HCE Connection Manitowoc County Association of Home and Community Education
April 2017- May 2017
President’s Letter…
Well, March has sure come in like a lion this year. We
were spoiled in February so knew it had to happen. The March
1st program, “Keeping Our Brain Fits as We Age”, has been
rescheduled for Wednesday, May 10th at 1:00 PM at the
Extension Office. We thank Kim Jackquart Franzen for working
with us to get the program out to our members.
We are happy to announce we have an intern FLE and
her name is Kya Diehl. She started March 1st and is eager to help
us. I am sure information and knowledge about many topics will
be shared both ways.
I hope everyone is working hard on their cultural arts
entries. I know I am trying hard to get one thing done but it’s
going to be close. I have a couple of other items already
finished. This is my first try entering so will see how it goes. I
am getting butterflies in my stomach just writing about it and it is
still weeks away.
Keeping track of your HCE hours will be coming to an
end soon and I hope is going well. You keep track of hours until
May 31st. I will start accepting your sheets at the Salad Supper
on May 3rd. the deadline is June 5th for calculation. Remember,
the hours need to be HCE related like: club meetings, focus
lessons or Stitches of Love projects. We do lots of things all
year round but when you get all the sheets together and start
adding it up it boggles the mind. This is great for our members
but is also helpful to show the county and state officials how
much we do and how much it is worth to support HCE at all
levels of government. We do not get any direct monies but
having staff at our local UW Extension office for support to
make our lives and the community better.
State conference is coming up in September in
Wisconsin Dells. If anyone is interested in attending let myself
know sooner, rather than later. There are some slight changes to
- 2 -
the room rates that may not be in the State newsletter so I want to
make sure everyone is aware before they register.
Well, let’s all think positive and spring will be here
soon. Our flowers and gardens will need our attention. Start
planning and see everyone soon.
Amy Kohlmann,
Manitowoc County President
Advisor’s Letter…
Dear HCE members,
I want to take a moment to introduce myself as your
new advisor! I started my role as Family Living Educator on
March 1st and am very exciting to be getting my feet wet!
Previously, I worked as a Community Wellness Coordinator at
the Fond du Lac Family YMCA. I have a degree in Community
Health Education from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse
and a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Illinois
at Chicago. I spent time working and traveling around the
country including Seattle and Traverse City, Michigan before
settling back home in Wisconsin a few years ago. I am new to
the Manitowoc area but grew up down the road in Kohler. My
husband, Andrew, and I recently bought a house in Kohler and
are settling into a new home and new jobs all at once. I had the
pleasure of meeting Amy Kohlmann and learning more about
the history of HCE and what this group is currently doing. To
say I was impressed is an understatement! I took a look
through the roster and was blown away when I saw members
join dates back to the 1950s! Your passion and dedication for
your volunteer work is clearly evident.
One reminder as we move forward is to please try to get
information for the newsletter to Amanda electronically. I
know this may be a challenge for some so we are going to
brainstorm some ways to make it more accessible and efficient
for everyone. I look forward to meeting more HCE members
- 3 -
and providing guidance along the way. I have a feeling I may
learn a few things from all of you as well.
Take care!

In January the book readers read the
book Flip and Flop by Dawn
Apperly. Black paper plates were
turned into penguins. The
preschoolers added eyes, a beak,
and sponge painted
white tummies on them.
For February we read I’m Not Sleepy, It’s a book about a baby
owl. Some groups made paper owls with celery printing while
other groups made owls with the children’s handprints.
If You Give a Dog a Donut by Laura Numeroff was the book
read for March. The children put pictures from the book in
sequential order. They made pink donuts by painting paper

plates with a hole in the middle and adding sprinkles.
Giraffes Can’t Dance was the book read in April. Giraffe faces
were made out of yellow paper plates with brown spots painted
on them.
Finally in May the book Chicka, Chicka, Boom,Boom was
read. Some groups made a tree out of toilet paper tubes stuffed
with green tissue paper. Other groups made a flat coconut tree
with a paper trunk and
green paper leaves. Alphabet letters were glued on both trees
going up and down the trees.
Thanks to Judy Yanda and her Zander/Maribel Club for the
Head start book bags this year.
More readers are needed. Contact Linda Verlinden to read for
the 2017- 2018 school year. Her phone number is 683-3432.
Two children and one adult scholarships are available to family
members of current HCE members. Forms are due by April 1st so
get your information going. Forms are available at the office or on

A Note from Fall NE District Meeting
A note from Calumet County HCE about their book
drive in October 2016. In November 2016, 3173 books were
donated to the Luther Burbank Elementary School in
Milwaukee. 87.67% of Burbank’s students are economically
disadvantages. The school is using the books to fil their library
along with incentives for award programs and as gifts for
children so they continue reading in their home environment.
A thank you note was received form Pam Locket, Library Aide
at Luther Burbank Elementary School with the closing line
reading “Your group is amazing. All I can say is keep on
making the world a better place because you have made a huge

impact right here in our own state. I am sending each one of
you a huge hug with my sincerest thanks.”
The monies collected at the NE District Fall meeting
were donated to the Hope North School in Uganda and were
used to purchase books for their library. Donations and
proceeds from the silent auction all went to the school. T0
learn more about the Hope North, Google
www.HopeNorthSchool-Uganda.
Thank you to all the individuals and County HCE
associations who contributed books and monies to the WAHCE
NE District Book Drive to make it such a success. Your
generous donation has impacted lives in our won state and the
county of Uganda that truly are making an impact in a life of a
child.

