I n the classic ’70s television series Welcome Back, Kotter – where it all began for a doe-eyed, snake-hipped John Travolta – the public-school

Sweathogs, as they were called, had a series of go-to insults for each other.

“Oh, yeah?”, Epstein or Vinnie or Horshack would taunt. “OK – your sister.” Then the inevitable comeback. “Yeah? Well – your mother.”

It’s the old maternal insult, the “yo mama” line – the tried-and-true offending of the family honour, and it goes back to at least Greek tragedy and Shakespeare.

In Titus Andronicus:

Demetrius: “Villain, what hast thou done?”Aaron: “That which thou canst not undo.”Chiron: “Thou hast undone our mother.”Aaron: “Villain, I have done thy mother.”

I doubt that the language of the Western Bulldogs’ Will Minson was quite as crisp as Shakespeare when he tossed his “yo mama” insult at Port Adelaide’s Danyle Pearce, but the response has been as sharp as a rapier. Minson has tearfully apologised, promised never to sledge again and has been stood down for one game.

No one knows quite what he said – he disputes what has been reported – but the AFL acted swiftly in support

of its anti-discrimination policy. I should be pleased that the AFL did. I should continue to stay in the battle to wipe out misogynistic, racist or offensive language on the field, but I have to admit that I just don’t care. If these guys want to sledge each other, what do I care how they do it? I know that they will continue to do

so, and their choice of language is irrelevant to me because I expect nothing from footballers when

it comes to discretion of language, or care for discrimination.

Others have higher expectations, but they are possibly also those who talk of footballers as role models and leadership figures – a

foolish trust, it seems to me, when a Jimmy Stynes comes along only once in a generation.

I don’t believe changing the way footballers insult each other will achieve anything. The real way to change entrenched attitudes of racism and sexism is to change the world these blokes operate in, and that’s by populating it with people of colour and with women. They’ll get it, and they’ll change, when their daughters play footy, and when their sister runs on to the field as captain of the team, when a woman chairs a club, anchors a commentary team. They’ll get it, and they’ll change, when the trainer, physio, PR manager and full-forward are indigenous.

So while language matters, what really matters most

to me is change in numbers, and that’s the change I am increasingly agitated at seeing move so slowly.

I recall interviewing Australia’s first female professional pilot, Deborah Wardley, many years ago – the woman whom Ansett took to the High Court in order to prevent her flying.

She told of the day that a steward informed her there was a man on board who didn’t want his plane flown by a woman and demanded to be allowed off. Busy with her preflight routine, she asked for the man to be brought to her. As she took her co-pilot through their detailed, technical prep, she realised he was standing behind her. With more than a little irritation, she turned around asked him what his problem was. She smiled as she recalled the bloke, goggle-eyed at the job she was doing, stammered “Nothing, nothing at all …” and tottered back to his seat.

No one knows what language this man might have used to talk about the “girly” who flew his plane that day, and maybe impressionable ears were tuned in as he indulged his sexist worldview.

But who cares? That day a woman got him off the ground and safely back down again, so tell that to your mama. \

investment piece; and Sewell is tipping a “big comeback for flats”.

“Nobody, no country, is leading the world in fashion. People take elements from every country,” Sewell says.

“We take elements from every country.“I can see certain influences from the UK here. People

have got into layering here, and that’s quite British.“I love the British for their eccentric fashion. New

York is pure polish. Australia for me represents freedom, great commercial products and great brands than can sell all over the world. There’s Zimmermann … and Lisa Gorman is sustaining an amazing business with great products that sell worldwide.

“I like and appreciate Paris for giving us serious fashion, but being an Aussie – and I feel 100 per cent Australian – I love what Australian designers do.

“I’ve lived in London for 17 years, but I feel I’m just an Aussie living in London.”

Sewell is in a chair having make-up and hair done for a photography shoot and filming before lunch with Melbourne’s fashion elite at Cutler & Co in Fitzroy.

She’s engaging, chatty and utterly down to earth.

Her jewellery is minimal, elegant – a silver Chanel watch and a whopper of an engagement ring made from rose-cut diamonds.

Sewell was never a model, but can walk the walk and knows how to strike a pose with the handful of clothes she has brought to the studio – a grey blazer, T-shirt, striped top, blue pants, black trousers and a little black dress that looks as though it could have come straight from Grace Kelly’s wardrobe.

The daughter of hairdresser parents of Lebanese background, Sewell grew up Yasmin Abdallah in the Sydney suburb of Maroubra. She left school at 15, much to the angst of her parents, who wanted their daughter to complete her education, and admits to “being a little bit lost”.

