In this workshop, design a model rocket using straw, clay and paper fins, and test your design using a pneumatic-launching device. Learn how far your rocket can go and how long can it stay airborne. Engineering for Kids provides Academic Enrichment Programs to children aged 4 to 14, with a variety of extraordinary programming. Its mission is to prepare students for the global economy by providing programs focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Its inquiry-based programs are de- signed to provide exciting, hands-on experience with STEM-related projects. Do You Speak Scratch? Learn the language of computer coding. This session will focus on Scratch, a programming language and online community where children can program and share stories, games and animation worldwide. As children create with Scratch, they learn to think creatively, work collaboratively and reason system- atically. Scratch is designed and maintained by the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab. Get Charged With Solar Circuits What’s the best way to soak up some sun? Explore how solar panels can provide solutions for creating natural energy to power the devices we use every day. See solar chargers in action charging smart-phones, tablets and digital cameras using nothing but sunlight! Learn the fundamentals of electricity, includ-ing amps, volts, watts and impedance, and how they relate to creating proper and efficient circuits. Then use what you’ve learned to create schematics of cir-cuits to power specific devices.

Rob Kissner, a Scarsdale native, has been involved in technology for 15 years. His background in media production, managing a historic recording studio on

Long Island, coupled with technology education was the driving force in creating The Digital

Arts Experience. The DAE, which will celebrate its third year, provides kids and teens with afterschool and sum-mer programs in all forms of technology, ranging from computer programming to digital drawing.

Seeing in 3D: Bringing Design to LifeDiscover how 3D printing technology is changing the world! In this workshop, explore the history of 3D printing and learn about the many technologies and processes used to create a three-dimensional object. Then, try your hand at TinkerCad, a powerful modeling program, to experiment in changing basic shapes into a 3D digital design.

SET Game: A Hands-On Cards Workshop (Open to grades 5-8; enrollment limited to 10.)

Come play cards! SET is a very popular card game based on deep mathematical concepts. Learn more about this addictive test of visual perception, where the object is to quickly identify similarities and dif-ferences in a set. Through playing, you’ll solve some interesting combinatorial questions. You may even get to build the magic SET hypercube.

Dr. Tanya Khovanova is lecturer in the Mathematics Department at MIT and head mentor at the Program for Research in Mathematics, Engineering and Science (MIT PRIMES). She earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from Moscow State University in 1988 and her current research interests are combinatorics and recreational mathematics. Dr. Khovanova also coaches mathletes at the Advanced Math & Science Academy in Marlborough, Massachusetts and coordinates math research at MIT’s Research Science Institute (RSI). In addition, she is the creator of the popular Number Gossip site.

SET, Game and Theory(Open to teachers and parents. Enrollment limited to 10.)

SET is a very popular card game based on deep mathematical concepts. Learn more about this ad-dictive test of visual perception, where the object is to quickly identify similarities and differences in a set. As you play, see how SET can be a starting point for teaching modular arithmetic, combinatorics, group theory, linear algebra and other branches of math-ematics.
