EDITORIAL

Inclusive tourism means meeting the needs of all our visitors.

Inclusive accessibility in tourism will benefit us all at some time or another: if we have a disability, even if only temporarily; when we travel with small children; as the population in general ages…

The Principality of Monaco bears this in mind as it constantly strives to improveits infrastructures.

This brochure on “Accessibility in the Principality” collates all of the informationa reduced mobility visitor will need.

It complements the “Reduced Mobility Map” edited by Monaco’s Town Planning Department as well as the different brochures produced by the Tourism Department.

Monaco’s Tourism and Congress Board is at your disposal to answer any questions you may have.

We hope you enjoy your trip to Monaco.

As part of its 30th anniversarycelebrations, the Rose Garden was extended andlandscaped over 5,000m².8,000 rose bushes wereadded representing approximately 300 differentvarieties.

There are three aspects tothis Rose Garden:

- Landscaping: extending the garden and opening upits borders, removing lawns, and creating a 50m waterwall.

- Ecological: in how it wascreated and how it is maintai-ned. This area aims to be asenvironment-friendly as possible; it has been awar-ded the EVE (ecological area)label by the international environmental certificationbody Ecocert.

- Educational: the Rose Garden is organised intoeight different themes thathighlight: the history of therose; the link this emblematicflower has with Monaco’sroyal family and other key figures; roses used in landscaping in towns; and innovations that have enhanced the evolution ofmodern roses with beautyand powerful fragrances.

The Rose Garden is accessi-ble to visitors with reducedmobility or in a wheelchair. The slopes are not steep.

It was designed by Japaneselandscaper Beppu and features three of the funda-mental components to befound in any landscaped garden: a flat surface (thelake in the centre); a highpoint (the waterfall); and a curved line (the windingpath).

The Japanese Garden totals7,000m² and constitutes anoutstanding park at the footof an urban landscape. It is a stylised copy of nature atlarge with its mountain, hill, waterfall, waterside andbrook. Monaco’s JapaneseGarden embraces the stric-test principles of the conceptof compactness, dear to theZen philosophy, and carriesthe EVE ecological label.

SAINT-MARTIN’S GARDENS

This was the first park in the Principality to open to the public. In 1816, the population had survived theRevolution and the Empirebut now had to face famine.

Prince Honoré V (1778-1841)decided to give his subjectsemployment by launchingthe construction of the firstpark. It stood on an abando-ned piece of land clinging to the south-eastern cliff ofthe rock.

The park was revamped by the Prince’s governmentbetween 1983 and 1986.

In terms of the palette ofplants, the park is home to many Mediterranean, European and sub-tropicalspecies that feel quite athome in the Principality’s privileged climate.

The park accounts for a sizeable portion of the open-air museum that is made upof parks in the Principality. It constitutes a key site forthe sustainable managementof green areas and was oneof the first to adopt environ-ment-friendlier gardeningtechniques.

Saint-Martin’s Gardens canbe entered through the gate opposite the cathedral,or the entrance located on the square in front of theOceanographic Museum.