She credits Sydney real-estate guru John McGrath with giving her the break that started her career.

“He called up my school looking for someone he could train,” Sewell says. “What John did was make me see what motivation was. I was right there with him as his PA when the company was only 20 people and it was kind of life changing, but after a couple of years I realised I didn’t want to be in the corporate environment. I wanted to do fashion, but no one would employ me because I came from real estate.”

Aged 20, Sewell moved to London. Work in fashion soon followed, although she is far from an overnight success. A boutique called Yasmin Cho, named after a Chinese family she loved, was her first taste of retail. Eventually she landed the plum job at Browns before starting her own consultancy.

Sewell, who was previously married to British actor Rufus Sewell, says she now wants to lead a

cover story

s ome day your prints will come. Large and splashy, delicate or demure, prints are on the radar for spring and summer. So says style guru, retail consultant and trend forecaster Yasmin Sewell.

“Australian designers are embracing prints. Australians have always been good with prints and colour. Now it’s a global trend and it is for everyone,” says Sewell.

If the name Yasmin Sewell doesn’t ring a bell at the moment, it soon will.

Her impressive CV includes 18 years in British fashion, including as a buyer for Browns, once a small London boutique but now a fashion destination in its own right.

She is the creative consultant credited with bringing a stable of on trend designers to the venerated British department store Liberty of London, a fashion blogger for Vogue UK and the director of her own retail consultancy based in London’s trendy Shoreditch with clients in Europe and Asia.

She has twice been a judge of the British Fashion Awards. In January Sewell was named Britain’s Young Australian of the Year, sharing the stage with Barry Humphries.

When she finished the Liberty makeover, it cemented her reputation. Now Sewell is overseeing the overhaul of one of South Korea’s oldest department stores in Seoul.

“I work with a whole bunch of clients and brands from young designers to massive brands. We work in a bespoke way with every client,” she says.

“My history comes from buying and retail, and I use that to give a store an overhaul and to predict what women will want to wear. It is a little bit innate but also comes from experience.

“Liberty is the one people talk about the most, but because I am a consultant I’m more in the background.

“It took a year to do the complete overhaul of Liberty. We redesigned the four floors, brought in 90 new collections and then relaunched it and continued the development.”

For Sewell that included shining a light on Liberty’s famous tana lawn fabric and giving it a new twist by getting French fashion house Hermes to create a signature scarf using the print.

Sewell is in Melbourne for the day in her role as a partner with the Westfield Group. Bringing fashion into the digital age, her interviews with designers such as Nicky Zimmermann and the Sarah-Jane Clarke and Heidi Middleton from Sass & Bide will give shoppers a preview of the spring/summer 2012-13 collections.

She will also take to the streets to see how Australian shoppers wear and interpret global fashion trends and make them their own.

“In this day and age you need to service your clients. You have to do more than have shops with clothes on rails. You have to look after people. Even in London, now that I’ve got a baby I love going to Westfield for the convenience.

“Customers are so savvy now; they want to know what is happening right away. Women of all ages can embrace print – it all depends what kind of print. It can be a beautiful dress, a shirt, even a scarf.”

Tailoring and ladylike dressing is still “very nice”; “a lovely blazer that suits your body shape” is another top

“balanced life”.“I am very against working 18 hours a day. I’ve done

that in a couple of jobs and had to leave. I am very much the opposite.

“I’ve done lots of jobs, but now I’m 36 I don’t believe in killing myself for work. I want to lead a life where I’m creating things and having a balanced life.”

According to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures, retail turnover fell 0.2 per cent in April. However, clothing footwear and personal accessory retailing and department stores sales rose by 0.3 per cent.

Sewell, in her role with Westfield, is clearly hoping some of that money will find its way to the 437 retailers, including luxury stores such as Zimmermann, Sass & Bide and Arthur Galan at Westfield Doncaster.

The shopping centre – formerly Doncaster Shoppingtown – was the first expansion out of Sydney for the Lowy family back in 1969. According to shareholder activist and Manningham councillor Stephen Mayne, Westfield Doncaster is a brilliant design, targeting upmarket segments in a relatively wealthy area.

“Having both Myer and David Jones is vital. Being the first expansion outside New South Wales, it has always been special for Westfield founder Frank Lowy and the $600-million redevelopment in 2008 got special treatment where Doncaster was transformed at the time into one of four signature Westfields in the world, along with Bondi Junction, San Francisco and London,” Mayne says.

“Westfield Doncaster also benefits from having the Apple store, which has overtaken David Jones to become the second-biggest sales generator after Myer, despite being only 390 square metres.

