Head Pupils Elected On Tuesday, July 2, the new Head Boys and Girls
were announced following an election held on Fri-
day, June 29. On Friday, the candidates (of whom
there were six girls and four boys) addressed the
sixth form in Mrs Jones’ classroom as they tried to
convince both teachers and students to vote for
them. All candidates put forward very valid reasons
as to why they should be elected and it meant that
it was very close once the results had come in. The
emerging winners were Ben Capener as Head Boy,
with Lewis Smith as Deputy and for the girls Rachel
Walters got the position of Head Girl whilst Rebecca
Humphreys is now Deputy. Head Boy Ben Capener
said: “I’m really pleased to have won the position of
Head Boy and look forward to making it a great
year for all our sixth formers.” Deputy Head Girl Re-
becca Humphreys added: “I’m privileged to have
got the position and look forward to contributing to
life at our sixth form”. The winners shall now meet
with the senior members of staff to begin discussing
the future of the sixth form. They will also be meeting
with the prefects of the sixth form to arrange events
and make sure the sixth form has a good and en-
joyable year.

a member of staff will be travelling to Gemau Cym-
ru in South Wales to take part in events. Ffion Butler

Having a ball OUR new Year Sevens enjoyed their first Newtown
High School disco on Wednesday, July 11. On the
evening of their final Induction Day, all were invited
to an exciting, Olympics-themed disco in the school
hall, wearing Olympic colours and dancing the
night away. A Level Business students sold tickets
and supervised the disco. The students had a won-
derful night and are looking forward to many more
over their years with us.

Year 7 induction YEAR six pupils from local primary schools recently
spent three ‘Induction Days’ with their future Learn-
ing Mentors, in preparation for their move up to
High School in September. The new students were
welcomed in an assembly before spending the rest
of their time in timetabled lessons, getting a taste of
High School life. They also received a PSRE induc-
tion from Hope Church, which was enjoyed by all.
We are looking forward to getting to know them all
better when they join us in September.
Chinese Talk IN early July, we welcomed a visitor from 5,000 miles
away to our Modern Foreign Languages depart-
ment. Phoebe, a teacher from Guangzhou in Chi-
na, came to witness Welsh and French lessons in our
school, as well as teaching a lesson to Year 8 and
Year 9 classes herself. As an English teacher in Chi-
na, she knows the challenges of teaching students
a second language, but was extremely impressed
by the students’ enthusiasm for Modern Foreign Lan-
guages, as well as the stimulating lessons and excel-
lent standards of teaching she observed by Miss
Smith and Madame Despres teaching Welsh and
French respectively. The colourful and informative
wall displays that are key features in the MFL class-
rooms particularly caught her eye. She even took
pictures of the bright displays, to show to her col-
leagues back in China, who teach in bare-walled
classrooms. The students enjoyed the opportunity
to meet a teacher from a different country and it
was a very fascinating experience for all involved.
We hope to further build on our links with schools in
China. A Japanese teacher is visiting soon.

WITH Olympic Fever firmly setting in and excitement for
the London games building, a number of lucky pupils and

Funky Fashion! OUR Sixth Form Fashion and Clothing students have been working hard all year to produce their final BTEC
coursework, showcased in their fashion show which took place in assemblies this term. Students Holly Jer-
man, Kerry Roberts, Rebecca Humphreys, India Jones, Eve Woodhouse, Amy Woosnam and Imogen Or-
rells, Year 12, and Will Oxford, Year 13, produced their final designs after months of designing, planning and
making each garment by hand to gain their qualification. The Year 12s were given the briefs of ‘Organic’
and ‘Rebel Without Causes’ to create their pieces, while Year 13 worked on the theme of ‘Tradition vs. Mo-
dernity’. Other students volunteered their time to model the collection in the fashion show, which went
down a storm with the audience. Student India Jones said: “The fashion show was a perfect opportunity
for all the students to finally show off our extremely hard work from this year. The whole process was suc-
cessful but the finish was amazing and we are so grateful to our audience and models.” Rebecca Hum-
phreys added: “I think considering we had limited time to plan the show, we pulled it off to a good stand-
ard, we all enjoyed it and we’ve had some excellent feedback! We’d love to do something like this
again.”
Mini Olympics ON Wednesday, June 27, a number of Sixth Formers
volunteered at the ‘Mini Olympics’ held at Maldwyn
Sports Centre. Students Lewis Smith, Callum Lewis,
India Jones, Eve Woodhouse, Lara Parry-Roberts,
Mark Jones and Leela Davies all gave up their time
to help with the successful event. The day began
with the students, from local primary schools, danc-
ing and parading in the ‘Opening Ceremony’, rep-
resenting various countries. They were then able to
participate in a variety of different Olympic events,
supported by our volunteers. This is an excellent ex-
ample of how Newtown High School pupils get in-
volved in the community.

