It’s dangerous. First you text a friend that there is simply the most adorable video on the internet of, say, a cat being caught in the act of barking; then you

consider linking it to your Facebook page; then before you know it, you’ve Tweeted it and, hey presto, you’ve become One of Those People.

One of those who send a cute-dog-a-day – one of those people who justify the widespread contempt that the social network phenomenon is largely the province of pornographers, 9/11 deniers and women sitting at home in their dressing-gowns surrounded by their five cats (none of which are cute).

I do not want to become one of those people, and so I will NOT provide a link here to the swooningly cute video of that French baby telling her astonishing story of crocodiles and “’ippopot”. (But for heaven’s sake Google it, it’s unforgettable.) But I fear I am on my way.

I have written here before of my dismay at turning into a dog person, and now, dear friends, the transition is complete. On a recent dash to the airport, as my husband bundled my bags into the car, I couldn’t bear the thought of being dropped off without saying

a proper goodbye, so I bundled the dog in too, and had a nice chat with him on the way out. My husband was disbelieving at this; the kids think it’s hilarious.

Going from a dog-hair phobic to someone who now can’t have the animal sleep outside during these cold, cold nights, they are now taking bets on how long it’ll be before the dog gets to sleep in our room, on our bed. (They are wrong: as a clothes horse, that is one step too far. The shoes must be left in peace.)

But I am amazed, simply amazed, at how these creatures get under your skin. Residual elements

of the old me remain, such that I strongly empathise with the anguished emails I’ve been receiving through the live-animal export crisis, outraged that the country can be so appalled at the treatment of shiploads of cattle

but not boatloads of desperate asylum seekers. The hierarchical, and somewhat Darwinian,

distinction that I’ve always made between animals and humans still remains. So imagine my chagrin when I find myself, day after day, sitting at the vet’s while my dog, lame and limping, is painstakingly treated by the kind of caring and devoted professional that I know so

many Australians have to wait for weeks, if not months, to see.

If my dog gets a bad tooth, he’ll be seen immediately. Yes, I’ll be paying, but the system that exists for him appears far more accommodating than the one that pensioners around the country endure as their teeth and gums rot and the illnesses associated with those conditions set in. If I hear one more politician bang on about the desperate need for an efficient national dental health system, I’ll sic my dog on them. (He will, of course, lick them to death.)

So now, having made that leap, I can no longer consider a sweet, dumb animal a second-class citizen. My sister, who as a toddler was bringing home broken birds and hoping to mend them, is delighted. Peter Singer might even be pleased ... if I could only renounce my status as a carnivore, too. In fact, those little baa-lambs I wrote about the other week really are terribly cute, aren’t they?

Oh good grief, is it a life of kale and carrots for me? \

Twenty years after playing the villainous oil baron J.R. Ewing, Larry Hagman is putting on the Stetson again as Dallas returns to the screen. PETER WILMOTH spoke with the actor on the eve of his 80th birthday.

WHO can forget those bloodshot eyes and that evil smirk from under that massive Stetson? (Clive James said the band around his hat resembled a bunch of crushed budgerigars.) Or that ruthless, nasal

delivery, and the clipped, arrogant put-downs (“ at Cli Barnes. Just keeps gettin’ dumber and dumber every day.”)? J.R. Ewing was one of television’s greatest and most believable villains, which explains why in 1980 more than 41 million US households tuned in to see who had shot him.

And now Larry Hagman is back, saddling up as J.R. again, working alongside Patrick Du y (who played J.R.’s good-natured brother, Bobby) and Linda Gray (who played J.R.’s long-su ering wife, Sue Ellen).

“We just nished lming the pilot three weeks ago, and if everything goes well we start shooting in October,” Hagman tells me on the phone from Sydney. “It’s wonderful. I’ll be working at the age of 80, which I think is pretty funny.”

He hasn’t been told what the scriptwriters have in store for the man who ruled the Ewings of Southfork. “I don’t know, but the emphasis is going to be on Bobby’s son and my son and their wives or girlfriends. Hopefully that’ll catch on and I’ll just be able to come in and steal a few scenes and walk o again.”

Steal a few scenes is right. From 1978 to 1991 Hagman fairly chewed up the scenery as J.R., TV’s most alpha of alpha males, scotch in hand, girlfriend sequestered somewhere in downtown Dallas, the poor Sue Ellen putting up with her husband’s scheming, conniving ways, a self-satis ed winner’s grin under the shadow of that ever-present cowboy hat.

For an actor, J.R. was gold and Hagman has great memories. He was o en spoken to as though he were J.R. “Yes, of course, but they always liked that character,” he says of fans. “He was the guy you loved to hate. I don’t know why, but people enjoyed that.”

