BRANCH NETWORK
Since the early 18th century, Bombay
(Mumbai) was one of India’s largest
trading cities and an important port of
the Eastern world. It was a centre for
energetic, hardworking persons possessing
entrepreneurial skills.
It was here in 1841 that a family trading
company by the name of Khoja Mithobhai
was established. Metals and other
commodities were traded with both Indian
and overseas based clients. In 1891 a
teenager, Habib Ismail, joined the business.
He would later prove instrumental in
transforming the company.
The business began to prosper under his
guidance and the name “Habib” soon
became synonymous with fair dealing,
honesty and trustworthiness. Upcountry
traders returning home began to deposit
their surplus cash with the company for
safekeeping, they also borrowed to cover
any shortfalls and it was not long before the
company began merchant banking.
Over time Habib Ismail’s four sons became
the new driving force behind the company.
In particular, Mohammadali Habib showed
leadership qualities and vision and
possessed the uncanny ability to extract the
maximum from those around him. He was
to play a very important role in the growth
and expansion of the Habib family business
as well as in its social and charitable
endeavours.
In 1941, Habib Bank Ltd was founded. It
adopted sound conservative principles in
line with international banking practice. A
strong emphasis was placed on maintaining
a high level of liquidity. Habib Bank in a
way filled the vacuum in banking in the
subcontinent by opening 38 branches in
India over a period of 7 years whilst other
Indian banks expanded only in the cities
and provinces where they originated.
COMPANY HISTORY
In this way Habib Bank Limited played
a pivotal role in bringing banking to the
middle classes.
In line with its progressive nature, the bank
began issuing its own gold medallions,
which Mohammadali Habib assured
customers were purer and heavier than the
stated weight. Many a story abound about
delighted customers finding their gold to be
heavier than the stated weight. Other gold
coins were compared with Habib’s and
found wanting. The Habib name became a
standard of quality.
The Head Office of Habib Bank was
transferred to Karachi in 1947 just before the
creation of Pakistan in the same year. The
Bank was to play a major role in providing
for the basic lending and financial services
needed in building the economy of the
new country. A number of branches were
set up to assist the development of industry
and trade.

The trustworthiness and reputation of the
Habib’s prompted the government to
entrust their treasury functions to Habib
Bank Ltd. In the best interests of the country,
Mohammadali Habib turned down this
lucrative and prestigious offer and instead
participated wholeheartedly in the creation
of the new National Bank of Pakistan and
State Bank of Pakistan. Experienced staff
from Habib Bank was transferred to support
these banks.
Mohammadali Habib passed away on 30
March 1959 aged 55. During his short life
this legend of a man created an extensive
empire encompassing banking, insurance,
shipping and numerous other industries.
In 1967 Habib Bank AG Zurich was
incorporated. Habib Bank Ltd was
nationalised by the government of
Pakistan in 1974. It was at this time that
two sons of Mohammadali Habib –
Hyder Mohammadali Habib and Habib
Mohammad (HM) Habib moved to
Switzerland and the UAE to build the
bank under conditions that were far from
favourable.
They were however pleasantly surprised
by the rich amount of goodwill that
international bankers and other
businessmen had for the name Habib. With
hard work they overcame many difficulties
and eventually created their own goodwill
and relationships upon which the next
generation of Habib’s could build. Ranked
amongst the world’s 600 banks, Habib Bank
AG Zurich has a solid foundation based on
a tradition of financial excellence and a
dedicated management team.
