The Lilydale Progressive—September 2003 Page 1 2003 International year of FreshWater I copped a bit of flack last month because the latest issue of the Progressive wasn’t available in local shops until Wednesday, so I thought I’d give you all an outline of how the Progressive is produced. Each month Carol and I spend between 5 and 8 hours (depending on whether the computer is playing up or not :-) on a Saturday afternoon sitting at the Access Centre typing and laying out the Progressive (we’re quite happy to do this as, whilst time consuming, we have a lot of fun and a bit of a chat). The master copy is then printed out and proof read. The master copy is delivered to the printer in Launceston on Monday morning. The printer prints 750 copies and on Wednesday or Thursday night (depending on how much work the printer has had that week) they are picked up. Thursday or Friday morning a box of Progressives (around 350) is dropped off at the Lilydale Post Office, where, thanks to the kindness of Tom and the staff they are folded and delivered free of charge to around 300 local homes. We usually deliver copies to local shops on Monday or Tuesday (this is so that all those who have one delivered with their mail aren’t getting duplicate copies.) As you can see a lot of people are involved in getting the Progressive to you as quickly as possible, I hope this clears up any confusion as to how the Progressive is produced. When I was living in Victoria (Churchill) there was a local newsletter produced. Everyone who wanted one paid 20 cents per copy. Of course this didn’t cover the cost of producing the newsletter, but it did go a ways towards helping out. The Lilydale community has been fortunate enough to receive the Progressive for over 23 years for FREE. I’m sure I’ve let you know before that each and every issue that is produced costs over $500, so you can see there is also a considerable financial as well as time cost involved in putting together a 16 page monthly newsletter. Ok on to other things. September appears to be Production month in Lilydale, with both the Lilydale District school and the Lilydale Players in full swing with their prospective performances. It sounds like both groups are well on the way to finalising some great entertainment and I’d urge you to go along and check out our local talent. The School’s performance “You Wish” will be in the Hall on 3rd & 4th September and the Players production “A Fly in the Ointment” will be held in the Hall on 19th & 20th of September. More details are available in this issue. Despite the rain and cold of the past few weeks, I’m sure people new to the District will agree with me on how pretty Lilydale is starting to look now with the Rhododendrons, Wattle and Daffodils flowering. It never seems quite so cold when there’s a blue sky and lots of bright flowers about. My garden is really coming to life at the moment (well that is what you can see of it in amongst the blackberries and weeds. Hmm sounds like I’d better get the gardening gloves on and get back to work.) The past few weeks I’m sure people would have thought I’d been in a fight with a sabre tooth tiger if they had seen the size and depth of some of the blackberry scratches on various parts of my body. Oh well I guess I’ll just have to rub on a bit more ointment! The Lilydale Progressive—September 2003 Page 1

2003 International year of FreshWater

I copped a bit of flack last month because the latest issue of the Progressive wasn’t available in local shops until Wednesday, so I thought I’d give you all an outline of how the Progressive is produced.

As you can see a lot of people are involved in getting the Progressive to you as quickly as possible, I hope this clears up any confusion as to how the Progressive is produced.

When I was living in Victoria (Churchill) there was a local newsletter produced. Everyone who wanted one paid 20 cents per copy. Of course this didn’t cover the cost of producing the

newsletter, but it did go a ways towards helping out.

Letter to the Editor After reading July’s Progressive, I have to ask, how can the school deal with the issues raised in the letter presented to Rose Parker when it can not even agree from one term to the next on a standard uniform, let alone ensure that the students all comply with it?

I have received in the last year or so several notices from the school regarding the wearing of a set uniform, listing all the acceptable items, but there are differences each time. Cargos are in for girls, then in the next notice they are out, now they are on the acceptable list again. Jeans are not acceptable under any circumstances and then grey jeans are okay.

Not only can they not set a uniform without changing their minds every other month they allow some students to continue to flout the rules openly without even the slightest attempt to follow the dress code but they also are allowing the wearing of ‘designer brand name clothing’ which is not only against the uniform code but one of the greatest infringements one can make. Right from the start it has always been NO designer brand name clothing as this sets an unaccept-able standard amongst the students of the haves and have nots.

If like me you see not only what the students are wearing but what some of their teachers, who set the trend, come to school in then its no wonder the students don’t give a d###.

Tasmanian Regional Arts: Due to circumstances beyond its control the Lilydale Branch Committee has had no choice but to postpone its two major events, the Mountain of Talent Art Exhibition and the Variety Concert (which was overcome by the School Production, International Concert, Players performance) planned for this year.