At the peak of the show’s popularity Hagman visited Romania. “We were walking down the street and this guy came up, around 65, and he was crying and he said, ‘J.R., you have saved our country. Ceausescu was our so-called leader, he put on Dallas to show the corruption of the American government and the American way of life’, and the people in Romania liked it so much they took him out and shot him 500 times. And his wife. Apparently it was true, it was on TV, and people saw what they’d been missing and wondered why, and so there was a revolution.”

No wonder the people of Romania loved Dallas, because most of the rest of the world did too. Who can forget Sue Ellen and her drinking problem, little blonde Lucy and her distinct lack of neck, the beautiful Pamela

Barnes, the good, gentle, handsome Bobby, the patrician Jock and the civilising in uence of Miss Ellie. And, of course, the hapless Cli Barnes, so o en the butt of J.R.’s venom?

And, speaking of forgetting, what about the laugh-out-loud moment where it was revealed that Bobby hadn’t really been killed in a car crash and that, as he emerged from the shower, we learnt that all of season eight had been just a dream? It was the show’s way of bringing Bobby back into the story, at Hagman’s urging (Patrick Du y had quit).

No matter that the strings of credibility were strained to breaking point. e show was a phenomenon and Hagman loved it all, especially inhabiting the juiciest role. ey say the devil gets the best lines – he must have enjoyed delivering some of those J.R. zingers. “Well of course,” he says. “ e bad guy has more fun.”

It’s hard to convey now how big Dallas was. e hysteria over the episode in which J.R. was shot – several di erent scenarios were lmed so the secret wouldn’t leak from the cast and crew – was watched by millions around the world and made the cover of Time. I asked Hagman how all that attention changed him as a person. “I don’t think it changed me,” he says. “I’ve been in the business 60 years now. I don’t think it changed me a hell of a lot.”

He has kept in touch with the cast. “Patrick Du y and

I go hunting and shing quite o en and Linda Gray and I have lunch or dinner at least twice a month.”

Of course, the other role for which Hagman will always be remembered with a ection was as Captain (later Major) Anthony Nelson, an astronaut who “discovers” a 2000-year-old genie called Jeannie (played by Barbara Eden).

e show immortalised Eden and Hagman, and its success stemmed from the obvious chemistry between the actors, not to mention the sexual tension between them (would they or wouldn’t they?). ey got married in the end, which in some way was the “jumping the shark” moment – Hollywood code for the moment when it all gets a bit silly.

I Dream of Jeannie was a provocative show, and not just because of Eden’s revealing pink genie out t and the then-shocking decision to reveal her belly button, but also Jeannie’s o -repeated cry of “Yes master!”, which didn’t go down well among many in the midst of the burgeoning feminist revolution.

Still, it was hilarious fun, with Doctor Bellows at the NASA base where Nelson worked constantly suspicious of the domestic set-up between Tony and Jeannie, Tony’s friend Roger Healey wondering why Tony didn’t get Jeannie to blink him the world, and Jeannie’s evil twin sister, played by Eden in a black wig. As kids, we did a lot of suspending of disbelief.

Hagman was recently in Sydney for the Supanova Pop Culture Expo where he appeared with his fellow I Dream of Jeannie actors Eden and Bill Daily, who played Healey. What are Hagman’s memories of the show? “ ey were wonderful,” he says. “ ey still are. We’re still on the air a er 46 years. It’s still a very amusing show. I catch it every now and again when I’m sur ng the web.” What was the show’s secret? “Barbara Eden.”

A er Jeannie, Hagman and Eden have acted in plays together and appeared at expos. Eden played J.R.’s conniving former girlfriend in an episode of Dallas. But their relationship might have been tested with the release of Eden’s autobiography Jeannie Out of the Bottle, which painted Hagman as a volatile presence on the set, causing mayhem, clashing with guest stars including Sammy Davis Jr., and starting “every day at the studio by drinking vast quantities of Champagne”.

Eden writes: “ is may be one of the biggest understatements ever made, but for Larry Hagman, the I Dream of Jeannie years were not happy ones. To this day I believe he much prefers to be remembered for his role as J.R. Ewing in Dallas rather than for his role as Major Tony Nelson in I Dream of Jeannie. To be fair to Larry, he wasn’t the cause of every single drama out of all the many that unfolded on the (set).”

She writes that Hagman infuriated Sammy Davis Jr. when the Las Vegas star was guesting on Jeannie.

“If I ever see that ---- again, I’ll kill him,” she quotes him as saying. “How in the hell do you work with this guy, Barbara?”

