Isle of Axholme Where You Live Your Local History
Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No.10
by Anthony Catherall
Morris Butler one of the original members had moved on to a Headship elsewhere and was missed by
his peers. However the show must go on and the Thriller “Night Must Fall” by Emlyn Williams was chosen for the tenth production. It was first presented at the Duchess Theatre,
London, on 31st May, 1935. In the film version of the same name in 1937 it was awarded Best Picture of the Year by the
National Board of Review. Robert Montgomery a young actor playing Danny was nominated for Best Actor and Dame May Whitty, also nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the role
as Mrs Branson.
The plot was, a handsome young man charms his way into the household of a wealthy invalid, but her niece is suspicious of his motives.
Later in 1964 the film was remade with the same title, starring Albert Finney, albeit with less success. In the Epworth three act production in March 1958, Jack Johnson had the lead role
as Danny, whilst Mary Housham played Mrs Branson. G. Rupert Newborn another newcomer played the Lord Chief Justice, Margaret Archer (Olivia Grayne), Bob Robinson (Hubert Laurie)
Ella Dempster (Nurse Libby), Audrey Till (Mrs Terence) Joyce Battye (Dora Parkoe) and Gordon Fletcher, as Inspector Belsize.
There were one or two new acknowledgements in the programme (still at 3d). Mrs J. Laird,
of Market Place was now selling the Ice Cream and Sweets, whilst grateful thanks was extended to Mrs, W. Harrison, Epworth, for the loan of her wheeled Chair during all
rehearsals and the Show. The prompter was Miss Pat Rimington and Marjorie Trimingham took the task of being Property Mistress. Harry T. Shipley took on the new position of
Manager (front of Curtain).

HERITAGE SOCIETY
MEMBERS MEETING 14th. MARCH
2013 At the March meeting of the Haxey & Westwoodside
Heritage Society local photographer George Fiddler
presented a photographic review of the Parish Jubilee
Celebrations, from Jubilee parties, patriotic songs, local
open gardens visits and a Spitfire fly-past viewed from the
advantage point of the church tower George entertained
his audience and climaxed his presentation with scenes
from the Haxey beacon lighting.
Giving the ‘vote of thanks’ society member Mr. Aubrey
Lindley thanked George for a very entertaining evening and noted that this had evoked many happy
memories of the celebrations.
Earlier, Chairman Mrs. Jackie Starr, reminded members of the Society’s Easter Themed Tea to be held in
the Westwoodside Village Hall on Saturday 23rd. March.
Mr. Stuart Hopkins received the free draw prize of £5 and the evening ended with refreshments served.
The next meeting of the society will be on April 11th. when Alan Rowsell will speak on ‘The Ridgeway’
Britain’s Oldest Road.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION – St Martin’s
and West Butterwick Church of England
Primary Schools – School News
The Juniors in Class 2 at West Butterwick were buzzing with journalistic
talent on Tuesday 12th March following a visit from Sean Ringwood,
Scunthorpe Telegraph Journalist. Pupils in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 were given
a really interesting insight in to the life and skills of a journalist by Sean.
Sean regaled them with real life journalistic reports gathered over a
period of years that featured such eye-catching titles as ‘Pineapple
Chunks Saved My Life!’ Sean spoke about his journalistic training and
gave a demonstration of ‘short hand’. The Juniors at West Butterwick
are now writing their own news stories that will be featured in the
Scunthorpe Telegraph in Early April, so please keep an eye out for these!
