Hello once again

On Tuesday May 10th Jean Arnold, Anne Richardson and I had the pleasure of attending a luncheon at the Hotel Grand Chancellor in Hobart. Approximately 450 people attended this function to see 84 women inducted into the inaugural TASMANIAN HONOUR ROLL OF WOMEN. The Minister For Women Tasmania Paula Wreidt hosted the day and Jo Cornish from Southern Cross Television was compere. What is the Tasmanian Honour Roll Of Women? “The Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women was established in 2005 to honour Tasma-nian women who have made an out-standing contribution to the State. It serves to ensure that these achievements are given full recognition and not be forgotten in the passage of time.

We pay our respects to those members who appear on the Honour Roll.

May they inspire and motivate future generations of young women to make a difference in their own way.” This quote was taken from the Special Edition of Women Tasmania News magazine The inductees have contributed to our home State in all areas of life from Medicine, Community and Environment, Arts, Services to Government, Botany, Aboriginal Affairs, Literature, Land Care, Education and many other ways. Inductees include Dame Enid Lyons, Dr Geraldine Archer, Ailsa Bond, Mollie Campbell-Smith, Nan Chauncey, Wini-fred Curtis, Emily Dobson, Marjorie Bligh, Dorothy Edwards, Eliza Forlong, Sandra Gillanders, Elizabeth Jack, Margaret McIntyre, Kathleen Venn and of course Lilydale’s own Bush Nurse, Sister Mary Walsh to name just a few

The Bush Nursing scheme was set up in Tasmania to serve the many Soldier Settlements which became established throughout the State after the end of the First World War and Lilydale’s first Bush Nurse came in 1923 and from then till 1940 a succession of nurses came and went, most married and had families of their own.

Sister Walsh arrived here in 1940 and stayed till her retirement in 1974. When she first arrived she was billeted with Anne Richardson’s family on the Main Rd and worked from a garage on the property without power or lights. The Community saw the need for Sister Walsh to have her own place and after a lot of planning and fundraising a cottage was eventually built and given to her in 1948. This building now houses the Community Health Centre and the Mary Walsh Centre

Sister Walsh served her community not only as a Nurse (her patients often found her as good as many doctors at looking after their medical needs) she joined in and became involved with all areas of life in her adopted Community and thoroughly deserves the recognition of being placed on the inaugural Tasmanian Honour Roll Of Women

A commemorative folder containing all the biographies of the women on the Honour Roll can be obtained from Women Tasmania, Public Buildings, 53 St John St Launceston, phone 6336 2347 for a price of $30. Alternatively biographies can be viewed on the Women Tasmania website at :

Letters to the Editor I read with some amusement, the writings at a “Grandfather over 60years” and thought I would share a little of my childhood memories.

We lived in a very isolated community on the West Coast, maybe a dozen families in all – no road, just a narrow gauge railway to get to school and town, AND no shops either!

We had a hall, where if we followed “The Rules”, we could play when the weather was wet (which was most of the time)! The hall was also used for badminton, popular with adults and children alike, and dances – Nell Eaves Orchestra used to travel out with the guests from town. Extra transport was provided, usually Romeo, a little engine which pulled a carriage which had wooden bench seats and sliding doors with windows.

Returning from school one afternoon, Romeo became derailed, and the carriage with us in it tipped precariously over the steep embankment. We all fell on top of each other, a very fat man almost squashing his skinny little wife! But for strict rules to keep the doors closed properly, some of us would have fallen out the other side, down the bank, school bags and all!

School bags – mostly had brown cases or leather satchels, not the pretty and practical back packs of today! But then, we didn’t take home half a ton of books each night either, just a few for homework.

Each summer Mum would sew us three girls and herself, a lovely new cotton frock; glazed cotton & seersucker were the latest fabrics. We did feel special when going to town, with white socks and lacy cotton white gloves to complete the outfit!

When I was a child and indeed for many more years after, children did not receive gifts at any old time, just on very special occasions, so we appreciated what we had and cherished and looked after it. No ‘throw away society’ then.