The general feeling of the Committee is, that due to its diminutive size (in numbers, not stature!) it should go back to a grass roots level and concentrate on workshops. Intimate concerts and of course, the Lan-tern Walk and Carols on the Green.

The Painted Poles continue to be a drawcard to tourists and other non-Lilydalians, with an article to be published in the Mercury and a “Pole Ramble” and free sausage sizzle on Sunday 31st August, organised in conjunction with the “Living Tasmanian Artists” project and Aurora.

Also, we have been contacted by the Lilydale District School to assist with a project. More about that later.

Regards, Frea

Progress Association News 1. The Progress Association exists for what reason? 2. What is the Progress Association involved with? Lilydale District Progress Association Inc(LDPA) is a community organisation which aims to improve the Lilydale community through consultation between the community, LDPA, other community organisations, Launceston City Council (LCC) and State and Federal governments. Any person living in Lilydale or its surrounding areas can become a member of the Association and even at a committee level.

On the membership, most community groups have problems with membership, or more to the point, lack of members. A large membership gives community groups many skills and experiences to draw from; this makes for a truly representative organisation.

On a more personal level, I would like to invite any person new or old to the district to come along to one of our meetings and have some input, and express their views on the future of the Association and the District: I will personally welcome some new points of view.

Some of the projects and things that the Association are involved in and do are:

• The Lilydale Progressive is a free monthly community newspaper publication. This is done with the support of over 20 local businesses who advertise in the Progressive, with articles coming from the Community and Community Organisations. This has happened for the last 23years.

• With help from the community, LCC and State Government over the last three years we have developed the Village Green concept to improve the centre of the township.

• We have also had members involved in the North East Tasmania Access Study, examining the best transport route for that part of the state. As part of that we have also had involvement in the redesign of the Lilydale main street to make it a safer and more pleasant area for everyone who comes into Lilydale.

• The Court House Complex: These rooms are available to the community and groups at a minimal cost. Book at the Lilydale Post Office.

Please remember that all positions on the Progress Association are done on a voluntary basis and the more people involved makes life easier for all concerned.

Hope to see you at the AGM on 2nd September, at 7.00 p.m at the Old Court House. TTFN Graeme Arnold - President LDPA

Mary Walsh Centre We are still having some very cold weather. There have been few days when the temperature has been sufficiently comfortable to lure us outside into the sunshine. Cold winds have been our lot on many days, even when it looks pleasant out there in the sunshine.

Most of us have heating in our homes, so we should count our blessings and be thankful for what we have; and springtime cannot be far away.

The daffodils and other bulbs are coming into bloom and daphnes and wattle trees are already in bloom, so nature lovers should be smiling.

On farms lambs are arriving thick and fast and also calves and foals can be seen about. I guess that the wildlife is also dropping it's young all around us and birds will be busy building their nests very soon now.

Due to the frequent showers we are having, gardeners are not able to do much in their gardens, as the ground is too wet. The weeds are, however, thriving and if pulled out come away with soil clinging to their roots.

At the Day Centre some of our people are away ill and so not much craft work is being done. We have Bingo and singing, and some quizzes to occupy us, also some knitting is done.

A heat pump has recently been installed at the centre to keep us all warm.

We recently acknowledged the 101st birthday of Mrs. Linda Kalasim, who was one of our original clients, sending her a card to mark the occasion.

Happiness is something we create in our minds, Not something we search for and seldom find, For it's by completing what God gives us to do That we find real contentment and happiness too.

Mary Walsh Centre AGM The Mary Walsh Centre Inc Association will hold its 2003 Annual General Meeting at the Centre on Tuesday September 23rd at 7.30pm. All positions are declared vacant and office bearers and committee for the coming year will be elected. All welcome.

Helen Chick, Hon Secretary.

This was our AGM and there was no change made to the Office Bearers except for the Vice President. The positions are as follows:

President: David Brown Vice President: Robyn East Secretary: Sue Morris Treasurer: Bev McCarthy Publicity Officer: Lorna Williams Public Officer: Sue Morris This meeting was not so well attended as the last one. We had Troy Walker as our guest speaker and he brought his Belgium shepherd dog, Broadie, with him. He has a new dog since he was here last and he showed a short video on this breed and what it is capable of doing. He showed another video on how Police dogs are of great importance in tracking down and catching criminals in different countries. Troy works solely with his dog in Security work. He then did a live demonstration on how his dog attacks and holds a person who is threatening it. It did not let go of the ‘victim’ until Troy commanded it to do so. This was a most interesting demonstration. Troy’s work is Security surveillance for anyone who wants it e.g. schools, businesses, homes, farms etc. He can be contacted under “night Shepherds K9”, Ph. 63 26 6918.

