St. David’s CancerCare is a coordinated and comprehensive approach to providing cancer services in Central Texas. St. David’s CancerCare is a partnership between St. David’s HealthCare and Sarah Cannon and is designed to provide integrated oncology care for patients within St. David’s HealthCare facilities. Sarah Cannon is the global cancer enterprise of HCA (Hospital Corporation of America) which facilitates a full range of physician-led, patient-centric integrated cancer care services in local markets and offers the highest level of quality standards, infrastructure, training and research for patients with cancer treated within affiliated partner facilities.

As part of St. David’s cancer care, the oncology floor at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center includes 24 patient beds dedicated to the specialized care of cancer patients; a surgical oncology unit with universal beds, which will allow patients to stay in the same room from post-surgery to discharge; and a general oncology unit.

St. David’s South Austin Medical Center recently opened the area’s only bone marrow transplant program featuring the Sarah Cannon Blood Cancer Center for patients with blood cancers. Now patients facing blood cancer are able to receive exceptional, comprehensive care close to home.

Blood CancersSt. David’s South Austin Medical Center provides patients in the Austin region with a wide array of cancer services, including blood and marrow transplants (BMTs), allowing them to receive specialized care in Austin. It features physicians and nurses specially trained to treat cancer patients, customized oncology technology, oncology-trained nurse navigators, as well as nutrition and education services for cancer patients. It also includes an apartment-style waiting room and private consultation rooms for family members.

The cancer unit also features the Sarah Cannon Blood Cancer Center at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, which is uniquely structured to address the needs of Central Texas by bringing together recognized physician leadership in oncology care from Texas Oncology and Texas Transplant Institute, a department of Methodist Hospital.

St. David’s South Austin Medical Center is also equipped with an outpatient clinic for adult patients who have blood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma- as well as those who have received or will receive a bone marrow transplant. The clinic provides patients with an outside entrance so they do not have to walk through the main hospital to get to the clinic while in an immune-compromised state.

In addition, The Sarah Cannon Blood Cancer Center at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center is currently performing autologous transplants- procedures in which a patient’s own stem cells are used during the transplant. It will begin offering allogeneic transplants- a procedure in which donor stem cells are used- in the near future.

Individuals in Austin who have blood cancers now have comprehensive care close to home. St. David’s HealthCare, in affiliation with the Texas Transplant Institute at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, the Sarah Cannon Blood Cancer Network, and Texas Oncology, collaborated to bring new treatment options to Austin, including the area’s only blood and marrow transplant program.

On February 5, 2014, the first adult hematopoietic stem cell transplant- a type of blood and marrow transplant (BMT) - was performed in the new comprehensive blood cancer center at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center. In 2014, 28 transplants took place with excellent outcomes with a 100% survival rate in its first year.

St. David’s South Austin Medical Center’s Blood and the Bone Marrow Transplant Program is committed to providing the highest quality of patient care. As a reflection of St. David’s commitment to care, the BMT Program is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT). FACT accreditation is granted to institutions that exceed the current standards in patient care and laboratory practices.

St. David’s offers a Very Immunocompromised Program (VIP), the only program in the area that focuses on promptly identifying and treating immunocompromised oncology patients arriving at the Emergency Room. The program provides special training to the ER staff to identify and address the unique needs of chemotherapy patients.

Bone marrow transplants using your own stem cells (autologous), or another person’s stem cells (allogenic) are potentially lifesaving treatments that include:

as well as fostering physician collaboration on these complex cases through market-wide tumor conferences and patient navigation through the multiple modalities and components of each treatment plan.

Surgical Oncology: St. David’s surgical oncologists have specialized knowledge of rare, unusual, or complex cancer types, and treat a high volume of patients with these conditions. They employ a host of minimally invasive and traditional surgical approaches to these diseases as well as NanoKnife and other ablative therapies where indicated.

Interventional Radiology: Interventional Radiologists use cutting edge radio-embolization treatments (Selective Internal Radiation Therapy), as well as chemo-embolization and Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA).

Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology: Medical oncologists offer specialized chemo-therapeutic treatment plans. Radiation oncologists deliver external and internal beam radiation therapy to referred patients.

Gastroenterology/Hepatology: Board-certified gastroenterologists offer advanced Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) to more precisely diagnose and stage cancers, as well as provide palliative drainage and stenting procedures for advanced malignancies.