While at home our free time was spent making our own fun, tadpoling, billycarting down the hills (yes – girls too)! In summer we went fishing and swam in the freezing brackish waters at the swimming hole in the river; beautiful with it’s decoration of floating Christmas Bush blossoms.

We made ‘forts’ in the bush and had ‘serious wars’ against each other or make believe cowboys and Indians. Once when I was tied to a post by the Indians, I forgot to look after my little sister! By the time I remembered, she had completely disappeared! The word went out, and after a frenzy of search and panic, checking the dark river, two bridges and the huge catchment dam, she was found sitting on the steps of the single mens’ quarters singing to herself!

Oh well! I realize that there is too much to tell just now – must write a book one day! Nan Gillie (qualified as being over 60)

Dear Jayne, Here is my version of your editorial for May. You are right. Not everything that changes is bad, just different and takes getting used to – but just how much has to change that is important?

Hopefully, my children, (although not perfect) have been instilled with the 10 commandments, good judgement and common sense, know the difference between right and wrong, stand up for their beliefs and take responsibility for their actions and be aware of consequences. Hopefully.

I hope (being all boys) the situation never arises where they will be asked to serve their country, that they don’t indulge in too much fast food (although who doesn’t enjoy the odd ice-cream cone) and that they have very meaningful relationships with their life partners.

We have recently become a 2 wage family, but my children have never been in a day-care centre in their life (there was too much I would have missed out on and they were my children, my responsibility) It’s not that I’m against them – my best friend is a child carer and ANY PARENT would love to have her care for their child!

My children have always been taught to respect their elders even if they don’t call them ‘sir’.

As a family unit, the children no longer living at home still arrive almost every weekend to stay the night and spend time together (watching them play football is a very proud moment!) As long as the CD player is turned down to a loud roar there is nothing better than all of us talking over the top of each other while sitting down to a meal and then watching a DVD! Oh yes, some of them have an earring too!!

Not all the political speeches we hear are worth listening to these days anyway, and we may not have 5 & 10 penny shops but Chickenfeed have a pretty good $2 equivalent.

A car back then may have cost $600 but how much was a weekly wage? If you work it out, considering today’s weekly wage the price of a car is actually cheaper now that it was then!

Some things have definitely changed or evolved, but family values in my home are just as important to me now as they were to my father when he was raising a family.

Modern technology progresses continually before our eyes but it is not a bad thing, where would we be if we never set or achieved goals or strived to better our lives.

We cannot deny that computers are the future, but they are only as good as the people developing them, fast food is here to stay, (let’s hope that scientists and nutritionists continue to unlock ‘the good stuff’) and that drugs and greed are definitely out there, but we can instil good morals and independent thinking in our children and rest in the knowledge that whatever lies ahead for the next generation, (good, bad or indifferent), we did our best! Name supplied

If it’s not urgent you can Probably leave it a bit longer. Book in now before the Christmas rush Phone numbers not displayed will not be answered If it is urgent you’ve probably left it too late.

Health Notes Heartburn / indigestion or reflux. This is often described as a burning feeling that moves up the food pipe (oesophagus) towards the throat.

Other symptoms include burping up stomach juices, suddenly getting extra saliva in your mouth, a cough that cannot be explained.

The muscle ring, which is between the stomach and the oesophagus, sometimes does not close properly and the acid contents from the stomach wash up into the oesophagus. This causes burning to the oesophagus, which is painful.

Some things can put pressure on the muscle ring and force it open; Eating large meals, eating too quickly, not chewing properly, eating then exercising, bending over or straining, lying flat, being overweight, being pregnant or eating spicy acidic fatty foods.

Some things can cause the muscle ring to lose its strength or tone; Getting older, alcohol, smoking, caffeine drinks, stress and anxiety, some medicines.

Any chest pain should be discussed with your doctor, as there are many illnesses that can cause chest pain. If you have heartburn there are ways to prevent it occurring; Eat smaller meals, eat slowly, chew well, cut down alcohol and caffeine drinks, stop smoking, raise the head end of your bed by about 1 brick, loose weight, talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your medicines.