Hagman says of his portrayal in the book: “Well, I was very surprised at the whole thing, to tell you the truth.” Was it true he was volatile? “No, no,” he says. “Maybe that’s the way she saw it. But I don’t think so. Maybe the girl she was writing with wanted to sell some books or something, I don’t know. I don’t hold any grudges. I don’t care. I’m old enough and rich enough

not to let anything like that bother me.”Hagman was born in 1931 in Fort Worth, Texas, the

son of Mary Martin, the Broadway actress and lm star, and Benjamin Hagman. A er a divorce, Martin moved to New York to pursue her Broadway career and Hagman went to live with his grandmother in California until he was 12.

“I then went to live with my mother for a couple of years, which was a disaster. I didn’t get on with my stepfather very well.” He went back to Texas to live with his father and worked occasionally as a ranch hand.

Growing up the son of a famous actress was a strong in uence in his own move into showbusiness. “I lived with my father and I learnt the more manual labour you did the less you got paid, so I decided

to become an actor when I was digging ditches and baling hay.”

Was it ever frustrating to be known so well for the two TV shows? “No, I love it. Are you kidding? It’s wonderful.” Was typecasting ever a worry for Hagman a er playing such a strong role as J.R.? “You know, it never has been. I recently did about ve episodes of Nip/Tuck and I did Desperate Housewives.”

He loves meeting fans of the shows. “Tons of fun. Dallas is still on in many countries, including America, and Jeannie is still on here (Australia), I understand.”

He has two children, Heidi, 53, and Preston, 49. “And I have ve grandchildren. All girls.” Does he enjoy the grandfather role? “Oh yes, it’s wonderful.” Are they familiar with J.R. and Tony Nelson? “Oh yeah. I’ve given them all the Dallases and the DVDs of Jeannie and all that stu .”

It was one of his granddaughters who encouraged him to take the role in Desperate Housewives. “I said I’d got an o er to do this show Desperate Housewives. I’d never seen it before, so I watched it with her and it was an interesting show. She said, ‘Grandpa, you’ve got to get on that show; everybody will see it. I said, ‘OK, we’ll give it a try’, so we did a couple.”

e two shows set him up for life, but he found out he was a better actor than he was an investor a er his attempt at putting money into oil was not a success.

“Yeah. It was my rst and last investment in oil. I was at the Cattle Baron’s Ball and this guy (says), ‘Have you ever invested in the oil business?’ And I said, ‘No, sir’ and he said, ‘Well, I’m drilling down in the south of Texas. How’d you like to come down tomorrow and I’ll show you about it’.

“So I went down and at the end of the day I gave him a cheque for $150,000, and the next day he went on safari in Kenya.” ere’s a cackle down the phone from Hagman.

“And he said, ‘Well, we had to stop drilling because we ran out of money and we weren’t hitting any oil’ and I said, ‘Wait a minute. You said that you were going to go down 7500 feet, now how far are you down?’ and he says ‘5000’. I said, ‘Well, give me 2500 feet worth of that money’. ‘Can’t, don’t have it. You can stand in line and I’ll be sued by 500 other people, so forget it’. I said, ‘What about that silver saddle I saw that you had in your home up in New Mexico?’ He said, ‘You got it’. So I got this beautiful silver saddle, which I auctioned last weekend for, I think, $80,000. So I got some of it back.”

He was sad to sell the saddle even though he doesn’t ride horses. “Yeah. It was quite beautiful. Functional art. I like art you can use for a purpose.”

Hagman is a spokesman for SolarWorld, a solar energy commercial enterprise in the US. He says he lives as green a life as possible. “I’ve solarised my home about

 e STETSON’S BACK

ve years ago and I don’t pay any electricity bills any more and I think it’s the largest solarised home in the United States, which probably means the whole world.” So, a man of good green credentials. “Absolutely. e sun is going to be there long a er petroleum and coal is gone.”

I asked him if he was across the debate in Australia about a tax on carbon and where he stood on it? He asked for a short brie ng. “I think that would be good,” he says. “I could sell my carbon footprint, which is nothing. If that went through in America I’d probably make some money o that, because I don’t produce anything.”

Was the Obama government doing enough for the environment? “ e oil and coal industry run the American government, so it’s a hard road to hoe to curb that.”

Hagman has been married to the Swedish-born Maj Axelsson for 56 years. ey lived on the beach at Malibu for years, where Hagman was nicknamed e Mad Monk of Malibu for his colourful ways, which included putting out ags on the beach and not saying a word on Sundays.

