Kindergarten

Language ArtsPhonological Awareness Skills: rhyming, alliteration, syllable segmenting, sentence segmenting, blending (/c/ /a/ /t/ = cat ) and segmenting phonemes (cat = /c/ /a/ /t/)Phonics: Letters and letter soundsPre-Reading Skills: songs, poems, big books, print rich environment, recognizing high frequency words and dramatization Reading: Reader’s Workshop, read alouds, shared reading, comprehension strategies and focusing on concepts of printGuided Reading: The students read a teacher selected text in small group; the teacher provides explicit teaching and support for reading increasingly challenging texts with accuracy, comprehension, and fluency. Conferring: Reading conferences occur while kids are engaged in independent reading. Students will set an individual goal that drives teaching.Strategy Groups: small groups of students are supported on a specific skill or strategy. These groups do not have to be on the same level.

Math Whole Group Mini-Lessons Guided Math small groups Math Rotations/Stations

Concepts taught: numeracy 0-20, number combinations, counting, 2D and 3D shapes, graphing, money, addition, subtraction, and measurement.

We also focus on creative and critical thinking, problem solving, and real world application. Children will use manipulative, draw, and then use abstract representations to solve math problems.

Science & Social Studies Social Studies units include topics from basic

map skills to important historical figures and events.

Science concepts are “hands on” activities designed to encourage discovery learning.

Science Lab – we will visit the Science Lab to perform observations and experiments.

Grades are given based on observationof understanding the concepts.

Report Cards

Report cards will be sent home every nine weeks. We have 4 nine week grading periods.

Children are assessed on Language Arts, Reading, Handwriting, Writing and Math skills.

Students will be assessed throughout the school year using both district assessments and teacher observation.

Students will be given a grade of P (proficient),

D (Developing) or E (Emerging).

Writes his/her first name with capital and lowercase letters on baseline without assistance

Identifies and describes 2-D Shapes (Circle, Triangle, Square and Rectangle)

Sorts and describes a group of objects

Homework

Homework will be changing this year to match our new curriculum. The week’s assignments will be found on our weekly newsletter.

The homework is designed to reinforce/strengthen skills that are taught in our classrooms.

Take home readers will be sent home during the week.

A few more reminders… Please make sure your child gets to school on time. Students can come in the

door and down to the classroom at 7:40 so that they are unpacked and ready to start class after announcements are complete.

Please send back your child’s library book each week on our class’s library day.

We will be using Seesaw this year. It is a great way to be connected to your child’s day.

Emails: If you do not receive any emails from your child’s teacher, please email the teacher to let her know. Please regularly check your email for our weekly newsletter. Please follow us on Twitter and Facebook.

We will have Student of the Week. Your child will be selected at random to be a student of the week. More information will be sent in a few weeks.

Label your child’s name on EVERYTHING (backpack, lunchbox, coats, snacks, water bottles).

Please make sure you send a daily snack with your child.

Birthday treats must be store bought with ingredients listed.

Birthday invitations cannot be passed out at school.
