credible sire all thesame. Posse (1.88) is down to ninth, having led the2007 Freshman Sire List, but I would bet on him mak-ing a comeback. They were very fast and precocious, and he=s sure to bounce back when the produce ofbetter mares, starting last year, hit the racetrack. Thesecond 10 includes Repent (2.54); Yankee Gentleman(2.23); Mineshaft (1.83); Whywhywhy (2.38); Kafwain(1.17); and mainly >regional= sires D=wildcat (3.52) andNew York=s Hook and Ladder (3.18). There may or maynot be a superstar among them, but there are nearenough to 15 sires among this group which are siringracehorses--a virtue which may be regaining popularitynow that speculation isn=t such a sure path to financialsuccess. Bill Oppenheim may be contacted [email protected]. Please cc TDN at [email protected].

Still, the two bits of good news were thateven the 38 percent drop is probably stilloutperforming the general economy; and this year’saverage was only about 10 percent below the2006-2007 sale averages. MCHUGH CHALLENGING AI BAN Former SydneyTurf Club Chairman Bruce McHugh plans to mount alegal challenge against the effective ban on artificialinsemination of Thoroughbred horses in Australia, ac-cording to published reports. Thoroughbred BreedersAustralia Chairman Trevor Lobb responded by sayingsimply that the issue was Anot on the agenda,@ andthere was international consensus. McHugh aims toforce the Australian Stud Book (ASB) to accept horsesbred by artificial insemination, saying not to do so wasa restraint of trade. "I've been in racing all my life; I'velooked at this from every possible angle, and the onlything I can see against it is the fact that the majorstuds see an advantage in not introducing it. I wouldn'tbe doing it unless I was confident I could get the resultI require, and I will go down that path until someonecan explain to me in simple terms why it's not good forthe industry,@ McHugh told Sydney Morning Herald.Racing NSW chief executive Peter V'Landys said in thereport: "It would require an Australia-wide decision andextensive consultation with all facets of the racingindustry. But our board will certainly consider the mat-ter, because of the respect for Bruce McHugh. We arevery aware that our breeders are very much against it.There's a lot of support for it, but a lot against, so wehave to balance it to see what's the best for the indus-try as a whole.@

Ominous Sign... Keeper of the ASB Michael Ford warned that, said if alegal challenge to the ban on artificial inseminationoccurred, the Stud Book may have to levy breeders toraise funds for defence. "It would be dangerous forAustralia to go alone and definitely foolish, because anyhorse bred that way wouldn't be accepted, their prog-eny wouldn't be accepted and you wouldn't be able toexport them,@ Ford stated. ASome countries might eventake affront and say we're not even going to let youexport horses to Australia. Internationally, it would bedisastrous.@ Arrowfield chief John Messara restated hisposition, saying that the dominant stallions would Acor-ner the market@ to the detriment of the breed.

WAIKATO STUD REDUCES ‘09 FEES New Zea-land=s Waikato Stud has announced a >market-driven=reduction in 2009 service fees for its stallions. AAcrossthe board, we believe we have been very fair and, inlight of the economic situation, we know it's the rightthing to do," Garry Chittick said. AWe appreciate thefabulous support we receive from breeders and wewant them all to continue to share in the stud's suc-cess. O'Reilly will stand at NZ$50,000 + GST thisyear, and that's exceptional value for a stallion of hisquality and record.@ O=Reilly (NZ) (Last Tycoon {Ire},represented by three Group 1 winners this season, willbe limited to 120 mares this season, with 70 outsidespots available. Waikato=s other stallions are Pins (Aus)(Snippets {Aus}), whose fee was reduced to $40,000from $50,000; Savabeel (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}), reduced to$20,000 from $30,000; Fast >n= Famous (Aus)(Redoute=s Choice {Aus}), down to NZ$10,000 from$15,000; and Scaredee Cat (Aus) (Tale of the Cat),who will be available for $6,500 after being announcedat $8,000. No Excuse Needed (GB) (Machiavellian) willremain at NZ$12,000. ANo Excuse Needed representsgreat value at that fee for what he has achieved in arelatively brief career," Chittick added.

All horses in the TDN are bred in North America,
