Prayer of Farmers

Heavenly Father, King of the Universe, you are the sole source of abundance. With your help I plant my crops and by your power they give forth a harvest.

Grant me the grace always to work with all my strength and ingenuity in cultiva-tion the soil so that it will bring forth fruits for my benefits and the benefit of all who will use them. Make me ever cognizant that without my part in the work of harnessing the goods of the earth, these particular goods would be lacking to my

brothers and sisters in this world.

Dear Friends,

Rejection in some form or another is something we’ve all experienced and is most likely something we all fear. Whether we are preparing for a job interview, practicing for an audition, or getting the courage to ask someone on a date, we know that the act of “putting ourselves out there” is exceptionally risky and vulnerable business. But we know that if we don’t take chances, we will live a life constrained by fear and haunted by “what ifs.”

Brothers and sisters, in the Bread of Life discourse that we’ve heard these last few weeks, Jesus puts himself out there and risks everything in hopes that we will accept His invitation to Eucharistic intimacy. In last week’s Gospel, Jesus definitively teaches that he wants us to con-sume his Body and Blood in the Eucharist. His words unveil how much He desires intimacy with each one of us. He doesn’t simply want to be a teacher, role model or leader that we observe from afar. He desires communion with us. You see, love always tends towards a union with the object beloved. And Jesus, the ultimate lover, longs to be united with us, not only in heaven but also here below.

In today’s Gospel, many of Jesus’ followers will reject His proposal and go back to their former way of life. Shouldn’t Jesus try to tone down his teaching so that the crowds stay? Why risk losing His popularity on such a difficult teaching?

But Jesus does not back down on His teaching because He will not settle for a lesser love. He desires to give a total gift of himself. Jesus makes himself vulnerable and risks rejection because He will not live a life haunted by “what ifs.” He longs for communion with YOU. At every Mass, He makes himself vulnerable and available in a little host with the hopes that YOU will be there to be one with Him.

Brothers and sisters, what is your response to Jesus’ invitation to love? The choice to stay or leave is up to you, too. This week, let’s pray for a deeper and more heartfelt response to the beautiful gift of the Eucharist.

~ Kristin Molitor
