Show & Tell HighlightWhat I liked about this piece:* It is very well made with attention to detail* It is both functional and beautiful* Spindle turning is something we don't hear a lot aboutbut it is where wood turning started.

Design Opportunities / Saved pieces

I sometimes struggle with pieces that are not working out as intended (I assume everyone does this). We call it a “design opportunity” and sometimes it is just that and results in a better piece than whatwas planned. Other times it results in time spent trying to save a piece, when that time would be betterspent starting over. When the “design opportunity” first happens, it can be difficult to decide whether tokeep working on the piece or convert it to smoke. Most of the time; I am too attached to burn itimmediately so it sits around for a while (until I try again or clean up the shop). I would be interested inhearing from other members on how they decide when to save and when to burn.

MESQUITE WOOD NEWS-------OK-- to let everyone know about the Mesquite wood. Wayne, Keith, Richard and I went to Victoria, Texas onSaturday, Nov. 2- to pick up a trailer load of Mesquite wood. Wayne has a 20- foot trailer and it’s loaded fromfront to back with a lot of Mesquite wood. We did a turnaround trip down to Victoria and back. It was a longenjoyable day but we all decided to get back to East Texas that evening. I have the list with people’s nameswho have already signed up to purchase this wood; anyone else who wants to be added can do so Saturdayat the meeting. We will take the total number of people who sign up and divide that up into the expenses ofgoing to get this wood. There is a great variety of wood to choose from. I’m sure there will be something foreveryone. So please come prepared to pay for and pickup the wood you choose. We should be able to leteverybody select this in the parking lot after the meeting is over. I would appreciate everyone’s help andcooperation in making this go as smoothly as possible.

I look forward to seeing you all at the meeting Saturday. Be safe and let the chips fly.

Danny

Member Spotlight: John Hawkins, Interview by J.J. Altier

This month our highlighted member is John Hawkins, 84 years of age, living in the country not too far fromLarue. When I asked John for directions to his place, he could have been a little more honest with me and tellme “you can’t get here from there”. Holy moly! He told me to take this county road and make a left at this otherroad and another left on that road over there and two more left turns somewhere or other. Then at the twomailboxes make a right on the dirt driveway. Cross a creek and the driveway ends up at his place. No, not therewas not one creek but three, and no bridges. The lane was 8 tenths mile long. Talk about isolated! The trip wasworth it to see John’s turnings, and his beautiful log cabin.

John grew up in Northern Minnesota, and had a farm bred childhood. As a teenager he and his father started arepair shop, repairing automobiles and tractors and such. John joined the Air Force in 1951, where after bootcamp he was whisked off to Viet Nam. During his two tours there he repaired jet engines. John had his fill of theAir Force and retired 22 after years. After retirement John went to work in Dallas for a company that repairedwhat else, JET ENGINES. Shortly after that he went to work for the Postal Service. I guess he didn’t like that toowell because he quit to take a job as an inspector for a machine shop. I guess this is where he got his ability towork in very precise measurements.

It was while he was working in the Postal Service that he met his wife, partner and friend of 31 years, Thada.Funny thing was, he hadn’t planned on going to square dance lessons that night. He was doing a friend a favorby going. When introduced to Thada he knew this was someone special. They bought the 60 acres, his currenthome in 1996. Sadly, Thada passed in April of 2012. She was his beloved wife, partner who is missed daily. Itwas several days later when John had his first heart attack. Watching John talk about her makes this writerbelieve the heart attack was from heart break. Thanksgiving the same year John suffered his second heartattack.

John gave me the tour of his shop and his gallery of his turnings. Because of his recent health issues Johndoesn’t turn as much as he used to. His shop is 800 sqft, and very neat and organized. What’s up with that? Hesports such stationary tools as Rikon, Fox, Grizzley, and Jet all good quality tools. Course they would have tobe, to produce such turnings as his. John started turning after he joined our club in 2005 having seen anewspaper article featuring the club. His turnings are mainly vessels of the segmented nature. That is where hispreciseness comes into play.

I asked John to give me some pointers for making a segmented vessel. John said “take the diameter of thepiece you want and multiply it by” 3.1287935423 or something like that. He started with the math formula and Ithink I passed out, because the last thing I remember is him saying “multiply the diameter by”…… I don’tremember much after that. His gallery is in his home and is full of his wonderful segmented pieces. I just wishJohn would share some of those pieces at Show and Tell.

After the interview I had John draw me a map to get back to civilization. Holy cow! where did all that precisenessgo? He had me going this way and that, when you get to Houston you know you made a wrong turn somewhere.Guess what? GPS doesn’t even recognize that area as having been discovered yet. Thank you John, forallowing me to visit with you and have some fun in writing this article, which was approved by John, The BetterHomes and Garden Magazine and Betty Crocker.
