7January 2018

Welcome to 2018 and I trust you all had a good Christmas and New Year. January has been quiet for the Club with some of us being away and no meetings, but in behind the scenes there has been some busy beavers pushing ahead with our annual Art Deco. The wheels never stop turning (no pun intended) as every effort is made to ensure we are as organised as possible to have an enjoyable festival. Remember, it is not too late to offer your services to those putting together each of the day’s activities.

As we move into the New Year, I hope you have had the chance to view the Clubs rejuvenated WEB site. (www.hbvcc.org.nz)This went live just on Christmas and feedback so far has been positive and as we progress there will be more and more information available. So I encourage you to jump on and have a look. The MAG will available for reading there (in colour) and upcoming events etc will all be added for your benefit.

Our first Club Meeting of the year will be Wednesday 7th Feb, one week earlier than usual due to Art Deco so mark it in your calendars. It is mentioned later in the MAG and also on the WEB site.

As we approach Art Deco Festival, we look forward to members support as we not only show case the Region but also our club. This is our major fund raising project for the year, and success helps us maintain fees and maintain your clubrooms. As an extra this year there is a book that has been produced by Steve Trott featuring the thirty cars which is in limited print. If you would like a copy I suggest you get in early and email Steve to obtain this special booklet priced at $25.00 each.

So that’s it from me, I hope you all enjoy the coming year and have some excellent motoring memories.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT//By Ian Elmsly

7January 2018

Right here we go!!! A new year and we have lots of interesting events organised

First thing to remember is that our first Club Night for the year is on Wednesday 7th of Feb

Then next is the Art Deco Event which is shaping up really well. The SIMPLY THE BEST group of 30 cars has been finalised and includes a mixture of great cars, including celebrity cars, rare cars, a steam car, an electric car and NZ’s oldest mobile/registered car. These will be at the Friday, Saturday and Sunday events at the clubrooms.

This year we have a great new trophy to award to the car that receives the most popular choice votes by the other entrants. Voting will take place at the HBVCC club rooms on Saturday morning during morning tea. The trophy has been kindly donated by the Southward Family and will be able to be retained by the entrant whose vehicle receives the most votes.

There has been a good response to the request for veteran cars and it looks like around 20 of them attending this year. We are pleased that Jacqui Madelin has entered and will be attending the whole event, with a view to writing articles for her regular columns in the Driven section of the NZ Herald. This supplement is distributed nationwide with local newspapers as well. She is also providing coverage to NZ Classic Car. Gordon Campbell will also be attending to provide coverage for Classic Driver magazine.

COMING EVENTS:

Upcoming events are:

• 7th February Mid-week run.

• 7th February Club Night (note this is a week early, to avoid a clash with Art Deco)

• 16th>18th February. Art Deco weekend-The 30th Anniversary of Art Deco.

• 23rd February-Kitchen Evening At the Clubrooms

• 7th March Mid-week run

• 10th March – 50 year membership awards lunch

• 14th March – Club Night

• 18th March- Club run

Note that on Saturday the 10th of March, we will be holding a luncheon to celebrate the presentation of 50 year membership awards by our VCC President, Diane Quarrie to Wayne Evans, Colin Campbell and Doug Bixley. (They are actually due last year, but good things take time to organise)

Refer to the ad in this mag for additional information, but we will need to know in advance, the numbers who wish to attend for catering purposes.

By the time you receive this MAG, we will have already started our program for the year with a hiss and a roar, or rather with a run down to central Hawke’s Bay where we were originally meant to go to the Tikokino for lunch, only to be told that they were short staffed and the chef was on crutches, therefore they couldn’t cope with a group our size.

All I can say is I hope that is a portend of what it’s going to be like when I try to organise other events this year

CHRISTMAS PICNIC RUN//

A Wonderful sunny Hawke’s Bay day saw twenty three cars, vintage, post vintage and modern, meet at the HBVCC clubrooms for an 11am start of the 2017 Christmas Picnic run. We were sent off with written instructions to follow, and a few blank questions to complete.

The route took us around Pakowhai to Farndon Road, State Highway 2 to Napier across the Napier Hill and on to Bayview. Over the Bayview hill to State Highway 5 then on to State Highway 2 up and down to Kaiwaka Road and on to Darkys Spur Road, we did have an option of taking the tar seal but most went via the metal down Darky’s Spur. The views were amazing and the countryside was green compared to the lower farmland.

Holt’s Forest was the destination, we were permitted to drive in through the locked gate and park along the track by the lake under the trees for our picnic lunch, we formed a large circle with our chairs and picnic tables.

We chatted, watching the dragonflies on the lake while we waited for the last few cars to arrive and join us, creating yet a bigger circle.

A few cars had made turns not on the list, others had sign collection duty to complete but all made it safely in time for lunch.

Lunch was served, Subway rolls and a yummy large Subway biscuit.

Strawberries and a tub of ice cream then a huge liquorice-all-sorts sweet, yummy!

There was plenty of food and seconds available for the extra hungry.

We were told of the history of the forest fable and fact. There were trees labelled with their name and date planted if members wished to take a walk following the tracks in the Forest.

The Holt Forest was created by Mr and Mrs Holt who bought a piece of land in 1933 for the purpose of creating a 'Forest of Fine Trees'. They planted over 500 different species of indigenous and introduced trees, shrubs, ferns and flowering plants. The forest was proclaimed a wildlife sanctuary in 1962 and was gifted to the people of New Zealand and what an absolute stunning gift it is!

The HBVCC has enjoyed several runs to the Holt Forrest over the years but for some of these members it was their first visit.

Some drivers chose to return via Darkys Spur while others drive through Waikoau to Tutira and down State Highway 2 home - the day was wonderful for touring in our ‘Open’ vehicle & other classic vehicles - sun shining, a breeze not a cloud in the sky.

Thank you to the organisers, Steve & Pam Donovan, Esther & Graham Smith, and all the other HBVCC members who made this Christmas Picnic Run such a success.

19January 2018

Hi Folks,Woo Hoo it’s time to Deco up! Hugely looking forward to seeing you all for a jolly good time at the festivities. Unfortunately we are so busy with Hooters that with dad driving the Bugatti I thought I would be out and about in the Lagonda but alas duty calls. So we have drafted in the next best thing and Monte AKA ‘Martin Males’ David’s navigator for many years and also proud Hupmobile Racer owner, will be stepping in, coming all the way over from the UK. There is not many people that David would let drive the ‘Lag’ but Monte is part of the family so please do show him the Napier welcome. Some of you many even remember him from a few years ago when he came over and helped us with donation rides for the weekend in his usual Monte style. Well it’s definitely been a mixed bag of weather we’ve been having this month.

Tops down, tops up, change to hard tops, sun comes out and back to open tops. The rain pours and we swap to hard tops and the customer requests an open top! Certainly adds to an eventful day. This month we all seemed to have had the ‘rellies’ here along with the usual cruise ships, tours and events, so it’s been a huge month for the team. Those cruise ships are certainly coming in thick and fast from now on, a bat of the eyelids and we’ll be at Deco! Soooooo……..David has also been at it again: ‘Compulsive Vintage Car Syndrome’ So I leave you with the newest addition to the fleet. A 1939 V12 Lagonda Sports Sedan which was the 1939 Berlin Motor Show Car. HAVE I MENTIONED WE ARE DESPERATELY SEEKING DRIVERS!Have an amazing Art Deco Weekend :-) Be Seeing you.