Lilydale Online Access Centre We had a visit from Michelle O’Byrne MHA at the Centre last month, she was very impressed with the types of facilities we have to offer our patrons, and with the number of different projects we have under-taken over the past three years. One of our ongoing projects is of course the monthly production of the Lilydale Progressive, another was the completion of the HART portal for health information (www.hart.org.au) still another regular project is the Lilydale Calendar.

Which brings me perfectly onto the subject that yes it is that time of the year again when the Lilydale Calendar will soon be updated for next year. So if you’re a member of a community group that’s on the calendar please let me know if there are any details that need changing on your entry. If you are a local business who is already on the calendar again, please let me know of any changes you’d like for next year. If you’re a local business and you don’t have a listing on the calendar, it is a very cost effective way of getting information about your business out to residents of the Lilydale District. For just over $40 you can advertise your business in local homes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Lilydale Community Calendar is produced by the Access Centre and provided free of charge to all local residents. If you’d like more information on how to have a listing on the Calendar, contact me at the Centre during opening times.

We currently have an opportunity to run a Farm Mapping Course at the Centre. The course would be open to eligible Farm Biz Participants. We can run the course for 8 people so if you’re interested, contact the Centre for more details.

‘YOU WISH…’ - 2003 PRODUCTION This year’s production ‘You Wish’ is off to a successful start. This is a group-devised presentation which deals with daydreams, ambitions and wishes of young people. With its energetic acting, dancing, singing and live band, “You Wish” highlights the students’ range of talents in the performing arts. The production uses many contemporary songs, large dance numbers and features a line dancing scene, as well as contrasting dramatic and musical moments. It is a light-hearted but relevant piece of entertainment including a satirical game show, a world where adults behave like adolescents and a “taking it to the streets” segment plus a few other surprises. A highlight of the production will certainly be the very glittering set which has as its feature a large dream-catcher which symbolises the theme of the show.

EVENING PERFORMANCES Wednesday 3rd of September at 7.30pm Thursday 4th of September at 7.30pm Adults: $5.50 Student/Children: $3.30 Family: $15.40

On Friday, 8th August the Grade 9/10 football team played against Port Dalrymple in the District Schools Northern Grand Final.

Lilydale performed extremely well despite having a number of students absent with the flu, or recovering from the flu. Students trained a number of times after school prior to the match. It was a very close game with Lilydale being defeated by 8 points.

A big thank you to the numerous parents and friends who assisted on the day. Events like this don’t happen without community support.

Football Club News: The Lilydale Senior Team completed the 16 roster matches undefeated, two more wins and the Club has a Premiership. The last time the Seniors won a flag was 1994. The under 16’s finished in 2nd position losing only two games for the year, both to the Scottsdale Crows who finished on top. The Reserves play in the 1st semi final and from now on must win every game to stay in contention.

In the NEFU Best and Fairest vote count, the Club did not poll as well as expected. Steve Buchanan only got 7 votes (15 last year) and Nathan Arnold 1 (last game of the year). David Stewart with 13 was Lilydale’s highest.

NEFU Best and Fairest

Seniors: 1st Tony Saunders (Crows) 17 2nd John Petterwood (Crows) 16 2nd Ricky Crossingham (St Helens) 16 Reserves 1st C. Stone (Winnaleah) 14 2nd Mark Allsop (Lilydale) 11 2nd G. Joseph (St. Helens) 11 Under 16’s 1st Darius Sutton (Branxholm) 26 2nd Lane Dwyer (Lilydale) 21 3rd B. Butler (Crows) 18 In a Club/Team context things look a lot better in the Seniors: 16 Players got votes with 13 best on ground (3 votes) out of a possible 16. Reserves: 15 players got votes, 11 Best on Ground Under 16’s: 8 players got votes, 12 Best on Ground.

This would indicate a more even spread of players in the Lilydale teams and their strength comes from not having to rely on one or two ‘Stars’ but from all Players making a contribution. The Club hopes that all Players continue to contribute right through the Finals series, because if that happens Lilydale will be hard to beat.

An oversight at the time of the last Progressive saw functions listed on Sunday 24th August, we temporarily forgot about the AFL Match at York Park on that day. The Club’s best and fairest vote count has been rescheduled for Saturday 30th August with the break up for the Under 13’s and Under 10’s the following day (31st). This is the problem with a monthly newsletter, one slip up and you’re gone, by the time the next one is printed it is all old news. The Club hopes that people found out about the date changes and that no one was inconvenienced, if they were we can only say sorry.

