We hope that this packet will help you fully understand our company’s culture and work to better serve you as you continue to speak with people about High Cotton Ties’ products and services. We encourage you to read through the material thoroughly so that you will be a well-informed representative and will be able to answer any questions that come your way. Since we are a newer company, we expect you will be able to learn all of the material fairly quickly.

In our attempts to become a transparent company, we openly welcome any of your insights or questions. We know that you are going to be the face of our company as you help spread the word about High Cotton Ties on campus and we want you to feel like you are a true part of our company’s growth and success. We hope you will take ownership of the company’s products and culture, and we hope you will free to speak out if you have a question or if you think we could improve in a certain area. You will be helping us sculpt the way we do business, and that is a big responsibility. We hope this will be a really fun and rewarding experience, but we have hired you under the expectation that you will be able to make significant contributions on your campus for High Cotton Ties. Please send any of your insights or comments to James Hill, the Campus Representative Coordinator, at [email protected] and we will do our best to work with you and your campus to see that your needs are met.

This is our second year with campus representatives and we will be focusing on hosting one event each semester on every campus with a rep. We understand that what may work at one campus, may not be the best idea at another. That is why your relationships and involvement in campus are so important to us as we continue to grow. We are only limited by your creative ability, so let us know your thoughts! Thank you so much for your support and we hope to keep closely in touch with you all as you represent High Cotton Ties on campus! All Rights Reserved 2011

Born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, Judy has been sewing her entire life and has always been on the lookout for a product that would link the south to their heritage. “Southern people feel a connection with cotton, and as we’ve seen the revival of bow ties over the past few years, it just seemed natural to put the two together and combine the traditions I love. My background has given me the skills to create a high-quality product as well as the ability to recognize that cotton products represent something much greater to a vast majority of people. I hope that High Cotton Ties will deliver a product that will help men across the nation not only dress well, but feel great about doing so.”

A recent alumnus from UNC-Chapel Hill, James graduated with a major in Economics and a minor from their newly instated Entrepreneurship program with a focus in Social Ventures. “Too often business seemed to be ‘all talk’ to me. I kept hearing that it was difficult for business owners to sleep at night, and knowing that I wanted to be a part of a start-up down the road, I knew the value of delivering a genuine product through a genuine process. If nothing else, when I do get a chance to sleep, I plan on doing so comfortably knowing that we’ve done everything in our power to stay true to the mission we’ve set out to accomplish.”

About UsHigh Cotton Ties offers Washable Cotton Bow Ties and Cummerbunds Hand-Made in North Carolina. We are a bright, new company that supports the revival of North Carolina’s textile history by choosing to hand-cut and hand-sew our products locally. We have found doing so resonates deeply with our customers.

Whether it’s a Steeplechase in Charlottesville, a Cocktail in Chapel Hill, or a Debutante ball in Mobile, High Cotton Ties has just the right bow tie for you. We offer a beautiful array of classic cotton bow ties and cummerbunds that fit your lifestyle.

What separates our company is that we are committed to classic southern mainstays such as tattersalls, ginghams, and madras plaids. It is our goal to present a conscientious, practical alternative to our customers who like the timeless element of a cotton bow tie and love its comfortable feel.

We are firm believers that bow ties should be a regular part of a gentleman’s wardrobe, not simply reserved for formal events. By avoiding novelties and embracing traditional patterns, we create our bow ties with the expectation that they will be worn often and be admired just as frequently. We believe that consumers should hold all companies to a high standard, which is why we only use the finest cottons available. Now more so than ever, consumers require more out of their products, which is why we offer washable products, as we feel it speaks to our cost-effectiveness and durability. Simply put, we not only trust that you will fall in love with our bow ties and cummerbunds, but we also expect them to become a long standing member of your wardrobe.

High Cotton Ties is currently focusing on providing our community with two products, Cotton Bow Ties and Cotton Cummerbunds. As specialists, our customers can come to expect the highest quality products and customer service from us. In doing so, we have had the pleasure of becoming a part of fraternity formals, debutante balls, and weddings alike. Our monogramming service makes for a perfect gift or a great way to treat yourself to something truly personalized.

We understand that when you choose a bow tie to wear, it will end up saying a lot about your character. It is our hope that High Cotton Ties will be able to extend itself to our customers as a helping hand to properly reflect their individuality, in good conscience and in good style. Knowing that all of our products represent the revival of a southern tradition, we are more than happy to welcome you as a part of our mission.

