Term 4, 2018 has continued to see students wearing our Academic Uniform respectfully and arriving on time withessential items from the booklist at Years 7, 8 and 9 on most occasions. Students are focused on successfully completingSemester 2 CFATs, CATs, exams, tests and homework aiming to advance to the next year on solid ground. A very busyterm ahead with lots of rewards that make it all worth it. Our final Dimboola Campus Assembly will be held this Monday 10th December at 9.00am in the Multi Purpose Hall. Parents and or guardians are welcome to attend.

All Dimboola students excitedly squeezed into the multipurpose hall to view a performance of ‘The Hurting Game’ byBrainstorm Productions. Starting with video game moves which reminded a lot of students of Fortnite, the actors conveyedimportant messages, like being yourself and not acting rashly. They showed the ways in which quick decisions, especiallythose connected to peer pressure, can have a lasting impact on your life and those around you. This performance was funny, thought provoking, and thoroughly enjoyed!

Cyber Bullying Incursion

Dream time Walk

As part of their study of the novel, ‘Sister Heart’, Year 7 classes headed to Birrarung Marr to learn about local indigenousculture. Our Dreaming Walk took us along the banks of the Yarra, seeking out local bush tucker and learning more aboutthe effects of government policy on Koorie people. We were also able to handle a range of artefacts from local mobs, including some beautiful soft possum fur. Thanks to our local guides for sharing their culture with us all.

Students from Dimboola Rd were invited to be part of a Department of Education focus group on bullying. Students had thechance to give feedback on new bullying resources being developed for young people to access. They even gave exciting newideas about how to get the message out that bullying is never tolerated. Thanks for your valuable input, team.

Bullying Focus Group

This Term Year 9's headed over to the Town Park Senior Campus to view a performance of their Term 4 text, ‘Romeo andJuliet’. Everyone was impressed by the actors’ skill in changing characters, and particularly the comic relief they brought to theplay. Seeing Shakespeare brought to life gave a new perspective, and helped the challenging language seem less of a barrier.

On Friday 2 November, the 8A class from Dimboola Road undertook the Mission to Mars at the Victorian Space ScienceEducation Centre. Students worked as a team and used their problem-solving skills to successfully complete a geologicalsurvey of the Mars surface. Students wore specially-designed spacesuits and acted as astronauts, mission controllers andresearch scientists. Students acted as Mission Control officers to communicate via radio to the astronauts on the surface, and wereresponsible for their safety and the success of the scientific mission. Astronauts collected equipment, de-pressurised in the airlock, and stepped onto the Martian surface, where they collected soil and rock samples, drilled an ice core and conducted both thermal and seismic surveys. After returning to earth, and after lunch, the students analysed their samples in the laboratory to discover moreabout the planet Mars and its history.

On Friday 19th October, four of our year 10 students (Nansi Odisho, JamilaRumints, Helen Rasho and Blinda Sako) had the opportunity to participate in theJetstar High Flyers Program at the Jetstar Training Facility in Airport West. Thisprogram run by the Australian Business and Community Network aimed toencourage female students to pursue Science and Mathematics subjects in VCEthrough learning about some of the career pathways in aviation that are availableto them. It was a fantastic day and the students left feeling inspired and excitedabout the many career options in Science, Technology, Engineering andMathematics. Throughout the High Flyers Program excursion we learned about the differentareas a person can work in for Jetstar. These areas included flight operationengineering, IT and Digital communications. The employees talked to us abouttheir experiences, what they studied and how they became pilots, engineers and ITtechnicians. The crew also took us on a tour around the building and we had alook at the flight simulators the pilots use to practice flying a plane. They alsotaught us about the safety procedures we need to follow during emergencysituations. The program was helpful because it shows that nothing is impossibleand females can be as good as males. It encourages females to work in thesedomains. We had fun talking to staff members and meeting new girls from differentschools. As someone who attended the program I would highly recommend it!” –Nansi Odisho (Year 10)
