PRESENTS
PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT THE PRESERVATION OF THE HISTORIC DESOTO THEATRE
Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation
September 20, 2014
“To lead a community effortto restore, maintain and
operate the DeSoto Theatreas a historical, cultural and
economic asset.”
Welcome to the Historic DeSoto Theatre. Thank you for attending tonight’sconcert, “This Magic Moment with The Drifters”, presented by the Historic DeSotoTheatre Foundation and State Mutual Insurance. This has been an exciting year for the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation aswe have worked to fulfill the above mission statement and our promise to restorethis wonderful historic icon. With the help of strong partnerships the HDTF hasformed with the Fox Theatre Institute, an arm of the Fox Theatre dedicated to thepreservation of theatres, Rome Little Theatre, our resident theatre company andSeven Hills Fellowship, our neighbor church and friend who holds worshipservices in our auditorium on Sundays, we have made great strides. This year, weare also proud to announce new partnerships with Venuedog.com and the RomeArea Council for the Arts which have enabled us to expand the programming weare able to offer and bring more spectacular events to Rome. We have alsobenefited from the tireless work of many volunteers and from generous donationsfrom members and friends. A special thanks to HDTF Programming Chair, JimPowell, and Vice President, Michelle Picon who have worked tirelessly to fosterthese community relationships and build a coalition of support for the DeSoto.Additionally, tonight would not be possible without my friends, Ansley Saville andFran Bagley; the true ‘architects’ of “This Magic Moment.” Tonight, we are excited to present a much transformed auditorium from this timelast year. Those of you who joined us for the spectacular “Tam’s” Concert last fallremember that the very next day, we, along with help from the Rome LittleTheatre and many of our volunteer friends went to work unbolting and removingthe old seats from the auditorium. Those seats have been replaced with beautiful, historically accurate seats that pay homage to the theatre’s beginnings whileproviding all of the comforts of the 21st century. Pay special attention to the plaques that adorn the arms of many of the seats. Each plate bears the name of a patron or a loved one that has been memorializedby friends of the HDTF as part of our “Name a Seat” Campaign. Members of ourcommunity are embracing this unique way to help restore the DeSoto. Pleasetake time to visit our new concessions area, renovated lounge space and updatedrestrooms which have been made possible by the generous donations to thiscampaign. Our architects, designers, and builders have worked together to createspaces that have a classic art deco feel with a modern edge. I especially want tothank, HDTF board members, architect, Mark Cochran and contractor, DavidClonts, for lending their time and expertise to this phase of the renovations. We have many more plans in store for the theatre and we need continuedsupport from the community to make them possible. We look forward to workingwith you in achieving our mission.
Chris JacksonPresident, Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation
Message from the President
Friends of the DeSoto, Thank you for "This Magic Moment" and for yourongoing support of our DeSoto Theatre! The DeSotohas been an integral part of the Rome communitysince 1929. It has brought joy and entertainment tothe lives of many dedicated performers, volunteersand audience members over the decades. Being a part of the Foundation’s HOSTCOMMITTEES over the past four years has mademe realize how much we have accomplished. In thepast two years, we have completely refurbished therefreshments area, the new lounge, the two verylarge and wonderful men’s and ladies’ restrooms, and the auditorium. The new theater seats areexquisite, with more than 100 already named inmemory or honor of a loved one. I remember theDeSoto in its former glory ~ the same glory that isbeing revived once again through the help of donorslike you. The race is still on and I challenge each of you tofollow us to the end! While much has beencompleted, there is still much to accomplish. Stay apart of this wonderful landmark and continue tosupport our community through the growth andrestoration of the magnificent DeSoto Theatre.Thank you!
Fran Bagley

DeSoto Theatre History In early 1928 O. C. Lam, the owner of Lam Amusement Company, laid plans toconstruct a new movie theatre in downtown Rome, Georgia. Lam wanted to build amovie palace — a luxurious theatre modeled after New York’s Roxy. Lampurchased a section of prime real estate on the main street of downtown Rome for$50,000. The building’s exterior and Georgian interior stylishly housed a number of recentmovie palace innovations. Designed as a “talkie” theatre, it was the first venue inthe South to be designed and built for sound pictures. Rome’s new house boasted aVitaphone sound system. And, the theatre was heated and cooled by an innovativeblower-fan air conditioning and tubular boiler system. Additionally, the theatre wasequipped with state of the art fire safety equipment. Fitted with many exits, thetheatre could be emptied in two minutes. Lam named his new movie palace for Hernando DeSoto, who was thought bymany historians to have passed through the area that is now Rome in 1540. TheDeSoto was completed at a cost of $110,000 and opened in August of 1929. At thattime, the theatre seated well over 1000 patrons, making it one of the seven largestmovie venues in Georgia at the time. The theatre was an instant success and thepride of Rome. The DeSoto was one of the main sources of entertainment forNorthwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama for the next fifty years. In 1982, The DeSoto closed as a movie theatre, but soon reopened as the venuefor Rome’s local amateur theatre group. Now seating 498 patrons, the Rome LittleTheatre has staged dozens of plays in the 23 years it owned the DeSoto, and thetheatre is one of the venues for the annual Rome International Film Festival. TheDeSoto continues to be a source of entertainment in downtown Rome. The DeSotostill retains its Art-Deco marquee, French mirrored entrance hall, and Georgianinterior design. RLT deeded the facility to the Historic DeSoto Theatre Foundation inorder to preserve and protect the building.