The most impressive form of business can be found in the most ordinary places.

In the case of High Cotton Ties, the idea for a new men’s cotton bow tie and cummerbund company literally grew up right under the nose of Judy Hill last Christmas. As High Cotton Ties quickly becomes known for its unique twist on classic southern style, a passionate family idea has developed into a successful small business.

Judy developed this unique idea after her eldest son Cameron returned home from UVa medical school for Christmas break. She made him four bow ties, a style popular at UVa, especially with fraternities. After suitable silk could not be found, Judy opted for cotton fabric.

Cameron later came across a report which stated typical silk ties are now being discouraged in the medical community, as they have been found to be the a possible carrier of germs, including H1N1. Since cotton bow ties can be washed rather than put through the expensive and infrequent process of dry-cleaning, High Cotton Ties provides a cleaner and more comfortable way to dress professionally on the job.

A natural seamstress who has worked creatively with clothes since her childhood, Judy was able to develop a pattern for the new bow tie. Cameron debuted one of his new ties, impressing family and friends and giving her the initiative to continue with the designs.

Soon, Judy had developed about 35 different styles; enough to launch a photo shoot with the UNC-Chapel Hill fraternity of her second son, James. The relaxed cotton look, created at an affordable price, quickly became popular with the college crowd. The shoot generated plenty of on-campus interest and sales, leading Judy and James to believe that there was a pursuable market for cotton bow ties.

Upon graduating from Carolina, the opportunity to join the promising start-up was so appealing that James joined the High Cotton Ties team.

Our StoryAll of the cotton bow ties are hand-cut and hand-made by a professional sewing company in North Carolina. By committing themselves to classic southern mainstays such as tattersalls, ginghams, and madras plaids, High Cotton Ties supports the revival of southern textile history.

The folks at High Cotton Ties “are firm believers that bow ties should be a regular part of a gentleman’s wardrobe, not simply reserved for formal events. By avoiding novelties and embracing traditional patterns, we create our bow ties with the expectation that they will be worn often and be admired just as frequently.” Styles are always being released, including six new reversible patterns earlier in May as well as their full summer line in June.

High Cotton Ties works with a motto of C’s – ‘cotton, comfortable, clean, classic, and custom-made’. The ties are easy-to-wear and easy-to-wash, as tested many times through home-based stain washing and customers have raved about the wearability of the products, as they maintain professionalism without pretentiousness. College students can wear the ties to anything from college classes to football games or formal events, without concern for feeling out-of-place and with the confidence only a classic, quality design can provide.

The company has also developed a line of cummerbunds to meet the large market which had yet to find a solid, diverse provider. Products are always available for custom order, including the option to monogram the material for an even more personal touch. Entire wedding parties can work with the owners to develop the style of their choice, ensuring that their attire is one of a kind. Similarly, custom bow tie aficionados can develop their own custom bow tie and cummerbund to keep for themselves or share with a larger group.

One of the most unique services High Cotton Ties provides is the conversion of vintage pieces. If a customer has a special cotton shirt or pair of shorts that they cannot bear to part with, High Cotton Ties will use the fabric to make a new tie or cummerbund to reinvent the beloved piece.

● High Cotton Ties offers Washable, 100% Cotton Bow Ties & Cummerbunds hand-made in North Carolina.

● We offer group custom order bow ties and cummerbund sets perfect for (Min order of 8): ◊ Weddings ◊ Groomsmen’s Gifts ◊ Fraternity Formals ◊ Proms ◊ Debutante Balls

● For custom orders, the customer can work with us to discover the perfect fabric for their group. All bow ties are made in the High Cotton Ties style of classic southern mainstays.

● High Cotton Ties originally featured bow tie conversions where we turned a customer’s cotton item into a single bow tie or cummerbund set, depending on the amount of fabric. Anything from a button-down to a pair of madras shorts, conversions make a great conversation piece.

● High Cotton Ties can monogram their cummerbund sets for a truly personalized gift.

The company has found a market for ‘something bold, fresh and new’ in the world of men’s fashion. It is certainly worth talking about. The driving question to customers, rather than “What will you choose?” is more “What would you like to see?” – a policy that gives people the choice to make themselves happy, rather than being forced to select from a limited number of options. By tapping into the passionate bow tie communities and college campuses on Facebook, High Cotton Ties has been able to market strictly via ‘word-of-mouth’ and has been able to generate a bit of a “buzz” when it comes to who will be next company to capture the attention of southern markets.

