A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALFrom the Desk of Mrs. Lane

As we move further ahead into second semester, I continue to be impressed with our students academically and in their extra-cur-ricular efforts. I also appreciate your involvement and support of your child, as I know this is critical to the continued success of our students. We have had two deaths in our Hawk community recently that reinforced to our staff and myself just how import-ant parental support and communication is for our Hawk Family. Our students need support surrounding them on all sides and I appreciate you all and your partnership with Olathe East.

Due to appropriate supervision and Spring just around the corner, we are continuing to ask that all students are off campus by 3:15 unless they are under direct supervision by an adult. Students who are staying after to work with a teacher, or in a supervised activity, or are at an East related athletic practice are clearly allowed to be on campus. We have several unsu-pervised students who are still here well after 3:30. Please help ensure that your child is off campus no later than 3:15, as this becomes a safety concern for your child and the others who are permitted to be here.

There are many events coming up this month that I would like to draw your attention to:

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Wednesday, February 7th from 4:30 - 8:30 pm and Thursday, February 8th from 11:00am to 8:00pm with a dinner break from 4:00 - 4:45pm. Along with hearing about your child’s academic progress, this is a great time to ask questions regarding enrollment for next year. We look forward to seeing you next week.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, and with it landing on a school day, I wanted to reinforce our policy related to special deliveries. With approximately 2,000 students in attendance we discourage deliveries to the school building. If deliveries are made, items will be held in the office. Names of students receiving items will be posted in the office window throughout the day and students can quickly pick up their delivery during their passing period or at the end of the day. We will not be sending individual passes to students notifying them of their delivery, nor will we be interrupting class to make a special Valentine delivery during the school day.

Enrollment is just around the corner and I would like to invite all parents to attend our enrollment meeting February 5th at 6:00pm in the auditorium. Department representatives will be available to answer any particular questions regarding their course after the formal presentation. Please make it a priority to review your student’s selections prior to February 22nd. Students will have to submit the hard copy of their enrollment sheet to staff on February 23rd. If you have any ques-tions regarding enrollment, please contact your child’s counselor or go to Olathe East’s website and click on counseling. It is very important students make wise selections as we plan course offerings around what our students select. If changes are made after enrollment, we cannot guar-antee the course will be opened when the student asks for the change.

In conclusion, I would like to heighten parent awareness regarding “Vaping,” inhaling water vapor to obtain a substance, most often nicotine. I would encourage every parent to speak to their student regarding the health risks of vaping, as some of our students believe this is a “healthy” alternative to smoking cigarettes. This is not true. You may also hear students refer to a “juul” or a “juul pod” which is a highly concentrated nicotine vaporizer and can commonly be mistaken for a USB flash drive. This is a part of the “vape pen” and juuls are sold in a variety flavors, often masking the nicotine smell or taste. It is illegal to sell these products to students under the age of 18 in some areas and even 21 in others. Please reach out if you have any questions we can help answer regarding this topic.

LOOKING AHEADSpring Sports teams will start their tryouts/practices on Monday, February 26th. Please access the Olathe East website and click on the “Athletics” tab, “Spring Sports” tab, and then the sport of choice for specific information regarding tryouts. Any student interested in participating in Baseball, Boys Golf, Girls Soccer, Softball, Girls Swimming & Diving, Boys Tennis, or Boys and Girls Track & Field must have a parent-signed and student-signed Physical Form (dated after May 01, 2017) and a parent-signed and student-signed Concussion Form on file in the Athletic Office prior to participation – please do not wait until the last minute to get these forms turned-in! Both forms may be picked-up in the Main Office or on the Olathe East website. Be sure to print all four pages of the Physical Form and sign the last page. Please note that forms obtained at the Doctor’s Office typically only include the second page – students must turn-in all four pages to be eligible to participate in tryouts/practice.

KAY CLUB ATTENDS 2017 KAY REGIONAL CONFERENCE

The KAY Club officers attended the Area 1 KAY Regional Conference on October 30, 2017 at Turner Recreational Center in Turner Kansas. The Club received the Red Award, recognizing their student leadership and service to their school, community, nation and world for the 2016-2017 school year.

The Kansas Association for Youth (KAY) is a character-building, leadership training program directed by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. This nationally acclaimed organization provides students an opportunity to learn to assume their citizenship responsibilities and to enrich their personalities through well-organized programs. These programs emphasize four areas of service: school, community, nation and world.

The theme for the 2017 Regional Conference was “Set Sail….LEAD-YER-SHIP”! This conference affords opportunities for student leaders and sponsors from neighboring clubs to share successes and challenge, as well as exchange ideas. Sessions in leadership training and organizational skills are also offered.

KAY CLUB SERVICE PROJECTS FOCUS ON HOLIDAY SPIRITTuesday, December 5, KAY club went to the Nottingham Rehabilitation Center to help decorate for the holidays. Due to KAY club’s contribution, the nurses and employees were able to focus on helping the elderly, rather than decorating. Quite a few members of the club participated and enjoyed spending time with each other while helping decorate. This is just one of the many service projects KAY club has done this year. Just last month, members of the club volunteered at a restaurant-style food pantry. KAY club loves to help others and make a difference in many lives!

Congratulations to the eight choir members that will be representing Olathe East H.S. in the 2018 Kansas Music Educators Association All-State Honor Choir at the State Conference in Wichita, February 22 – 24. These singers were selected through a rigorous blind audition where musicians sing cuts from three pieces of music, and in the N.E. Kansas auditions, students also do a sight singing exercise as part of the audition process. Five of the OE All-Staters earned perfect sight singing scores this year.