Celebration of Youth On Friday 27th April, a number of students from
Newtown High School attended the ’Rotary Cele-
bration of Youth Night’ which reflected on the suc-
cesses of the young people within our community
over the last year. Held at Latham Park in Newtown,
the pupils were invited to present their achieve-
ments to the local Rotary club, whilst some were
awarded for their success in the recent Young Rota-
tory Competitions. Before the presentations began
everyone was to treated to a wonderful three
course meal which was prepared by Newtown High
School pupil, and winner of the Regional Rotary
Young Chef Competition, Rayne Harbon (Year 10)
After this, Jack Taylor (Winner of the Rotary Young
Musician Regional award) performed on his guitar
whilst Kate Metcalf (Rotary Young Regional award
runner up) performed on her Violin. Then Newtown
High School’s Interact club (Ben Capener, Rachel
Walters and Adam Halford) gave a presentation
revealing what they had got up to over the last
year. Then special guest, Russell George presented
the awards to the winners, including Naomi Head-
ley who had won in her category of the Rotary
Young Musician regional Competition.
Pupils brave weather Recently a group of year 11 students went out to
brave the British summer by taking a visit to Ynyslas
beach sand dunes. They bravely faced the wind
and rain to complete beach profiles and discover
the plant successions of the beach using quadrats
and identifying booklets. Also as a part of their ex-
perience they used new tools such as ranging poles
and clinometers for the first time. Mrs Jones added
“The trip would have been lovely in the sunshine,
who would have thought that it would be so wet in
June?” However the students were treated for their
efforts with some nice warm chips for the journey
home. Now the year 11 pupils will use the data they
bravely collected to write up their controlled assess-
ments which will contribute to their overall GCSE.
Well done and good luck! Geography students doing some

Technology iOS 6 and Android 4.1, it’s a great time for
smartphones
Apple and Google have gone head to head
again after releasing their respective operating
systems.
Apple announced iOS 6 at WWDC this year
and it is set to blow people away with more Siri
integration, brand new maps, Passbook and
much more.
Google have gone down the responsive ap-
proach and provided us details at their devel-
oper conference, Google IO of Project Butter.
Project Butter was to create buttery smooth
graphics and performance when using Jelly
Bean (4.1). Jelly Bean also brings in new sup-
port for applications from the Google Play
Store along with Google announcing a brand
new tablet, the Nexus 7.

Across Wales Walk On Saturday, June 23, a number of determined sixth
formers and Mrs Francis ventured up to Dolfor to
supply food and drink to the hundreds of walkers
taking part in the Across Wales Walk. The walk is
held annually and is a staggering 42 miles in length.
It is arranged by a number of the local Rotary clubs
who asked for our Interact club to assist in the run-
ning of their 49th walk. So on Friday, June 22, our
sixth form raided Mrs Millss’ kitchen to make sand-
wiches for the event. They managed to make sever-
al hundred sandwiches and were fully prepared for
the next day. Unfortunately the British summer was
to be typically wet on the Saturday as our sixth for-
mers went down to Dolfor to meet the many deter-
mined walkers as they journeyed in the wet weath-
er. Mrs Francis said “It was very wet!” but added
that it was a very enjoyable day and it was a great
success. The Rotary club has rewarded our hard
work with a £200 donation to Newtown High
School’s sixth form which has gone to purchasing
new sofas for the common room, Well done to all
involved!
