Australia has always sent troops to overseas conflicts – from the Boer War at the end of the 19 th Century right up until the current Iraq war even though this country has only been directly threatened once. If the old country was at war so were we! Australian men rushed to join up afraid that the fighting would finish before they had fired a shot. It was also a great adventure – a chance to get away from home and see the world. Men from the local district have also fought and died in conflict. Early Anzac memories include a street march and Anzac sports at the local recreation ground. All shops and businesses were closed and it was a holiday for all. Most towns and cities have some sort of monument or cenotaph to remember the war dead which shows that the effect of war has touched many people. Anzac Day this year will perhaps have a different meaning for me as one of my sons has recently graduated from the Navy Recruit School at HMS Cerberus along with one of his old school friends. My brother has also seen service in Papua New Guinea and East Timor with the Australian Army. The Australian Navy has served in two World Wars, Korea, Malaya, Vietnam and Gulf War and provided humanitarian assistance and disaster relief within Australia and abroad. This month we celebrate Anzac Day on Monday 25th April when Australian and New Zealand troops landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915 and to commemorate all those who have represented this country in military conflict.

Australia has always sent troops to overseas conflicts – from the Boer War at the end of the 19th Century right up until the current Iraq war even though this country has only been directly threatened once.

Remember, whatever your views on war, invasion, imperialism, the war in Iraq etc also recognize the sacrifices

made so that we could live in a free country instead of suffering life as others in Europe and Asia have done. Whoever wins also loses and I believe that Anzac Day should also remind us that war should be avoided if possible. Mi l i tary act ion should not be confused with patriotism!

A dawn service at the Senior Citizens Rooms and also an 11 o’clock service at the Cenotaph wil l be held in Lilydale. For more details phone Sue Watson on 6395 1361.

Mary Walsh Centre News

Once more autumn weather is with us, with cold winds and leaves thick on the ground in many places. Jack Frost is just around the corner waiting to come out and chill us to the bones once more. Flowers in our gardens are scarce at present but the chrysanthemums will soon be coming into bloom. Those of us who have wood fires are preparing for winter months by getting their wood supply in. Debbie, Darian and Jennifer held a stall last week to raise funds for use at the Day Centre and we would like to thank all those who supported us on the day. We raised $150.00.

On the 3rd March we went to Bridport for a trip where we dined at “The Flying Teapot” situated in lovely surroundings. We all enjoyed the meal. We are pleased to welcome Heather Griffith who has kindly offered her services at the centre as a volunteer, lucky us, as Heather plays the piano and sings as well. Tuesday 22nd March saw us off to Aldersgate Village for a special Easter Bonnet Parade and afternoon tea to raise funds for Aldersgate. We enjoyed our purchases from their stall and catching up with a few old friends.

There is no sorrow that He will not share, No cross, no burden, for our hearts to bear Without His help; no care of ours too small To cast on Jesus; let us tell Him all- Lay at His feet the story of our woes And in His sympathy find sweet repose “If God numbers our hairs, Will He not also number our tears. Lilydale CWA Our first meeting for the year is held in February and this year tradition was followed when we got together in the morning to catch up on each others Christmas news, after which we enjoyed a shared lunch with the meeting being held in the afternoon. During the morning we also prepared and packed 10 Birthing packs ready for forwarding to the Pacific Islands. 7 members and 2 visitors attended the March meeting held at the home of Mrs Norma Bardenhagen, Station Rd, Lilydale This meeting was also held in the morning due to several members wishing to attend another function in the afternoon. Roll call for this month took the form of a monetary donation for the Launceston City Mission and a substantial amount was passed over. For several years now we have been meeting in members homes however we have decided that future meetings will be held in the Old Courtroom or if we are having a morning meeting with lunch to share these will take place in the Uniting Church Hall. March birthdays were remembered and plans were made to celebrate the Branch’s 66th birthday in April. Our 2005 AGM will be held on May 4th. New members and visitors are always welcome so if you would like to know more please come along to meeting and see what CWA is all about. Further information can be obtained from either Dorothy Story (Secretary) on 6395 6142, Margaret Hanstein (President) on 6395 1267 or any branch member.