Curtains! A very attractive young lady with a particular colour hair (politically correct), went into a material shop and asked to see some pretty pink curtain material. The sales assistant found a very attractive piece, and making conversation, asked what it was for. “Curtains for my computer screen” was the reply. “But, you don’t need a curtain for a computer screen”, said the startled shop assistant. To which the young lady replied “Hello, I’ve got WINDOWS!!!!!!”

(slapped cheek appearance). After a few days a rash may be found on the arms, legs or trunk. It is pink and has a lacy appearance. It may fade easily, but re-appears after a bath or exercise. Older children and adults may sometimes get swollen joints (arthritis), which resolves after a few days.

Most people are exposed to the disease when they are children and cannot get it again. If a pregnant woman does get infected the unborn baby can have a severe infection. Pregnant women in contact with this disease should see their doctor for blood tests and monitoring of their pregnancy.

Children with haemolytic blood disorders (sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia) and children with leukaemia can suffer serious problems from the virus. In most children, the disease is a mild, flu-like illness, which gets better on its own after a few days. Paracetamol is useful for fever and aches and pains. Arthritis sufferers may need stronger medicines. A doctor should see all children who develop arthritis.

The incubation period for this illness is approximately 1 – 2 weeks and it is non-infectious once the rash appears.

Gardening Tips Undoubtedly, the main reason tomatoes are so widely grown is that home-grown tomatoes taste so much better than their store-bought counterparts. But another reason is the intrinsic vigor and hardiness of this nightshade relative, which almost always guarantees a successful harvest. However, the rapid growth of a healthy tomato plant can also lead to problems.

Like all plants, a tomato is a solar-powered sugar factory. For the first month or so it's in the garden, all of the sugar it produces is directed towards new leaf growth. During this stage, tomato plants grow very rapidly, doubling their size every 12 to 15 days. Eventually, the plants make more sugar than the single growing tip can use, which signals the plant to make new branches and to flower. This usually happens after 10 to 13 leaves have expanded, at which time the plant is 12 to 18 inches tall. In the next few weeks, the entire character of the tomato plant changes. If unsupported, the increasing weight of filling fruit and multiple side branches forces the plant to lie on the ground Once the main stem is horizontal, there is an increased tendency to branch. Left to its own devices, a vigorous indeterminate tomato plant can easily cover a 4- by 4-foot area with as many as 10 stems, each 3 to 5 feet long. By season's end, it will be an unsightly, impenetrable, disease-wracked tangle.

HEALTH NOTES From the Lilydale Pharmacy

There is a lot if illness around. As well as the wide selection of colds, flus and sinus problems, we have other contagious viral diseases.

Hand, foot & mouth disease is a viral disease that is affecting young children at the moment. A rash of small vesicles erupt around the feet, hands, in the mouth and occasionally near the nappy area. Fever, headaches and sore throat may occur before the rash appears. It is contagious and usually resolves after a week or so. Ulcers sometimes develop in the mouth. This causes a sore mouth that can result in young children refusing to eat or drink. Teething gels, paracetamol and soft, cool foods like jelly, icecream, custard, yoghurt etc will help until the ulcers heal.

Most people get the disease when they are children and cannot get it again.

Slapped cheek disease is a viral disease. It gets this name because, early in the infection, the child's cheeks may be bright red, as if they have been slapped. The virus that causes it is called parvovirus B 19. It is different from the parvovirus of dogs and cats. The virus is transmitted in droplets coughed out by infected individuals.

The disease mainly affects school and pre-school aged children, and not uncommonly causes outbreaks in schools. Most adults are immune, having already been infected when they were children.

Children may get a runny nose, fever, aches and pains, and a rash. At first the rash may be on the cheeks

History Group The Lilydale History Group held its 2003 Annual General meeting at the Old Courtroom on Friday August 15th .

Office bearers elected for the coming year are: President David Brown, Vice President Jack Wilson, Secretary Helen Chick, Treasurer Jessie Brown.

We have 3 new members and we welcome them to our group. The History panel is still being looked at and we hope to have it finished soon so it can go on display at the Village Green.

Our meetings are held on the third Friday of the month at the Old Courtroom and a warm welcome will be extended to all who wish to join us. For more information please contact Helen on 6395 2060.

CWA Notes The days are lengthening very noticeably, some rather heavy frosts around, but no one minds when there is a nice sunny day to follow, and a bit of warmth creeping into the sunshine.

In August, we started in the morning to complete tiny little mice, very fiddly but oh so cute, and much, much nicer than the larger grey variety. In a few months they will have new homes around the world, they will be distributed at the World Conference in Hobart in March.

State Conference will be in Launceston the first week of September, this clashes with our usual meeting date so we will not be meeting until October 1st.

