A chilly Tuesday morning greeted our members as they assembled at the Orillia Legion for

the first meeting of June. Even with the cool weather, there were many members present.

Linda McNabb from the Orillia Kiwanis Festival was on hand to thank the members of the CSSC who once

again did an excellent job volunteering to help run the Festival, which was very successful. Kiwanis members

are very grateful for our continuing support.

Potpourri: Mike Jones’ “Potpourri” enlightened us on the history of “Cockney Rhyming Slang”. “CRS” is a

humorous slang first used by “Cockneys” in the east end of London and

now understood (?) widely in London and throughout Britain. It was

invented in London in the 1840’s by market traders, costermongers,

(sellers of fruit and vegetables from handcarts), and street hawkers. The

language was used to disguise what was being said from passers-by.

Today’s teens do exactly the same thing on the internet making up

acronyms and obscure words to baffle snooping parents.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES:

Today’s emcee was Pat Verner

who had many good jokes to

keep the membership laughing.

He was accompanied by the

outstanding “MusicMakers’

Band” and the “standing up”

members of our choir who were joined by our members singing

enthusiastically from their seats.

SPEAKER: Bill Zufelt could not get a sitter for his children for today so

he brought them to the meeting. Lucky us! Daughter Chris accompanied

son Kirk, who for the second time spoke to us about his latest “birding”

adventures which wowed our members.

Kirk is a graduate of Hillcrest School, Orillia. He finished

medical school and now is Head of Pediatrics in Sault St.

Marie. His other passion is “birding.” Big time “birding.” His

amazing slide show started with adventures in and around

Alaska and Attu Island, off the Russian coast. Fast forward to

Antarctica and boating adventures with 40 to 50 knot winds

and ice making us shiver. We

were treated to photos of

penguin colonies, elephant

seals, emperor seals,

albatross, numerous sea birds,

flying fish, flying squid and

even snakes. His adventures

took us from Antarctica, to

Amsterdam Island, (SW from

Perth), to remote Islands surrounding New Zealand, Tahiti and the Ascension

Island near the equator.

Chris indicated that she did not long to accompany Kirk on his adventures. John

Smalley thanked Kirk for his outstanding presentation.

There was “Plenty of sunshine coming our way”, as the Champlain Seniors assembled for

their regular Tuesday meeting at the Legion. President Bob Bowles led the toast to the

Queen and Canada to get things started.

Tribute: John Morrison presented his excellent tribute to his good friend Allan Scott, our “Leader of the Band”,

“The MusicMakers.” Allan grew up in a musical family and bought his

first guitar at Orillia’s Hock Shop when he was 12. He later learned to

play piano and keyboard. He joined the Champlain Seniors in 2008,

sponsored by George Smith. Allan served on the CSSC Board and

presented Tributes for Neil Anthony and George Smith as well as

many Pause for Thoughts and Potpourris. He performed as an

opening act for Gordie Tapp at the Orillia Opera House in 2014; the

Ramara Historical Society in 2015 and 2017, two Peter Heslin

specials of Gordon Lightfoot and Paul Anka as well as countless

times at the Orillia Farmers’ Market.

Currently he and The Music Makers continue to bring music and joy

to retirement homes, churches, and other venues, (including the

CSSC). Summing up, John praises Allan as being dependable,

honourable, considerate and loyal and a gentleman in every

sense. It doesn’t get any better than that.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES: Gerry Murfitt was today’s

emcee. He presented us with many words and sayings

that were commonly used in the past which are no

longer in our vocabulary or have different meanings

today. The band was in fine form and the choir was

mostly in tune, as our membership happily sang along

with today’s selection of tunes from our new song

books.

SPEAKER: Our guest speaker today was Doctor Linda Rodenburg, an

English Professor and Humanities 101 Coordinator of Interdisciplinary

Studies/English Departments at Lakehead University, Orillia. She was

introduced and thanked by David Godward, one of our fine coordinators of

our guest speakers. Linda spoke of community engagement and lifelong

learning for Lakehead learners in Simcoe County. Humanities 101 and the

Ontario Master Naturalist program both enable this process. Lifelong

learning is essential! She walked us through an exercise to identify an

object in a picture and gave us several wooden objects that she had

brought to the meeting. This led to interesting guesses and conclusions.

What is the Ontario Master Naturalist Program? This certificate

program is now in its fourth year in Orillia and its second year in Thunder

Bay. Lakehead also offers fall and winter sessions, and this year we will

be learning about mushrooms, lichen, mosses, and bird migration.