Antacid tablets or mixtures are often used to relieve heartburn (e.g. Mylanta, Gaviscon, Quickeze). These are quite effective but if you need to use them most days, then you probably need something else to prevent the heartburn from occurring. There are many acid-suppressing medications available from your doctor or pharmacist (e.g. ranitidine or Zantac). When taken every day, they prevent heartburn. Chronic heartburn can cause damage to the oesophagus, and it may require many months of acid-suppressing medications to heal the oesophagus.

Heartburn is very common, but you don’t need to suffer. Ask us what may be most appropriate for you. Valley Voices

The Valley Voices Choir would welcome anyone interested in singing to come along and enjoy the companionship that goes along with the singing every Monday night.

On the 13th of May our group entertained the clients at Cosgrove Park in Launceston and during June we are planning a trip to entertain the clients at Aminya in Scottsdale.

Lilydale History Group Last month’s Progressive contained an article relating to the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Lilydale Memorial Hall. Our Hall and many others like it were built as a fitting tribute to the men and women who served and often paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country in times of conflict.

Many residents of Lilydale may remember going to functions at the Hall. As a child I can recall attending Dances and seeing the ladies dressed in their long ball gowns with the men wearing suits. These Balls saw those attending dancing to the strains of many Waltz tunes, such grace and beauty is rarely seen at today’s modern functions

During the fifties and sixties Saturday night saw the hall transformed into a Picture theatre and patrons were treated to cartoons, newsreels and a feature film. Often there was a serial which continued over several weeks and we just had to attend or we missed the next exciting episode about the Lone Ranger and his faithful Indian friend Tonto, The Adventures of Batman and Robin or any number of serials which were doing the rounds at that time.

Sadly with the advent of Television attendances at the Pictures eventually waned and we lost another facet of our past.

If you have fond (or maybe not so fond) memories of the Hall why not become involved and make this years celebrations something to remember.

This months Editorial contained references to Sister Mary Walsh and we have information about her for those who wish know more.

As always the members of the History Group are always looking for more Historic facts and ways to preserve our rich and often colourful past. If you would like to know more or maybe join our Group we would love to hear from you. We meet on the third Friday of the month in the Old Courtroom on the Main Rd at 8.00pm in the Summer months and 7.30pm in Winter. Mary Walsh Centre News

Once again winter’s with us, bringing shorter days and longer nights and also the need for wearing winter woolies and for piling a few more logs on the fire. We need to remember that God is watching over us now as He has always done. An early morning prayer at the beginning of each day can secure for us a successful and happy day. God is watching over us and our day goes along smoothly and successfully and we find that a smile from us soon catches on and everyone feels happier. Too few people smile at others these days, but smiling is contagious and should be passed around. We should also try and help somebody along life’s way. At the Mary Walsh centre we celebrated Anzac Day with an Anzac quiz. A wreath was made using flowers from various gardens around Lilydale, which was laid at the cenotaph at the 11.00am service by Darian, who attended with her grandson, Stefan. We went on a drive in late April, through Lalla, returning via Second River Road, to enjoy the beautiful autumn leaves. Other activities included an outing to Aldersgate Village to attend their “Fashion Memoirs” afternoon tea. We dressed up in our fashion memories and I might add that Jean Arnold created quite a sensation in her milking outfit, complete with gumboots! Debbie has had us busily sewing together knitted squares to make some warm rugs for winter and smaller projects for future stalls, such as fridge magnets and decorated soap. The centre raised a total of $191.20 for the Tsunami appeal. Ellena Geeves paid us a visit to collect our requests for our six monthly radio programme on Way FM. It was pleasing to see the centre packed with happy smiling faces and filled with the buzz of industry and chatter and our Irish visitor, Bernie led us in some singing in the afternoon. Jean Arnold travelled to Hobart with Helen Chick to attend the celebratory luncheon at the Grand Chancellor Hotel for the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women. (In case you hadn’t heard, Helen successful nominated Mary Walsh for the roll.) We had an armchair trip to the Cook Islands thanks to our volunteer Jennifer Smyth who had just returned with a suntan, souvenirs and lots of photographs. I must say Jennifer looked very exotic in her lei and garland. Debbie and Donald kindly brought their little four-week-old Jack Russell puppies in to visit us. They were warm and soft and so lovely to hold. Pat Pickin brought her extensive collection of Nymbioda crystals to show. Luckily we had a day when there was plenty of sunshine and our walls sparkled with the rainbow reflections. Several of us purchased some of the crystals for gift giving. We celebrated Enid’s birthday with a cake and a card.

