Chairperson’s Report 2013/14   

Over the last year the Heritage Community Association Board of Directors has continued to work toward achieving the Association’s Vision of creating an inviting, vibrant, safe, healthy community where residents are proud of their environment, where partnerships are formed, where business is engaged, and where the Community Association is seen as a leading, innovative organization which is well respected, responding to the needs of the Heritage Community.   Board of Directors The HCA Board of Directors grew to 10 members this year. We have worked hard to recruit board members that fill specific roles in order to meet the needs of the association. We have also reached out to individuals to sit on our committees, who are not board members, in order to fill roles.   We went through a strategic board planning process in early 2014 to help highlight priorities for the year. Through the end of the fiscal year, the Board of Directors has been focusing on reviewing current policies and identifying gaps. A strategic work plan was developed and we will continue working to implement the plan into the coming year. Thanks to the strong leadership of our committee chairs and the work of our board members for moving this plan forward.   We have also created a new Board committee, the Business Outreach Committee, in order for HCA to update and complete a community business directory and to strengthen relationships with businesses and organizations in the neighbourhood.   Partnerships The Heritage Community Association is proud of the partnerships that assist us in achieving our vision. Thanks to the continued support of our major funding partners the United Way and the City of Regina, as well as our many program funding partners and community supporters.   Programming The Heritage Community Association offers many programs as a part of the mandate of the association. We are proud to carry on programs such as ‘Girls on the Move’, ‘Boys Movin’ On Up’, ‘Mainly Mother Goose’ , ‘Central Zone Soccer’, ‘PotashCorp REACH in the Parks’ and ‘Bellyfit’. We were also proud to offer new innovative programs such as the HIP: Heritage Improv Project. HCA received funds for this project from Creative Partnerships to hire two Artist Partners (Johanna Bundon and Jayden Pfeifer) to develop and deliver a series of improvisation workshops to at‐risk populations in the Heritage neighbourhood. We are partnering with a very diverse range of Community Partners including Thomson Community School, SOFIA House, Downtown Browne’s Emergency Youth Shelter and Phoenix Residential Society.  Staffing Our Executive Director Nikko Snyder went on maternity leave early in 2014 and the Board was tasked with finding someone to fill the Executive Director role for the next year. Kathleen Wilson was hired to carry on the mission of the HCA.   Your Board of Directors will continue to work toward achieving the Mission, Values and Mandate of the Association.  Josh Haugerud Board Chair 

Executive Director’s Report 2013/14  

It has been a very busy year for the Heritage Community Association. 2013/2014 saw a continued transition in leadership in the organization. Fresh in her role as the new Executive Director, Nikko Snyder showed tremendous leadership as she brought the organization through a major transition, bringing lots of new ideas and energy along the way. In the Fall of 2013, she announced she would be leaving for a one year maternity leave. I was hired in January as the Interim Executive Director. I was very fortunate to have almost two months of training with Nikko before she left on leave.   2013/2014 brought stability through our core funding from the City of Regina and the United Way. In 2013, the United Way announced that they would be reducing their funding levels in 2014. With strong leadership from Nikko and the Board of Directors through the application process, we were very fortunate to receive just a 5% cut in funding for 2014. We are very thankful for the ongoing support of both of core funding partners and the supports that they provide our organization. Without these key partnerships, HCA would not be able to continue the important work that we do in the community.   This year also brought continuation of much of our program funding. We were able to continue offering programs such as Girls On The Move, Boys Movin’ On Up, PotashCorp REACH in the Parks and the Good Neighbour Grant Program. Our annual community festival, the Under the Harvest Moon Festival, was also a huge success this year with increased community involvement and people in attendance. 2013/2014 also brought the launch of two new programs to the HCA. In partnership with the Regina Public Library, HCA launched Mainly Mother Goose, a program that promotes interactive play and literacy to young families in the neighbourhood. HCA also launched the innovative HIP; Heritage Improv Project. Funded through Creative Partnerships, HCA partnered with local artists Jayden Pfeifer and Johanna Bundon to run a series of improvisation workshops to at risk populations throughout the community.   The 2013/2014 fiscal year also saw the completion of Phase 1 of the It’s Time to Play Project, with the installation and unveiling of a new playground in Core Community Park. Through the support of the City of Regina and the Community Initiatives Fund, we were also able to reach our funding for the second and final phase of the project to replace the playground in Maple Leaf Park. This should be completed by the end of 2014. Thanks to all of the funding partners, community members and organizations that have helped make this project a reality since its launch three years ago.   We are in a great place heading into the new fiscal year. We recently hired Aeliesha Brooks as the new Community Outreach Coordinator to help us strengthen our communications and external relations. Also, with the help of the newly formed Business Outreach Committee, we also received a grant for a summer student to launch a business outreach project in 2014.   I’m very grateful to ongoing guidance and support of the Board of Directors, as well as all of the knowledge shared by Nikko. I am excited to continue my term as the Interim Executive Director into coming year.   Respectfully,    Kathleen Wilson Interim Executive Director