Items for the Samaritans Christmas boxes are being collected (each box contains 6 items – something to wear, something to eat, an item of personal hygiene, something to play with plus drawing/writing materials and something to love) and boxes covered. Baby box has also received several garments.

Some quotes:

• Never let yesterday use up too much of today. • A pessimist is sone who looks at the land of milk and honey and sees only calories and cholesterol. • God wisely designed the human body so we can neither pat our own backs, nor kick ourselves too easily. “See” you next month

Did You Know?

When potatoes first appeared in Europe in the 17th century, it was thought that they were disgusting and were blamed for starting outbreaks of leprosy and syphilis. As late as 1720 in America, eating potatoes was believed to shorten a person's life

Eighty percent of the world's rose species come from Asia.

Lilydale District School Proposed Shade/Outdoor Café Area

Report from Students Alexandra Halliday and Emma Colgrave, who interviewed Mrs Stanfield and Mr Deane on the exciting new concept for the area between the tennis courts and the Science building.

Question: Why?

“It was decided a couple of years ago we needed a shade area for the older students. K-4 already had one. It was our turn. This area wasn’t being used. Students made tables and got it started and now we are doing a finishing bit and some gardens.”

Mr. D said “kids have somewhere to sit in the shade”.

How big?

“We were going to get it enclosed, but cost was about $20,000 and would have taken away the light from the cooking room, so we are going to use umbrellas. Students will make most of the stuff”.

“Students and community can help by supporting School Fair”.

“Miss Stanfield is excited and Emma thinks that it will make the School look more relaxed”.

What sort of thing could help?

“Sponsorship, erecting paintings and general work.”

“We are trying to start in some areas and work on to the next”.

Editor: If you are interested in helping out the kids (any help would be greatly appreciated), please contact Liz Stanfield at Lilydale District School

Area for proposed Outdoor Café at the school.

The area will include tables, gardens, Umbrellas for shade over the tables, perhaps a mural or other art works, and 3 bins.

Community input and support is being requested. If you can help either on a working bee, with design concepts or supply of materials please contact the school.

Dear all, by the time you read this we will have had our AGM. Hopefully we will have four new Board members to ably assist the team in keeping the Centre as a viable and useable space for all community members to come and enjoy.

I have resigned from the Board of the Mt Arthur Centre to pursue a more active role in the community. For example, for the next few months I have volunteered one day per week to find out if people need more support from Mental Health Services. One of the objectives for the project (run by the Richmond Fellowship) is to help people to have better access to these services and to find out what is lacking - if anything.

I will also be focusing on Community Development issues that are seen as important to those in this district. Please feel free to contact me regarding anything you are concerned about or would like to see happening in Lilydale that would bring people to a better understanding of themselves and each other.

At the Centre this month we have a yoga course starting. It begins 30th Sept and runs for 10 consecutive Tuesdays from 10am for approximately an hour. It will be run by the Launceston Yoga Centre and the cost is $100.00 ($10.00 per session). Alison Filgate is the person to contact if you would like to book your place on 6395 1052. So far there are 10 participants 15 is the maximum.

Except for the Yoga class, two meetings, three private functions and two weekends of Art Therapy the Centre is not putting on other activities during September besides the straw bale working bees, (unless there's something someone would like to arrange!!).

The first aid course for women, run by Tafe was a huge success and we are looking for 10 more women for a course for the early part of term one 2004. This is a free course. If you are interested in putting your name down let me know. Also Tafe have several courses that could be run here at the Centre. If you are a trainer of something such as public speaking/presentation skills, returning to study/presenting reports or anything suitable for women's study you can be paid to take classes here. Great opportunity!! We will need to know asap so Tafe can put us into their calendar. We are in the process of negotiating for a public speaking course with Tafe at the moment for term one next year. Any takers??

Anyway, have a wonderful spring and I'll see you in the village, hopefully. Regards, Maggie.

Asparagus Beds: Although establishing a good asparagus bed requires considerable work, your efforts will be rewarded. A well-planned bed can last from 20 to 30 years. For this reason, asparagus should be planted at the side or end of the garden, where it will not be disturbed by normal garden cultivation. Asparagus is one of the first vegetables ready to harvest in the spring. Asparagus should be planted as soon as the ground can be worked in the spring. One-year-old crowns or plants are preferred. The young plants have compact buds in the centre (crown), with numerous dangling, pencil-sized roots.

Weeds and grasses are the worst problems with asparagus. They compete with the developing spears, make an unsightly area in the garden and significantly decrease yield and quality. Start frequent, light, shallow cultivation early in the spring in both young plantings and mature patches that are being harvested.
