Hazard and Risk Assessment
A hazard is something that can cause harm if not controlled.
The outcome is the harm that can result from an uncontrolled hazard
A risk is a combination of the probability that a particular outcome with occur and the severity of the harm involved.
Hazard Assessment
• A process in which individual hazards of the workplace are identified, assessed and controlled/eliminated
• Dynamic control of prevention • May not be able to eliminate all risks, but are
able to eliminate them • Managers calculate and manage the risks
Risk Assessment• Carried out prior to making an intervention to the
hazard • Risks need to be managed to a level which is as low as
reasonably practical • Risks assessment identifies the hazards, identifies all
affect by the hazard and how, evaluates the risk and identifies and prioritises appropriate control measures
• Evaluation of the risk is based on the likelihood of the harming being realised and the severity of the consequences (low, medium and high)
• Assessment should be recorded and reviewed periodically.
Hazard and Risk Assessment
Hazard- standing in an unsafe matter on the ladder
Outcome- a fall occasioning minor or serious harm
Risk- high
Prevention- employees taught correct procedure for using a ladder, using a mirror faced ladder instead