Participants come from all walks of life. They have included teachers,

outdoor educators, environmental consultants, and many seniors with a

real passion for nature. Master Naturalist Bob Bowles coordinates this

program, and he teaches with experts from across the province who

specialize in specific topic areas. Linda finished with an interesting Q and

A session. Dave then presented her with her CSSC Speaker’s gift.

The good weather keeps rolling in and many CSSC

members donned their shorts for the first time this

morning to celebrate. President Bob Bowles and company toasted the

Queen and Canada and heartily sang O Canada, accompanied by the

MusicMakers Band.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES: Emcee Chuck Penny had a plethora of

great jokes and the band had selected great songs,

(including Paul Anka’s “Diana”}, which our

membership and our massive choir belted out and

rocked the walls of Branch 34 of the Legion.

SPEAKER: We were honoured to have our current

CEO of Orillia’s Soldier’s Memorial Hospital, Pat

Campbell, as our guest speaker this morning. Pat

will be leaving “Soldiers” in July. Carmine Stumpo,

from Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto, (formerly

Toronto East

General Hospital),

will take over as

OSMH’s president

and CEO. Pat

outlined the ambitious changes that are in the planning stages for Soldier’s

Memorial Hospital. It appears that over time, the entire hospital is going to be

replaced! One member was very interested in the project and brought

forward the issue of hospital parking. He even suggested a possible parking

site. Pat’s presentation was very interesting and was warmly received by our

members. Dave Godward thanked Pat for her informative presentation and

then presented her with her CSSC speaker’s gift.

THE TRIP TO STRATFORD TO SEE SHAKESPEARE’S TEMPEST

Four outstanding

features of the tour were:

1. The weather and the scenic

cross country route selected by the

driver. The sunshine, the green,

growing fields and broad open

landscape made for a calming, gentle

ride both there and back.

2. Anna Mae’s scrumptious and

abundant fresh from the farm meal.

The eating space was crowded but so

were the platters of food. We did say

“no thanks” to the repeated offer to

bring more food.

3. The Stage production and visual

effects were outstanding. It was a feast for the eyes. Unfortunately, however, I and many like me heard very

little of what was said.

4. The price of $130.00 per person. This was the lowest paid by members for outings to Stratford. All costs

were covered and the bus driver was given a tip. This was a great value. Fayne Bullen

The last Tuesday of June was the fourth perfect summer meeting day in a row. Lucky us.

President, Bob Bowles, welcomed the large turnout of members and led them as they sang

our national anthem and raised a glass to toast the Queen and Canada.

Potpourri: Neil Anthony presented his interesting “Potpourri” which dealt with his Bermuda homeland during

World War II. Bermuda was a strategic location for the military during the conflict. It was a vital military post for

allied army, navy and air forces, particularly in disposing of enemy submarines.

Neil has fond memories of his time there; skin and scuba diving in the beautiful clear water where you could

see the bottom at a depth of 200 feet.

Telecare thanked our members for helping to raise $2,000 tagging to support their “help” phone lines.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES: Bob Brassington was our Emcee this morning and had lots for good jokes for

Bob Brassington as MC with the Choir and the MusicMakers

Tour Group, 32 CSSC Members and Friends

our members. Bob also was a ground breaker for Emcees as he attempted to use his I-Phone to retrieve some

material. Unfortunately, we can all relate to the “revenge of the devices.” Awesome band and a double quartet

choir!!! Happy 103rd Birthday to drummer/tap dancer/good sport, Les Girard!

SPEAKER: My Life So Far. Olaf Stosch presented his “Life So Far” as a new member. He was born in Berlin

in 1932 and was disappointed that Germany was knocked out of the Football World Cup on Wednesday. He

was 6 years old when World War II started in 1939 and most young boys were separated from their families for

years to come. Luckily, he was placed with a farmer’s family who had horses. He got to love horses and

learned how to drive them with horse and wagon. He walked 5 km to school and

has uncomfortable memories of the war years.

After the war ended in 1945, he went back to school and he graduated in 1947.

His Mom enrolled him as a carpenter’s apprentice and after three years he

became a “Journeyman”. In 1952 he joined the Berlin Police Force. He met his

wife Eva and they were married in June 1957. Soon after they left for Canada and

for a better life. They moved to Toronto and he found a job for $1.25 an hour. He

enrolled in a course to learn programming and data processing.

Olaf landed a job with Massey-Ferguson then Simpson Sears with whom he

stayed until 1990. After he retired he volunteered in Uxbridge to help children and

adults with various mental and/or physical problems.

He still loves horses. He learned English Riding and even won some competitions

but he gave it up last year.

He and Eva have enjoyed travelling to more than sixty countries and are still

counting. Bob Bowles presented Olaf with his permanent CSSC membership

badge and welcomed him aboard.