“I don’t do it any more,” Hagman says of his no-talk Sundays. “I used to because I used to talk so much I needed one day just to relax. But it was wonderful, I did it for 20 years, I loved it.”

Now living in Santa Monica, Hagman seems, at 80, bemused to still be working. I asked whether he sees colleagues of a similar age working. “No, they’re all dead.” Well, I say, you’re a survivor. “Of course I had a liver transplant 15 years ago, so that does make a di erence.” Anyway, I say, actors don’t need to retire. “Why (would they)?” he says. “What are they going to retire to?”

Hagman was last in Australia 20 years ago and today marvels at how “high” Sydney is, with all its “beautiful glass buildings”. His one trip here isn’t the only Australian connection. He has appeared on Dame Edna Everage’s shows, one memorably with a tag “Larry” on his jacket should the host forget his name.

“He’s wonderful,” Hagman says of Edna/Barry Humphries. “I did a couple of his shows. He’s a marvellous artist. I just think he is one of the best artists I’ve ever seen.”

It’s time for Hagman to get to his adoring fans. We should all be celebrating the return of one of TV’s greatest characters … everyone except maybe Cli Barnes. \

Page 8: HDV-Heidelberg-20110706-Edition59

When I first moved to Melbourne, a good friend insisted we indulge in a time-honoured tradition

among our friends called “Glunch” – a portmanteau word made from “gluttonous” and “lunch”. We both enjoy cooking as much as we enjoy eating, so the plan was to each create a series of extravagant dishes and shovel them down our necks while we watched British comedies. I love Glunch. There is something about lolling about on a couch with the meat sweats that goes so perfectly with pasty-faced Anglo humour.

My friend grabbed a handful of silver coins he kept by the front door and ushered me on to a tram. He explained that we were heading to the Vic Market to gather the necessary ingredients. His suggestion was a hard sell on a lazy Sunday. I couldn’t see the point in travelling all the way to some market when we could walk to the nearest mega-chain supermarket. But upon stepping into the joyful chaos of the meat section in Vic Market, I completely understood why we’d gone to the trouble of the journey.

The cacophony of merchants spruiking produce in broken English; that thick raw-meat smell in the back of your throat; mouths producing vast amounts of steak lubricant, forcing people to continually swallow the tide of saliva. A crowd of inquisitive faces staring at not just chops but tongues, eyeballs, brains and offal. Evidence meat doesn’t just come in perfectly portioned plastic wrap-covered trays but from the bones of a slain beast.

After a few hours of wandering past glossy tomatoes that were actually red, I realised my friend and I had spent the better part of an afternoon shopping for food. Stranger still, we were having fun. That seemed unheard

of. Shopping for groceries isn’t fun, it’s a horrible chore you squeeze in to your working day so your body doesn’t succumb

to that pesky habit of dieting. If I had to spend all afternoon in a Coles or Safeway, I would stab myself with a grossly

under-ripe banana. Not that I could afford one.Food is, quite literally, a part of who we are. If you

are what you eat, surely the way you eat is just as important. Like music, food is always best when shared

with people. That’s not just true of the eating, but also the gathering and preparing. Traditional markets connect

us with our food, and the very people who grow it. The stall owners share tales with you about how they gathered their produce that extends far beyond “I grabbed it off the palette

in the loading dock”. Markets ignite some instinctual need to forage. It’s adventure, not routine. You don’t duck into the markets for supplies. You plod along, learning what stimulates, seeking out familiar flavours and untested experiences.

When you’re shopping at a market you don’t feel like a consumer. Fresh produce was never meant to sit under fluorescent lights. I have never salivated in a supermarket. Maybe because the food itself is so packaged that it’s almost unrecognisable as edible to the programming of our primal minds. I suspect it’s simply because only the eyes get a workout in supermarkets. No smell except for sanitisers, no sounds other than the incessant ping of the barcode scanners, and with constant video surveillance you feel pangs of guilt from manhandling a squash.

The average supermarket is so nauseatingly clinical, like a waiting room in a medical centre. Everyone tries to get out of there as quickly as possible, and they keep to themselves. There’s no socialising in supermarkets, you don’t share the experience of finding your food with anyone other than the person at the checkout, and their blank eyes stare right through you to quitting time.

So the next time you have friends over for Glunch or even a plain old lunch, don’t just have them over for the meal. Plan the day properly and take them to your local market. Share the whole experience of the meal – the hunting, the cooking, and the finale of satisfied bloating. Food can be so much more than just the eating. Happy hunting. \

AndRew McConnell has great buns.

