Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to announce that Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University/TJUH Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior is now offering a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship program in Addiction Psychiatry. Philadelphia is facing the worst urban opioid crisis in the country. Many of the city’s residents require treatment for concurrent substance-related and psychiatric disorders. Unfortunately, despite increasing demand for addiction services, there is a shortage of specialists in many clinical settings. It is the goal of our Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program to train the next generation of addiction specialists to meet the needs of a tremendously underserved population. Fellows will become proficient in providing compassionate, appropriate, and effective care to patients and their families in a wide variety of clinical settings. At the successful completion of the program, fellows will be eligible to apply for board certification in Addiction Psychiatry from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). MD/DO applicants must have successfully completed or be in the final year of a four-year ACGME-accredited residency program in General Psychiatry and must be eligible for board certification by the ABPN before starting their Addiction Psychiatry fellowship training. Division of Addictions

Department of Psychiatry Dear Colleagues: The Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences now offers a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship training program in addiction psychiatry. Addiction psychiatry is concerned with the prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery of persons with the disease of addiction, of those with substance-related health conditions, and of persons who show unhealthy use of substances including nicotine, alcohol, prescription medications, and other licit and illicit drugs. Physicians in this subspecialty also work with family members whose health and functioning are affected by a loved one’s substance use or addiction. Addiction psychiatry fellowships are multispecialty training programs that focus on the provision of care for persons with unhealthy substance use, substance use disorders (SUDs), and other addictive disorders. Addiction psychiatrists work in diverse settings, including clinical medicine, public health, education, and research. They treat patients across the lifespan who have different degrees of disease severity, from those at risk, to those with advanced and complicated disease, to those in recovery. An addiction psychiatry fellowship provides fellows with experience in the prevention, clinical evaluation, treatment, and long-term monitoring of SUDs. The educational program emphasizes the management of medical, psychiatric, and social sequelae in the comprehensive care of these patients and is informed by a wide range of evidence-based interventions.

I. Purpose: The purpose of the VUMC addiction psychiatry fellowship program is to provide psychiatrists with a structured educational experience that will enable them to care for patients with SUDs, and for family members of persons with SUDs.

II. Prerequisites: Psychiatrists who wish to pursue fellowship training in addiction psychiatry must have successfully completed all the training requirements of a four-year ACGME-accredited residency program in general psychiatry and are eligible for board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