The company has been hard at work since it went live on March 27th. Judy has been sewing all of her life so she is able not only to guide and direct her sewing staff but also hold them to a high standard of rigorous quality control. Judy stands true to the company mission that, “Now more so than ever, consumers require more out of their products, which is why we offer washable products produced from some of the finest cotton fabrics available, as we feel it speaks to our cost-effectiveness and durability. Simply put, we not only trust that you will fall in love with our bow ties and cummerbunds, but we also expect them to become a long standing member of your wardrobe.”

James, a recent graduate of UNC’s entrepreneurship program, has always wanted the opportunity to help a start-up, and High Cotton Ties represents a greater social mission he believes all businesses must have in order to succeed.

With High Cotton Ties, a family feel resonates when you hear their story. Maybe it is because of the way their company grew straight from the traditions their household kept, or perhaps it is from the way they have decided to do business, but either way, every customer seems to become a part of the High Cotton Ties family the moment they tie one around their neck. Customers are encouraged to post pictures where they ‘have been spotted wearing a HCT tie!’ and when you contact High Cotton Ties, you can rest easy knowing that you will be talking directly to Judy or James, the way they believe customer service should be handled.

High Cotton Ties leaves their customers with this thought, “We understand that when you choose a bow tie to wear, it will end up saying a lot about your character. It is our hope that High Cotton Ties will be able to extend itself to our customers as a helping hand to properly reflect their individuality, in good conscience and in good style. Knowing that all of our products represent the revival of a southern tradition, we are more than happy to welcome you as a part of our mission.”

Our Campus Representative Program plays an important role in the growth of our company. We are taking our online store and literally putting it on the ground at more than 50 great Universities and College campuses nationwide. In the most straightforward sense, we are bringing our product directly to the people we believe will enjoy it most.

This strategy is all about introducing our product to new markets, an endeavor we are willing to undertake because we believe our company has a strong product to offer, and we know that many people have yet to be introduced to us. That is why we are planning a sponsored event each semester at each campus. We will be sending you a package of materials for your upcoming events that will help you showcase our brand to these new markets in a more direct way, putting our products and giveaways right in their hands to see for themselves. This should help everyone see the quality of our product and recognize what makes separates our company from the rest; a commitment to the South. The bottom line is that no one really likes to be told why they should buy a new product, but if you can introduce the brand in a fun way that peaks their interest, they’ll want to learn more about High Cotton Ties, and you’ll be there to showcase our products and culture. Surely, the way you choose to represent the company will be the driving force behind this customer’s impression of our brand, which may very well be the reason why they decide to make a purchase. It is in our best interest to make sure we have prepared each campus representative to take on that responsibility.

Campus Representative Program

1) You must know how to tie a bow tie! Check out our site to learn how to tie one and be able to teach others easily.

2) After studying the material in this packet, you will be contacted to deliver a practice pitch of the company to the Campus Representative Coordinator, so practice up and be prepared.

3) Once you learn all of the material, this is hardly a demanding job. We will keep you updated with new product releases, catalogs, samples, so you can continue to spread the word. Everything beyond that will be a collective effort to set up an event on your campus.

4) We don’t like the idea of a uniform, but we do want you all to reflect our company properly, so use your best discretion. Fellas, we will be asking you to wear one of our bow ties every time you choose to promote our products, so consider this your first modeling gig.

5) As always, you are expected to behave like the gentleman or lady that you are and represent High Cotton Ties to the best of your ability on and off of the job. Dress well, be on time, be patient, and be friendly. We operate on a one-strike policy.

Campus Rep Expectations:

A Good Pitch…is made by being comfortable with your material. Channel the confidence John Stewart or Stephen Colbert use on their shows; they are believable because they are one step ahead of their audience and know what they’d like to say. Also, practice doesn’t hurt, because speaking naturally is effective. We want to get our listeners excited about our product in the best way possible by telling them, truthfully, why our product is worth purchasing and what separates our brand from the competition.

Putting a Good Pitch in PerspectiveNowadays, we run across so many advertisements that we’ve learned to tune most of them out. So, when we are given the opportunity to capture the undivided attention of a customer, we consider that a blessing.

If you only had one minute, how would you describe our company to someone?