NanoKnife St. David’s South Austin Medical Center recently became the first hospital in Austin to acquire and use the NanoKnife System for the surgical ablation of soft tissue in select patients with pancreatic, liver and bile duct cancer, as well as small bowel cancers.

The NanoKnife System uses a rapid series of direct, high-voltage, low-energy currents to create defects, or pores, in cell membranes, causing the cell to die. This process is known as irreversible electroporation. The electrical pulses are delivered through several needle-like probes placed into or around the targeted tissue under CT (computerized tomography) or ultrasound guidance. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

The NanoKnife System is a generation apart from other ablation modalities, which use extreme heat or cold, such as microwave energy, radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation. Unlike these ablative modalities, the NanoKnife System does not rely on extreme heat or cold; therefore, it poses little risk to injury to critical blood vessel structures.

THE LOCATION

AUSTIN, TX

Page 9: HCA St. David's Healthcare, BMT SL Manager Job Profile FINAL

In the past decade, the capital of Texas has grown steadily, attracting everyone from young urban professionals to artists and students. This rapid evolution is noticeable everywhere from the busy downtown area to trendy neighborhoods. Despite the growth, Austin, the live music capital of the world, has managed to maintain its mellow, small-town appeal. A perennial “Best Place to Live” winner is also a great place to visit, offering a range of attractions and activities and friendly localists.

Austin is definitely a city to be seen on foot. There are several areas in Austin that can be seen by walking. The University of Texas campus has lovely buildings, walkways and fountains. A half mile away is the Texas State Capitol building and grounds. Just down Congress Avenue is Sixth Street, which houses five blocks of

Page 10: HCA St. David's Healthcare, BMT SL Manager Job Profile FINAL

bars, clubs and restaurants. Further down Congress you will find the Warehouse District, which features restaurants, bars, and upscale shopping. Across from Lady Bird Lake and further down Congress, you will find SoCo with lively restaurants, music venues and local shops. On the first Thursday of every month, the neighborhood hosts a variety of street fairs with diverse art, food and music.

The State Capitol, the largest in the Unites States, will appeal to those interested in the political side of Austin. History buffs can head to the Lyndon Johnson Presidential Library and Museum. In 1982, Lady Bird Johnson created a Wildflower Center dedicated to preserving the native plants of North America. Other world class museums on or near the University of Texas campus include the Blanton Museum, the Texas State History museum and the Harry B. Ransom Center. The Ransom Center offers a diverse collection, including the famous “Scarlett” dress made of the green draperies of Tara.

Austin also offers recreational activities from golf to walking trails to canoeing in beautiful parks to swimming at Barton Springs. The shopping, restaurants and nightlife offer world-class appeal with a down-home Texas feel.

There are several loosely defined neighborhoods in Austin: North Austin, downtown, South Austin, West Austin, East Austin, UT Campus area, and West Lake Hills. Austin has grown tremendously in the last 20 years and is culturally diverse throughout the several neighborhoods it holds. North Austin is a simple suburban community with a short commute centrally anywhere in Austin. Downtown Austin is the hub of activity in the city with the vast majority of bars, upscale restaurants, and high-rise living. South Austin is the main attraction for individuals who are more artistically inclined, influenced, or nature-oriented with rolling hills, old oak trees, and homes circa 1920. West Austin is known as the upper middle class part of town, extending from the MoPac Expressway all the way to Lake Travis and includes oak and cedar trees, great views and curvy roads throughout the area. East Austin is decorated with charming, older homes dating back to the Victorian age. Closer to Lady Bird Lake, living in East Austin will bring you closer to downtown Austin but still give you a suburban feel. The UT Campus area is one of Austin’s oldest neighborhoods composed of older Victorian homes mixed with 1950’s cottages with a small town neighborhood feel. Lastly, West Lake Hills is a prestigious neighborhood located further south of downtown Austin with rolling hills, amazing schools, and a private feel that’s not too far from downtown Austin. Historic Zilker Park is Austin’s jewel of a nature center covering 358 acres. Live entertainment including Shakespeare in the Park and Broadway musical performed by Zilker Theatre Productions gives visitors a chance to enjoy top notch entertainment under the stars at the Beverley S. Sheffield Hillside Theater. Bring a blanket, cooler and kick back while you watch top-notch entertainment on a pay-as-you-wish basis. The world-renowned Austin City Limits festival rocks the park each year as well.