West Butterwick Infants have tied in their fondness for cakes with a
worthwhile study of Fair Trade ethics as part of their RE/PSHE
studies. The children held a Fair Trade cake sale on Tuesday
19th March. In preparation for this, they took orders from
customers across the school community which then led them
to ‘doing the maths’ in order to calculate how much Fair
Trade ingredients they would need to buy for the delicious
cake recipes they had chosen. Cakes have featured strongly in
the month of March here at West Butterwick as the School
Council held a sale on Thursday 14th March as a final
fundraising event for a Playground Markings Project they have
been involved in this academic year. The School Council was
very appreciative of the large quantity of cake donations and
would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all who supported this
event. Cakes aside, there were some important visitors in
our school recently – three Parish Councillors (Cllrs Coggon, Lewis and Shadlock) came in to discuss shared
local priorities with our School Councillors. Issues such as cars speeding through the village and the ongoing
problem with dog fouling emerged as priorities for the school and the Parish Council to work on together.
St Martin’s School Council also met recently with a member of the Parish Council for Owston Ferry – Cllr
Jan Williams. For the last two academic years, St Martin’s School Council has worked purposefully with the
Parish Council on ‘Litter Busting’ and ‘Dog Fouling’. The ongoing problem of dog fouling has led this to be a
priority for this year also. Apart from the legal consequences of dog fouling, there are health implications.
Symptoms vary but, in severe cases, partial or total loss of sight may occur. Getting dog mess into wounds
may also cause infections. Another danger is people being injured by slipping on dog mess. It is a hazard, all in
all. We will bring you further news of our campaign and its impact on ‘scooping the poop’ as it progresses!
A chance to ‘de-stress’ was provided for the ladies of St Martin’s School Community a few weeks ago when
the PTA held a ‘Ladies Night’. There were beauty treatments on offer, refreshments and a variety of stalls. It
was very enjoyable and a successful fundraiser for the school. Thanks to all who organised and contributed
to the success of the evening. With only a couple of weeks to go until the end of this rather short Spring
Term, we are learning at a fast pace and enjoying some awe-inspiring projects such as ‘Adopt a Dolphin’ and
writing to Green Peace (and receiving a reply!) in the Foundation Stage, creating a Rainforest Tree in the
classroom (Key Stage 1) and visiting The Deep in Hull (all of Key Stage 2 Juniors) to learn about habitats and
how a number of these are endangered requiring natural conservation to be a priority. On a less serious
note, I am sure that most schools participated in the ‘wear something funny for money’ linked to Comic
Relief on Friday 15th March. St Martin’s staff and pupils were indeed a sight to behold!
This term will end with our traditional Easter Services in the final week. We hope that everyone has an
enjoyable Easter!

RED NOSES IN WROOT
Comic Relief weekend in Wroot got off to a good
start on Friday night with fun and games in the
village hall. Members of Wroot Amateur Players
provided entertainment performing several
sketches; there were organised games, a red nose
quiz and the disco man! The bar and kitchen were
manned by willing volunteers and a good night was
had by all concerned.
With a few sore heads, Saturday dawned all too
early for some, and with the mornings activities
imminent it was disappointing to see the rain. Six
children had organised a car wash at the Village Hall
and inside there was a cake competition taking
place. The weather however did not detract from
the task in hand, and in 2 hours in the cold and
unforgiving weather, Alicia and Sam Jones, Hannah
and Max Powell, Libby and Tom Goodwin between
them cleaned 24 cars and raised £135.00 for comic
relief, and eventually the sun did peep out
momentarily but not before the children had
obtained genuine red noses!
Inside the Cakes were entered into three classes
and Beryl Tonkinson from the Cross Keys Pub was
asked to judge. Ellie Oates won the adult "Best
Tasting Cake" category. Libby Goodwin took first
prize in the "Best Decorated Bun" class for children
and Julie Noble won the adult "Best Decorated
Cake" class. The cakes were then donated for sale
and raised £58.00
The ladies in the kitchen spent the morning cooking
and selling bacon and sausage sandwiches, cups of
tea and coffee plus a variety of home baked
confectionary and the village hall was buzzing with
enthusiasm.
In total for the Saturday event £270.25 was raised
for comic relief, the final figure for the Friday event
has still to be worked out.
A big thank you to those who worked so hard
putting the events on and to those who attended
and contributed, well done!
