UPSET FORGING
High-quality forging is essential to ensure a long
working life for our pipes. North Star continually
invests in upgrading forging capability. In
October 2016 we began installation of the two
most advanced hydraulic forges in the Chinese
HDD industry. Our four hydraulic forges range
from 500T to 1030T; a 1250T mechanical press
completes the forging lineup.
QUALITY CONTROL
North Star possesses the most advanced HDD
materials testing lab in the country. All pipes from
127 to 168mm are tested in strict accordance with
API SPEC 5CT; the body and threads of smaller
diameter pipes are tested using API standards,
while further tests apply custom standards
developed by our own team.
HEAT TREATMENT
North Star’s heat treatment processes are 100%
conducted in-house, using custom-built quench-
and-temper furnaces designed specifically for
HDD pipes. This gives us rigorous control over
this critical manufacturing stage, guaranteeing
consistency of the pipes’ mechanical properties.

North Star has 15 years’ experience in
manufacturing HDD pipes for the Chinese
and international markets. We are the only
Chinese manufacturer with in-house capability
to produce API-standard pipes specifically
designed for the most powerful HDD rigs. North
Star’s factories comprise the biggest and most
comprehensive HDD supplier in China.

ABOUT NORTH STAR
Our origins date back to 1998, when Mr. Wang Yuxi opened the
North factory in the industrial district of Xuanhua, three hours
northwest of Beijing. North was among the earliest players in
China’s youthful HDD market, which expanded rapidly in the first
decade of the 21st century. A workforce of 40 in 2005 grew to more
than 150 in 2008.
In 2010 North partnered with Japanese company Petromaterials
to build a dedicated HDD pipe factory: China Star. In 2012
HDD drill pipe production moved completely to the new
facility, which occupies 12,000 square meters next to its sister
factory, Petromaterials China. Petromaterials is an API-certified
manufacturer producing large drill pipes for the oil and gas industry.
The North Star company and brand were established in 2012
to unify sales and marketing of the two factories’ products on
the international market. North Star’s head office is in Beijing. Its
President and General Manager, Michael Lyu, is concurrently head
of both the North and China Star factories.