“The Melbourne CBD suffers from not having an Apple store equivalent to the iconic Sydney CBD store, which does close to $300 million a year. Apple’s Doncaster store is doing a roaring $50 million a year in sales, out of a total of $812 million last year,” says Mayne.

“The location on the key Doncaster Road- Williamsons Road intersection in Doncaster is also important, along with the magnificent views. It is also streets ahead of Eastland, Greensborough and Northland for the quality of what it offers, yet you don’t get lost like in Chadstone.”

Westfield Doncaster has 14.4 million customer vists a year, with many customers coming from beyond a 15-kilometre radius.

As for fashion forecasts, brides can take note that Sewell wore a grey lace gown she helped design for her wedding in January in Sorrento to Rosebud boy Kyle Robinson. Their baby Knox Rocket Robinson, looked smart in white T-shirt and oversized bow tie in the arms of Sewell’s mother, who took her daughter’s advice and wore a vibrant print off-the-shoulder dress. \

T he first tiny wrinkle we see, we tend to stare at it, stretch and analyse it from various angles and in different light. Wrinkles are inevitable.

Think of them as a life well lived. Would you rather live life without laugh lines and joy?

People I know, and I am sure you know a few, often gaze into a mirror for hours trying to detect the slightest crease around the eye area. They start fussing about it when they do find one. We crease around the eyes when we laugh, frown, get angry or worried – it is just a part of life. The skin around the eye thins as we age, and this tends to contribute to a lot of the “troubles” such as puffiness, dark circles around the eyes, dryness and the ubiquitous lines.

We cannot turn back the clock but we can control the way we age. I am not referring to drastic changes, just manageable changes that can be tackled by acceptance and a good lifestyle.

I have written countless times that if we are aware of the composition of a product we will know how the various ingredients work, and eye creams are no different. That knowledge can help you make the right choice of a cream to target your concern. \

Neuropeptides work to energise and tone skin; they also stimulate collagen and elastin production. The most effective and readily available product on the market is Dr NV Perricone’s patented formulation. Perricone, who has published several articles on neuropeptides, explains that, unlike ordinary peptides, neuropeptides are “a specific kind of complex peptide containing up to 30 or 40 different amino acids. Besides stimulating collagen and elastin, they quickly repair wrinkles and increase circulation for a more radiant skin”. Neuropeptides are also a great alternative for those with super-sensitive skin who cannot use retinol.

Hyaluronic acid & ceramides

If you want your lines plumped and dulled, you cannot go pass hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate). It is has the ability to hold a thousand times its weight in water and is able to draw moisture from the air. It is also a wonderful lubricant. Another moisture retainer is ceramides.Dr Jeannette Graf in her book Stop Aging and Start Living says that ceramides are essential to help maintain the integrity of the skin’s barrier layer and maintain its hydration.

retinol

Otherwise known as pure and active vitamin A, retinol is one of the few well-documented ingredients that has a small enough molecular structure to penetrate the skin to work to repair collagen and elastin in the lower layers. It is also only effective in large concentrations and, as a controlled drug, needs to be prescribed by a medical practitioner. It can be moderately effective in smaller concentrations, too. Always patch-test products containing retinol. It can make skin more sun-sensitive and drying. My advice is to apply creams with retinol just before bedtime.

develOping Our city \ The former Northcote Theatre will soon be 100 years old and there are big-screen plans to celebrate, writes ANDRA JACKSON.

Great entertainer:the northcote theatre will celebrate its centenary with a month-long program.(Supplied)

“We want

to bring the theatre back to its glorious

past.”

Back in 1912, a ripple of excitement ran through Melbourne’s inner suburbs when the Northcote Theatre opened its doors. About 1000 patrons

crowded into what was then Melbourne’s newest cinema on opening night, June 27, 1912.

In the early 20th century, the cinema, then in its infancy, was Melbourne’s most popular entertainment.

The new theatre was built on the back of Melbourne’s boom years. It was operated by the Northcote Picture Theatre Company.

Situated at 216 High Street, on the corner of High and Bastings streets, it dominated the streetscape. It was designed by local architect Edward Twentyman jnr, and featured a balcony and dress circle, stalls, adaptable stage for live performances … and its own generator.

At that time, Northcote was an up-and-coming entertainment quarter and drew patrons from other suburbs.

As well as screening silent films, the theatre was a popular venue for vaudeville, burlesque shows and dances, and was also the venue of the annual mayoral ball.

It was taken over by the Hoyts chain and continued operating as a cinema until it closed its doors in 1960. Attendances had waned as the area lost its allure as an entertainment precinct.