As I write we are preparing for the” Biggest Morning Tea” to raise funds for the Cancer Council. The (relief) cook, Jenny Story, is busily making some special savouries and snacks for the occasion. Flanagan And Chugg Tae Kwon Do – Lilydale Club On Saturday the 7th of May Flanagan and Chugg Tae Kwon Do held an inter club tournament at the Longford Sports Centre. Representing Lilydale were Josh Clarke, Alex James, Terry Hammersley, Sarah and Melinda Kolodziej, Ebony Jenson, Catie Hanstein, Stevie and Trent Carr, Bronwyn Radford, Abbey Lack, Steele Davis and Lincoln Marthick.

There were three events held on the day, point sparring, forms and jumping high front kick. Lilydale competed in second division (clubs with 25 to 50 students) against Kings Meadows, Oatlands and Evandale and won every event, taking home the perpetual shield for this year.

Just two weeks later the Flanagan and Chugg Tae Kwon Do took a team of fighters to Melbourne to compete in an International Sports Karate Association tournament. Three members from Lilydale were in the team with Sarah Kolodziej placing third in the Advanced to Black Belt 13 to 14 year old girls sparring and Chris Kolodziej winning the men’s over 35 Black Belt sparring. Even though this was the first time we had competed in one of these tournaments and there were 25 other Victorian martial arts clubs competing, at the end of the day Flanagan and Chugg placed second over all – proving that just because we are from Tassie we are still competitive in Australia’s greatest sporting city.

We hold classes at Lilydale in the Memorial Hall on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6.30 to 8.00pm. We welcome beginners of all ages and abilities. If you have any questions please phone Chris and Cathy on 6395 1101 or Mike and Judy on 6344 4363. Lions Club News Our guest speaker for our May dinner meeting was Mr Albert Van Zetten who spoke on the operations and history of the City Mission in Launceston. The members also attended a meeting of the Lions Club of Launceston North at the Crown Hotel in Launceston. The Club’s Changeover dinner is to be held in July at Bridport. Don’t forget pulverised cow manure is still for sale. Start preparing for your Spring planting now. Enquiries phone Stephen 6395 1323

Term 1 is over and everyone is looking forward to a well earned break. Many exciting things have occurred during the term including very successful swimming and cross country carnivals, weekend outdoor education camps and lots of hard work in classrooms. Many of our Grade 9/10 students and several staff members are eagerly looking forward to spending time in the sun on the Gold Coast during the last week of the holidays. We hope they have a wonderful trip and don’t worry too much about those of us left behind coping with Tasmanian frosts! Other Grade 9/10 students will be attending an “outdoor education experience” at Mount Cameron and Mr Grubert has assured us that it will certainly be an experience! These trips provide students and staff with a great opportunity to further develop positive student and staff relationships and enjoy each other’s company in a different relaxed setting. We have had several staff changes with Mrs Paula Huett being farewelled to commence maternity leave. Mrs Trudie Bone and Ms Nerrida Scamp will be taking on the responsibilities of teaching the Prep class and we would like to take this opportunity to welcome Ms Scamp to Lilydale. Miss Jaide Honeychurch has replaced Mrs Bone on the 5/6 class. We also farewell Miss Lauren Prewer who has accepted a senior position with Cressy District School.

It is with deep sadness that we share with our Lilydale Community the loss of our esteemed colleague and friend Carol Willson, who passed away on Sunday, April 24th. Carol was our laboratory technician for a number of years. She carried out her work in a most professional manner and nothing asked of her was ever too much t roub le . Mos t important ly , Carol wi l l be remembered as a true friend who was always there for others.

The school have placed a plaque and rhododendron in our Memorial Garden in her honour.

