Safety Data Sheets - SDS

Safety data sheets include information about

– properties of the substance (or mixture),

– hazards

– instructions for handling,

– disposal

– transport

– first-aid,

– fire-fighting

– exposure

– control measures.

The requirements for the compilation of the safety

data sheets are specified in Annex II of REACH.

This information can be found in the main body of the safety data sheet

or in the annexed exposure scenarios (where applicable).

A table comparing MSDS/SDS content/format is provided in Appendix A of the guidance document

The major differences between MSDS and SDS is that

SDS (GHS) are globally used in EU

Basic concepts for safe use of chemicals

23

Adequate information and understanding about every chemical in the workplace Clearly established policy on the safe use of chemicals in the workplace, providing the framework for both organizational and operational control measures; Management of hazards involving all (it starts before the receipt of the chemical and continues without interruption, ending when the chemical is modified (reacts) and/or excess is re-used, neutralized or destroyed.

Labels are essential for general information on hazards

Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals

What is

"Purple Book"

• Define health, physical and environmental hazards of

chemicals;

• Create classification processes that use available data on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria; and

• Communication of hazard information, and protection measures on

LABELS and SAFETY DATA SHEETS (SDS)

The GHS itself is not a regulation or a standard, it is a document that establishes agreed hazard classification and communication provisions with explanatory information on how to apply the system.