His New England lobster roll is sensuality in an egg-glazed Cantonese hot bread. That first mouthful of cold-poached Australian crayfish seasoned with watercress and dressed in Kewpie, the cult Japanese egg-yolk mayonnaise, is so lascivious it should come with an R18+ rating. I have to stop myself doing a Meg Ryan each time I have one.

After the delirious success of Cumulus Inc and Cutler & Co, McConnell has launched bayside with Golden Fields, a designer mess hall where East meets West and then some. It has become an instant It-crowd favourite – so much so that we put our names on the Saturday dining list at 7pm and finally get a table at 9pm. A return visit for a late Sunday lunch is much less hectic, allowing time to appreciate the minimalist interior of Serge Mouille’s 1950s lamp sculptures, Shane Kent’s handmade ceramic wall tiles and crockery and a sort of shadow-box arrangement above the marble bar with quirky displays including a waving Japanese money cat, a golden rollerskate and a stuffed mallard duck. The overall effect is of a blindingly white stage on which the engaging black-clad staff and patrons deliver their lines.

Those luscious lobster rolls are the ideal appetisers to McConnell’s bower-bird menu of delicious intrigues. Raw sea urchin lumps nestle on two thin razors of taco-like flatbread with hints of lardo (pork fat) and saffron-scented escabeche carrot and onions. It’s a mere slip of a dish but a fine amuse bouche.

From there we careen to a glossy, briny Dunalley oyster topped with freshly grated Tasmanian wasabi that leaves a lingering left hook in the mouth. Sweet hunks of Moreton Bay bug meat are styled into a salad with shredded, remoulade-style cabbage seasoned with Kampot pepper (Cambodia’s finest), mint and pickled mustard greens. The combination of flavours – the pepper lends a horseradish-like air to proceedings – and textures is brilliant.

Likewise the grass-fed Angus Black beef, essentially a tartare spiked with fried onions, crudites of cucumber, sorrel and cabbage heart and a fiery lava of pureed kimchi that enhances and tames the raw beef. Extra puree is provided in a small side dish; the more you slap on, the more smoky and addictive the tartare becomes.

The wine list rewards a bit of study. You could pick up a fairly priced aromatic white to offset the Asian spice or splurge on a premier cru Meursault. There are almost 30 wines available by glass or 375ml (half-bottle) decanter, and nine sakes. You’d never go thirsty but you might wish some of the whites weren’t served quite so cold.

Fried school prawns are riddled with ribbons of deep-fried pork scratchings, best eaten with a squeeze of lemon and a dunk in the accompanying garlic mayo souped up with some of the kitchen’s sweet chilli sauce.

A chicken salad is constructed on a base of flat, fat rice noodles made in-house, ringed with chilli and Szechuan pepper, layered with cucumber sticks and sliced spring onion, all of it infused with just the right amount of sesame paste. It arrives at the same time as the sautéed

mushrooms (shimeji, enoki, pine, oyster, shiitake, etc) with poached duck egg. Both plates benefit from a good tossing. In the case of the former, to scent the entire plate with sesame, chilli and Szechuan. In the case of the latter, muddling the ingredients helps emulsify the egg and coat the mushrooms in a thick sauce flavoured with confit garlic and soy sauce. If I could make this at home I’d have it every week.

During an expansive binge, the only less than stellar dish we try is the grilled octopus and mussels with celery and chilli paste. It looks beautiful, like everything else here, but is distractingly salty rather than the advertised hot.

Desserts are decadent and unmissable. A meringue-based, chewy peanut butter parfait is drenched in thick caramel and crowned with a scoop of almost superfluous chocolate. The chocolate-and-ginger tablette is a choc-coated dream of two-tiered mousse with a seam of dense chocolate sponge, its richness tempered by a scoop of buttermilk ice-cream on a mound of smashed ginger snaps.

Given he’s already conquered the city and northside, McConnell’s impressive debut bayside

with Golden Fields proves he’s got something of a Midas touch when it comes to exciting Melbourne dining. \

O Cosmedics Range $49-$99This Australian-made and owned range is pure genius. It holds the worldwide patent for V8 Peptide Complex, which claims to work “behind the scenes on the cell structure to age-proof the skin” – accelerating healing and rejuvenation so that your skin becomes pitch-perfect. What really made me take notice were the high concentration of active ingredients, absence of llers and the legitimate science. The range is succinct, effective and easy to follow – a de nite leader.

L’Occitane Shea Butter RangeThis is the best of the best. Since its inception the company has been taking steps towards fair-trade certi ed organic shea butter. The brand stands out for clearly telling buyers how much shea butter is in each product. It offers products for the face and body, and the creams are nothing short of miraculous. There are way too many to name a favourite, but if I am forced, the face serum and 100 per cent shea butter in a tin have to be the ones.