The All-State Honor Choir is comprised of 256 of the top singers from across the state. The eight Olathe East singers make up ten percent of the eighty singers from the fifty five high schools in N.E Kansas region.

Jacob Thomas is a three-year All-State Choir Member this year. It is very difficult to make the choir for even one year, so accomplishing it for three consecutive years is outstanding!

FRESHMEN STUDENTS NAMED TO KMEA HONOR CHOIR

The OEHS Madrigal Singers have been selected to perform at the annual Kansas Music Educators’ Association (KMEA) In-Service Workshop in Wichita on Friday, February 23 at 4:00 p.m. in the Mary Jane Teall Theatre in Century II. Out of all the high school choirs in Kansas, only seven ensembles were selected to perform at this year’s conference. Last May the Madrigal Singers submitted an audio recording of a performance of three songs that were judged in a blind audition during the summer. Mrs. Scheibler was notified shortly before school started in August that the Madrigal Singers were selected to perform.

The Madrigal Singers will present a program at this year’s conference, showcasing a wide variety of

choral literature. The six pieces that they will be performing range from a Renaissance madrigal to Chopin to contemporary vocal jazz. The Madrigal Singers will be presenting their KMEA program at a home concert along with the Olathe East Chamber Orchestra, who was also selected to perform at the KMEA ISW, prior to their Wichita performances. This special, combined choir and orchestra Pre-KMEA Concert will be held on Tuesday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the OEHS Auditorium.

Counselingcorner2018-2019 Enrollment

Please mark your calendars for our annual Parent Information Meeting regarding Enrollment for next year! All parents of Current Grade 8, 9, 10, and 11 students are encouraged to participate! Monday - February 5, 2018Olathe East High School Auditorium at 6:00 pm

On-Line Enrollment for 2018-2019 is due Friday, February 23. Please attend the parent meeting to learn more about the process! Students are welcome.

We hope to provide answers to the most frequently asked questions about enrollment, course opportunities, graduation requirements, college preparatory recommended curriculum and other topics of interest to you and your students. Department Representatives and OATC will answer questions after the 6:00 pm presentation.

Olathe East High School counselors will provide information for our students regarding enrollment opportunities and the on-line enrollment process. A power point presentation will be posted on the website. The Enrollment Timeline includes specific dates for our future and current students. To view the “Enrollment Timeline”, please refer to our website http://teachers.olatheschools.com/oecounseling/enrollment-information/ .

Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences (February 7 & 8) are a great time to consult with teachers and school counselors regarding enrollment questions.

Counselors will meet with current 8th graders at CT, FT, and PT to finalize their enrollment. Students who currently attend Olathe East will need to select their classes online no later than Friday, February 23, 2018. Counselors will not be meeting with students through classes but will be available in the Commons during Hawk Hour Mon-Wed, Feb 12-14 and all day Friday, February 23 in the Writing Lab if students need assistance completing their online enrollment.

Guidelines for Choosing Courses for 2018-2019

The following questions are often heard as we begin enrollment for the coming school year!

• What does “online enrollment” mean for my student?• How do I know what my student needs to graduate and prepare for college?• How do I help my student choose classes?

Several important topics will be discussed at the Parent Enrollment Information Meeting on February 5th. Counselors and advisory teachers have provided enrollment information to students including “Program Planning Guides”, “Enrollment Instructions” and “Enrollment Worksheets”. Details are available online.

Students are required to log on to their Student VUE accounts to access online enrollment. Parents may see their student’s choices via their Parent VUE account.

The “Program Planning Guide” is a valuable resource for students and parents. Helpful information includes Graduation Requirements, Kansas Regents Admission Requirements, Weighted Grades, Credit Options (including Advanced Placement, College Now, and Quick Step opportunities), NAIA and NCAA Eligibility Requirements, College Admissions and Financial Aid, and 21st CENTURY ACADEMIES.

As students make choices, please consider the following:• Graduation requirements• Recommended college preparatory curriculum when 4 year and/or 2 year college is the goal• Post-secondary goals• Courses that develop skills and explore areas of interest• Teacher recommendations for most appropriate courses• Completion of online enrollment by due dates

Please refer to the Program Planning Guide and other online resources for details and answers to many questions. Check with your student’s teachers and school counselor during Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences with additional questions. Students benefit most when making informed decisions about their course requests for the next school year! Students must request the courses they are willing to keep in their schedule. Schedule changes will be limited due to course availability and class sizes!

Attention Senior Parents and Seniors

Every year the counseling department collects scholarship information in order to recognize students at the Academic Signing and the Awards Ceremony for Seniors. Last year, 216 seniors were offered scholarships, awards and/or special recognitions totaling over 13 million dollars and accepted 1.9 million for their first year of education with a renewable amount of 6.7 million dollars.

The Academic Signing, in late April, recognizes students that have been offered and accepted College/University academic scholarships or scholarships from Technical/Vocational schools. Students can only be recognized is they submit their scholarship information in a timely manner. The deadline to submit scholarship information is April 20th.

In early May, Olathe East has an awards ceremony to celebrate senior successes. At that time, many community leaders attend to present their scholarships, personally, to the recipients. All accepted scholarships are read off for each individual as well as various other awards. Again all scholarship information needs to be submitted by April 20th.
