H.B.O.C. TROPHY AND CERTIFICATE WINNERS

Preface

There are five documents making up the club history.

1. Club Officers, Cups & TrophiesThis is effectively the clubs “Trophy” boards. Lists are kept of the Club Officers, Life Members and Cup / Trophy winners for each year.Club Age Grade champions and Junior Certificates are not listed. You will need to go through the old Compass Points or Minutes of the AGM’s .

2. General TimelineLists the club officers and committee, subscriptions and map fees, maps, equipment and highlights for each year. (Note that the year in which a map was made may be wrong by one year.)

3. Major EventsLists the “Major” events the club has undertaken. This includes any NZOF badge events, Course Setting Competitions, Mountain Marathons etc., plus any “special” events run by HBOC (eg) Macpac Kaweka Challenge, Smedley Long O.

4. MappingLists all the maps made by the club.

5. ResultsLists all the HBOC event results, not including “major” or “badge” events.

The first attempt to record the clubs history was by Colin Tait in the mid 1980’s.The four documents making up this club history were first compiled in 1999 from the following sources…

Compass Points. There is a copy of every Compass Points magazine in the club archives. HBOC Minutes. The minutes for most meetings and AGM’s are in the club archives. Minutes for

1977 to 1981 are incomplete. Minutes for 1982 to November 1984 are missing. Presidents and Treasurers reports to the AGM’s held in the minutes and also seperately. Programmes and Results for major events. The archives are missing the programmes and results

booklets for most events prior to 1988. Colin Tait’s notes on the years from 1979 to 1985. Members memories.

2013 Derek Morrison Derek first made contact with the club at the A & P Showgrounds on 22nd July 1990 but it wasn‟t until he turned up at a Maraetotara event on 5th May 1991 that we saw the extent of the Morrison tribe. Since that day Derek has been actively engaged in the sport both competitively and as an organiser. When he started we had a fairly stable membership that would average about seventy per year. With Derek and Geoff‟s involvement in the schools we have seen that membership grow steadily to plateau for the last six years at around the three hundred mark! He has managed many NZO School teams and assisted with school teams to the World School Champs. Derek was the course setter for the World Cup races on The Slump in January 2013. (Also see Compass Points November-December 2013.)

2015 Pamela & Geoff Pamela has been club secretary (1997-1999), club Morrison treasurer (2000-2002, 2004-2006), and was on the

NZOF committee. She was the cartographer for a number of maps, including Smedley and Whanawhana and the driving force behind the clubs move to electronic controls and the SportIdent event management software. That led to her setting up and running the event system for every club event and the major events the club ran.

Geoff has been club president (1997-1999), club captain (2001-2008) and the NZOF Schools officer. He has fieldworked many maps for the club, including Smedley and Whanawhana. He has been heavily involved with developing schools and junior orienteering.

Geoff & Pamela setup and ran the clubs Summer Junior camps.

Brian Crawford Trophy

Awarded by the committee to the Setter and Vetter of the best event of the year.Donated by club member Hugh Forlong-Ford in 2012.

• The trophy is to be awarded for a single event during the year, not for setting multiple events• Both setter’s and vetter’s names are to appear on the trophy• The award is to be determined by the club committee, though they may appoint a sub-committee

to make a recommendation; the sub-committee does not need to be committee members• Only events under HBOC control can be considered, though this does include when HBOC is

hosting events (like NZOC) under the umbrella of a parental body• All courses at the event should be considered to determine the award, rather than a single

excellent course• Courses should be judged on criteria of suitability for the level of participants and their

enjoyment first, though other factors (eg the map) may be considered to “break ties”• If the committee cannot decide based on the courses set between two or more events, then no

trophy should be awarded for that year i.e. the trophy cannot be shared by two or more events

Vincent Cup

Awarded to the “Most improved Junior orienteer” as decided by the committee.Donated by the Vincent family in 2005. (Originally for “Most improved orienteer” but changed in 2009 to Junior orienteer as the Eames cup was introduced for Senior orienteers.)

Note: The award lists in Compass Points for 2009 and 2010 have created some confusion as to which cup is for Seniors and which is for Juniors. We assume the awards list for 2009 has the cups in the wrong order.

Clipper Challenge Trophy

Awarded for the “Most points scored at badge events”.Donated by Colin & Bev Tait in 1984 to encourage members to travel to badge events. Points are determined by the badge standard achieved at each event. Only applies to badge events in NZ, but does not include badge events organised by HBOC.

Colin didn’t have a name for the trophy until he called in on Ted Sapsford at his bookshop asking for ideas. Ted noticed a travel book with an old clipper sailing ship on the cover on the shelf behind Colin. What better name to conjure up thoughts of travelling than “Clipper”. It was Colin who pointed out the association to the orienteering “clipper” to Ted.

Special Event Trophies

The following trophies are awarded at the time of the event.

Wooden Spoons

The wooden spoons were made by Colin Tait, There were a set of two. Each wooden spoon was mounted on a square piece of particle board and the whole caboodle was nicely varnished. They came into being at the time when Orienteering Mountain Marathons were being held and the club had strong entries competing. They were

initially presented on site at the event and at its conclusion. As competitors ran in teams of two that was the reason there were two spoons. They were not designed to be given to the last HBOC team but to the one that made the biggest stuff (confessed to) up. The first event may have been the Tararua MM where Colin and Ted Sapsford were presented with them for doing a massive 180° that lost them the lead on their course. The spoons were brought back at each event and the most senior (admin wise) member of the club present did the honours. Once the MM’s died the spoons were reinstated for the Smedley Long O’s and as competitors ran as individuals they were given to the two individuals who made the two biggest stuff ups. As these events were held close to the end of the year the presentation may have been given at the AGM, but were still an informal trophy. I am pretty certain that in 1995 I gave Peter Watson and Maurice Lloyd the honours. The following year was Peter’s Rogaine at Smedley and I am not sure who got them there. That was the last time I have any personal knowledge of them but to have retained the intent of the trophy’s they should have been carried through the club and away Rogaines and in hindsight become an official stuff up award and been properly recorded as opposed to trusting competitors to have returned them in good faith. They should have been at the Tuki Tuki 3 hour event in May 2009.