I HAVE A BIG buzzing bee in my bonnet and I’m in a mood for a

good rant. e thing that has got me in such a uster is exaggeration, or, in more cultivated speech – gilding the lily.

Over the years I have been receiving press material about the wonders of essential oils, the healing qualities of herbs and scienti c breakthroughs.

ey tell how an ingredient is going to change the way you use products and what results you can achieve, and then you read the ingredients list. e hero ingredient is featured towards the end of the list, indicating that there’s very little in the product in the rst place. e closer an ingredient is to the top of the list, the more of it is in the product.

Butyrospermum parkii – or the shea tree, as it is more commonly known – produces one ingredient that is always promoted but is actually used in miniscule amounts. Shea butter is one of nature’s true miracles.

e shea tree grows naturally in the African savannah, produces its rst fruit when it is 15-25 years old and reaches full production when it is 30-50 years old. e tree can continue to produce good fruit for up to 200 years.

e butter is extracted from the nut of the tree. Pure, unadulterated natural shea butter is nature’s vitamin A and has many uses.

Your best bet when buying a product that is rich in shea butter is to check the ingredients list. Shea butter should be in the top ve. e products listed here have good amounts of shea butter, are fair-trade sourced and are e ective taskmasters. \

e Body Shop Shea Body Butter Range from $12.95The brand that drew attention to the importance of fair-trade sourcing has a succinct but fantastic range of shea-butter body products. The body butter is without a doubt the hero product, but if you like something lighter, do not go past the Shea Whip Body Lotion.

Remedica Vanilla & Shea Body Butter (250g, $36) and Shea Nut Butter & Aloe Vera Emollient (135g, $26)Two outstanding products from one of Australia’s best-kept secrets: Remedica. The body butter is rich but goes on beautifully and the natural fragrance is so good you can go without a scent. The emollient is handy as a remedy for just about everything.

Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter, 226g, $67The legendary Crème de Corps has a new addition – a lighter whipped cream that is equally decadent. The luscious cream is absorbed into the skin immediately without any trace and the silkiness lasts even after a quick shower.

Korres Hair Mask with Shea Butter & Vitamins 150ml, $29.95If you have dry, listless hair, this is the hair mask for you. Rich in shea butter, this mask not only tames unruly dry hair but also calms the scalp. The results are softer, more manageable, silky strands.

Apivita Express Gold Moisturising & Revitalising Mask with Prickly Pear Sachets (2x8ml, $12.90)These portable and easy sachets are a dream to use. Each sachet lasts for two to three applications. The mask is effective and gives the skin a quick wake-up call when you need it most.

JEANS THAT FIT e right pair makes the world a better place, writes JANE ROCCA.

(SU

)

F inding a pair of jeans to suit your body is not always as straightforward as many of us would wish. In fact, some women go to great lengths to avoid the denim squeeze altogether. What’s

more, knowing where to begin style-wise is enough to drive anybody mad. Does one opt for a straight leg, boot leg, high-rise skinny, low-rise, cigarette leg, boy leg, or ared? e choices are endless.

Add to this heady mix the fact that jeggings have also crept into the market to steal attention away from leggings and you’ve got a lot of decision making to sort through, and that’s even before you head to the change room.

When celebrities endorse jeans, or any product for that matter, another problem arises for the consumer. Let’s face it, do any of us know anyone who looks the same as an A-lister in a pair of jeans?

Women know what they want when it comes to

buying jeans – it’s all about looking good, nding quality and being comfortable in the clothes you wear.

When Oprah Winfrey declared her love of Not Your Daughter’s Jeans, it could be said that a shapely gure such as the former TV tycoon might know what she’s talking about when it comes to nding a brand that genuinely delivers on its promise.

“Celebrity endorsement is great but it’s not critical to the brand as it’s all about how women feel and look when they wear the jeans,” says NYDJ brand manager Sharon Laufer. “With Oprah, it all came about when the jeans launched to market in the States. e jeans received massive media support and Oprah picked up on that and thought it was the perfect product for her target market.”

NYDJ promise a nip and tuck that comes without surgical intervention. e jeans are designed to li the “saggy” bits and give your body shape a svelte appearance. e label is obviously marketed to women over 35, whose body might have changed a er several children. Heck, they’re for anyone who carries a few extra kilos and wants to hide it. In a nutshell, it’s for pear-, apple- and triangular-shaped women.

In the US, it’s the go-to label for many women and for the past four years Australian women have been able to test the jeans many “real” women are talking about. ey are available in sizes eight to 18 in most styles.

