Head of Academy Update
Together we empower excellence
MAY 2018 NEWSLETTER ALL SAINTS MARSH C OF E ACADEMY
Dear Parents and Carers, What another fabulous half term we have had! All Saints Marsh has, as always, been super busy with a multitude of events happening! We have had musical theatre lessons, cricket lessons, Premier Sport PE, visits from Lulu the reading dog, coffee mornings, cake sales and of course our ‘posh mufti’ and KS1 Royal Wedding! Of course, in amongst all of this fun the Year 2 and Year 6 children have been working incredibly hard for their end of key stage SATS. It is credit to the children that they have all been absolutely committed to achieving their very best during this period. However, we should remember that it is just their Maths and English skills being tested here - very necessary skills for life, but equally a very narrow focus. They do not assess what makes each child special and unique, nor the plethora of other skills they have developed and honed throughout their time here. They will all leave All Saints Marsh as well-rounded individuals who have made us all proud, regardless of the outcomes of the tests. As we approach the end of the year I am delighted that the weather is finally warming up and the sun is shining (on occasions!) Can you please take note of the weather and ensure that your child is prepared/dressed appropriately for the school day. We have had a number of occasions recently where there have been a large number of children without coats on rainy days. Equally, if the sun is shining, please ensure that your child is suitably equipped with sun cream and a hat! The second half of the Summer term is already looking busy with many exciting events planned. We are looking forward to watching Year 4 and 5 perform at Coombeshead Academy, we have our annual sports day, our whole school trip, Year 6 performance and transition days to name just a few things! It would really help us in the organisation of these trips if you could ensure that you read the newsletters and texts which are sent out in regards to them and ensure that any forms/replies are sent back to the office swiftly. I hope that you all have a wonderful 2 week half term break and fingers crossed for some sun! Kind regards. L Garside Head of Academy

Collective Worship
We have now explored our value of 'service' in
detail and the children are all able to recognise
services in different forms. In family groups, we
discussed the different ways that we can serve
other people in order to help make the world a
better place. We explored ideas related to helping
those in need and offering our time 'with no
strings attached'. Additionally, we mentioned
different ways that others serve us as we agreed
that it is important to be grateful for the things that
others do for us and the different things they might
sacrifice to make us happy. Finally, we concluded
that we will try not to 'judge a book by it's cover'
and that we are all capable of doing anything
when we focus our minds on it.
PE and Sport
The last few weeks have been very busy in the PE department, with the lovely weather enabling us to get out as much as possible. Since Easter, All Saints Marsh have participated in the School Sports Partnership Cross Country Race at Haldon, the Rounders Competition at Forches Cross and the Cyclo Cross Race at Stover!! The Year 3/4's enjoyed a Dartmoor 3 Ball Festival at Newton Abbot College and, despite a cold day, had a wonderful time. Back at school, we have benefited, hugely from Mr Buzza's amazing Cricket lessons and, of course, Premier Sport's curriculum lessons and after school clubs. Mr Buzza is offering KS2 a free Cricket club on Thursdays after school and Mrs Gray has a healthy attendance at her Tennis club. Please speak to the office if your child wishes to join either of these clubs. After Whitsun, we will be very busy with Sports Day, a Fabulous Football Friday and many other sporting Summer activities. Please make sure your child has weather appropriate clothing and water.

Courtenay Class
Courtenay class have been investigating classification through their science work on habitats.
They thought about different questions they could ask about an animal’s characteristics to
identify what species it was, such as ‘does it lay eggs?’, ‘is it cold/warm blooded?’ Working in
groups, they then developed a classification key to group a selection of animals they were
given. There was plenty of scientific thinking and we also learnt some very interesting facts
about the animals from the children.
Templar Class
The Year 6’s have had a busy week with SATs. Each day started with a big breakfast that got everybody energised and ready for the day. They have shown a remarkable level of resilience throughout the week and it was so great to see each and everyone of them persevere each day. We are all very proud of them and we would like to thank them all for trying their best. They have come so far and it is impressive to see how much they have all achieved in their primary school years. We have now officially started reading our play and we cannot wait to start rehearsing. Parts are still in the process of being assigned and the children are excitedly waiting to find out the parts that they will be playing.

Forde Class
This term has already been so busy! We have begun our Topic called ‘Let’s investigate’. We car-
ried out an experiment by planting seeds and observing them grow! We even predicted what might
happen if we put the seeds and soil in a cupboard! After successfully planting our seeds, we
created instructions for Courtney Class to use. This was fun learning!
This term we had an exciting opportunity of showcasing our learning to the rest of the school! We
worked really hard to learn our lines and actions to a story that we created. It was so much fun!
Bradley Class
Bradley class have been very busy finding out more about Kenya. They have found out about the animals that live on the plains of the Masai Mara and written fantastic mystery descriptions. Can you guess what they are? “I’m an ungulate mammal with a distinctive coat and a stripy mane! I have night vision that makes me see in the dark. I have stripy legs and I can confuse my predators. Did you know I can make lots of different noises? My coat is covered in black and white stripes. What am I?”…...

Friendship Express
Update!
A huge thank you to Mrs Chapling who helped the children paint the panels for our
Friendship Express! The children had a fabulous time getting creative and transferring their winning designs onto the wooden panels.
We are really looking forward to the train being a permanent feature in our playground
shortly.
