TECHNICAL DATA :
Deluge Valve is known as a s yst em cont rol valve in a delugesyst em, used for fast applicat ion of wat er in a spray syst em.To prot ect areas such as power t ransformer inst allat ion,
st orage t ank, conveyor prot ect ion and ot her indust r ialapplicat ion et c. Wit h t he addit ion of foaming agent t hey do
prot ect Aircr aft hangar and inflammable liquid fire.
VALVE OPERATIONHD Deluge valve is a quick r elease, hydraulically operat eddiaphragm valve. It has t hree chambers, isolat ed fromeach ot her by t he diaphragm operat ed clapper and seatseal. While in SET posit ion, wat er press ure is t r ansmit t edt hrough an ext ernal bypass check valve and rest rict ionorifice from t he syst em supply side t o t he t op chamber,so t hat supply pressure in t he t op chamber act acrosst he diaphragm operat ed clapper which holds t he seat
against t he inlet supply pr ess ur e because of t hedifferent ial pressure design. On det ect ion of fire t het op chamber is vent ed t o at mosphere t hrough t he out letpor t via opened act uat ion devices. The t op chamberpressure cannot be replenished thr ough t he rest rict edinlet por t , and t he upward force of t he supply pressur elift s t he clapper allowing t he wat er flow t o t he syst em
piping net work and alarm devices.

c) W ET PILOT TRIM( HYDRAULIC RELEASE )
Wet pilot operat ion uses a pilot line of closed sprinklerscont aining pressurized wat er, supplied t hrough t heupst r eam side of t he Deluge valve, t hrough a rest r ict edorifice. All t he release lines are connect ed t o a commonrelease line. Due t o release fo any one of t he releasedevice, t he wat er presure in t he t op chamber of t he
Deluge valve drops, and t he Deluge valve opens.
d) ELECTRIC RELEASE TRIMTo act uat e a Deluge valve elect r ically, a s olenoid valve is
provided t o drain t he wat er from t he t op chamber oft he Deluge valve. A pr ess ur e s wit ch is pr ovided t oact ivat e an elect ric alarm, t o shut down t he desiredequipement or t o give "Tr ipped" indicat ion t o t he Delugevalve. In addit ion t o t his a pr ess ure s wit ch can alsomonit or "Low air pressur e" and "Fire condit ion" when usedin dry pilot air line.
e) TEST AND ALARM TRIM W ITHSPRINKLER ALARM
This t rim is s upplied wit h t he spr inkler alarm bell, whichbells on act uat ion of t he Deluge valve. A t est valve isprovided t o t est t he normal oper at ion of t he sprinkleralarm bell.
RESETTING PROCEDURE FOR THE
DELUGE VALVE(i) Close t he upst ream side st op valve pr ovided below
t he deluge valve.
ii) Open bot h t he drain valves and close when t he flowof wat er has ceased.
(iii) Close t he r elease device/replace t he S pr inkler ifr elease was t hrough Sprinkler /Q.B.Det ect or.
iv) Inspect and r elease if required, or close t he sect ionof t he det ect ion syst em subject ed t o "Fire condit ion".
(v) In case of dry pilot det ect ion syst em, open t he airsupply valve t o build-up air pr ess ur e. Open t he
b) DRY PILOT TRIM (PNEUMATIC RELEASE)Dry pilot operat ion uses a pilot line of closed Spr inkler/QB det ect or cont aining air under pr essure, locat ed int he area t o be prot ect ed. It requires regulat ed dry airsupply wit h main supply point t hrough rest rict ed or ifice.
The air press ure t o be maint ained as spec ified in t hecat alogue of Dry Pilot Act uat or, Model-H. The pilot lineis connect ed t o air inlet side of act uat or. The t opchamber of t he deluge valve is connect ed t o wat er inletside of act uat or.
When t here is an air pr essure dr op, or due t o releaseof any of t he r elease device on det ect ion of fir e, t hediaphragm of act uat or is lift ed and allows t he wat er t odrain. This r eleases t he wat er pres sur e in t he t opchamber of t he deluge valve, allowing t he deluge valvet o open and wat er t o flow int o t he syst em piping & alarmdevices. Recommended air supply pressur e for dry pilott rim syst em is 3 t o 4 kg/sq.cm.