“ e jeans feature a patented criss-cross front panel design and extra stretch fabric that creates a comfortable corset e ect to support and shape the body,” says Laufer.

NYDJ also come with a 22.5-centimetre rise and, according to Laufer, they are perfect for women who don’t want high-waisted jeans but also don’t want jeans that hit right on the waist.

“ ey work on a variety of body shapes as they provide shape where it’s required,” she says.

We love the new skinny-leg jean and cargo additions to the autumn/winter 2011 range, which are perfect for weekends and looks great with boots, ats or heels.

Let’s face it, if jeans t right, most of us feel happier, healthier, sexier and have one less thing to worry about. But with everyone pitching to our self-esteem, it’s no wonder shopping for denim can become a dial-a-friend crisis.

However, with the greater variety on the market, including stretchy denims, better fabrication, larger sizes and modern cuts, there are now more reasons for women to be cheerful.

For younger audiences, there’s fashion-savvy brand Nobody – a Melbourne label that started in 1999, with its rst shop opening in Fitzroy in 2006.

e label is proud of its ethical work practice, with all denim jeans made in Australia. Aimed squarely at the hip, groovy and cashed-up arm of Generation Y, Nobody’s modern cuts are in a league of their own – we love the Norma Jean for a shot at 1950s styling, the high-energy appeal of the rash Metal Skinny Jean and the groovy ’70s pulse of the Lust Pant.

We love Nobody, too, for the entertaining names it dreams up for its jeans alone. But the cra smanship is worth every stitch as well. \

yoga for stress and its myriad resulting ailments, it grates me ragged that Pilates sneaks in under “physiotherapy” for rebates (Australian Unity). When will yoga be recognised for the health bene ts it o ers? You don’t see too many mat-toting devotees fagging outside the yoga studio or heading for a fast-food attack a er class.

Yoga Australia is on the case, and has recently elicited a “maybe we would pay” from the following private health funds – Australian Health Management, Australian Unity, BUPA Australia Health, CBHS Health Fund, CUA Health Fund, Grand United Corporation Health, HBF, HCF, Central West Health, Manchester Unity Health, MBF, NIB, Railway and Transport Health Fund, SGIC Health Insurance, Teachers’ Union Health, Teachers Health Fund, Transport Health and Westfund.

If yours is among them, get the policy manager’s name and send a letter. You deserve a rebate on term-paid yoga fees when health funds are already o ering bene ts for approved quit-smoking (NIB) and weight-loss (Australian Unity) programs.

What costs more? Australian Unity reckons overweight Aussies cost taxpayers $56.6 billion a year!

Responsible people are spending thousands of dollars on preventive health activities (naturopathy,

meditation, retreats, stress-management programs) while their hard-earned health-fund dollars are thrown at operations for the gimme-a-quick- x crowd.

At the April Yoga Australia conference in Melbourne, Stephen Penman, past president of Yoga Australia and now chief executive of the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine, shared some salient points. Cardiovascular health, for example, is one of Australia’s national health priority areas.

Quoting Professor Marc Cohen of RMIT University, Penman noted it is considered “conservative” to strip a vein from a leg, break open the chest, place the vein across a blocked artery (coronary bypass surgery, costing $20,000-$40,000) and to repeat the procedure every 10 years, whereas the intervention of eating properly, exercising, relaxing, stopping smoking and sharing your feelings is considered “radical”.

I work part-time for a cardiologist. Among the weekly patient parade, many cling to lists of lifelong, lipid-lowering and heart-control drugs (Australians spend $1 billion a year on these, says Penman) rather than adopting any suggestion to alter their lifestyle. As the good doctor mused with one patient recently: “So, you’d rather have a heart attack than stop smoking?” Yes, apparently.

Yoga has a keen role to play in the prevention of heart disease. Penman noted Dr Dean Ornish’s New York

Times best-seller, Program for Reversing Heart Disease. It’s working title, E ects of Yoga and a Vegetarian Diet on Coronary Heart Disease, was dumped, yoga being less widely respected by the conservative medical community in the 1970s. Come on health funds, support your pro-active members.

Yoga for cancer

Cancer control is another of Australia’s top health priorities, so it was wonderful to also hear from Bernadette Arena at the conference about her (and Petrea King’s) invaluable work with people with cancer at the Quest for Life Foundation in New South Wales.

If only there was a one-size- ts-all yogic approach to dissolving cancer. ere are plenty of dedicated yogis, since past, for whom there was not.

