The original Holywood Blues and Jazz Festival ran in the town for many years before coming to a halt eight years ago. As a lifelong resident of Holywood & a singer/songwriter I have a strong belief that we can celebrate the true meaning of “community” through the medium of music. It has been a burning desire of mine to resurrect the festival and this year it is finally becoming a reality. I would hope to attract thousands of people to Holywood and to raise the towns profile as a positive force both culturally and economically.

The ‘all new’ Holywood Blues & Jazz Festival is set to be a wonderful event which reflects the delicious richness of our community and offers up a cornucopia of utterly brilliant musical entertainment!

With this in mind I would encourage you to spread the word, invite everybody, switch off the tele, book your babysitters, come out to meet old friends, make new ones, and listen to the heart of Holywood pounding to a brand new beat this weekend.

My sincere gratitude as always goes to my husband Garry (Garrys Barber Shop) who never falters in his support of everything I do.

In my independent and voluntary capacity as festival organiser I have been very fortunately supported by a number of sponsors and local businesses who have helped to make this event happen and for this I thank them all wholeheartedly.

See you all there and let the fun begin!

Mari Jackson

Phoenix Natural Gas is proud to be sponsor of the revived Holywood Blues and Jazz Festival, a wonderful event for the community enabling them to celebrate marvellous music and be thoroughly entertained. Supporting our local community is important to Phoenix and it is great to be involved with an event such as this which highlights the

talent, passion and dedication to be found in Holywood and beyond. We are pleased to be able to welcome the return of the festival and hope you do too.

Alabama 3 Acoustic & Unplugged is a four piece outfit consisting of Larry Love (vocals), Aurora Dawn (vocals), Harpo Strangelove (harmonica), and Rock Freebase (guitar).

With this line up they bring a whole new dimension to the songs made famous by Alabama 3. This isn’t acid house music, this is country/gospel/delta blues, but played with a rhythm you’ve still got to dance to!

The ghost of Mississippi Fred McDowell haunting the fingers of Rock Freebase on guitar, Larry Love’s larynx looser than Howlin’ Wolf... and Harpo Strangelove’s harmonica cooking up a Sonny Terry vibe - welcome to the Delta Blues alive and kicking in 2008” Aurora Dawn brings a powerful injection of soul to their sound - or as it says on the cover of “Revolver Soul”, this is ‘soul music with a gun against your head’.

By performing in this stripped down acoustic way the band’s aim was to show the songs in a format reminiscent of the people that have been their inspiration, chiefly the old Delta Blues players like Fred MacDowell and Bukka White.

Rock Freebase:

“I’ve developed a style of guitar, that combines elements of both MacDowell and White, with a hint of banjo picking, and tried to give it a more modern, urban twist.

Review of Cambridge Folk Festival:

‘While the full band has already conquered the main stage at the world-famous Glastonbury Festival, this year the unplugged band headlined the prestigious Cambridge Folk Festival to an amazing audience response. Gentle folk types were converted to the Alabama 3 unplugged with the same enthusiasm which the Glastonbury crowds have taken to the full band. Rock Freebase has consistently earned his position as a top Mississippi delta blues guitarist and, coupled with Larry’s poisonous vocals, Aurora Dawn’s sweet soul singing and Harpo Strangelove’s harmonica, it is no wonder they have been hailed as the best live band in the UK.’

Performing on Saturday 30th May 2015 (with support) at the marquee at Holywood Rugby Club, High Street, Holywood - Doors 7pm. Tickets priced at £17.50 are available from Garrys Barber Shop, 113 High Street, Holywood 90425262 or online at www.wegottickets.com/event/317229

DOGHOUSE SKA BAND - THE MARQUEE @ HOLYWOOD RUGBY CLUB, FRIDAY 29TH MAY (Doors 7pm)Dust off your Doc Martins in anticipation as Belfast’s premier ska band are the perfect excuse to give them a practice run. The ten-piece band complete with brass section bring classic hits to the stage with buckets of energy and attitude, performing classics from Madness, Bad Manners and of course The Specials – you’ll be reminded just how many great songs belong to the ska genre.

The Belfast band have been going for ten years and they have been getting bigger and bigger crowds across the country, they have supported Bad Manners and have built a reputation of bringing a party atmosphere to every gig. Lead singer Buck Murdock says it isn’t difficult to keep the energy level high, “The thing about ska music is there aren’t many people who don’t like it and even those who say they don’t can always be seen bopping their heads or tapping their feet by the end of the night. It’s a catchy, addictive feel good style of music, but we do like to throw in a little bit of classic punk and reggae with a twist, just to keep everybody on their toes,” he adds. The suited and booted gang are more than a tribute act, they are the real deal when it comes to the ska, and are an act not to be missed!

Ably supported by fantastic outfit The Pogoes (Pogues Tribute Act)

Tickets priced at £10 available from Garrys Barber Shop, 113 High St, Holywood 90425262 or online at www.wegottickets.com/event/317638

CELTIC SOUL - HOLYWOOD YACHT CLUB, KINNEGAR DRIVE, HOLYWOOD, SUNDAY 31ST MAY (Doors 7pm)Van Morrison has got to be the biggest name and most enduring musical icon on the world stage that Belfast has ever produced. This show by Celtic Soul celebrates one of the truly great singer/songwriters of all time.

Receiving critical acclaim from devout Van fans wherever they perform, you’ll hear the big hits like Jackie Wilson Said, Days Like This, and of course Brown Eyed Girl. You’ll also hear Ballerina, Cyprus Avenue, and In the Garden among many others in a packed show.

Things really took off for the band after live ‘unplugged’ performances on Gerry Kelly’s show on BBC Radio Ulster. BBC’s Ralph McLean, a massive Van Morrison fan himself, describes Celtic Soul as ‘a great band’ and ‘a very fine tribute’.

With more years than they care to remember playing in blues, folk, trad and jazz bands these musicians have the ingredients to deliver Van’s music authentically. They are: Clarke Wilson on Vocals and Saxophone, Ray McEvoy (Electric Guitar), Marcus McAuley (Acoustic Guitar), Rik Gay (Drums), Keith Ward (Piano and keyboards), Gerry McClurg (Trumpet) and Mark Crockard (Electric and Double Bass).

Let Celtic Soul take you on a journey through the songbook of our very own musical legend!

Support by the wonderful harmonies of The Alexanders

Mark Braidner specialises in finger style blues and slide playing and at his core he is a blues man through and through. It’s what he’s all about and when he plays you will easily lose yourself in the wonder that is the blues with a little bit of “O Brother Where Art Thou?’ feeling thrown in.

Hooker. Guitarists Hugh Fearon and Peter Millar, drummer Dave Taylor and pianist Paul Evans, first played together in Hooker some 35 years ago. At that point their set moved from mellow acoustic material, featuring plenty of CSNY/Eagles harmonies, to a more electric soft rock. Passing years (and several personnel changes) have seen the material evolve into something more bluesy and soulful. Expect some Santana, some Steely Dan and some Van the Man.

It will be interesting to see if they can maintain this quality, and who knows, because of some catchy melodies they could even cross over to the edge of the mainstream! That would be quite something for a modern day band that I like so much, although if ever an album had something for everyone it is this one.” Mike Morrison at Americana Roots UK.

Scorpion Jack are an acoustic folk rock duo: one voice, one drum, one guitar.