Not e : The valve can be reset wit hout undergoing aboveprocedur e, by just closing / replacing t he release deviceas valve is aut o reset t ype. The reset t ime may be longor cause vibr at ion while c losing depending on backpressur e at t he out let of t he valve.
CAUTION(a) Do not close t he pr iming valve, down s t r eam
and upst ream st op valves, while t he syst em isin service.
(b) The releasing device must be maint ained in t heopen posit ion, when act uat ed, t o prevent t hedeluge valve from closure.
(c) While using a Deluge valve in t he wet pilot syst emt he height and t he lengt h of t he wet pilotdet ect ion line is t o be limit ed as shown in t hewet pilot spr ionkler height limit at ion graph.
(d) Do not connect t he Spr inkler Alarm out letdr ainline t o c lose a common drain as it maycr eat e back pressur e and Sprinkler Alarm maynot funct ion.
(e) Deluge valve mus t have s uppor t t o absor bsudden opening or closing vibrat ion shock t o t hepiping.
(f ) The r espons ibi l i t y of maint enance of t hepr ot ect ion sys t em and devices in pr operoperat ing condit ion lies wit h t he owner of t hesyst em.
SYSTEM TESTING PROCEDURE
(i) Keep t he upst r eam side of t he st op valve part iallyopen. To avoid wat er f low t o syst em side close t hesyst em side st op valve. This valve is t o be kept inopen posit ion aft er t he t est ing is complet ed.
(ii) Let any of t he release devices t o t r ip. This will r esultin a sudden drop of wat er pr essure in t he deluge
valve t op chamber r esult ing t he deluge valve t o open.Close t he upst ream side st op valve immediat ely.
(iii) Reset t he valve as per t he procedure given underheading "RESETTING PROCEDURE FOR THE DELUGEVALVE".
INSPECTION AND M AINTENANCEInst alled syst em piping net work must be flushed pr operlybefor e placing t he Deluge valve in ser vice.
A qualified and t r ained per son mus t commiss ion t hesyst em. Aft er few init ial successful t est an aut horizedpers on must be t r ained t o perf orm inspect ion and
t est ing of t he syst em. It is recommended t o have regularinspect ion and t est run of t he syst em as per NFPA

guideline or in accor dance t o t he organisat ion having
local jurisdict ion.
(i) W ARNINGInspect ion and t est ing is t o be carr ied out only by
aut hor ised and t rained per sonnel. DO NOT TURN OFFt he wat er supply or close any valve t o make repair(s)or t est t he valve, wit hout placing a roving fire pat r olin t he area covered by t he syst em. Also infor m t helocal securit y personnel and cent r al alarm st at ion,so t hat t here is no false alar m signal.
It is r ecommended t o carr y out physical inspect ionof t he syst em at least t wice in a week. The inspect ionshould ver ify t hat all t he cont rol valves are in pr operposit ion as per t he syst em r equirement and nodamage has t aken place t o any component .
(ii) NORMAL CONDITION(a) All main valves ar e open and are s ealed wit h
t amper pr oof seal.
(b) Drain valves must be kept closed.
(c) No leak or drip is det ect ed from t he drip valve.
(d) All t he gauges except t he sys t em side wat erpres sur e gauge, should show t he r equiredpressure.
(e) There should be no leakage in t he syst em.
(iii) NORM AL CONDITION TEST
(a) The sys t em s hould be chec ked for nor malcondit ion at least once in a week.
(b) Test t he s pr inkler alarm bell or elect r ic alarmby t urning t he alarm t est valve t o t he t estposit ion. The alar m should sound. This t estshould be carr ied out at least once in a week.
(c) Depress t he drip valve knob. Significant wat eraccumulat ion indicat es a possible seat leakage.
(d) Conduct t he wat er f low t est as per t heprocedure of syst em t est ing at least once amont h.
(iv) PERIODIC CHECKConduct t he wat er flow t est by actuat ing few of t her elease devices pr ovided in t he s yst em.Clean allst r ainer (s) and priming line r est r ict ion.This t est ist o be carried out at least once in t hree mont hs.
ABN ORM AL CONDITION
(i) ALARM FAILS TO SOUND(a) Check for any obst ruct ion in t he alarm t est line,
make cert ain t hat t he sprinkler alarm is free t ooper at e.
(b) If an elect r ic alarm is pr ovided, check t he
elect rical circuit ry t o t he alarm.
(ii) FALSE TRIPS(a) Check for clogging in priming line, r est r ict ion
orifice c heck valve, pr iming valve & s t rainer.
(b) Leakage in t he release syst em.
(c) The deluge air panel orifice clogged or low supplypressure.
(iii) LEAKAGE THROUGH THE DELUGE VALVE(a) Damaged deluge valve seat or obst r uct ion on
t he seat face by foreign object .
(b) Leakage in release syst em.
(c) Part ly clogged pr iming line r est r ict ion or ifice
check valve.
(d) Low air pres sur e on release syst em line or
leakage in release syst em.