From the sidelines, Arena watched her friend Billy apply himself wholeheartedly to a rigorous asana sequence recommended by a poorly quali ed yoga teacher (also his friend), that le him exhausted. Arena’s work with restorative yoga, however, gave Billy back the energy he needed to enjoy his loving support group, and to die in peace.

A er many years of working with cancer patients, Quest for Life’s advice to anyone with terminal or

chronic illness makes so much sense: “Go for peace”. Having peace at heart, no matter what the prognosis, is the best support and, ultimately, the “cure” for our cultural fear of death.

Am I any good?

As regular yoga students, we o en hang out for approval from our teachers. A er too little direct acknowledgement, useful adjustments and zero one-on-one time in Western-style mega classes (traditionally, yoga was taught individually) you might wonder if your practice is percolating …

If you feel good a erwards, you’re doing well because the practice is serving your needs. But even if you feel churned and irritable, your practice might also be cleverly allowing you to bubble up the emotions you’ve been plunging down for months, even years; anger never ltered through a clear mind; the grief you were too busy to feel and countless other emotional “ickies”.

Also at the Yoga Australia conference, teacher Sal Flynn recalled yoga master T. K. V. Desikachar’s response to students who asked, “Is my practice any good?”: “Look at your relationships,” he responded.

If it’s making you an all-round better person, yup, you’re on track. \

Deylen also worked as a timber contractor for Knox. Deylen and his family lived in the Sherbrooke Street house for 12 years. He can still recall the provenance of every brick, beam and post. Buying a property with sweeping valley views, two hectares of good pasture, machinery sheds, stables and a riding ménage usually means making some big sacri ces when it comes to vicinity to

services. But at 55 Jones Road, you can literally enjoy the best of both worlds.

This picture of quiet, country life is just a moment’s drive from Wattle Glen train station and all the amenities you need in nearby Diamond Creek. It is also close to the Western Ring Road. A Kangaroo Ground address and lifestyle often comes with much more travel time and many more unmade roads than what you experience here. Coming home is easy, especially to a charming ranch-style residence that has recently been renovated and extended. It now includes a stunning granite kitchen with servery, oversized rumpus with powder room, and 1000-bottle wine cellar. A large en suite with twin vanities, spa and courtyard access was also recently added by the second and current owners.

The original footprint of the house comprises four bedrooms and two additional living areas, including the lounge with exposed-brick replace. Outdoor living is just as comfortable and luxurious.

A large pool and spa bound by extensive decking overlooks uninterrupted hillside views. It is served by a covered, built-in barbecue and gazebo.

The stables and riding arena are nearby – making this good-sized, well-located property perfect for families with children who love horses. \ LIAM CARTER

This charming three-bedroom property sits among the tree-cloaked hills that divide Eltham North and St Helena. The current owners were drawn to this property more than a decade ago for its cathedral ceilings,

zoned accommodation and recycled brick façade, which has not dated a day. Since they moved in, the house has also grown bigger. Off the main living hub and large open-plan kitchen, there is now a stunning conservatory or sunroom. It extends into the backyard, opening on one side to a stylish courtyard with water feature and on the other to large lawns. The split-level front living and dining room has timber-lined ceilings and an exposed-brick replace. The study nearby is easily large enough to become a fourth bedroom. The main bedroom is hidden away from the kids’ wing and has a freshly renovated en suite. This 600-square metre property has a double garage and side-gate access to more parking space. \ LIAM CARTER

The Ivanhoe end of Maltravers Road – near the station – is de ned by a sweeping bend that is lined with elegant period houses. Some are grand and stately. Others, such as No.129, are more quaint and modest.

This property has only had two owners since it was built and retains many of its charming, original features. There are decorative art deco ceilings in the entrance foyer, main bedroom, lounge and dining room. The lounge has a large brick replace anked by small feature windows. The walls in the original wing bear an unusual rough render, recently painted white, that adds a wonderful texture to the living spaces. The built-in timber cabinet and concealed mirrored bar by the dining room replace are other rarities. The rear bedroom, converted into a self-contained at, was added some time between the 1930s and 1970s. Much time has been put into the back garden, which includes camellias, azaleas, roses and a owering gum. \ LIAM CARTER

The bathrooms, including the oversized en suite, are chic and stylish with their two-toned white-and-dark-grey tiles, contemporary vanities and tapware. Stairs lead down to a gym, which could easily become the third bedroom, and a huge home cinema with a state-of-the-art screen and projector, authentic shag pile carpets and leads out to a covered terrace. The 680-square metre block is just two houses up the hill from the park and walking tracks connecting to Rosanna and Watsonia. \ LIAM CARTER
