Hospitals and physicians will need to be more efficient; providing more services, for more people, at lower cost. There will be a focus on preventative care and disease management. Outcomes will be monitored very closely and there will be accountability for readmissions, HACs (Hospital Acquired Conditions) and how long a patient stays in the Hospital (length of stay). Across the State of CA and nationwide, a very tangible connection will be made between the health status of a whole community and the local hospital and healthcare providers. Healthcare reform will bring huge challenges and strong leadership will be required on many levels to meet those challenges. I’m confident, however, that my fellow administrators, physician leaders and the San Benito Healthcare District Board of Directors will meet these challenges head-on. Our own “mandate” and collective goal remains to continue to provide the highest quality healthcare services in the region.”

“Building a Healthier Future,” has been the theme of recent issues of Healthline; illustrated by the expansion of our Hospital campus. The new Support Services Building, the new ER and the new Women’s Center (now under construction) are all projects necessary to better serve the local community and to assure quality health-care is available for future generations.

But, very soon, “Building a Healthier Future” will take on a whole new meaning as new healthcare reform mandates begin to take effect.

From the outside the community can see Hazel Hawkins Hospital is on-the-move, building state-of-the-art facili-ties with the latest technology where only the best providers choose to practice. What you don’t see is how proactive we are in taking the necessary steps to plan for providing healthcare services within a whole new system. This new system will include new mandates involving accountability, efficiency and reimbursement. How will healthcare reform mandates affect the quality of healthcare at Hazel Hawkins?

One thing is certain. Physicians, hospitals and other providers will be required to collaborate like never before! We will be dependent on each other even more to meet all the new requirements.

Ken Underwood, CEO Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital

A message from Ken Underwood, CEO

Director of OB and Med/Surg, Gloria Solano Torres has been at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital for over 40 years. Director of Surgical Services, Danette Freitas Perrien has served HHMH for over 25 years. Director of Radiology, Darlene DeBrito is a relative newcomer having started in 2010. Hollister natives-all, Gloria, Darlene and Danette share a passion for the community as well as a commitment to providing the highest-quality healthcare at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital. All three were born at HHMH. They share a rich history of growing up in a very small rural community, attending local schools, working in the family business, and going on to college and/or healthcare careers elsewhere - only to return to Hazel Hawkins to serve the community they love.

Gloria’s family has been in Hollister since the 1930s. Her father was a ranch manager for Almaden Vineyards and her mom was a floor manager in a local cannery. Danette’s mom worked in a local dress shop while her father worked in farming in San Juan Bautista. Eventually he opened a store called San Juan Orchards. Darlene’s family owned and operated Hollister Equipment Service, Inc.

Torres earned her nursing degree from O’Connor Hospital School of Nursing. Perrien gained an LVN certificate before going on for her RN degree at Gavilan College. “I’m a product of the system,” she said. Auxiliary and Foundation scholarships helped me pay for my training.” When DeBrito (of DeBrito chocolate-fame) decided

that Radiology was the field she wanted to pursue, she

enrolled at Foothill College noted for its Radiology Program.

After graduating, Darlene spent time working at Stanford, UC San Francisco and Children’s Hospital Wayne State University in Detroit before returning to California. “I wanted to get as much on-the-job training as I could,” commented DeBrito. She comes to Hazel Hawkins via Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose where she was Director of Radiology for 6 ½ years.

When asked what was the most significant change in healthcare over the years, all three said: “technology!” New technologies like computerized/digital cameras, scopes and lasers allow for less invasive surgical and diagnostic procedures, as well as more accurate screening, testing and monitoring of patients. Technology is also making it possible to share informa-tion and images on-line with off-site specialists for a second opinion or consultation. “We have what the best facilities have, says Danette. The new physicians who come here are always impressed with our instru-mentation,” she added.

Perrien, Torres and DeBrito have an exciting year ahead of them. All three department managers will be involved in designing, equipping and staffing the new 3-story Women’s Center. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! says Torres. The OB staff and physicians are all very talented. They’re clinically competent and excellent at what they do. Some of them have been here for 30 years. With the new Women’s Center, we will now have a facility that “matches” the superior service we provide.

Dr. Ralph Armstrong officially took office as Chief of Staff on July 1st. The Chief of Staff is the chief officer of the Medical Staff and as such represents the views of the Medical Staff to the District Board of Directors and the Administration of Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital. Following a family tradition, Dr. Armstrong’s father and sister-in-law are both OBs. He established his practice in Hollister in 2005.

“The San Benito County area appealed to my family and me because of its proximity to family in Santa Cruz and Cupertino; and of course the prospect of having input into the design and construction of a new Women’s Center was very exciting!”

Dr. Armstrong hails from Louisiana. He completed an internship and his residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Prior to medical school, he attended the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu, L’Ecole de Cuisine in Paris, France. After he completed his training, he worked as an executive chef at an Atlanta restaurant for three years.

What do you see as the most important issues you will face over the next two years as Chief? “Health-care reform, electronic medical records, and upgrading the acute care facility by renovating Med/Surg and the OR.” In your own words, describe what the new Women’s Center will bring to the community? It will be unique–

the most advanced facility of its kind in the region. The labor and delivery rooms will be designed so all instrumentation and equipment will be hidden behind cabinets until needed. The rooms will be more like a hotel suite or your master bedroom at home.

With the Digital Diagnostic Imaging Center, the in-house OR, and McCullough Resource Center, the new Women’s Center will be a regional hub taking care of women’s healthcare needs at all stages of life.

Dr. Armstrong, with his wife and four children– 15 year old son, Tyler, and 13, 11, and 9 year old daughters, Courtney, Janet, and Audrey, respectively– live in Hollister. His, wife Deborah, is the Assistant Director of Admissions at the Santa Clara University’s MBA

The new Women’s Center will be a comfortable, inviting place where patients and families will want to come.”

Darlene will have input into the design and equipment for the 2nd floor Digital Diagnostic Imaging Center which will include digital mammography and bone density screening. Danette will have a significant role in setting up the Women’s Center OR. No longer will women needing a C-section be moved out of OB. The Women’s Center will have its own in-house OR. It’s a testament to the local community to have such talented and experienced women leading the New Women’s Center team.

“It makes a difference when you are literally serving your friends and neighbors,” says Gloria...it’s very gratifying.”

program. She’s active in the community and has served as a member of the Hospital Foundation Board, and Hospice Founda-tion Trees of Life event committee and the YMCA board. Both Dr. Armstrong and Deborah are active in Boy and Girl Scouts.