The theatre later reopened as a dance studio. In one of its many incarnations, it was also an Italian hall. In recent years it has been renovated and again used for balls and weddings, and most recently, as a contemporary music venue with acts such as singer Mick Thomas.

Now the public is about to have the opportunity to step back in time and experience the theatre as it was 100 years ago.

To mark the centenary, the theatre’s current owners are staging a month-long celebration that includes screening films again.

“We want to bring the theatre back to its glorious past,” manager Aron Tzimas said. His father, George, purchased the ailing venue 15 years ago and restored it.

“We are passionate about this building,” he said. They renamed it the Regal Ballroom, but for the centenary celebrations they have given it back its original name, the Northcote Theatre.

Tzimas said that from time to time people passing by come into the theatre to have a look around and reminisce about having been to a dance or holding their wedding reception there. He is hoping the celebrations will attract them back.

The celebrations include a photographic display of the theatre in its glory days.

Tzimas also plans to have a photograph taken of the audience in the stalls to replicate an iconic photograph that captured the crowd attending the theatre’s 1912 opening.

The National Trust lists the building as significant to Melbourne for its historical, cultural and architectural values.

It describes it as “the oldest purpose-built cinema surviving largely intact in Melbourne” and

says the building’s façade is notable for being what became a typical cinema design of classical-derived and flat-applied decoration with a central arch as a main focus.

The Trust also considers the theatre important for its association with

Robert McLeish, who operated several cinemas in Melbourne

and was known as “the father of the motion-picture industry in Victoria”.

Research conducted at the Darebin library shows another connection with Melbourne’s cultural history: while still running as a cinema, the venue was chosen

as a setting for the Australian film Night Club, in 1952.A concert on Wednesday, June 27, marks the

cinema’s 1912 opening night. Performing is American swamp-rock super group Lil Band O’ Gold. Other music acts booked for the celebrations in July include Evan and the Fauves and Dave Graney.

A week of films will screen from July 16 on a blown-up screen. It will be launched with a matinee screening of the Oscar-winning 1988 Italian film Cinema Paradiso.

Tzimas says the choice is apt because the film is about a small boy who works in a local cinema.

In another homage to the building’s past, The Godfather will be shown in the evening. “It is a throwback to the building’s Italian connection when in the ’70s and ’80s it was known as Italia Hall,” Tzimas says.

The theatre’s centenary falls at a time when the fortunes of Northcote (population about 22,000) have come full circle.

With a notable population of artists and musicians – attracted by its previously cheaper rents and housing prices – it is once again a thriving entertainment hub that attracts people from across Melbourne.

They are drawn to its bars and award-winning restaurants, its music venues, such as 303 and the Northcote Social Club, and its restored art-deco cinema, the Westgarth Palace.

This transformation has brought gentrification to the once predominantly working-class suburb.

The median price of a house in Northcote has risen from $557,708 in 2006 to $887,750 last month, according to the industry. \

conservatory. There is a nearby powder room, and a back entrance to the kitchen is ideal for caterers.

The original footprint of the house includes three bedrooms, one with en suite, an additional bathroom with bath and separate toilet, and a good-sized study that looks out to the rear verandah. It is draped in an tangled, age-old vine. The double garage can be reached from this verandah. The main bedroom is positioned far away at the other end of the house. It has a large dressing room, en suite with twin vanities, and glass sliding doors leading to that beautiful deck.

The gardens that surround the house are typically native, although some exotics and fruit trees add seasonal splashes of colour. Patches of lawn and moss provide ample space for kids to play.

Inside and out, there is much to love about this property. The next family to move into No.28 will be lucky indeed, not in the least for seizing this rare chance to call Sweeneys Lane home. \

Combining the old with the new has rarely been done so obviously, or with such success. For most major renovations of period properties, the façade is retained, leaving any contemporary flair concealed

out the back. But here, quaint clinkers of the original façade contrast with bold industrial-style additions either side. In doing so, the builder was able to expand the living space of this once-modest cottage to dimensions more in tune with the needs of a modern family. It now has three bedrooms, all positioned around the entrance. The main bedroom is instantly impressive with its walk-in wardrobe, side courtyard and en suite with twin vanities.