Health Notes from the Lilydale Pharmacy

Health Notes: COLD SORES Cold sores are caused by one of the viruses from the herpes family, known as herpes simplex (HSV). There are two types of HSV infections. HSV-1 usually causes infections on the face, such as cold sores around the lips and nose, whereas HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes. The tingle is the very first sign of the cold sore. This tingling, burning sensation occurs even before the actual cold sore appears. It is at this time that the a n t i v i r a l creams are best. We keep generic ‘aciclovir’ which is most effective. The next stage is the blister. Usually within 24 hours or so of that first feeling of a cold sore coming on, red swollen areas appear and get covered with tiny blisters. These blisters can last for several days. When they burst open and begin to weep, the virus can be easily spread to other places and people. Aciclovir is still effective but the iodine products are also effective at this stage. After the weeping stage the cold sore dries up and forms a scab which generally heals in about a week without scarring. Blistex and Nyal lip ointments are good at this stage. Unfortunately, cold sores come back time after time because, as with all the herpes infections, the virus “hides” in the body’s nerve cells away from the immune system. We are all exposed to the cold sore virus, but not all of us will experience an outbreak of cold sores. More than 4 million Australians – over 20% of our population report having repeated attacks. Cold sores are easily transferred from person to person, and they can be particularly dangerous if caught by babies or people taking medicine that affects their immune system. There may be no permanent cure for cold sores yet, but you can do a lot to prevent them. Dry, burnt lips present the ideal conditions for a cold sore to break out. Regular use of a sunscreen lip balm will prevent many cold sores. Keep some antiviral cold sore cream handy to use as soon as you feel the tingle start. If you have very frequent attacks, perhaps regularly taking Lysine tablets will prevent them. Reducing chocolate and nuts can also help.

Lilydale Taekwondo Club News. Taekwondo Classes are held Monday and Wednesday evenings 6.30-8.00pm at the Lilydale Memorial Hall. Taekwondo is effective self defence, promotes health and fitness and develops concentration and self discipline in children. It is also lots of fun. The club has been operating since 2002 in Lilydale and this year Josh Clarke, Alex James and Terry Hammersley are working hard to be the first students from Lilydale to grade to Black Belt. On May 7th a team from Lilydale will compete against other clubs from around the state in a team challenge event to be held in Longford. Lilydale will be fielding a strong team in the event which comprises sparring matches, high kicking contests and competition in forms (traditional patterns of movement.) New students are always most welcome. For more information, contact Mike and Judy Flanagan on 63444363 or

Karoola Playgroup This month at Playgroup we have had a very busy and exciting time. Making new friends, with numbers in attendance slowly growing. Our excursion to the bike centre was terrific and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The Humble Abode presentation held at the Playgroup was also very successful, with all bonuses benefiting the Playgroup. Tickets to the Hoolie Doolie Concert were organized, and all those who attended had a great time and enjoyed a very exciting and upbeat performance. As part of our Easter Celebrations at the Playgoup, the children made and decorated for themselves, some Easter Bunny Ears and Baskets. Mysteriously, the baskets were later found around the play area filled with chocolate eggs?? Coming up in April, lots of craft work, exploration and fun. Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch We had quite a good attendance despite the clash with the Weed Control Meeting. Annette Waddle was unable to come this meeting but will be at our May meeting as our guest speaker, so come along and hear what she has to say. We are hoping to get another speaker for our April meeting but as yet we haven't heard anything definite. We may know something after the closing date for the Progressive. If we hear anything before the deadline we will notify Jayne and she can add it to the end of this publication. We were hoping to get someone from Community Policing to talk on the Immobilisers for your cars similar to the demonstration held recently in Launceston's Mall. As a result of information received at the Lilydale Police Station during January 2005 a number of searches were conducted in our local area. As a result local police located a quantity of stolen property and drugs that has resulted in a number of people being charged with various offences. Police would like to thank those community members who have been willing to participate in these matters and by their efforts to assist in making our community a safer place. Incident 2. Clean Up Australia—Schools Day The good people of our village can now sleep easy knowing that the 3/4 classes participated in Clean Up Australia—School Day on Friday, 11th March. They picked up many bags of rubbish from the streets of Lilydale, the Village Green and the school grounds. They embraced the concept of community service with vigour and enthusiasm.

2005 Leaders Induction Assembly On Thursday 3rd March Lilydale District School held their 2005 Leaders Induction Assembly. We have a fantastic group of young people participating in a wide range of leadership roles this year. Whether as members of the Student Executive Council, the House Captains, both senior and junior, and the school bus monitors, these students will play significant roles in the life of the school and in promoting the Lilydale learning community. Student leaders whether in primary, middle school or senior years encourage student participation, and by encouraging students to participate more fully in the life of the school, student leaders become constructive agents of change for the school community. The motto on the cover of the assembly program summed up the proceedings; ‘Our students, our future’. Congratulations to Joshua Clarke and Alicia Dornauf for being chosen as Presidents of the Student Representative Council.

VOLUNTEER MENTORS REQUIRED

Following three successful programs, the Co-Pilots community mentoring program will recommence soon in Launceston. The program aims to encourage young people to develop skills and confidence and to find new path-ways to learning and work. Co-Pilots links a young person with an adult volunteer to plan and work together on a two month project that has a community focus.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST are invited from adults (21 years plus) who would like to be mentors for primary or secondary school students in the Co-Pilots program. Mentors from a range of backgrounds are welcome and no previous experience is required. The commitment involves 18 hours free certified training and at least 16 hours contact time with a young person over a two month period.

