HISTORY

Habib Bank Limited started its commercial operation from Bombay on August

25, 1941 with a Fixed capital of 25,000 rupees. The four Brothers formed Habib

Bank namely Ahmed Habib, Dawood Habib, Muhammad Ali Habib and Ghulam Ali

Habib. The Bank had only Rs 1.03 crore by way of advances and invested Rs. 12

lakhs in government securities.

After the creation of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam, Muhammed Ali Jinnah,

impressed by its initial performance asked the Bank to move its operations to

Karachi. Quaid-e-Azam on December 29, 1945 opened a current account with HBL.

He also opened an account with Habib Bank Limited in the name of Muslim League

Bihar relief fund.

Habib bank survived its most crucial stage from 1941 to 1947 and has

overcome numerous challenges. After independence and the shifting of Headquarter

from Bombay to Karachi it faced much opposition and new responsibilities which

were handled superbly by the bank. Efforts were made to increase the standards of

service to the people, increasing banking hours and improving the physical

appearances of the branches making it popular amongst the people. Habib Bank

was the first to recruit and train Muslims in the banking profession. The first banking

Training scheme was started by the bank in 1946. In 1948 there were only 23

branches of Pakistani Banks in the country. For this purpose HBL pioneered its first

training programme in 1946 and many other programs since then onwards.

It was Habib Bank which took the credit for the transfer of hundreds of crores

of rupees from India to Pakistan. The Habib were the first to start the facilities like

Gift Cheques Rupee, Travelers Cheques, Students Saving Schemes, Workers

Saving Scheme, Drive in Banking, Mobile Banking, Credit Card System, Executors

and Trustee Service, Short Term, and Long Term Loan Schemes for small

businessmen. This was followed by mechanization and modernization of branches.

Habib Bank celebrated its silver jubilee in 1966. the foundation stone of Habib Bank

Plaza, the head office building of the bank, the tallest building in Pakistan at that

time, was also laid by the then President of Pakistan, Field Marshal Muhammad

stamps to appreciate Habib Bank's efforts for the stable economy of the country. It

came out with the new image of "Best example of better service" (Behter Khidmat Ki

Behtareen Misal) in 1966.

Major expansion in the branch network was done in 1973 when a policy was

adopted according to which there should be one branch for a population of 5000

people. On 1st January 1974 Habib Bank entered a new phase with the

nationalization of Pakistani banks. All Pakistani commercial banks were nationalized

and merged into five major banks i.e. Habib Bank, National Bank, United Bank,

Allied Bank and Muslim Commercial Bank. Foreign Banks were excluded from the

law of nationalization. The whole concept of commercial banking in Pakistan

changed focusing to help Small industries, traders and farmers.

Medal’ and a certificate in reorganization of its valuable contribution towards the

economic development of Turkey.

provide truly Islamic mode of Investment opportunities. HBL completed 50 years of

operations, its golden jubilee in August 1991. It is the first Pakistani bank to celebrate

become a partner of the business.

Three broad categories of NIB financing are as under

Financing by lending

Lending with service charges (Ju’ala)

Lending with out service charges (Qarze Hasana)

Trade related Modes of Financing:

M ARK - UP (B AI -M UAJJAL )

should deliver the goods to the buyer while the buyer agrees to pay the price at a

later stage. Repayment can be lump sump or in installment at marked up price.

M ARK D OWN

This mode of finance is used for discounting/ purchase of bill of exchange and/ or

documents. The profit is secured from the difference in the face value and the

marked down price of the bill.

L EASING

Two types of leasing

Operating Lease

Financial Lease

There are two parties in lease financing Lessor (The bank) and Lessee (the

customer). Lessor should purchase the fixed asset (Plant and machinery) and shall

retain its ownership. The lessor should give possession of the asset to the lessee for

use. The lessee pays a rent of the asset for a specified period. The leasing banks

are generally less concerned about financial account of the lessee.

H IRE P URCHASE (B AI -S ALAM )

Under this finance banks cater to the fixed investment needs of various sectors. The

assets are purchased on joint ownership basis. Repayment includes a part of the

principal and a share of profit earned from the assets. It is so adjusted that at the end

SWOT ANALYSIS

SWOT is the abbreviation of four words these are S stands for strength W

stand for weaknesses O stands for opportunities and T stand for threats. Strength

and weaknesses are the internal factors of the organization and it also known as the

micro factors but the opportunities and threats are the external factors and these are

known as the macro factors micro factors are controllable factors but the macro

factors are not controllable.

This is the theory that when ever the organization form then they have to

come to know about their strength the they come to know about their weaknesses

then the have to find out their opportunities and then they come to know about their

threats but according to the latest theory the word SWOT is know as WOTS

according to them they said that a new organization never come to know about their

strengths first always they come to know about their weaknesses first then they

come to know that what opportunities they have in the particular sector and then they

have come to know about their competitors and at the last they come to know about

their strengths. So the easiest way to know about any organization is the SWOT

O PPORTUNITIES

Huge untapped market potential in consumer banking.

Opportunity for developing value added services combined with corporate

banking relationships, cash management services to large and medium sized

corporate clients.

Large international network which principally focuses on trade finance with

Pakistan can be utilized to tap trade activities in other markets. In addition,

services such as cross border / offshore financing for corporate customers

can be enhanced.

Benefits of recent expenditure on technology and branch upgrades soon to

start flowing.

Increasing regulatory support for universal banking activities. Stability in

Afghanistan leading to increased banking opportunities in Pakistan,

Afghanistan and in Central Asia.

Further reduction in intermediation costs possible, with improving technology.

Possibility of transferring non performing assets

THREATS

Following are the threats faced by the HBL these are almost the same threat,

which is faced by the other bank also because the threat is the micro factor, and it is

not in the hands of the organization it’s the environmental factor.

Competitors

HBL have the threat from their competitors in their main competitors are

Standard chartered, ABN Amro, Muslim Commercial Bank etc. because to compete

each other they have to launch the different products and different things to attract

their customers.

Government policies

The main thing that is the threat for the HBL is that is the government policies

that in the political situation like our country no one does not know that what going to

be happen in future not future perception. Same as the government that no one

71

Page 72: HBL-Final

knows that what type of policies they have in future so this is the biggest threat for

every industry.

Concentration risk

Concentration risk is high as major exposure is towards the textile sector and

government, as is the case with most of the Nationalized Commercial Banks

Consolidation

Consolidation in the banking sector resulting in increased competition.