Cross Country 2005 On Friday 13th May, the Lilydale School Cross Country was held. Students performed extremely well in beautiful conditions with great participation from both our senior and junior students. Well done to all participants who made it a successful day. The winning house was Corrina on 238 points followed by Maralinga on 215 and Nairanna on 147.

Lilydale District School Parents & Friends Quiz Night Parents and Friends would like to express their thanks to all those who helped to make the Quiz night held on Friday 29th April a good one. The reigning champions took the trophy again, but it was close—the runners up gave them a run for their money. We had excellent support from the teachers and the community put in a number of last minute teams so the hall became quite animated as teams tussled with questions. Michael Ferguson MP managed his first time as quiz compere very well, and thanks to the generosity of many local individuals and businesses in town lots of people went home with prizes to remember the night with. $1029.15 was raised for the Community Gym.

Karoola Playgroup The introduction into May bought our long awaited Mothers Day Family gathering. The event was greeted by an excellent turnout, for an overcast autumn’s day. Activities during the day included a fundraising stall, raffle, lucky door prize and games for the children. Everyone who attended, thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and the day was extremely successful.

May was creative and constructive and full of activity, beginning with special picture frames made by the children, to give to their mums on Mothers Day.

The end of Term 1 was finished with an excellent day trip to Kidz Paradise, where all the children had a really awesome time.

The Playgroup will be open as usual through the May holidays, for members who wish to attend.

Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch

On this cold winter evening 12 people braved the cold to attend this

meeting. Our Guest for the evening was Annette Waddle from the Launceston City Council, who spoke on her very interesting life and many of the things she has achieved since being a Council Member. Here are some of those things that she has been involved in- The street lights on the Launceston side of Lilydale, drainage in Station Road, the B.M.X. track, the Village Green, Roundabout at Alanvale Rd., Earl Arts Centre, the L.G.H. Consumer Reference Group, Migrant Resource Centre, restoration of the Trams at the Tram Shed, the roof over the Mall, and she is on the Library Board, the Festivale Committee, also involved with the introduction of the "Meter Man" in Launceston and the refusal by the Council of the proposed Liquor Outlet near Woolworths at Mowbray. I am sure there are a number of other Committees etc that she is involved in, but her talk was most interesting and I am sure she lives a very busy and exciting life. Thank you Annette. POLICE REPORT 1. STEALING - Between 1/4/05 and 22/4/05 two water hoses valued at $350 were stolen from a water tanker that was located in bushland near the Retreat area. 2. caused to an excavator and skidder to the value of about $1000. The equipment was in bushland about 5kms off Prossers Road, Underwood. SUSPICIOUS INCIDENTS Some signs for "Cows Crossing" were taken from Second River Road. If anyone knows anything about these could they contact the Police. POINTS OF INTEREST 1. Recently Police have noticed numerous vehicles being parked and left unlocked with the keys in the ignition along Main Road, Lilydale. Numerous reminders have been left with the cars during the last month, however, it is necessary to remind owners that it is an offence to do so and future infringements will be prosecuted. 2 Local Police have received numerous calls within the past month concerning various complaints about firearms. Firearm owners are reminded that no firearm can be used within 250 metres of any other dwelling unless the consent of that resident has been supplied.

We are hoping to have Jim Byrne, State Treasurer of N.H.W. as our guest at our next meeting on JUNE 9TH, AT THE LILYDALE FIRE STATION, at 7.30 pm. EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO COME ALONG TO ANY OF OUR MEETINGS. They are not long and drawn out so you can have quite an early night. CWA Notes Another AGM has been and gone, seems like no time since the 2004 AGM. Bit of a worry, isn’t it? Previous office bearers were recycled – Margaret Hanstein as President, Eileen Brooks – Treasurer, Dorothy Story Secretary. We look forward to another busy and productive year.

