The second half features two contrasting masterpieces by Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky. The hypnotic rhythms of Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements are an experimental masterstroke, while the much more familiar lush orchestration and rich harmonic textures of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet will be a thrilling end to the concert.

Conductor Nick DaviesViolin Duncan Riddell

Come and celebrate St George’s Day with music by four of England’s finest composers. Opening with the triumphant sound of Walton’s celebratory Crown Imperial march, this quintessentially English sound is echoed throughout Coates’ London Suite. From the bustling marketplace at Covent Garden to a quiet evening at Westminster, finishing with the all-time favourite Knightsbridge March. In contrast, the concert features two works by Vaughan Williams, evoking images of pastoral England, through the soaring sound of the solo violin in his The Lark Ascending and in the full string orchestra in his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. Elgar’s much admired Enigma variations brings the celebrations to a spectacular close.