All things considered, I guess somewhere deep down in our hearts we believe that we are a company worth talking about...thus this Campus Representative Training Manual. We feel that our company represents a great southern lifestyle and are a niche brand offering quality products that are hard to find in today’s market; we hope you feel the same way as well. We love the fact that even as a bow tie company, we still have the priveledge of being a lifestyle brand to many, with our name recognition, story, and products all working together to create this culture we are so fond of and live out everyday. Not many bow tie and cummerbund companies would decide to launch a campus representative program as quickly as we have, but we know how this program will speak to our company’s youth and help us introduce the brand on your campus. We want to begin expanding our name base and that means we need you to get others excited about High Cotton Ties when you have the opportunity.

When James spoke with you on the phone, you may remember him telling you that he wanted to be present at each trunk show in person last year. It is tough to let go of your baby and let someone else tell their own story in your place. It is up to you to formulate your own story on how High Cotton Ties relates to you and your lifestyle, so you can properly give an effective and convincing pitch. Take the information you have been given here and apply it to your life and see what comes out. No matter what, it is important that you speak intelligently and passionately when speaking on our brand’s behalf because we believe that it is a blessing to share our company with others, and that is something worth getting excited about.

Now here‘s the good stuff. Since we expect you all to invest a reasonable amount of time getting to know our company and all the intricacies of how we operate, we thought it would only be appropriate to reward you all accordingly. Like we said, we expect this to be a rewarding experience, so here goes:

Everyone—will receive 20% discounts + free shipping on selected products each season when you plug in your designated campus representative code “Campus2011”. We encourage you to take advantage of this discount as much as you like, but we will know if it is being abused.

Based on the feedback from last year’s campus representatives, we believe that the benefits properly match the amount of work required. We want you all to feel encouraged to do a good and thorough job and maintain a high-standard when you are visiting with people. We are not planning on being a fly-by night company, and we hope to build relationships throughout your campus and be there for years to come. You will play a major role in facilitating that for us, and we thank you very much for that. If you have questions about any of our benefits or policies, feel free to contact James Hill at [email protected] because we want to make you feel like your work is being properly compensated and we hope to keep you motivated to go out and spread the word about our company in the best way possible.

Also, as we expand keep an eye out for internship and job offerings. The campus represen-tative program is a great way to get in on the ground floor of a company like this, because relationships and experience always go a long way. To be cliché, we would like to think that with a program like this, the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it, and we are looking for people that think in the company‘s best interest and notify us about any areas of opportunity for High Cotton Ties on your campus.

◊ There is an undeniable connection between cotton and the South— for better or worse cotton is a part of southern heritage, but we like to think that our product delivers a classic look that is in tune with the region where it is produced, which is something that is becoming rare nowadays.

◊ There is no need to dry clean our 100% cotton bow ties— Throw them in the washer and dryer, and use a warm iron if needed. They are affordable, socially conscious, and will save you money—that is a pretty good bottom line.

9) What does the boll weevil logo represent?

At the most basic level, we feel that the boll weevil—with its intrinsic connection with Southern Cotton History is a great example of the South‘s patience, resilience, steadfastness, and persistence. Although the boll weevil destroyed farmer‘s crops year-in and year-out, they all continued to fight the infestation until it became fully eradicated. Although many, if not all, of these plots of land are gone now, we feel like we have the stage to play a fairly large role in the revival of southern textile history and we hope to show the same resilience in our attitude and approach. We know by choosing to keep our opera-tions local in North Carolina, we have immediately put ourselves in the minority, and there is nowhere else we would rather be.

10) Will you ever consider making long neck ties?

Currently we have no interest in producing neck ties.

11) What is High Cotton Ties’ return policy?

We like it when people trust each other, and we know you all are no different. We accept any merchandise purchased on the website up to 30-days afterwards with no questions asked and no answers expected. We are more than willing to do everything it takes to make our customers happy.

12) Is www.highcottonties.com a secure website?

Yes! We operate a secure website. All of your information is safe and will never be given out.

13) I need a bow tie this weekend; can High Cotton Ties send me one before then?

We offer overnight shipping for $25

15) How much does the monogramming service cost? What are the policies like?

$10 for one monogram, $15 for two monograms. When the monogram service becomes available online, customers will fill out the customization sheet to their liking and then their order will be sent to them in 10-14 days.

16) When I contact High Cotton Ties, who will I be speaking with?

When you contact High Cotton Ties, you will always talk to a real human being (...imagine that). The owner Judy, and co-owner James, try their best to handle all of the customer service inquiries and requests themselves.
