Happy new year everyone and I hope you all had a great holiday break to recharge your engines. A great deal has happened over the last couple months since the last newsletter so here is a quick recap. In November, we had two great presentations. The first one was by Joseph Welsh of Leonard Valves who discussed the importance of proper storage of hot water temperature and Legionella’s and an effective way to thermostatically control the water at the fixtures to prevent scalding. The main presentation was by Brad Rockwell of KIUC who presented on the current status of their electrical grid and the different methods they used to select the systems they select. Ten years ago, PV was not even a consideration and now it turns out to be the most cost-effective solution to enhance their electrical grid. In December, we had the Christmas Party coordinated by the Hawaii Chapter Historian Donna Kishi and a tour of the Waiea Chiller Plant and a Pau Hana at Honolulu Beerworks coordinated by Jeannessa Slaughter the refrigeration chair. The Christmas Party had a wonderful turnout of about 75 attendees with great entertainment. About 30 attended the refrigeration tour and saw the wall water heat rejection condenser water system in action. Finally, here is a great new year's resolution for everyone. Attempt to be more sustainable in your daily life. Some easy ones are using your own water bottle or bringing your own shopping bags. Other ones are reducing the amount of meat you consume and consuming more local products. There are many other ones out there so give it a try. Look forward to seeing everyone at the January meeting on the 11th! Mahalo Nui Loa, Kevin Luoma, PE 2017-2018 Hawaii ASHRAE Chapter President President’s Message By Kevin Luoma, P.E. P.O. Aloha All, Hope everyone had a safe and fun holidays. Anyway, each year ASHRAE CTTC sponsors a free webcast. Followings are the information related to this year’s webcast: “Making Energy Efficiency a Reality” April 19, 2018 1:00 – 4:00 PM EDT

This webcast will focus on strategies and policies that dive into deep efficiency goals. Featured ASHRAE speakers will address myths and realities they’ve discovered through real life experiences. Viewers will learn how a practical design approach can help achieve optimum energy performance in commercial and high-rise residential buildings across the globe. With varying climates and economies, one must consider a holistic approach when assessing a building and its systems.

For more information, follow the link below.

https://www.ashrae.org/membership--conferences/webcasts

We encourage everyone to attend the free webcast and benefit from the information that will be provided.

If you are unable to participate in the live webcast, it will be available on demand for two weeks following the broadcast (April 20 – May 4). Registration is necessary to view the on demand program.

Student Activities Report By Diamond Pedro and Jack Mullen

Diamond Pedro & Jack Mullen brought some ASHRAE fun to a 4th grade class at Barbers Point Elementary by discussing engineering and introducing them to the basics of pressure drop through the use of straws, tape, soapy water, and plenty of patience from their teacher. Students blew through straws of various lengths into cups of soapy water, as the lengths of the straws increased the students found it took more energy to move air through the liquid, which didn’t stop them from blowing as many soapy bubbles as possible! Special thanks to Ms. Lorna Duldulao and Barbers Point Elementary. Mahalo Nui Loa!