Finance/Audit Committee Chair’s Report 2013/14  Many activities were undertaken this year in accordance with the mandate of HCA and supported by the City of Regina and the United Way of Regina, our two principal funders.   In a year when the United Way reviewed its funded partners and the amount of funding each received, we were fortunate to receive only a 5% reduction in core funding.  Other activities that required outside funding were conducted in a timely manner, and the provided funds were used in a manner that was consistent with the project that the money was intended to support.    The Audited Financial Statements of the Association are available for any member to review. If you have any questions please feel free to ask Kathleen Wilson, our Executive Director, or myself.   We have ended the year with a surplus, the bulk of which is the result of funds raised for the It’s Time to Play playground revitalization project. These funds will be used in 2014 for the revitalization of Maple Leaf Park.   The financial position of Heritage Community Association Inc. as at March 31, 2014 and its financial performance and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not‐for‐profit organizations.   Jeremy Saxby Finance/Audit Committee Chair 

Nomination Committee Report 2013/14   The Heritage Community Association’s Board of Directors can consist of five to twelve members. Throughout the year a Nomination Committee appointed by the Board seeks out individuals to fill vacant positions. Candidates are interviewed and presented to the Board for appointment. All appointments that occur during the year are presented to the membership at the next Annual General Meeting of the Association for ratification.   The Board would like to say farewell to former Board members Tristan Culham, Dale Delainey and Constance Davidson.  We thank them for their contributions to our Board and wish them well in all of their future endeavours.  During the last year three new members have been appointed to the Heritage Community Association Board of Directors. We welcome Josh Jakubowski, Tyson Kennett and Todd Schwartz. Josh is returning to the organization after previously sitting on the Board of Directors. Todd and Tyson are new to the organization.  All of these appointments are being presented to the membership at the AGM on June 18th with our recommendation for ratification.   This will bring our current Board of Directors to a total of eight.   Dale Delainey Chair, Nomination Committee

HERITAGE COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION AT WORK IN 2013/2014  

Community Spirit  Heritage Art Park The Heritage Art Park, located at the corner of 11th Avenue and Halifax Street, is an evolving green space that features numerous artistic displays, edible and native trees, shrubs and over 1000 perennials. It is a unique project in Regina and an important resource in our community. Our vision is to maintain the Art Park as a safe place for community members to enjoy and to foster resident engagement by hosting regular cultural events in the park. Our partners at CUETS Financial/TD Canada Trust continue to be great supporters of the Art Park, both as volunteers and funders. In 2013 HCA received a TD Friends of the Environment grant to plant additional fruit trees and publish a brochure focused on the stewardship of Heritage community green spaces.   

Thomson School Community Garden A community garden on the Thomson School site was created in partnership with Thomson Community School to provide fresh vegetables for community participants and the school.  In 2009, the garden was further developed to include native fruit bearing trees and shrubs. The garden was not active in 2013.  

Day of Caring HCA regularly participates in United Way Days of Caring, which link corporate resources with community needs. The Heritage community has benefited greatly over the years from many caring and committed organizations that donate their time and energies to work on projects in Heritage. These dedicated corporate volunteers have accomplished everything from painting and cleaning to landscaping and weeding for the benefit of HCA and the community at large. In 2013, volunteers from TD Canada Trust, Stantec, and the 2370 Army Cadets participated in community clean ups in Heritage.  

