By: Kenneth Stevens, Vice President, Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1987, before Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) was used as a detection tool. Proce-dures and treatments have much improved, but it is still a very confusing and frightening new world even when you have the facts.

My group, Georgia Prostate Cancer Coa-lition, shares the viewpoint from prostate cancer survivors, which differs from other institutions that provide support. We give reasons why one should explore alternative

6 healthy tips for fall

treatments and answer questions that the women in men’s lives might have. Some 1,000 men will die in Georgia this year from prostate cancer. Help us all reduce this un-acceptable statistic.

Prostate Cancer Awareness is held at the Norcross Human Services Center and the Centerville Community Center. Please check the class listings for details. Family members and friends are welcome. The best way to fight this disease is to talk about it, and by talking, we gain a better understanding. Pros-tate cancer is a family disease.

1. Take advantage of autumn activities: Autumn group events like pumpkin pick-ing, corn mazes, haunted trails, and build-ing leaf piles are active options that can also be fun bonding experiences for fam-ily and friends.

2. Head to the trails: Fall is one of the most beautiful times of year to be outside. Grab a friend and find some local parks or trails to walk, run, or ride a bike and take in the view of changing leaves.

3. Dress for the weather: When weath-er gets cooler, it can deter people from going outside to work out. This problem can be mediated by wearing wind-shield-ing clothing and dressing in layers. Proper attire and accessories (hats, gloves, etc.) that cut down on bulk but still allow for warmth make outdoor fitness more en-joyable as the chill of fall approaches.

4. Drink water: Stay hydrated even when the temperature cools down. People of-ten feel less thirsty when it is not hot outside, but staying hydrated is just as important in the fall as it is when the

sun is blazing. When fall rolls around, re-member to stay on top of your fluid in-take to help with both exercise recovery and appetite control.

5. Drink tea: Drink more tea to warm up for the cooler temperatures. Green tea and black tea contain antioxidants that help ward off diseases during flu season so you can remain healthy and active as the season shifts.

6. Turn fall chores into a workout: Rak-ing leaves or gardening can burn around 150 calories every 30 minutes. Turn these chores into a game by setting small, achievable goals to help pass time and burn fat.
