FOREWORD Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), was founded in 2010 to continue fulfilling QF’s vision of unlocking human potential.

HBKU is a homegrown research and graduate studies university that acts as a catalyst for positive transformation in Qatar and the region while having a global impact.

Located within Education City, HBKU seeks to provide unparalleled opportunities where inquiry and discovery are integral to teaching and learning at all levels, utilizing a multidisciplinary approach across its focus areas.

The university provides an array of graduate programs through its College of Islamic Studies, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Science and Engineering, College of Law, College of Health and Life Sciences, and College of Public Policy.

HBKU is also home to three research institutes – Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), and Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) – which together with the colleges are at the forefront of efforts to seek novel solutions to grand challenges facing Qatar and the region.

ABOUT QATARQatar is a peninsula located on the western coast of the Arabian Gulf. The country enjoys a high standard of living, and is considered a regional center for global conferences that aim to address issues such as international diplomacy, finance and economics, energy and sustainability, entrepreneurship, sports, and media.

Situated in one of the fastest-growing economic regions in the world, Doha is a diverse city that is home to a multicultural society. Qatar is one of the safest countries in the world, with a very low crime rate and a family-friendly environment.

HBKU INNOVATION CENTERThe HBKU Innovation Center is a pioneering initiative that is designed to foster entrepreneurship and creativity. The hub aims to serve as a platform for connecting and sharing ideas, people, resources, and expertise – providing a space for collaboration in one dedicated area. Designed to bring together members of the community and leaders in start-up ecosystems, the center provides multifaceted educational and training opportunities for QF students and staff through seminars, workshops, boot camps, and more. Acting as a catalyst for the development of research-based, innovative ideas towards commercialization, the HBKU Innovation Center supports the QF community through a myriad of initiatives, including the provision of targeted funds, a collaborative network between QF entities and Qatar-based industry, and a dedicated open space for the community to transform theoretical ideas into applied solutions.

HBKUxHBKU is the first university in the Middle East to offer innovative massive open online courses (MOOCs) with edX, a non profit online learning platform founded by Harvard and MIT. Through this platform, HBKU aims to make quality academic research programs and courses accessible to students in Qatar and the rest of the world. HBKU’s agreement with edX underscores its commitment to pursuing local and international collaborations to promote a truly global educational experience and breaks down academic silos.

CENTERSExecutive Education CenterThe Executive Education Center (EEC) aims to provide customized programs for the professional community of Qatar and the region that are in line with the needs identified through Qatar National Vision 2030.

HBKU PressHBKU Press aims to shape the academic research and literary landscape of the region by contributing to its unique Qatari and Arab voices, ideas and perspectives. The publishing house encourages and supports talented writers to produce academic, fiction and non-fiction works of the highest caliber, and supports the propagation of Qatari and Arab talents in the Gulf region and beyond through the global exchange of information.

Through HBKU Press, the university offers educational books for schools, academic books for universities and researchers, and reference titles that can be accessed online. 

STUDENT AFFAIRSStudent Affairs OfficeHBKU’s Student Affairs aims to support the student body with a range of academic and non-academic services. Students have the opportunity to participate in the University’s many extracurricular activities, including sports teams, debate clubs, international academic conferences, student exchange programs, charity drives, and student council activities, as well as all that are offered by the Student Affairs Office.

Their services cover three functional areas:`` Student Services and Activities Supports student engagement, sport and recreation, housing services and also learning and writing assistance.`` Career and Professional Services A range of programs and events designed to promote a culture of inclusivity and cultural awareness is presented throughout the year. Students are offered assistance to find career opportunities inside the university while alumni continue to be supported to find suitable job placements after they graduate.`` Office of the Vice President These functions support students’ health and wellbeing and also cover a range of international student programs.

CAMPUS LIFEWorld-Class CampusHBKU’s campus offers an endless array of opportunities. Students can enjoy world-class facilities, state-of-the-art labs, modern classrooms and two fully equipped libraries. HBKU’s Housing Complex is the largest collection of LEED-certified student housing facilities in the world; it is a space where students can engage in global leadership, sustainability and diversity.

Education City HBKU’s campus life combines the culture of its partner universities in Education City (EC) – home to eight branch campuses from top international universities. It is also home to various centers that are preserving Qatar’s and the Arab world’s heritage, while promoting lifelong learning and creativity among both the EC community and the general public.

Multaqa (Education City Student Center)This is the ‘majlis’ (living room) of Education City, and serves as the hub for both formal and informal events and activities – from student-led discussion groups and art exhibitions to film screenings and sports tournaments. It also houses a range of shops and food outlets, as well as the offices of the HBKU Student Affairs team. Services include leadership training and employment opportunities.

Housing and Residential LifeEnjoy the convenience of living on campus in HBKU’s LEED-certified student housing. The student-friendly environment offers four separate room types, with dedicated buildings for graduate students and students with families.

ADMISSIONSAdmission Requirements for Graduate ProgramsApplicants seeking admission to the master’s programs at HBKU should have a bachelor’s degree with a strong academic record (minimum 3.0 GPA or equivalent) from a recognized institution.

Applicants to the PhD programs must have a master’s degree with a strong academic record (minimum 3.0 GPA or equivalent) from a recognized institution. Certain programs at HBKU require applicants to have studied in a specific field at university, while others do not.

Applicants are required to submit an IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 79 in order to demonstrate their proficiency in English. Please visit our website — admissions.hbku.edu.qa — for more details on the language proficiency requirement and the process to seek exemption, where this is an option.

Applicants to all PhD programs at HBKU are required to submit the GRE exam at the time of application. Applicants to the Master of Science in Exercise Science are also required to submit the GRE exam. Some programs accept the GMAT in place of the GRE. While the GRE is not required for admission to most master’s programs, it may help strengthen the applicant’s admission materials for those applying to the College of Science and Engineering and the College of Health and Life Sciences.

Academic transcripts:Official electronic copies of transcripts and graduation statements should be submitted as part of the online application. Final transcripts are required for all previous university studies. All transcripts submitted should include an explanation of the grading system.

For those who have not completed their current studies, transcripts must include results from the last completed semester of coursework.

An official translation must accompany transcripts in languages other than English or Arabic. Applicants who are admitted to the program based on copies of or incomplete transcripts will be required to provide original transcripts upon enrollment in order to register for courses.