Under the Harvest Moon Community Festival This autumn celebration is a registered Culture Days event that offers family‐friendly activities and cultural performances to all Heritage residents, free of charge. The festival fosters cohesiveness and community pride by highlighting, hands‐on and interactively, traditions of yesterday and today and moving the community towards its vision for tomorrow. Our 3rd annual festival in 2013 brought together over 300 community members and was made possible through the contributions of many volunteers and organizations, including SaskCulture, Culture Days Saskatchewan, SaskEnergy, Conexus Credit Union, and SaskTel.  

Heritage “Good Neighbour” Community Grant Program Community residents and neighbourhood businesses are encouraged to submit their idea for a “Good Neighbour” project. Winning submissions will receive up to $500 to assist them with their project. The goal of this program is to engage residents to become involved in helping to achieve a safe and connected neighbourhood.  

 

 

Sports, Culture & Recreation  

Girls On the Move On the Move is a nationally recognized physical activity program for girls.  HCA, in partnership with Thomson Community School, offers this weekly program to participants aged 9 to 14 years. The girls help coordinate the program by choosing physical activities of interest and activities that promote positive relationship building. This program, which is offered free of charge to girls from the Heritage community, is delivered in a non‐judgmental environment where the participants are encouraged to try a variety of physical activities including swimming, bowling, judo, and yoga. Funded by the Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program.   

Boys Movin’ on Up Movin’ on Up is the equivalent of On the Move for boys in the Heritage Community. It takes place weekly and offers opportunities to try new experiences and to build self‐confidence and social skills amongst peers. Funded by the Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program.  

Mainly Mother Goose HCA offers this free early childhood literacy program in partnership with the Regina Public Library. Parents and children 2 and under participate in nursery rhymes and singing to develop communication and literacy skills from a young age. Thanks to funding through the Government of Saskatchewan’s Saskatchewan Community Literacy Fund, we are able to offer free transportation and lunch as part of the program in 2014.  

 HIP: Heritage Improv Project In 2014 HCA is partnering with local artists Johanna Bundon and Jayden Pfeifer to develop a series of improvisation workshops designed specifically for various marginalized populations in the Heritage neighbourhood. The intention of the program is to use theatre exercises and tools to ignite participants’ communication and enhance expression. Through the program, the capacity for marginalized community residents to share their stories is enhanced; participants’ self‐esteem and confidence is supported; and participants’ appreciation of the arts is increased. This project was made possible through the support of Creative Partnerships. Creative Partnerships is a joint initiative of the Saskatchewan Arts Board and SaskCulture, supported by funding provided by the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust Fund for Sport, Culture and Recreation.  

 Support Services  

Regina Food Bank HCA is an agency for the Regina and District Food Bank. We are able to refer 50 orders per week to the Food Bank.   

PotashCorp Reach into the Parks Reach in the Parks is offered in partnership with Regina Education and Action on Child Hunger (REACH). This summer meal program provides a free nutritious bagged lunch to hungry children five days per week (Monday to Friday) at different sites across the city. It runs for six weeks over July and August.   

 

Community Engagement  Community Switchboard The purpose of the switchboard has been to provide community residents a means to communicate and report to HCA any relevant community concerns.  This can include general and specific issues that arise in the community, for example inadequate and unhealthy housing conditions, community safety issues, crime and drug related issues, graffiti, traffic control, etc. Once reported, specific issues are directed to the appropriate agencies or organizations for them to deal with and the follow up of these reports are monitored. The community switchboard can also be used to let HCA know about what works well in the community and what residents enjoy about living in our neighbourhood.  

Information Library HCA has created an Information Library where residents can easily access a wide range of educational information on social, health, community and economic programs relevant to the neighborhood.  

 

 Community Forums Information sessions are hosted by HCA on a variety of community related topics or concerns.    

 Community Newsletter The community newsletter Heritage Happenings keeps community residents in touch with programs, events, and community related news. A “business profile” is featured in the newsletter supporting local neighbourhood enterprise. The print newsletter is published 3 times per year and distributed to 4000 residents and businesses in the community by a team of volunteers. Community residents are encouraged to submit interesting stories or pieces of trivia about past or current happenings in the Heritage neighbourhood to the HCA office for consideration for the newsletter. Advertising is available. To keep in touch in between publications of Heritage Happenings, HCA also produces and distributes an email newsletter 12 times per year.  

Community Signs Two reader boards and one public notice board, housed in all three sections of the community, are used to inform residents of programs and services being offered by HCA. The signs are available for rent, $20 per week, per side.