Don’t be put off by the Karingal Road address. This property is set so far down the hill from the Eltham-Greensborough artery that the traffic seems a world away. Four years ago, this townhouse was built on

a subdivision abutting a reserve at the rear. The trees and the hidden position add to the peace quiet. Inside, jarrah floorboards add elegance and warmth to the living areas. The kitchen is an impressive combination of CaesarStone benches and stainless steel appliances. And outside, a covered deck surrounds an eight-person Jacuzzi. Clearly, the property was built with entertaining in mind. There is a second and much larger deck off the living hub. Guests can stay in two of the downstairs bedrooms, which share a contemporary bathroom with separate toilet. Upstairs is the parents’ retreat. A loft-style study introduces the bedroom, which has an en suite, walk-in wardrobe and park views. The property includes a one-car garage and plenty of additional parking at the side of the house. \ LIAM CARTER

This three-bedroom, one-bathroom property, on the Jennings Estate, is moments from Bundoora Square, La Trobe University and the tram line.

A tiled area at the entrance connects to the carpeted lounge, where a fireplace has been transformed with a white mantelpiece. The kitchen and meals area are nearby and have polished timber floors. French doors lead to the backyard, where there’s a paved dining area covered by Perspex.

The main bedroom is near the hub of the house. It has pale-lemon walls and built-in wardrobes. Another bedroom has light-blue walls and built-in wardrobes, while the third bedroom follows a sea-green palette.

All three bedrooms share the family bathroom, which has a white bathtub and features a patterned, tiled border.

Other features include block-out blinds, evaporative cooling and ducted heating. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA

The other two bedrooms certainly do not miss out on any of the luxury. The family bathroom has been stylishly fitted with a standalone bath, wrap-around mirrors and funky suspended light fittings. The nearby living hub has high ceilings and gleaming timber boards. A wall of glass doors leads to a side deck overlooking manicured tank-fed gardens. There is an additional north-facing courtyard off the lounge. In a clear pitch to style-savvy Ivanhoe buyers, the kitchen has a mirrored splashback, CaesarStone benches and Smeg appliances, including a 900mm oven. To live in Kangaroo Ground’s Bend of Islands is akin to living in a national park. But instead of hiking in with your tent, you can set up camp in this gorgeous four-bedroom residence perched high on the

hillside of this 4.1-hectare bush block. The property forms part of the 634-hectare Bend of Islands environmental living zone, which is a protected residential conservation area. The bushland is pristine and flush with native flora and fauna, including 60 varieties of native orchid and rare species such as the spotted quail-thrush, and the brush-tailed phascogale. Development is obviously limited and existing houses are highly prized. This property is no exception. Built in 1990, the house has three distinct living areas spread across 320 square metres of living space. The front lounge and dining rooms are divided by a central Coonara fireplace with brick surrounds. Another heater adds warmth and character to the nearby family hub, but you cannot ignore the views from the vaulted floor-to-ceiling windows. It’s just unspoilt bush as far as the eye can see. The layers of hills, whether cloaked in mist on a winter’s morning or set against a late summer sunset, are simply stunning. The nearby rumpus room shares these views, or you can soak them up from out on the manicured lawns surrounding the house. \ LIAM CARTER

Apartment living is more common in St Kilda Road than Ivanhoe. But not everyone who wants the lock-up-and-leave convenience of an apartment has to high-tail it to the city. This property is ideal for

downsizers, empty nesters or young couples who want to stay put in leafy riverside Ivanhoe. This immaculately presented three-bedroom apartment is the jewel in the crown of this stylish six-year-old development, which is close to shops. It has a large wrap-around front verandah taking in views out west to Northcote and south to the city. Beyond the rooftops of Alphington, you can see the Rialto Towers. The main living hub has extra-high ceilings and is connected to the verandah through a series of glass double doors. Needless to say, there is no shortage of natural light. The kitchen is all modern chic with granite benches and stainless steel appliances. Nearby, a spiral staircase leads up to the main bedroom, which has charming vaulted ceilings, an en suite and access to roof storage. The other two bedrooms, main bathroom, and European laundry are downstairs by the entrance. \ LIAM CARTER

The sounds of chirping birds dominate the surrounds of No.13 – but the ringing school bell reminds you that you are right in the heart of Eltham North. Conveniently located close to the Eltham township, this

four-bedroom house offers a revamped interior. The neutral colour scheme, walls without cornices and polished timber floors heighten the contemporary feel. The formal lounge/dining area has chocolate-coloured Roman blinds and looks out to the manicured front garden. The kitchen is nearby and has granite benchtops. It overlooks the meals and family area. The family area also has doors that lead to the large outdoor area, which is under cover and provides plenty of room to entertain. Stacked-stone walls divide the dining area and the storage space alongside the house. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and an updated en suite. Two other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a renovated bathroom with a double vanity and frameless glass shower. A fourth bedroom has been set up as a study. Ample lawn space also means the kids have plenty of room to play. \ BIANCA VILLAROSA