Two big events are coming up soon. The State Handcraft and Home Industries Exhibition is at Bridport, July 8th-10th in the Town Hall. This is open to the public and very well worth the effort of attending. Second is a group social day at Lilydale on 3rd August for CWA members in The Northern Group, consisting of branches from Swansea to Winnaleah, George Town, across to Selbourne, Launceston, Cressy and towns in between, making 20 branches. Flinders Island is also included in our group. A widely scattered area and chances to meet fellow members are rare. By the time this has arrived in your mailbox, June 1st

meeting will have been. Hopefully our roll call of knickers – yes, you have read correctly, panties, knickers, whichever you wish, - will have yielded several pairs. Why knickers? These are needed at L.G.H. for patients ready to go home, I guess unexpectedly at times. Men’s track pants and toiletries are always needed too. To finish off our daylong meeting – AGM lunch – monthly meeting – Jennifer Smyth who had just returned from a holiday to the Cook Islands, told of her view of life there, and showed interesting locally made souvenirs. Most interesting was the supermarket docket….. because so much of the household goods have to be imported, prices of what we would call ‘everyday items’ were quite exorbitant. Fascinating group of islands. July meeting will be on the 6th of the month.

Our Tamar Valley Day held at Beaconsfield was a successful day for Lilydale. One lady was in the winning team and another was runner-up, while a gentleman from our Club won first prize in the raffle and third prize was also taken out by Lilydale. A successful day all round! Our Pennant team are enjoying their games and are quite successful. On the 26th May, we hired our rooms out for a Landcare seminar. I would like to thank all the ladies who cooked and gave up their day to help with the luncheon especially our President who arrived at 7.30 and didn’t leave until after 5. We are planning and looking forward to our birthday which comes up in July. Anybody who is 55 or over, come along Tuesday and Friday afternoons, have a cuppa and a game of indoor bowls, it is a lot of fun. Until next month, Robyn East Secretary Book Group News

Next meeting will be on Wednesday 8th June 2005, 7.30pm at Julie’s. Theme – A light-hearted read! Recommended ‘The Devil in Tim’ by Tim Bowden – a funny & amazing account of the Bowden’s trip back to Tasmania in 2003. During their travels the couple visited Providence Vineyard at Lalla and learnt more about this vineyard’s history. Packed with lots of information about Tasmania, it’s people and it’s history.

Everyone who cares about our land and landscape are very welcome to attend, and hear what our dynamic speakers have to say. We thank the Lilydale District School and the School Farm for all its assistance to Lilydale Landcare and its vision for the future of our community. The War on Weeds Congratulations to those who have used the Quickspray unit so far. A typical comment, from an Underwood landholder: - “So easy to use. The retractable hose is excellent and the spray easily adjustable. I achieved a lot in a day.” Thanks again to Mr Tim Denny, Mr Jack Wilson, Mr Brian Baxter, Mr Graeme Arnold and Mr Chris Strong who made it possible for us to buy the equipment and make it available for YOU to use. Bookings can be made at the School Farm 63951478. Merthyr Park Despite the continuing dry conditions, our understory plants in Merthyr Park have survived and grown considerably. Take a stroll and see what this special part of our community has to offer. Future working bees will be posted as spring approaches.

Quotable Quotes: "I'd rather be a could-be if I cannot be an are; because a could-be is a maybe who is reaching for a star. I'd rather be a has-been than a might-have-been, by far; for a might have-been has never been, but a has was once an are." -Milton Berle

KATHRYN HAY Member for Bass

Successful Tenderer For $600 000 Lilydale Gym

Continental Builders Pty Ltd has won the tender to build a new gymnasium at Lilydale District High School.

Member for Bass Kathryn Hay said construction on the gym was expected to start at the end of this month.

“The $600,000 upgrade at the school will provide first-class facilities for students participating in physical activities as well as a flexible new work environment for teachers,” Ms Hay said.

“It will also be of huge importance to the Lilydale community for recreational use outside school hours.

“The gym will be marked out for use for basketball, badminton and volleyball.

“The gymnasium is part of the State Government’s new Community Health and Well Being program announced late last year to ensure Tasmanian students have the most up-to-date sporting facilities available.”

Ms Hay said the gym would be managed by a community board that would oversee the building’s fit-out.

“We are anticipating that students and staff at Lilydale District High will be able to use their new facilities before the end of the year,” she said.