Spring is in the air. In spite
of snow, robins are in the yard and
Pussy Willows in bloom along the
railroad track. Meanwhile, our HVE
group continues to have interesting
Study Focus meetings with good
daytime attendance. Invite a friend
or relative to attend with you. Later this month, I will be giving a
presentation about HCE at a church’s Women’s Group. I’m looking
forward to this and would be pleased to do more.
I looked up membership from past years and was surprised
to see we had 775 members in 1986. Gradually, we have gone down
to 131 for 2017. Many of our good members have died and new
ones are not joining. Keep asking your friends and continue to wear

HCE pins and clothing. Our state outreach focus this year is to find
and recruit retired and newly retired for HCE membership.
It’s early to bring up the Manitowoc County Fair, August 22-
27, but time goes by quickly. Consider volunteering with
Manitowoc County Soil and Water Conservation Department to do
nitrate screening. Neighboring counties have had problems with
well water contamination. Let HCE help to protect our children,
adults, and animals.

Twenty-eight attendees heard Abbey Bubolz, a
registered dietitian from Holy Family Memorial, explain the
difference between food allergies and food intolerances. It was
eye-opening to hear all of the foods that can caus reactions in
the form of an allergy or food intolerance. Abbey graciously
sent her presentation to the Extension office to be added to our
web page. To get her presentation, please go to the Manitowoc
County UW Extension homepage. Click on Family Living,

Amy Kohlman, President, called the meeting to order at 6:34 P.M. Ellen Stecker gave the welcome and thanked Judy Yanda for the pretty cake decorations. Helen Isaacson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Homemaker’s Creed. Linda Verlinden called the roll call of HCE Clubs and individual members. There were 77 club members, 14 individual members and 3 guests for a total of 94 people. The minutes of the fall HCE meeting were approved as printed in the newsletter. Phyllis Hickman gave the financial report and it was approved as printed. The group voted to split the monies 50/50 for the water filter project and the Heifer Project. We also voted to buy 2 stoves for Nicaragua. Nancy Oehldrich gave her report on programming. We had an average of 39 people attending our study focus sessions this year. Please let her know if you have any suggestions for topics or speakers for next year. Cindy Christianson thanked us all for the many spices collected for the 4 food pantries in our county. Teri Zuege-Halvorsen gave everyone a yellow sheet called “21 Day Gratitude Challenge.” It listed one topic for each of the 21 days of May that we could focus on and give thanks. We can go to www.kindspring.org/challenge for more information. The idea behind the challenge is that happiness is a choice and breeds success. Let’s take up the habit and be happier in our lives! Sherri Ewert gave the scholarship report. This year’s scholarship winners are Erin Scholz and Rachel Winter. Erin is

On October 3 we will learn about “Desserts Around the World.” She will be attending the ACWW Conference in Great Britain in August. She thanked us for our monies for the water filter project and for the stoves. Shirley Oswald passed around the clipboard for volunteering to do water testing at the county fair. There is now new equipment for water testing. She thanked the people who made caps for the cancer patients. Wilma Rehbein told us to “blow your horn for HCE.” This means to wear your HCE pins to advertise our organization. She told us our county HCE has 141 members with 7 new members this year. We should put our HCE label on all sewing items. Diane Lau stated that she and Ann DeMark are leaving the newsletter committee. New people are needed to take this over so we will continue to have a newsletter. June 30th is the deadline for the summer newsletter. Linda Verlinden showed some art projects done for Reading Buddies at Head Start this year. More readers are always needed. The time commitment is 1 hour per month October-May. Call her at 683-3432 to volunteer. Judy Yanda and the Zanders/Maribel Club were thanked for sewing the book bags for Head Start. There were 19 entries for our cultural arts show tonight. Judy Yanda thanked all the participants and gave out the ribbons. Carol Voelker won the People’s Choice Award. On Sept.7 we will make cobbler aprons and Christmas decorations at our creative craft fair. Amy Kohlman told us that the Spring East District HCE

meeting in Sturgeon Bay stressed writing down HCE volunteer hours. Please fill out the volunteer hour worksheet which is in tonight’s program by June 1. The State HCE Conference will be held Sept. 12-14 at Stevens Point. Kewaunee Co. has a bus going to the state conference. Let Amy know if you will be using the bus. There is a new state committee on children’s literacy. They will be grant writing for money. Our county can apply for this too. We were all invited to the Fall East District HCE Meeting. It will be October 20th at Brillion at the Cobblestone Restaurant. There will be a book drive. We will donate books to a foreign country. Cheryl Domrath told us that the HCE pillow cases will not only be given to hospitals but also to Hope House and the Domestic Violence Center. Our Fall Manitowoc Co. We are looking for used items like old zippers, buttons, piece of elastic, ribbon and beads. A study of the project and its implication will be done and presented to the members.
Dress and pillowcase kits are available for pick up and sew. Other projects you might consider are sewing, knitting or crocheting a lap robe. Suggested sizes 30" - 36" x 42"-48".
Please continue to knit or sew cancer hats for chemo patients.
Thanks to Kathy Meyers, Doris Schuler and Judy Yanda for making chemo caps for local hospital distribution.
