We will need cashiers and baggers. (Emma Wussow, Geoff Smith, and Kazan Hendricks are handlingfinances this year.).

We may need assistance in putting up and taking down shelving... Boy Scout Troop 302 from St. Michael's

are again assisting, but the more the merrier!

Advent: Listening with Expectant Hearts Kevin Thew Forrester

Liturgy Planning Committee

Within our Eucharist, a period of silence follows each lesson and the sermon . This period of silence provides

a gracious space during which our attention may drop in and down and away from the many cares that usuallyoccupy our mind and heart. We deliberately, yet gently, place the attention of our heart upon the DivineBreath that sustains us, moment-to-moment.

Subtle sound may help carry our attention into the depth. Christians, and those of other spiritual traditions, have long known that bells, gongs, chanting, etc., attract the heart, soothe the soul, and carry us into theDivine Silence.

On the four Sundays of Advent, we will use a singing bowl recently purchased by the Healing Arts Center toresonate during the period of silence following the lessons and the sermon. The Deacon or Priest will strikethe bowl, and the period of "silence" will last for the duration of the bowl's singing . We may listen to theAdvent silence with expectant hearts, allowing the bowl's song to settle our hearts on Christ within.

After the Season of Advent we will have a chance to gather to reflect on our experience of the liturgy.

The 115`h Annual Diocesan convention was filledwith excitement and energy about the upcomingelection for the next bishop of the Diocese of North-ern Michigan . Meeting in Marquette, October 15-18,delegates and visitors heard an extensive report fromthe Bishop Search Committee, recounting the workthat they have undertaken in the past year , with con-sultants and companionsEpiscopal Church. On October 1, theyannounced theresults of their work,

Chuk Kleber, retired fundraising consultant for non-

profits, offered a major portion of the afternoon pro-

gram, with an inspiring talk on stewardship and fund-

raising. "What is the single most important reason

why churches don't raise money for the importantwork they do? They don't ask. They may not ask at

all, or not enough, or not effectively. People say yes

to people they know, that they trust, that they carefor," Kleber said. "We need to build a bridge from

programs that make a difference, to the passions of the

people around us." He offered this talk as a part of theStewardship conference earlier this fall, which will beavailable on DVD for congregations (See your Minis-

try Developer for a copy).God of infinite possibilities and limitless compassion, grant us wisdom as we discern our next bishopfrom the nominees placed before us for election.Open our eyes to see your hand at workin this process of discernment and call.Guide us as we move forward in trust and tranquility, praying for those who have been identified as nominees. We pray also for those who will be delegatesto the electing convention, that we all may remain faithful on this journeyto live into our calling as your servant people. We ask this in the name of your Son. Amen.

ministry. Diocesan Council decided earlier this yearthat if we elect from within, the Ministry Developer

will remain in his/her current region , and if we electfrom outside the diocese, this person will serve asMinistry Developer in the Eastern Region, currently

open . The Bishop will be assisted by a halftimeMinistry Developer. Council will enter discussionand negotiation with the Bishop-elect on where thediocesan office will be and how we can best supportthe Bishop in his or her ministry.

As in years past, variousshort forums were availablefor participants, on a variety

of topics such as Interfaithconversations, the Trust As-sociation investments, 2011Budget, Communications,

Youth Ministry, and evenBreathing and Relaxationoffered by a St. Paul'smember Melissa Eiben.

St. Paul's hosted the Convention on Sunday morning;

the Convention Eucharist included anointing of handsfor service, as a sign of the baptismal promise that wasthe theme of convention, "Seek and serve Christ in allpersons."

A very big thank you to all the many people whohelped with hosting, food, welcoming , cleaning, andall the rest!

Designation as a Jubilee Ministry Centerby Kevin G Thew Forrester

St. Paul ' s and St . Stephen ' s of Escanaba each received "designation asa Jubilee Ministry Center" at the Diocesan Convention in October, 2010.The Jubilee Ministry Mandate is "to be a ministry of joint discipleship inChrist with poor and oppressed people , wherever they are found , to meetbasic human needs and to build a just society ." This is at the heart of themission of the church.

St. Paul's received the Jubilee designation because of these ministry pro-grams: Haiti Mission/Laurie's Fund for Haiti's Children, Room at the Inn,and The Healing Arts Center. The Episcopal Church Jubilee Ministryawarded each of these programs with a check of $200.