For details contact the Co-Pilots Coordinator, Launceston City Council, on 6323 3368.

We hope that you had a happy Easter and the Easter bunny visited with lots of chocolate goodies for everyone.

We always find that once Easter is over, the rest of the year just flies by. With only five weeks to MOTHER’S DAY, now is the time to utilize the “no deposit lay-by” system at the Lilydale Post Office. Unfortunately time and time again, we have customers who come back to purchase that special something only to find that it has been sold. So don’t miss out, if you see a gift for that someone special in your life, just ask the friendly staff to put it away for you.

We have a new selection of lovely gifts for Mum and have been working hard over the Easter break to display them throughout the Lilydale Post Office. From exquisite Glass/wire photo frames, bowls & trinket boxes, musical pianos, farmyard egg timers, beautiful glass bowls and platters to Bear waterballs, the list is endless.

With such inexpensive items, it is a golden opportunity to really say “I Love You” to your Mum this MOTHER’S DAY. If you require assistance to select a gift just ask the staff at the Post Office who will readily help you make a selection. SEE YOU THERE!!!!!

Lilydale History Group

Over the years increasing numbers of people have become interested in tracing their origins and finding out more about their own Family Tree and where they came from.

Recently two of our members have been able to help mainland residents whose ancestors at once time lived in the Northeast of our beautiful state.

Through the Internet we were asked for information about a branch of the Proctor family who lived in the area, and after some careful research Tammy was able to ascertain that the family in question had in fact lived at Lefroy and they were buried in the Pipers River cemetery. This family is not to be mistaken for the Proctors who lived Doaks Rd Lilydale, although it’s entirely possible they were related The lady who requested this information lives in Victoria and is now planning a trip to Tasmania to visit the region.

Helen was able to help a visitor to the area find family

Page 9: HE ILYDALE · 2005-04-08 · herpes family, known as herpes simplex (HSV). There are two types of HSV infections. HSV-1 usually causes infections on the face, such as cold sores around

graves in the Lilydale cemetery. Four of the members of the Doak family who once lived in Lilydale are buried there together. The family resided at a property named “Glen Doone” and the visitor was also looking for it’s location. During a conversation with a Doak’s Road resident Helen mentioned the name of this property and the resident said that was the place where she has lived for many years. Arrangements were made and a few days later Helen took the visitor to view the property and meet the present owner.

These are just two examples of how we are able to help people research their own Family Tree. The members of the History Group are always looking for more Historic facts and ways to preserve our rich and often colourful past. If you would like to know more or maybe join our Group we would love to hear from you. We meet on the third Friday of the month in the Old Courtroom on the Main Rd at 8.00pm in the Summer months and 7.30pm in Winter. Contact phone numbers for the Group include Helen on 6395 2060 anytime or Tammy on 6395 6278 of an evening.

Lilydale Football Club

This may be the Club’s last report in the Progressive for the time being. The Club has not been able to attract more Volunteer helpers or Com-mittee people so it becomes a case of rationalisation, the people who are left must give

their priorities where they can be best used to en-sure the Club can exist. Has anyone thought what Lilydale would be like without a Football Club, Cricket and badminton disappeared without much effort to keep them going. With an ageing Committee we have been asking people to consider the future for a number of years, the time has come to stop thinking and act. Ring Sue on 6395 1361 or come to the ground on Tuesdays or Thursdays, there is nearly always someone there from before 4.00 pm until late. The Club’s priorities are: • Administration • Financial • Ground Maintenance

Teams & Players The NEFU has a roster at last, two weeks after the fate of St Marys was decided, Ringarooma wobbled and it looked as thought what was to be an eight Club competition would be reduced to six Clubs, Ringarooma will continue but will not be fielding a Reserves side, this year, this means a later start for the Junior teams.

The normal game times are: 9.30 am Under 13’s and Under 10’s 10.30 am Under 16’s 12.10 pm Reserves 2.00 pm Seniors

It is expected that all grades, excepting Seniors, will start one game later when playing Ringarooma, with less rush it may be possible to have a longer break between games.

The Club also has to find time to work some matters out with the Council, we have unanswered correspondence going back to 1998 and an ideal situation would be to put everything on the table and clear it all up at the same time. In this regards the Club would like to hear from anyone who has a matter that they would like raised. The serious men with their clipboards have us intrigued, our contacts at the Council know nothing about them, or why they were there but their comment about the Clubrooms not belonging to the Council was wrong, the Clubrooms are on Council Land. This brings forward a need to find out just what is on the card and how correct the records are. This is probably a matter more for the Recreation Ground Committee, than the Football Club, but Sue is secretary of both and this will ensure that your enquiries or advice get to the right place.
